Chapter 15: Avery's Descent

"This place doesn't look very stable." I said as we started to walk and Nate and I pull out our flashlights. "Yeah..." Cole and Elena whispered as we enter this large cavern. "Look. Fresh footprints." Nate said as he walks towards a little walkway. "They must've come this way." He said as we come next to him and I noticed that there was more than one set of footprints. "That's a lot of footprints." I said, alittle nervously. "She's right. Let's take this slow." Elena said and we continued on.

Suddenly, there was a loud boom and the walls of the cave started to shake. "What the hell was that—?" Cole asked. "My money's on Nadine's men." Nate replied. "Yeah, same here. They'll use any excuse to use dynamite." I said. "They'd have to be pretty dumb to use it in here." Elena said and I chuckled. "Yeah, they're pretty dumb." Nate said when my flashlight goes out.

"Uh oh." I said as I started to smack the flashlight to get it to work but nothing. "Well, good thing I still got my..." Nate started to say when his light goes out, plunging us into darkness. "You just had jinx us, didn't you?" I said to him. "You guys bring any spare batteries?" Cole asked us. "Yeah, yeah. But, they're at the bottom of the ocean." I replied. "We won't ask." Elena said. "And we won't tell." Nate said when both of our lights comes on. I sighed with relief and we continue on through.

"Guys, look. Footprints stop here." I said as we came into this room and up to this blocked up doorway. "They must've made it through and it collapsed behind them." Elena said as Nate comes up the door then grabs the wooden pole. "What are you doing?" I asked him. "Just gonna move this out of the way, here." He said as he starts to pull then I join in on pulling it. Then Cole and Elena started to help is but then we heard something rumble then all four of us look up to see that the large stone above the entrance started to fall.

All of us stand up and jump back as the stone lands on the rubble, blocking that way, completely. "Damn it." Cole grumbles. "We'll have to find another way." Nate said and we try to look around but then mine and Nate's flashlight begins to flicker again. "Oh no." I muttered. "Just hold out a little longer...!" Nate pleads but both of our lights go out, putting us into darkness once again. "Crap." Nate mutters. "Hello darkness, my old friend." I muttered as I hear Nate hitting his flashlight.

"Come on. Damn it." He grumbles, annoyed. "Hey— you still have Sam's lighter?" I asked Nate. "Yes! Good idea." He said and I hear him pull out the lighter and start to flick it on. "C'mon. C'mon, c'mon, c'mon." Nate said, desperately, as he tries to flick the lighter,  but nothing. "Of course he used it all up." He said, annoyed, and I let out a sigh. "Smoked like a damn chimney on the boat ride over..." I muttered.

"Relax, I brought some matches." Elena said. "You did?" Nate and I asked her. "Of course." She said then him hear a match run across a surface then a small light appears on the other side of the cave, where I could just make out Elena standing there. "There we go." She said and I see Cole walking up to her as Nate and I make our way over there.
But Elena scoffs and drops the match. "Ow! Sorry. Just... one sec." She said and I hear footsteps leaving. "Hello?" Nate calls out. "Over here." Elena said, it sounded like she was higher up and a few feet away. I try to take baby steps when I heard something hit the cavern roof. "Ow! Ow, that's my head." Nate exclaims just as I felt someone step on my foot.

"Ow! That's my foot." I said. "Sorry." Cole said as we try to walk through until we see the bright yellow-orange color of flames a few feet ahead of us. "Over here." She said and we go over to her to see she had lit up a torch and was lighting another one. "Thanks. Glad you came prepared." Nate said to her as he takes the second torch. "Somebody had to." Elena said, smiling. "C’mon, let’s find a way forward." Cole said as we start to look around.

"Nice romantic lighting, huh?" I asked and Cole looks over at me. "Yeah, you're right. All that's missing is a nice cooked dinner and music." Nate said. "You guys have a funny idea of romantic." Cole said, smiling, which made me laugh. "Yes we do." Nate and I said, in unison, as I look up to see a hole.

"Hey, this looks promising." I said, pointing it out to them. Nate nods then looks over at me. "Boost you up?" He asked me. "Yeah." I said and Cole goes up to him. "Here, I'll hold that." He said as he takes the torch out of Nate's hand. Then Nate goes and cups his hands. "C'mon." He said and I step into his hands and he boosts me up into the hole.

"Okay." I muttered then I turned around and stood up as Elena gets boosted up and I help her up. Then Cole was next then he hands me the torch then leans down in the hole. "C'mon, man." He said and he helps Nate up. "Thanks." Nate said to him. "Watch your head." Elena said to Nate once he was up and I hand him his torch. "Yeah..." Nate said and we continue through the cave then jumped down to another part of the cave, which was full of hanging human arm bones.

"Whoa." Nate and I said, in shocked awe. "What the hell is this...?" Cole asked as Elena said. "This is creepy." I walk up to this board and saw something written on it. "The hands that stole from me." I read. "Wow Avery's not even pretending to be sane at this point." Nate remarks. "No kidding." I said. "I don't like this place." Elena said, uncomfortable. "Yeah, this is...unsettling." Cole said. "Agreed. Let's get out of here." I said and we start to look around and find a way out of here.

"Hey, look. Avery had some gibbets left over." Nate said as we come up to a large room. "Gibbets." Elena corrected. "What?" He and I asked. "It's pronounced JIH-bets." She said. "Are you sure?" I asked her. "Yeah." She replied. "Well. No one likes a know-it-all." Nate mutters then she turns to him. "Gibbets." She whispers to him, making him roll his eyes while Cole and I snicker at this.

Then we headed into another tunnel and saw something on the sides of the wall. "Wait, is that... a mummy?" I asked as Nate walks closer to get some light. But then some sparks appear on the mummies and I grab his arm and pull him back as an explosion goes off, making my ears ring for a few moments.

"You okay?" Nate asked me. "Yeah. You?" I said. "I'm fine. Thanks, by the way." He said. "No problem." I said. "What was that?" Elena asked as her and Cole come up next to us. "Trap. Avery really didn't want any trespassers down here. All right, watch your step." Nate said. "Uh, You're the one that stepped on it." I said to him. "Fine, watch my step." He corrects and we slowly go down the tunnel when we see more mummies and sparks appears in front of them.

"Ah, hell—!" Nate said and we ran back a few feet away just as it explodes. "Ah, Damn it!" Nate coughs as the rest of us started coughing from the smoke before it clears. "Are you okay?" Elena asked him. "Ah, so far so good... Maybe I'd just stay a little ways back." He said and we started walking down where we see more mummies with bombs.

"Oh crap." I muttered and we ran as fast as we could and go some distance between us and the mummies as they exploded. "You guys okay?" Nate asked as we coughed once again. "Yeah..." Cole, Elena and I said. "Well, now we know what caused the explosion we heard earlier." Cole said. "Yeah, no wonder so many parts of this passage have caved in." Nate said.

"Hey guys— I found a shortcut." Elena said, excitedly. "How do you know it's a shortcut?" I asked her. "Trying to be optimistic here." She said. "Oh. All right." I said and we make it through the tunnel then come up to more mummies. "Oh damn it. More mummies." I said. "Don't explode, okay?" Nate pleads. "Just... careful." Cole said to us and we try to get through the tunnel, slowly.

But once again they start to light up, and we ran. "Agh! Jesus— ! What did I just say?!" Nate shouts as they explode behind us as we ran as fast as we could. "Oh, for God's sake—!" I screamed as we come upon more mummies and we continued to run as it explodes. "Oh, this can't be healthy to breathe." I coughed as well as everyone

"Are you guys okay?" Elena asked us. "Fine." I said. "Fine, I— Fine. I wish I'd brought ear plugs. Am I yelling?" Nate asked. I shake my head as I cough once more then we see a mummies tied up to a board. Nate and I walk up to it, noticing that it didn't have any explosions on it. "Guys, careful." Cole said, warningly. "Yeah." My brother and I said as we looked over the mummy.

"And Avery's gone all Egyptian. Except this mummification wasn't, you know, voluntary." Nate said as I shudder. "Still creepy." I muttered as we go down a trail and see a blue flare on the ground. "Well... we're back on the trail." Nate said as I point out the footprints. "The footprints go this way." I said as we follow the prints.

"Be ready for a fight." Nate said to us. "Oh, I always am." Elena said while Cole and I just nodded. "Wait, is that in reference to me?" Nate asked her, worriedly. "No. Would you calm down?" She said. "You calm down." Nate grumbles and I rolled my eyes as we follow the prints.

"Guess these guys weren't paying attention." I said as we see a few dead bodies. "There's no sign of Sam." Nate said, a worried tone laced his voice. I look up at my brother and place my hand on his shoulder, he looks down at me as I give him a worried look as well. "We'll find him." Elena assured us and we look back at her and Cole, both of them giving us encouraging smiles. We nodded at them and walked on.

Then at one point I heard something beeping. I looked down and saw that it was a grenade, which made me gasp. "Ah! Guys, get down!" I shouted and they do so, dropping their torches, as the bomb explodes and some of the Shoreliners come out and open fire on us. "You idiots trying to bring the whole place down?!" Nate yells at them as we have another shootout with these morons.

It seemed like wave after wave of Shoreliners came after us but luckily there was four of us and we were able to hold our own as we take out a group. Then we go to the next section and shoot at more Shoreliners, rinse and repeat. Then at one point, those morons set off an exploding mummy, killing them. "Well, for once, I appreciate Avery's exploding mummies." I coughed as I look over at my brother. "Yeah, I agree." He coughs. "We should get those flares." Cole said. "Good idea." Nate said as we walk over and all of us pick up a flare.

"The mouths that spoke ill of me." Elena reads on a sign near us. "I'd hate to see this guy's Christmas tree." Nate said. "I don't see any footprints. We must be on a different route than the others." Cole points out. "All right, let's see if we can catch up." I said and we start to walk deeper into the cave.

"Looks like a fight broke out." Elena said as we see skeletons strewn about on the ground. "Yeah, Tew's men versus Avery's." I said until we found a door. "Excuse me." Nate said as he goes to the door and opens it then unheard something clank on the ground. I look down and saw a key. "Hello..." I said with intrigue as I pick it up.

"Some kind of key." Cole said as I look it over. I shrug and start to pocket the key when Elena asked. "What's that note?" I look down and see there was a piece of paper down on the floor. "Oh, right." I said then pick it up and read it as I stand up. "It's uh... it’s from Tew to his men." I said as I read the note over. "We can use the key to get out of here." I said. "That's good." Elena and Cole said as I put the note away and we continued through, and dodged some more of those stupid mummies.

"Aaannnd I'm back to hating these freaking things." I said after we ran away from some more exploding mummies. "Yeah me too, sis." Nate coughs. "Oh, my ears just popped." Elena said. "Yeah mine too." said Cole. "Yeah. We're definitely descending." I said then we continued through.

"That's our way out of here." Nate said as we see natural light shining through a cavern with a bunch of hanging corpses. "Ah— God, are those the rest of Tew's men?" Elena asked, disgusted. "Yeah, gotta be." Nate said. "We know Avery likes to make an example of his enemies." I remarked. "He definitely likes making exploding mummies." Cole said. "Yeah. Let's, uh... tread carefully in here." Nate said as we walk up to a door and I notice there was a keyhole.

"Keyhole... Key." I said as o dog in my pocket and start to pull out the key, until Elena comes up to me and grabs my arm. "Wait... it could be a trap." She said. "Yeah, we really don't have much of a choice." I said as I pull the key out of my pocket. "Oh boy." Her and Cole sigh. "But... I have a good feeling about this. Yeah?" I said. "Do it." Cole said to me and I could tell he was still hesitant about it.

I inserted the key and the door opens just fine, which made me and Nate chuckle with relief. "You see?" Nate said to Elena but then all four of us get caught by a net. "Damn it, I knew it." Cole mutters. "Yeah, when I suggested for us to be closer, this isn't what I meant." I said as all four of us were kinda squashed close together.

"Well, at least we didn't get blown to bits..." Nate said when we heard mummies starting to explode. "Ah, shit." Nate mutters. "You just had to open your big mouth!" I said then I look over at Elena and Cole. "You guys didn't brinng a knife by any chance, did you?" I asked. "No..." Elena said as Cole shakes his head then points behind me. "But that guy's got a sword." He said and I look over my shoulder to see a corpse hanging with a sword sticking out of him. "Here, help us swing this thing."  Elena said and all four of us started to swing towards the corpse while the mummies exploded.

"I got it!" Nate yells as he grabs the sword then cuts the rope, releasing us from the net. "Guys!" Cole and Elena shout as we get up and the explosion were getting closer. "RUN!" I shouted. "Don't look back, just run! Don't stop!" Nate screams as all four of us run for our lives.

Then I tripped on my feet and try to get up. "(Y/n), move your ass! Get up!" Cole said as he goes to help me up. But then an explosion goes off and he grabs me and both of us began to tumble down. I ended up landing on my back with Cole on top of me then he looks at me and smiles. "Saved your life." He said and I smiled. "Only because of my clumsy ass." I said and he chuckles. "Sounds like your losing your touch." He remarks and we smiled.

He was about to lean into me when we heard another explosion and then Nate and Elena tumbled some feet away next to us. "Thanks, Captain Avery." Nate chuckles then he looks over at me. "Just like old times, huh?" He asked and I nodded as Cole gets off of me. "Yeah, just like old times, right Elena?" I asked but then I frown when I noticed that she hadn't moved.

"Nate?" I said with worry as he looks over at her. "Elena?" He asked but she doesn't respond and he gets up then cups her face as he shakes her. Cole and I go over to her, my heart pounding in my chest. "Hey. Elena, c'mon. Elena!" Nate exclaims with worry as Cole kneels down on the other side  of her and was about to check her pulse when she let's out a groan. "My... hero..."

"Oh no, you didn't do that." Nate said, slightly annoyed, as she begins to laugh and Cole splashes some water at her. "Damn it, Elena!" Cole grumbles as he stands up while she continues to laugh and he comes over to me. "That's not funny." Nate grumbles as starts to lay on his back. "Oh, you have done much worse." Elena said to Nate as he sighs.

Cole looks over at me and said. "C'mon, let's give them some space." He said and we walked a few feet away before Cole stopped then looks me over. "Well...I almost had a heart attack." I said as I look up at him and fold my arms across my chest. "Same here." He mutters then we look at each other in the eyes. "(Y/n), if something were to happen to me, would you be that worried?" Cole asked me, as he gestures his head towards Nate and Elena. Obviously,  he was referring to what happened earlier.

"Of course, Cole. Like I said, the reason I lied was that I was afraid of losing you. You're one of, if not the most important, person in my life." I said as he raises his eyebrow. "One of?" He asked. "Well, my brothers, Sully and Elena are the others." I said and Cole smiles then chuckles. "Don't worry, I get it. You do have a big heart, cowgirl." He said then he stands in front of me the pushes a loose strand of hair behind my ear before he leans down and kisses me.

I kiss him back for a few moments then I pull back and smirk. "Good talk." I whispered. "Good talk." He said back then we went to go kiss again when a explosion some miles away goes off. We jumped back as Nate and Elena come up next to us. "That's gotta be Sam. C’mon." Nate said as he start to run. "At least the gunfire means he's still alive..." I said as Cole, Elena and I follow him. "Yeah...or now." Nate said.
