Chapter 8: Hidden In Plain Sight

"And here's our tower." Sam said as we pull up to the tower. "Do you think the treasure is in this tower?" I asked him. "I hope so. Or at least another clue on where to find it." He said as we get out of our jeep and head towards the tower. "Knowing our luck, Nate will be the lucky one and be in the right tower." I said and Sam laughs. "Yeah...that sounds about right." He said.

We make our way through some of the crowds and make our way inside the tower. "So...why did Nathan seemed so nervous about you coming with me?" Sam asked as we get inside of the large structure and start to look for clues. "I think it's cause I was drugged and captured by Marlowe a few years back. Then she sent me off to some pirates while her and her partner captured Sully and Nate and told them that I was dead." I replied. "Holy shit." Sam muttered in shock.

"Yeah...so for a few days that's what he believed. Until I came in and saved them." I replied as we start to make our way to the top of the tower. "I should've been there for you guys." Sam said, sadly, and I look over at him and give him a sympathetic smile. "Hey, you're here now! That's what matters." I said as I placed my right hand on his shoulder. He looks over at me and nods as we continue up on the tower and look around.

"Well, looks like nothing here." I said after look around for a few minutes. "Ah, damn it." Sam mutters in anger. "I'll bet you ten bucks Nate and Sully are in the right tower." I said. "Okay, it's a bet!" Sam said as he pulls out his phone and looks down at it. "Huh." He mutters. "What?" I asked. "Got a voicemail from Sullivan." He said and he brings up the voicemail and puts it on speaker. "You have one unheard message." The automated voice said.

"Hey, guys. Looks like we're at the right tower. Call us." Sully said and I smiled. "Starting to sound like you owe me ten bucks." I said. "Yeah, yeah...whatever." he said and I laugh as he dials Sully's number. "Sam! Finally, you and (y/n) okay?" Sully asked. "Just searched our tower. We got nothing." Sam replied. "Yeah, well, we're definitely in the right place. Make your way over here." Sully said and Sam's jaw droppped. "Are you serious?" He asked and I exclaimed  "Ha! Now you definitely owe me ten bucks!"

"Yeah, yeah...okay." Sam said. "What?" Sully asked. "Oh, (y/n) and I had a bet to see if you and Nate were in the right tower. She won." Sam said as I smiled. "Smart girl." Sully laughed. "Anyway, we're on our way." Sam said and he hangs up. "Well, no time to waste." I said and we start to head back down the long staircase.

"You know...speaking of Nathan being protective of you, I remember when you two were young....Nathan would always be by your side. No matter where you went, he was right there next to you." Sam said and I smiled. "I remember. Everyone always said we were inseparable." I said and Sam chuckles. "I remember when you feel off the swing and you cried, Nathan ran over to you and hugged you before I could come up and do anything. I also remember the day we were taking to that orphanage and they took you to that all girl's orphanage." He said and I frowned.

I remember that day too. The nuns and priest did their best to try to put me in the car but I kept fighting them cause I didn't want to be separated from my brothers. Nate especially kept fighting to at least get to me but he couldn't.

"He was in a terrible mood after that day. For a few days, he wouldn't do anything, wouldn't eat, wouldn't talk...nothing. It took me awhile but I was able to help him out and told him that one day I would figure out how to get all three of us back together." Sam said and I look up at him. "I know how he felt. I was the same way once I got to the orphanage." I said and Sam looks at me, a hint of sadness in his eyes.

Suddenly, my phone and Sam's phone dings as we make it down to the bottom of the tower. I pulled out my phone and saw it was a text from Sully. I clicked on the text app and saw that he sent various pictures of a mechanism with like different sigils. "You get a text too?" Sam asked. "Of picture of sigils? Yeah." I replied and I call them up, putting it on speaker.

"Hey. You guys still in the tower?" Nate asked once he answers the phone. "Yeah, we just climbed back down." I replied. "What's with the picture you just sent us?" Sam asked as he looks at his phone. "I'll fill you in later. For now, just tell me who’s who." Nate said as Sam looks over the pictures. "Well, the dolphins are Richard Want. The trident is Joseph Farrell, and the two hands with the pearl is William Mayes." He replied.

"All right, great. Stay where there's good reception. I might need your help again." Nate said. "Wait, Nate. Did you find the treasure?" I asked him. "No, not yet. But I got a mechanism to solve here; I’ll let you two know." He replied. "Okay, then. I guess we'll just wait here for a few." I said and I hang up. "Well looks like we have to hang around here for awhile." I said and we just hang around the tower until both of us got another text from Nate. It was a picture of more sigils.

"Hmm. I've never seen the monkey one before." Sam said as he starts to text Nate.

Left to right:

Edward England.

Tariq bin Malik

Yazid-al-Basra

I've never seen the monkey sigil before.

"He'll figure it out. I'm sure." I said as we wait.

*Nathan's POV*

"All right, let's see what he makes of ’em." I said after taking pictures of three sigils on this large table. "You know...That kinda looks—" Sully said as I start to get a closer look at them then I realized something. "Hold on." I muttered as I pulled out some paper and pencil and started making a graphite copy.

"What're you doing? You just took pictures." Sully said as I go to the other little icon. "Hold that." I said as I hand him the paper copy of the first icon. "Y'know, Avery's recruits wouldn't've had smartphones, obviously..." I said. "Obviously." Sully said.

"So this would've been the only way for them to get to the next clue." I said as I make two more graphite copies and Sully chuckles. "These are clues?" He asked. "Yeah, lemme see." I said and I put the three drawings together, making a map. "Voila." I said as I hold them up to the light and Sully laughs.

"All right, these could be trade winds... yeah, and these look like latitudes...And I would guess that we are packing our bags again, boy-o." Sully said as I smiled until I noticed something and raises the drawings up higher. "What?" Sully asked me.

I point at a skull and bones with a saying over it and said. “Pro Deus quod licentia." Then I gasped. "No, no— it can't be." I said as I stumble back then lowered the drawings. "Can't be what?" Sully asked. "Oh my God. It's so obvious." I said, mentally hitting my. "Why didn’t I see this before?" I said. "Jesus, enough with the beautiful mind shit. What the hell are you talking about?" Sully asked me.

"Just, just, hang on." I said as Sully's phone buzzed. I picked up the phone and answered. "Sam. Did you get the photos?" I asked and I heard a laugh, and it wasn't Sam's.

"Here I am, I'm calling what I thought was Sullivan's phone... and look who picks up. How you been, Nate?" Rafe said as my blood runs cold. "Hey, Rafe. It's been a long time. How'd you get this number? Sullivan leave it on a cocktail napkin?" I asked him, sarcastically. "I wish. That only would've cost me a few hots of rum, right? No, no, I had to pay top dollar to find you guys." Rafe replied as Sully and I start to walk out of the temple.

"Yeah. Well, I hope you didn’t spend too much on this whole Avery thing. I hear the competition's fierce." I replied. "Yeah, you pulled off some clever moves there... but in the end all that matters is who Avery's treasure first." Rafe said and I chuckle. "That sounds like a bet." I said.

"Hey, Nate, you know I'm always game but my partner... Well, she prefers to... mitigate unnecessary risks." Rafe said. "Wow. Rafe Adler taking orders from somebody else. Oh, how times have changed." I said, snarkily. "Look, Nate. I'm gonna make you a one-time offer here...You drop everything...go home, live your life...and I'm willing to forgive and forget. And since you're there, I'm to assume your sister is there too. So the same goes for her. For old time's sake." Rafe said.

"As tempting as that sounds, Rafe...I gotta say, my sister and I...we're...not normally the kind of people who likes to quit while they're ahead." I said. "Okay." Rafe said then there was a moment of silence before he speaks again. "Pro Deus quod licentia. For God and liberty. These are nice pictures, Nate. Good composition." He said and I stopped in my tracks. "You hacked our phones." I said. "You stole my cross!" He said, annoyed.

"Listen, Nate... if you're half as smart as you think you are... you'll accept my offer. What’s it gonna be?" Rafe asked and I could hear another call coming in. I pulled back my phone and see that it was (y/n) calling me. "Listen, as nice as it's been to catch up with you, I...really got to take this call so..." I said as I put the phone back to my ear then I was about to hang up until Rafe speaks again.

"Well, Nate, one more thing— Nate!" He said and I bring the phone back up to my ear. "What?" I asked, annoyed. "You, uh... you do realize that your phones are equipped with GPS, right?" Rafe said and my eyes widen in fear at this. My mind starts racing as I realize he's about to go after Sam and (y/n)! "I'll see you soon, buddy." He said and he hangs up.

"Shit." I muttered. "Let me guess. Goons with guns on their way here now?" Sully asked and I start to dial (y/n)'s number. "(Y/n). Sam." I said. “For God and liberty." (Y/n) replied and I hear Sam chuckle. "Nathan, do you understand what this means?" He asked. "Guys, listen to me. Get off the streets right now. And destroy your phones." I said.

"What?" (Y/n) said, confused.

"What's going on?" Sam asked

"Rafe knows where we are! All right, you gotta find some place to hide." I said just as I heard gunshots from the other end. "Oh shit!" (Y/n) shouts. "(Y/n)!" Sam screams as more gunshots go off. "Sam? (Y/n)? Guys!" I shout but the call ends. "Damn it!" I said and I drop Sully's phone on the floor and stomp on it. "Hey...!" Sully said. "I'll buy you a new one." I told him and we start to run out of the tower.

"Sully! I think that's their tower!" I said once we get outside. I point at a tower miles and miles away from us and we see some explosions going off near it. "Oh, that's definitely their tower. Come on. This way." Sully said as I look over at the tower with worry. "Hang on, guys. I'm coming." I muttered and we start to make our way through the crowds and towards our car.

*(y/n)'s POV*

"Shit!" I muttered as Sam and I take cover from all the gunfire. We fired back and try to make our way around them. "Take this, assholes!" I shout as I throw a grenade at them. "(Y/n), look!" Sam said and points at a couple of motorcycles that wasn't being used. "Okay, follow me." I said and we start to run and shoot at a few guys until we get to the bikes. "Come on." I said as we revved up the engines of our bikes and take off, the convoy and other motorists started to follow us.

Sam and I drove away from them then weave and dodged any. Every now and then I would fire at them but I was just waving my gun behind me, blindly, trying to take out as many as I could.

Eventually, a car comes up to us and I was about to aim my gun at it until i saw that Nate was the one driving. "Hey, brother!" Sam and I said and we drive our bikes over to him, we were on either side of him, but some gunfire was preventing us. "Get closer!" Nate said to us. "We're trying." Sam and I said and we get closer.

"Okay, hop on." All three of us said. "Sam and (y/n), get in the damn car!" Nate yells. "(Y/n) and I are faster! Stop arguing!" Sam shouts and I look over to see a truck coming. "Watch out!" I screamed and I slowed down my bike as Sam said. "Oh shit!" And he slows down but the truck hits Nate and his truck rolls a few feet away.

"Nathan!" I screamed and I saw his truck starting to catch on fire. "Shit!" I said and I make my way towards him, just as he crawls out and shoots some more men. I pull up next to him and hold my hand out to him. "Hurry! Hop on!" I said just as one of the larger trucks come up to us. Nate grabs my hand and I help him up to my bike just as Sam drives up to us.

"Gun it!" Nate shouts as he sits behind me and the truck started coming after us. I revved up the engine and we take off. "Here! Take this!" I said to Nate as I hand him a gun. He takes it and starts to fire at the truck as Sam and I drive our bikes as fast and far away from the truck as we could. But the truck seemed to always be on our asses.

"How are we doing back there?" I asked Nate. "Not good! Not good at all!" He replied. "Keep shooting!" Sam shouts at him as we go through building and make it towards the docking area. "I am!" Nate shouts as he continues to fire at the truck. "I hate this truck!" He shouts. "Hang on, Nathan!" I shout and we drive through the dock area as best and fast as we could but it was still upon us.

"It's right upon us, guys!" Nate shouts. "We're only going as fast as we can!" Sam shouts and I look to see a truck blocking our way. "This is gonna be close, boys!" I said and I jerk my bike, making it fall on its side, and slide under the truck, Sam doing that same right behind me. We drive a few feet away as the truck crashes into the other truck, causing an explosion

We stopped and watch the explosion as we catch our breath. "Holy shit." Sam said as Nate leans his arm against my back and takes a breath as I chuckled. "That was fun." I said. "Oh yeah. Loads." Nate said after he laughs. "You guys good?" Sam asked. "Yeah." Nate and I said and three of us started to laugh from relief, the adrenaline rush still coursing through us. "Let's get outta here." Nate said as he pats my shoulder. "Agreed." I said and Sam and I take off.

The night we pulled up to the motel, where we see Sully leaning against his jeep. We waved at him then Sam and I parked our bikes. "All right, I think the coast is clear." Sam said after he gets off of his bike and looks around. Nate and I get off of ours and Nate pullsnout his journal. "Yeah. All right... Pro Deus quod licentia. This looks like a simple cipher." Nate said after putting some papers together, making them into a map.

"For God and liberty. It's their damn motto. All the paradise references. I can't believe we missed it." Sam said as Sully walks up to us. "See you three made it out okay." He said. "Way better than okay. We found Libertalia." Sam said, laughing. "Liber— Liber-what-ia?" Sully asked, confused. "Libertalia. Seems Avery founded the legendary pirate colony." I replied. "It's more of a pirate utopia really." said Sam.

"Okay. But what about the treasure?" Sully asked. "See, as the story goes... this place provided a safe haven for hundreds... maybe even thousands of pirates. And they shared everything. Property, resources..." Sam explains. "Money?" Sully asked and Sam nods. "And they kept all in one common treasury building." He said.

"Okay. So... Where is this... Commie pirate sanctuary?" Sully asked. "Right here." Nate said as he turns and shows what he circled on the map. "That island. Just northeast of King's Bay." He said. "And Rafe has a copy of this." Sully said and I rolled my eyes and we start to head to our hotel room. "Yeah, well, by the time Rafe figures it out... we'll be well on our way to Libertalia." I said as Nate chuckles and unlocks the door. "Tellin' ya that treasure...is as good as ours— ssshit." He said as we walked in the room, to see that it wasn't empty like we left it. "Oh hell." I muttered.

"How's the Malaysia job going, guys?" Elena asked as her and Cole were in the room looking at the maps we had. Both of them turn to us and I could see that Elena looked disappointed and Cole was pissed. "Seems like you two are a hair off course." Cole said, in a low voice.

"Guys, it's... It's not what it looks like." I said as I walk up next to Nate. "Really." Cole said in disbelief and anger. "Because what it looks like...is that you're searching for Henry Avery’s buried treasure." He said as he flips through the notes and maps. "And given the Shoreline soldiers that are all over town...I'd bet you're not the only ones looking for it." Elena adds as she goes over to the beds and picks up one of the guns we had.

"All right, well I... I guess it's kinda what it looks like. But, but we can explain. Look it's gonna sound crazy." Nate said, trying to assure them. "Try us." Cole and Elena said, as she places the gun down. Both of them stand in front of us, Cole folds his arm across his chest.

"Well, for starters, um...This is Sam. Sam Drake. Our brother." Nate said as he points at Sam, who was kinda hiding in the back. "Hi." Sam said, giving a little wave towards them. Both of them looked at us in disbelief before they look over at Sully. "I'm sorry." Sully mutters, apologetically.

"We...we thought he had died in a Panamanian jail." I tried to explain and walk up to them but they back away from me as Elena holds her hand out to us. "I need to—" she mutters before she places her hand over her mouth while Cole looks at me and I could see the anger was coming back into his eyes.

"But we were obviously very wrong. He's been stuck in there for fifteen years. And it's because of us." I said as I gesture between me and Nate. "And the guy who broke him out wants a lot of money. And the only way we can pay off the debt is Avery's treasure. But that’s the good news, we found it! It's on an island just off the coast." Nate explains.
"Okay, just stop!" Cole yells, angrily, and Nate and I jump. "Was there ever a Malaysia job?" He asked while Elena looks at us, pleadingly.

"I..."

"Well..."

"Okay...that's it." Cole grumbles and he takes Elena's arm and the two began to leave. "C'mon, C'mon, wait. Guys, wait!" Nate and I said, in unison. "I don't get you two." Elena said as they stop at the door then turn to face us. "Look, we wanted to tell you guys." Nate said.

"You know what, enough." Elena said, firmly. "No, we wanted to! But how could we?" I asked. "Oh, I don't know, just say it?! I mean, hell, you've told me about Iram a few years ago, (y/n)! Why was this different?!" Cole said, angrily. "We had to protect you guys." I said. "That is bullshit, (y/n). You just didn't have the nerve to face me!" Cole growled as he walks up to me. Then he turns to Nate and said. "And you didn't have the nerve to face your wife. Again."
"We knew both of you would react like this." Nate said and both of them give us offended looks.

"How would you react, Nate?" Elena asked him, tearfully. "You and (y/n) lied to us...for weeks. If you were killed, I...wouldn't have even known about it." She said. "Niether would I. And now you two have a brother?" Cole said as he gestures over to Sam before his eyes narrowed at us and looks between us. "Who are you two?" He asked. "Come on, Cole. I'm me. C'mon, it’s me." I said. "And I'm me too, Elena. It's different this time." Nate said and Cole scoffs as Elena mutters. "Oh my God."

"We have to save him. I don't even care about the treasure." Nate said. "I don't either. I just want to save my older brother." I said. "The look on your faces when you two walked into this room..." Cole mutters as he looks back at us then shakes his head. "If you're done lying to us...then you two should stop lying to yourselves and each other." Elena finishes and I look over at Cole, my eyes tearing up as Nate looks down at the floor in guilt.

"Cole..." I whispered and Cole holds his hand out to us. "We got a plane to catch. You two do what you have to do." He growled and he turns around, opens the door and Elena walks out. Cole glares at me then at Nate before he let's out a heavy sigh then walks out, shutting the door behind him.

I closed my eyes as the tears started to pour down my face and I turn around and head back in the room, Nate right behind me as he places his hand on my shoulder. "Hey... Hey, what are you two doing? Go after them." Sully said as I go sit on the edge of the bed and wipe my eyes with my hands as Nate goes to the table. "We're not done here." Nate replies.

"Well, maybe we should be." Sully said. "What are you saying?" Nate asked as he turns to Sully. "I'm saying maybe there's a smarter-way to save Sam." Sully said. "Such as?" Nate and I asked. "Such as, we give him a new identity. We... we... put him in hiding somewhere, I got contacts—" Sully said.

"He's been in prison for fifteen years— he's not going into hiding." Nate yells. "Okay, fine. You go after your wife, Nate." Sully said then he looks over at me and said. "And you go after your husband. Sam and I will head off for Libertalia." Sully said. "Without us? Come on, you'll get both of you killed." Nate muttedd as he turns back to the table.

"Really?" Sully said in disbelief before he laughs. "Kids, I've been doing this for a helluva long time. I think I might be able to handle—" he started to say but Nate yells over him. "Hey, you want to be helpful, Sullivan? Go keep an eye on them."

There was a long moment of silence as Nate turns to the table and starts to gather up the map and papers. I wipe away fresh tears then get up and help him. "Whatever you say." Sully said as he sets Nate's journal down on the table and walks out of the room.

"Need a hand with anything?" Sam asked us. "We got it." Nate and I growled in unison. "Just pack your bags." Nate said as I look up at the map. At that moment, Sam leaves and shuts the door. Nate sighs and sets the paper down on the table and braces his hands on top of the chair. "Nate..." I said, softly, but he doesn't answer.

"Nathan..." I said, alittle louder. "I really don't want to talk right now, (y/n). Let's just...let's just go get ready." He said. "Okay..." I said and I start to head to the closet to get my clothes. "I just hope that what we're doing is right." I said and I look over my shoulder at him as he looks over at me. "Because right now....it doesn't feel like it." I said. We stared at each other before I break the eye contact and pack up my stuff.
