Chapter 14: New Devon

"Well, I guess that's one way to crush a rebellion." Nate remarked as we look at the scene of hundreds of skeletons in cages. "I have to wonder if this was always the plan." Cole said as he and Elena come up next to us. "What...to slaughter all the colonists?" I asked him. "No...To lure them here in hopes of finding a utopia. Only to rob them of everything that they have." He replied.

"Well, we’re dealing with a bunch of pirates." Nate said. "Well... that is pretty diabolical, even for pirates." Elena points out as we walk up the large wall of New Devon. "Well, looks like we're gonna have to go up and over." I said as we look over the wall. "Yeah, you're right. Time to start climbing." Nate said and we started climbing on the boards, that held the cages, and made our way to the wall.

"Wow." All four of us said as we got to the top of the wall and looked out at the abandoned colony. "Welcome to Avery's neighborhood." Nate introduced. "It’s a nice place. If you don't mind some structural problems and water damage." Elena said. "Clearly some drainage issues." I said, smiling. "A real fixer-upper opportunity." Cole said and all of us chuckle.

"Okay, so... Looks like somebody blew that dam and then flooded the whole place." Elena said after she pulls out her binoculars and looks out. "You know, I forgot. Pretty good at this." Nate said to her and the two stare at each other for a few moments before she goes back to the binoculars. I look over at Cole and we shared a look, a small smile formed on his face, before Elena speaks up.

"All right, so which one of these do you think is Avery's?" She asked. "Ah, my money’s on...that one. One that's still intact." Nate said as he moves her binoculars over to the right. "Ooh. You're not so bad at this either." She said to him. "Yeah, well, you know, had a little practice, read a few books." Nate bragged. "And also with the help of his better twin sister." I added and he scoffs at this. "Oh yeah, you wish." He teased and I push his shoulder when Elena gasps. "Shit. Shit."

"What? What?" Nate, Cole and I asked and she hands the binoculars to Nate. "The front door." She said and Nate looks through the binoculars then whispers. "Sam."

"What?" I said, shocked, and he hands the binoculars to me and I look through them. I towards the door to see Rafe, Nadine and some of their people pushing Sam towards the front door. "He's still alive." I said with relief. "Yeah, for now. Come on." Nate said to us. "All right, keep your eyes open for Shoreline types..." I said to Elena and Cole as I hand her binoculars back. "Yep." They said and we start to make our way to Avery's building.

"You think they found the treasure?" Cole asked after we made our way through some houses and taking out a few Shoreliners on the way. "Well, let's hope not. For Sam’s sake." Nate replied as we come up to this broken down tower and Nate walks up to it and found a note. "It's addressed to Richard Want. Signed Adam Baldridge." He said as he hands me the letter and I look it over.

"They were both Founders?" Elena asked. "Yeah. Looks like they were turning on each other." I said as I read the note. "But why?" Nate asked. "Greed. Paranoia. Money." Cole listed off. "Yeah, well, more money, more problems." Nate said and we continued on

After swimming, climbing and then sliding down a broken down house into some more water and some more climbing, we make it to another building that was alittle more intact than the other houses we've come through. "Hey look— Thomas Tew's sigil." I said as I pointed out the painting of the sigil to the others.

"So we're in his mansion." Elena said. "Second in command. Going up the pirate hierarchy." I said to her and we turn the corner and enter this room. Inside was a long dining table with many corpses laying either in the chairs or on the table. "Good lord." Elena and Cole exclaimed in disgust.

"Looks like we found the party." Nate said. "Looks like we're a little late." I said, making my brother chuckle as we started to walk around the table, looking it over. "Hey, Nate...(y/n). Check it out." Elena said as she holds up a wooden plaque with another sigil on it. "It's another sigil." Nate said as I look down at the table and saw several plaques with different sigils on them.

I tapped my brothers' shoulder and pointed those out to them. "See that?" I asked as his eyes widen. "Oh my God..." He said, in shock. "What?" Cole and Elena asked. "It's them." Nate and I said, in unison. "Guys, these are the pirate captains that founded Libertalia." Nate said. "What the hell happened here?" I asked as we look them over.

Cole goes to one corpse and picks up a goblet. "Well, I'm no forensics expert, but I would say... bad drinks?" He said, shrugging. "Apparently." Nate and I said as we circled the table. "So, what was this? Some kind of...wealthy pirate suicide cult?" Elena asked, making Nate and I chuckle. "Yeah, not likely. Not these guys." I said as I pick one of the goblets and look at it.

"On behalf of Lord Avery, I invite you to my manor at sundown tomorrow. The time has come to abandon our animosities... and reunite under the banner of God...and liberty. Signed Thomas Tew." Cole said as I look up as I see him holding a paper.
My jaw dropped then I look over at my brother and right away I could tell he and I were on the same page. "What do you bet..." Nate said as he goes at one end of the table and I go the chair next to him and both of us pick up the sigils that were next to the two empty chairs.

"Thomas Tew." Nate said, holding up his sigil.

"Henry Avery." I said, holding up the other sigil. "Looks like our hosts didn't stick around to clean up heir mess."

"Well that wasn't very gracious of them." Elena said as Nate and I set the plaques down. "Okay, so... So these guys sparked a full-scale revolt when they claimed the treasure for themselves." Nate said to Elena and Cole. "Now, they took care of the colonists, but then they had to deal with each other. And I'm guessing things got pretty messy." I said and Nate nods.

"Agreed. So, Avery and Tew invite them up here. To umm... Ah, what was it, uh— ?" Nate said as he looks over at Cole, who looks down at the paper. "Abandon our animosities." He said. "Right. Avery makes a grand toast..." Nate said and he picks up a goblet and acts like he's making a toast. "For God and liberty, Argh, ahoy, mateys, all that." He said, making the rest of us laugh.

"And they all take a swing... Except these two." I said as I point at the two empty chairs. "And just like that." Nate said as he snaps his fingers. "All the treasure of Libertalia becomes the sole possession of two men." He said and he and I look at each other and we smiled. "These are... These are... some of history's greatest pirates... and they all perished... in an instant. At this very table." I said as I look back at the table.

"It's incredible." Elena said.

"Fantastic." Cole mutters.

"Yeah." Nate and I said then we look over at them and noticed they were staring at us.
"I'm— I'm sorry."  Nate and I said in unison as we stared at our respected love ones. "It's okay." They said at the same time. "So, since our missing hosts aren't here at Tew's manor..." Cole said as he looks at us. "We should head over to Avery's." Nate finished. "Yeah. Let’s go." Elena said and we leave the building and head to Avery's.

"And we are officially inside Henry Avery's house." Nate said as we make our way inside minutes later. "Word of the day...ostentatious." I said as enter a large main room of the building. "So why didn't he kill Thomas Tew? Was he like his right hand man?" Elena asked us. "Yeah, that's exactly what he was." I said.

"Can you imagine taking orders from a paranoid psychopath?" Nate asked, chuckling. "Yeah, sounds like my first job." Elena said. "What, the producer on your TV show?" I asked her. "No, my manager from Macho Nacho." She replied and we looked over at her.

"You worked at a Macho Nacho?" Nate asked her. "It was a high school job." Elena replied. "Did you wear one of those hats?" Cole asked her, laughing. "The point is...my boss was a paranoid psychopath." Elena said, annoyed. "He was the manager at a Macho Nacho." Nate stated. "Just watch it, okay?" She chuckled.

"Paranoid psychopath is, actually, what I called one of my ex-girlfriends when we broke up." Cole said. "Oh?" I said, a bit curiously. "Yeah, long story short, she thought when I said I had to go shoot photos, that meant I was going out and meeting up with a supermodel and hooking up with her." He replied. "And were you?" Nate asked him and he scoffs and laughs. "If by supermodels, you mean the beauty of nature or ancient buildings then yes." He joked and we kinda laugh.

"Was there anything else she did that made you label her that?" I asked and he frowns a bit. "Yeah, but I really don't like talking about it." He said and I frown then nodded, letting him know I was dropping it, then continued on in the building.

"Look. Shoreline barricaded the front door." Nate said as he a pile of furniture up against the door. "And left a bunch of muddy footprints behind." Elena points out and we look down to see a bunch of muddy footprints. "Let's see where they went." I said and we began to follow them.

"So, where are all the Shoreline guys?" Cole asked. "I know, right? I expected to see someone by now." I said. "Yeah, it's like they all up and vanished." Elena said as we head up the grand staircase. "You don't suppose there're... pirate ghosts?" Nate asked and I look over at him. "Don't even joke about that." I threatened and he chuckled as we continue to follow the footprints.

"Footprints go through this door." I said as we come up to this large white and gold door. Then Nate goes to open it but struggles. "Crap, it's blocked from the other side." He grumbles. "Why bother barricading their path, unless..." Elena said then she trailed off as Nate and I exchange a look. "They found something." We said then Nate nods at me and said. "All right, help me push this open."

I nod and lean against the door and started to shoulder charge at the door to get it open when we heard a noise. "Oh shit! Shoreline." Cole shouts and we ducked in cover and started a shootout with the Shoreliners.

"You guys all right?" I asked the others once we finished taking out the Shoreliners. "Yeah..." They replied. "They were just waiting to ambush us." Elena said. "Yeah. All right, let's get that door open. See what they didn't want us to find." Nate said and we make our way back to the door.

"Okay, here we go. You ready?" He asked me. "As I'll ever be." I said and we shoulder charge against the door once again then we backed up and charged right through the door and we ran into the room and hit this couch that stopped us. We look up and see a skeleton on the couch.

"Oh. Hello there." Nate and I greeted as we get up and Elena comes in and picks up a piece of paper. "What is it?" I asked her as she looks it over, her eyes widen. "It's a letter. Signed by... Avery." She replied. "Really? Read it." Nate said, curiously.

"My loyal subjects....As the sun sets on our glorious paradise, we must endeavor to preserve its riches...The traitorous Tew knows our secrets, so we must act quickly. Destroy the dam, cleanse New Devon..." she reads as we walking along this hallway. "Here we go." I muttered. "Uh-huh." Elena said before she continues to read. "...and move my treasure through the passage to my ship."

"Tew and Avery turned on each other." Nate said. "Are you really surprised?" Cole asked him. "Well I guess not." Nate said and I let out a small chuckle. "Pirates will be pirates." I muttered and Nate nods as Elena holds the note out to him. "Here you go." She said and he takes it and puts it in his journal. "Thanks." He said.

"Let's go find that passage." I said and we enter another room, which was a large library. "Wow." I whispered in awe. If we weren't in such a hurry, I would love to look through all of these books and maybe take a few with me to read. That is if these books were still in good condition, which I kinda doubt but...a girl can dream.

"There's no more footprints; they end here." Elena said as she comes up to the other side of the room, where there was a large desk. "Okay, so...where did they go?" Nate asked. "Pirate ghosts." Cole and Elena said, jokingly, making Nate and I laugh.

We began to look around when I come up to the desk and saw something behind it. I walk over to it and picked it up. Turns out it was a lighter, Sam's lighter. "Nate!" I said and he runs over to me. "What? Whatcha got?" He asked me and I stand up and hold up the lighter. "Call me crazy but...this looks like Sam's lighter." I said as I hand it to him. "It is." He whispers after he looks it over.

"Did he drop it?" Elena asked. "Yeah, on purpose. Whatever it is we're looking for has to be somewhere around here." Nate said. "There's gotta be another way out of this room." Cole said, exasperated. "Maybe that passage Avery mentioned in the letter. But where's the switch?" I said as we began to look around for any type of switch.

"Nate...(y/n)..." Cole calls out after looking around a few minutes. "Yeah... Did you find something?" Nate asked him as we go up to him. "I think so." Cole said as he stands next to the globe, which was next to the desk. He pushed the globe and we heard a loud noise. We look behind the desk and see that the floor started to form as stairs. "Whoa." Nate and I muttered. "It's a good thing they figured that out for us." Elena said then I looked over at Cole.

"How did you do that?" I asked him. "There's a bloody fingerprint right here where Libertalia should be, and I... pushed it." He said as he gestures to the globe and I smiled. "Nicely done." Nate praised. "You're getting good at this too." I said and I could see Cole's cheeks turning a little pink. "I try." He said, shrugging, making me chuckle.

"So the letter said that Avery was moving his treasure to the Ship." Elena said as we start making out way down the spiral stairs. "Yeah." Nate and I said. "Do you guys think the treasure's still on the island?" She asked us. "I think— Uh..." Nate stammers then he looks at me. I shake my head then both of us let's out a sigh. "It doesn't matter any more." We said as we make it to the bottom of the stairs and come up to a closed gate.

"Here we go." I said as we go over to the gate. "Careful, you two." Cole said and Nate goes to the wheel next to the door and turns it until the door opens up. Or just enough for us to duck under and get through.

"Looks like Avery built himself a panic cave." Elena said as we see an entrance of a cave in front of us. "Yeah, I wonder where this goes?" Nate asked when the door shuts behind us, making all four of us jump and turn to it. "Crap." Nate and I muttered. "Guess we're gonna find out." Cole said and Nate and I sigh at this before we start to make our way into the cave.
