Chapter 5: The Grave Of Henry Avery
*(y/n)'s POV*
"Well. Rafe's really going all in, isn’t he?" Sam said as we look out towards the cathedral, hearing and seeing explosions going off, as the snow falls on us. "Well; they're all concentrated around the cathedral, so that‘s good...because we are going to have that graveyard all to ourselves." Nate said, looking through his binoculars, as I pull out my walkie-talkie.
"Sully." I said. "Yeah?" He said. "Hey, listen, we're good to go here." I informed as I walk up to the edge of the cliff and see Sully's plane in the ocean. "Okay, kid. Happy hunting." He said. "Last chance to come with." I said and he laughs. "Yeah, well, unless you can find me an escalator, I think I'll pass." He replied. "All right. We'll see you in a few." I said as I wave towards him and Nate comes up next to me and waves at him as well.
"Hey, Nate—(y/n)---" Sully said. "Yeah?" Nate and I asked. "Just— Ah, just bring me back something shiny, will ya?" He asked. "That's the plan." Nate replied and Sully chuckles before I put the radio away. "Well... Let's go pay our respects to Captain Avery, huh?" Sam said and we start to make our way towards the cathedral.
"A Scottish cathedral. Strange place to bury your treasure, no?" Sam said, questionable. "Not really. I mean, by the time Avery would've sailed here, the place was already abandoned." Nate replied. "I guess that's true. Plus, with the massive bounty on his head...it'd be a good place to hide." Sam said then he looks over at us.
"So...what happened between you two and Rafe?" He asked. "We couldn't deal with him...and I'm pretty sure he'd had enough of us." Nate said. "We were still coming to grips with your, uh... death, and with his frustration from not finding the treasure...Well, I'm pretty sure he was ready to kill both of us by the time we bailed." I finished. "Ha. Imagine what he'd want to do to both of you now." Sam said. "Yeah. Trying not to." Nate and I said at the same time.
"Sam, listen. He's ruthless. I mean even more so than when we teamed up with him. I mean, I've heard stories." Nate informed and I nod. "So have I." I muttered. "Trust me, me too. All the more reason I don't feel bad about any of this." Sam said. "So, do either of you remember this?" He asked. "Oh, the cathedral grounds?" Nate asked him. "Yeah." said Sam. "Pretty much. Although it's been so long, it's a little hazy." Nate said. "I barely remember this place." I said as we jump down on another cliff and walk on through.
"This crane, explosives. I think stealing the cross might've made our boy Rafe a little nervous." Sam said as we keep hearing the explosion going off. "Yeah." Nate said. "Just a tad." I said as I hold up my hand and placed at least an inch of space between my pointer finger and thumb.
"Must've been a shock for Avery to come here after living in the tropics for so long." Nate said as we continue down a valley. "Ha. Well, I can sympathize with that." Sam said and I look over at him then I realized what he was talking about. "Oh, right right....because of the whole prison thing." I said. "Yeah. You have no idea how much I missed the cold." Sam said then we slide down a rocky slope and make our way down to another valley.
"What the hell is all this?" I asked as I pointed out to the large blue and white crates that were scattered around the valley. "It's excavation equipment." Sam replied. "Shoreline...?" Nate said, shocked. "What?" Sam and I say and Nate points out the name and the logo on the crates. "Look. I thought they were just by the cathedral!" Nate said and then we were spotted.
"Look, they're here!" One guard yells and they start to fire at us. "Oh, shit, get down!" I shout at my brothers and we duck behind some boulders. Then we pull out our guns and start to fire at the men.
"Okay. We're good." Sam said once we took out Rafe's men. "Yeah, nice to meet you too, Shoreline." Nate said, sarcastically. "Seems like they were expecting us." I remarked. "...And like they're searching away from the cathedral." Sam said. "Which means we should get to that graveyard, pronto." Nate said. "Exactly." Sam said and I nod and we began to make our way towards the graveyard.
"What is this place?" Sam asked as we come upon a small ruin with tons of Shoreline crates surrounding it. "The monks had several living quarters...the main one being by the graveyard, of course." Nate replied. "Location, location, location." Sam said as is all over to the crates. "More Shoreline equipment." I said. "At least no Shoreliners. Maybe we'll get lucky and they'll blow themselves up." Nate said.
"Now what do you bet...?" I said as I look over the crate and found a wooden box and open it. "Yep. Dynamite." I said as I grabbed one, light it up then threw it at the door of the former living quarters and blew up the door. "Got the door for ya, boys." I said. "That was...was very loud. Hopefully, they didn't hear us." Sam said. "Well, hopefully, we just blended in with the other explosion." Nate said and we walk into the quarters which had a large hole at the top.
"Look, there's a way up through the roof. That's too high for a boost, though." I said as I point at the hole. "Well, let's find something to climb on?" Sam said. "Yeah." Nate and I said as we began to look around.
"Hey, we can use this to climb out of that building." Nate said as he pulls out a yellow crate and I run over to him. I pull out another dynamite and throw it at the door in front of Nate and the crate. Nate ducks down as the dynamite explodes and takes down the door. "There ya go." I said to Nate.
"Yeah....take that, door." Nate mutters as he pushes the crate towards the door.
"You're pretty good with that stuff." Sam
said to me. "Well, I've blown a lot of shit up over the years. So has Nate." I said as Nate pushes the crate off of the little drop until Sam and I heard voices.
"The explosion definitely came from here. Let's do a full sweep, hey?" A voice said. "Shit, Shoreline. Hide!" Sam said and Nate and I go and hide. We hide along a stone wall and waited for the two guards to walk pass. As they walk pass us, we jump out behind them, grab them around the neck and take them out.
"Okay, I think we lost 'em." Sam said and Nate pushes the crate inside of the building and up against the wall towards the hole. "Up we go!" I said as I climb up the crate and up to the hole.
We walk over to the cliff to see a pole up high. Nate pulls out his rope and swings it towards the pole. "Got it." He said and he runs, jumps and swings. "Whoa, careful." Sam said as Nate grabs on some ledges. I pull out my rope and swing over to the ledge as Nate throws his rope at another beam and swings over to another cliff.
"Whoo. All right, you think you can do that, Sam?" Nate said as he gets up on the cliff and I grab onto the ledges and climb up. "What are you talking about? I taught you and (y/n) that move!" Sam exclaims as I throw the rope at the other pole and swing over to the cliff Nate's on. "All right, let's see it then." Nate said as I land in front of him. We take a few steps back and watch our older brother make his way to us.
"There, you see?" Sam said as he climbs up the cliff and comes over to us. "That was clumsy." I remarked and Sam chuckles and we continue to make our way up. "There's a ladder just out of reach." Nate said as we climb up to this little ledge that was big enough for us to walk on. "Gimme a boost." I said and Nate cups his hands and I step on his hands and he boosts me up. "Oh, be careful, (y/n)!" Sam said as I step on Nate's shoulder and I reach up to the ladder and climb up.
I get up then go over to the side of the cliff. "C'mere. I'll pull you guys up." I said and Sam comes over to me and I pull him up. "There ya... go." I said as I get him up and Nate comes over to me. "Alrighty, big guy." I said as I hold my hand out to him. He jumps and grabs it and I pull him up, with Sam's help. "Ah, thanks." Nate said and I pat his shoulder. "No problem." I said and we go over to the other side of the cliff and see the cathedral, which was closer.
"All right, there it is. The monks' dorm. Just a hop, skip, and a jump away." Nate said. "Ah, don't jinx us." I said and Sam laughs. "Exactly." He said and we see a rocky slope to the side. "Down we go." Nate said and he jumps down and slides down the slope. I look over at Sam then smile and shrug as I jump and slide down the slope.
"Ah! Whoo, burns a little." Nate said and I wipe off of the dust from my pants. "Well, those are fun." Sam laughs and we slide down another slope and jump over to a ledge.
"The next, he's paying us double to wipe them out." A voice below us said. "Shh. Quiet." Nate warns us as we climb around the cliff and see a group of Shoreliners walking and talking.
"You go where the money leads you."
"That's cold."
"It gets colder. I’m gonna take a leak while you educate our young recruit here."
"So what happened next? Did he put down the revolt?"
"With our help he kept it at bay. But once money ran out... well, there was no reason for us to stick around anymore."
Nate jumps down and takes down one of the mercenaries that was near us. "Nice one." Sam whispers as we jump down next to him. "You get the left one, I got right." Nate said to Sam and they go up to the two men and take them down and hide them in the high grass.
"Let's see if we can keep this up, boys." I said and we make our way around these things while taking out a few of the mercenaries that were hanging around. "Come on, let's get a move on." Nate said after we take out the men and make our way around and got closer to the cathedral. "Right beyond those walls." Nate said as he pointed out the building.
"Sam...(y/n), this way!" Nate said as he climbs up some pillars and we follow him. "So, this is what you two've been up to all these years? Jumping around ruins?" Sam asked us as we climb around some more ruins. "Yeah. That and... getting shot at." Nate said. "Blown up." I added. "Punched." Nate added as well. "Kicked." I said. "All right, all right. I get it." Sam said but we continued. "Knifed." Nate said. "Drugged." I said and Sam shook his head as we continue on.
"Ha ha. And that's that." I said as we get to the top of the ruins. "Ah, not quite. Still gotta climb higher to cross the ravine." Sam said. All right, I hope we're done sliding for a while. My ass is full of gravel." Nate remarked and I rolled my eyes at him. Then we come up to another gravel slope and Nate slides down it, throws his rope at a beam and swings over to the entrance of the cathedral. Then it was my turn and then Sam.
"I could get used to this." Sam said after we land. "Hey, give me a hand." Nate said as he gestures towards the door and I go over to him and help him open the door. "All right, I got it. Sam go." Nate said and Sam ducks under the door and turns around and holds the door. "Okay, sis. You're turn." Sam said and I duck under the door, turn and hold the other side of the door. "Okay, Nate." I said and he ducks under and runs under the door.
"And we're here." Nate said after Sam and I set the door down. "Yes we are." I laughed as I pat his shoulder. "Jesus. Look at this place." Sam said as we walk around the ruins. "Welcome to the Saint Dismas dormitory... alleged final resting place of one Henry Avery." Nate introduced, making Sam chuckle. "Let's find that grave." Sam said and we look around the tombs.
"Hey, Nathan....(y/n). Check it out. This one's got a pair of cutlasses. Just like the scroll from the cross." Sam said as we go over to the tomb he's looking at. "But the dates aren't right." I said as I look over the dates. "Well...one down and... a hell of a lot to go." Sam said as Nate looks through his notebook.
"Okay... crossed cutlasses, skull and crossbones, and the dates 1639 to 1699. We find a tombstone with all three and we're in business." Nate said to us. "Well...let's desecrate some graves, brothers." I said and we look around the graveyard.
I come upon a tomb that had the two cross swords. "Yeah, well...the swords are a match." I said and I wipe away the dirt and saw the date. "So is the year..." I muttered and wipe away and see the name on the tomb and my jaw drops. "Sam...Nathan, c'mere." I shout and they come over to me. "What, did you find it?" They asked me. "Look. Benjamin Bridgeman." I said as I point at the name. "That's Avery's alias." Sam said as Nate reaches out to skull in the middle of the tomb.
"Something odd about this skull though. It's like it doesn't belong to the stone." Nate said as he runs his hands over the skull. "Well yeah, what’s odd about it is...that’s not Avery’s sigil." Sam said. "Oh, yeah...I mean, the skull should be facing—" Nate started to say then the three of us look at each other. "Sideways." We said in unison and Nate turns the skull.
"What is that?" Sam asked as we hear a noise then a stone ladder appears next to the tomb. "Oh my God." Sam said as Nate and I laugh. "You ready for this?" I asked Sam. "Oh, I've been ready for a long time." Sam said and we go down the steps. "Let's see what we got..." Nate said and we pull out our flashlights and walk down deeper into the tunnels.
"It's a crypt." Nate said as we enter the crypt. "A crypt, hidden behind a secret door?" Sam asked. "I assume the secret door was added afterwards." I said. "To hide his loot." Sam said. "Well, fingers crossed." Nate said and we look around the crypt.
"Whoa, the gang's all here." I said as we enter another room to see three statues on crosses. "Jesus... Dismas on the left..." Nate said as we look them over. "Penitent thief." Sam said. "Gestas on the right..." I pointed out. "Jerk thief." Sam mutters and Nate and I laugh.
"Avery sure had a thing for Saint Dismas, huh?" Nate said. "Well, Avery fancied himself a good thief, right? Only plundered and murdered the non-British heathens." Sam replied. "Guess that's what passed for good back then." I laughed. "Good enough." Sam said, shrugging, and we go around behind the statues and see a large door.
"Is this a door? Looks like a door." Nate said as he tries to open the door. "I don't see a way to open it, though." Sam said as I look over the symbols on the door. "What are these star symbols?" I asked as we turn around and we see some lamps. "Some kind of lamp." Nate said as he looks them over. "Hey, smokey— Need your lighter over here." Nate said to Sam. "You know, that hurts my feelings." Sam said in a mock hurt voice. "Not as much as it hurts your lungs." I remarked. "Thank you, Father Duffy." Sam said as he lights the lamp.
"Ooh." Sam and I said as the lights come on and the fire spreads over to the little fireplaces. "Well isn't that something?" Nate said. "Uh-uh. The light's coming from the other side of the wall." Sam said as he turns back to the door. "All right, let's see here." Nate said as he goes back around the statues and looks through the little hole on the Gestas statue. "Ah. I can aim the lights." He said and I go over to the Jesus statue. I look through the hole and see the door and that you can move the lights. I move them on the door.
Then Nate goes over to Dismas statue and moves the light in the correct way. "Guys, that's it! You two got it!" Sam shouts and we go back over to the door. "It looks like a constellation." Sam said. "Yeah. That's Libra--the scales of justice." Nate said. "That's an interesting choice for a bunch of pirates." I said as Nate goes over to the knob. "Okay. Let's give this a shot?" Nate said and he goes and opens the door.
"Open sesame." Sam chuckles. "Wrong treasure." Nate and I said in unison. "Shush." Sam said, annoyed, and Nate and I laugh again and we see a large window with three large circular windows. "Well, nice view. No treasure though." Sam said. "No, but...look, you see those crosses?" Nate said as he points at one window and see there was three crosses that had circles etched around them and an opening to a cave that also had a circle etched around it.
"Oh, yeah. Hey, is that a cave... right below?" Sam asked as he looks at the window. "Yeah, I think Avery's trying to tell where to go next. Uh, there's one problem though. Going back that way means we have to go back toward the cathedral." Nate said. "And back towards Rafe." Sam said. "Shit." I muttered, despairingly. "Well, let's not keep him waiting." Sam said and we make our way out of the crypt.
"Spread out! You know the drill." A voice shouts. "Shit." Nate and I muttered. "They opened the gate up there." Sam said as we go and hide. "Well good, 'cause that's the way we gotta go." I said as the Shoreliners started to walk around and look for us. "All right, follow my lead." Nate said and we make our way around the ruins and avoid the guards, which there were many.
We go over to another door and we quietly open it and make our way through it. "And that's....how it's done." Nate said after we shut the door. "All right, boys, let's get out if here before they realize we gave 'em the slip." I said and we run. "How you holding up?" Nate asked Sam. "Great. Was kinda hoping to find the treasure back there, but... you know, it's never that easy, right?" Sam said after he chuckles. "That's been our experience." I said. "Plus there was that cool constellation thing." Sam said. "Yeah it was cool." Nate said as I nod in agreement l.
"Right under that high cross...that’s there Avery wants us." Nate said as we come around and see the hill with the crosses. "Well, what Avery wants, Avery gets." I said and then my radio goes off. "Kids? What's your status?" Sully's voice asked and pull up the radio. "Hey, Sully. We're on the trail, but the treasure's closer to the cathedral than we originally thought." I replied.
"Oh, boy. So what do you need me to do?" Sully asked and I look over at Nate who walks over to me. "Well, just keep those engines warm. We'll be back before too long." Nate said. "You got it. Keep me posted." Sully said. "Will do." Nate and I said in unison and I put the radio away and we make our way to the hill.
"Hey, you don't think the monks built this?" Sam asked after we used a pulling system to get us up on a cliff. "No way. It's some kind of pulley system." Nate replied. "Ah, to lift a whole bunch of treasure?" Sam asked. "To lift something..." I replied, shrugging, as we start to go over to a large cliff and climb around it.
"I can't feel my hands....I think my blood thinned out or something after all those years in Panama." Sam said as we climb around another cliff. "Yeah, well don't worry....worst case you lose a couple fingers." Nate said and Sam laughs. "I guess that's why you two have ten right?" Sam said and we chuckle as he gets to the top of the cliff.
"Hold on. I'll help you guys up." Sam said and he leans down and holds his hand out to us. Nate jumps and grab his hand and Sam pulls him up. "There ya go." Sam said then he leans down for me. "Okay, baby sister." He said and I jump and grab his hand then he pulls me up. "Thanks, big brother." I said. "No problem. Where would you two be without me, huh?" Sam said as we start to walk again. "Uh, probably at home...drinking hot cocoa." Nate replied. "Oh my God, that sounds good." I groaned as the snow falls down on us.
"What are you two, five?" Sam asked us. "Oh, tell us you wouldn't go for some hot cocoa right now." Nate said. "Well, I mean... yeah." Sam said, shrugging. "Exactly." Nate and I said and we walk over to the other side of the cliff. "Look over there!" Sam said as he points at the cliff we needed to get to. "There's no path along the cliff. All right, let's cut back inland." Nate said. "Sounds good." Sam said and we make our way around again.
"Fire in the hole!" A voice shouts and we hear two explosions. "Jesus." Nate and I whisper as we go hid in the high grass again. "How we lookin'?" One voice asked. "Still some debris blocking the way in. We can't get all the way through." The second voice said. "Kak. That was the last of the dynamite." The first man said. "Next patrol will bring more by. Just sit tight." replied the second man.
"We're getting closer to Rafe...." Sam whispers to us as we get around another cliff and climb up into a crawlspace. "Hey, careful...might be unstable after the blast." Nate said as we crawled through it. "Who does excavation with dynamite?" Sam asked. "Mercenaries...think Rafe would know better, though." I said as we come upon a cave with a wooden pole covering an opening.
"Hey, Sam. Help me with this." Nate said and he grabs the pole. "Whoa— What if it's the only thing holding the tunnel up?" Sam asked as he comes up to Nate. "Then I'll apologize." Nate said. "All right." Sam said and they hold up the wooden beam. "Okay, (y/n). Go!" Nate said and I run under the beam then turn around and hold the beam. "Okay, brothers." I groaned and Sam ducks under and helps me hold the beam and Nate comes through. "There, see? No problem." Nate said as we set the beam down. "Yeah, for once." Sam said and we continue on.
"Kid, storm's picking up. How's it looking?" Sully asked me through the radio. "We're about to head into the cave." I replied as I pull out the radio. "The cave?" Sully asked, confused. "Yeah...might lose contact for a bit. Don't get too worried." I said. "All right, I'll keep the porch light on for ya." He said and I smiled. "All right. Call you soon." I said and I put away the radio once again.
"We made it. It's quite the detour." Sam said after he laughs from relief as we cone upon the cross. "Let's go see what Avery left for us." Nate said. "Yes please." Sam said and we go towards the cave ands Sam scoffs. "Those Shoreline assholes were right next to this cave." He grumbles. "Yeah, but I think we're the first ones in here." I said and we walk deeper into the cave.
"Oh... is that a door?" I asked as we come up to a door. "It sure looks like it." Nate said and he goes over to a hole next to the door and points it out to Sam and I. "C'mere. Check this out." He said and he sticks his hand in it. "A little slimy. There's a handle in here or something." He said. "Well... Give it a— give it a pull." Sam said to him and Nate and I look over at Sam in shock. "What?" Nate asked as I said. "Could be a trap."
"You're already in there. What's the...what's the worst that can happen?" Sam asked as he looks over at Nate. "Uh, I lose my hand?" Nate said. "So we'll get you a nice hook." Sam replied and Nate gives him a look of disbelief and I roll my eyes as Sam said. "Give it a pull."
"Nice hook. All right, here we go." Nate said and he pulls the handle and the door opens and we chuckle. Then Nate pulls his hand out of the hole and wipes it on Sam's chest. "Really?" Sam said as we walk in. "Hello, hello." I said as Sam whistles. "Pretty interesting decor." Sam said as Nate goes over to a sign.
“For those who prove worthy, Paradise awaits... To those who prove false, behold your grim fate.” He reads. "Yeah, well I guess Avery was a better pirate than a poet." Sam said and I look over the sign with Nate. "This... this isn't Avery's." I said. "What do you mean?" Sam asked as he comes over to us.
"Look." Nate and I said in unison and Sam looks at it. "It's the Rhode Island Pirate." He mutters. "Thomas Tew." Nate and I said. "Yeah. But it can't be him. I mean, this is clearly his sigil, but... Tew died attacking the same treasure fleet as Avery." Sam replied. "Yeah, well at least that's what the stories tell us." Nate said as we walk around the room.
"If this really is Tew's mark... then that means he's involved in all of this... how?" Sam asked and the place started to shake. "That's a damn good question." I said then we see start to look around the room.
