Chapter 10: Marooned
Ugh...what the hell? I thought as I start to slowly open my eyes. I groan in pain for a moment then began to cough as I turn to my side then make it on my hands and knees. I cough up the water then I wipe my mouth with the back of my hand and look around to see I was on a beach. I was also alone. Both of my brothers were nowhere to be found.
"All right... c'mon, (y/n). I gotta get off this beach." I said as I stand up and start to stagger across the beach. "Nate! Sam! Guys, can you hear me?" I called out but nothing. "Maybe farther up shore." I said to myself as start to pick up my pace. "All right, first things first— get to higher ground. First rule, Higher ground. Find out where you are." I muttered.
"Nate! Sam! C'mon, this isn't funny! C'mon answer me please!" I shouted but no response back. I start to climb over a fallen branch but thanks to the rain, that was still pouring, I slip and fall into the muddy beach. "Ah, shit. All right." I grumbled as I get back up and continue walking. "Nathan! Sam! Guys, are you there?" I called out again then I walk along some rock formation then jump down when I see someone crouching over a box.
I get closer and hide behind a large rock, just in case if it's one of those assholes but as the person stands up and talks I realized who it was. "Oh, for God's— Of course. Everything's gone. Wait, maybe that's a good sign. Maybe Sam or (y/n) took it. Well, on the bright side, can't lose anything else... besides my life. Talking to myself, that's— that's the first sign of... being crazy." Nate said, aloud. "I've always said you were crazy." I said as I walk out behind the rock.
Nate turns around to see me and smiles. "Oh thank God!" He exclaims as he runs towards me and we hug each other. "You alright?" He asked me once he pulls back from the hug. "Besides getting shot at and almost drowning? I'm doing fantastic!" I said as I give a fake smile and a thumbs up. "Well at least you didn't lose your sarcasm." Nate said and I give a short bow to this. "I'll be here all week." I replied and he rolls his eyes.
"Okay wannabe comedian, let's see if we can find our brother and get off of this island." Nate said and I nod as we start to make our way around this island. We come upon this cliff and we look down at the ground. "Okay. All right... I'm gonna go first." Nate said and I look over at him. "You sure?" I asked. "Yeah..." he said then he looks down and jumps down to the ground, which the cliff was alittle bit higher up than we thought.
"Ah, shit!" I hear him scream. "You okay?" I asked him. "Oh, just fine...might've broke my feet but....I'm fine." He said and I rolled my eyes at this. "Well...look out!" I said and I jump down and landed next to him and I realized why he screamed out in pain. That shit hurt!
"Ah! Mother of God!" I screamed in pain. "Yeah, not so funny now, huh?" Nate asked me and I glare up at him. "Just push through... Just push through it." I said then we come upon a ledge. "Whoa!" I screamed as the ledge began to give out under my feet. Nate grabs the back of my shirt collar and pulls me towards him and both of us started to lean up against the stone wall. "Oh, to hell with this place." I said as he and I start to shimmy our way across the narrow ledge and to the other side of the cliff.
"Gotta keep going, gotta keep going." Nate said as we start to climb around the cliffs and rock climb our way around. I started to climb up this one cliff but the rain made the rock ledges so slippery I couldn't hold onto it. "Aaaah!" I screamed as I start to fall but Nate grabs my hand. "I gotcha!" He said and he tries to pull me up but he loses his grip with his other hand on the rock and both of us fall. "Aaaahhhh!" Both of us screamed as we fell a few feet and landed on the ground just as my vision goes black.
My eyes flickered open as I look around to see I'm in a cave. I look over to my right side and see Nate, who was still asleep, then I placed my hand on his shoulder. "Nate...Nate...Nathan!" I said as I shake his shoulder but he doesn't move. "Great..." I muttered and I stand up and walk up to the opening to the cave we were in. I run my hand over my face then look up to see a light blinking at me. I look at this, curiously, until I realized it was Morse Code.
"S... Sic parvis magna. Sam..." I whispered in shock. Then I turn and saw a flashlight next to me, I go to pick it up and try to send a message back. "C’mon... Where are you?" I asked but Sam's light disappears. "Crap." I muttered then I look over at Nate and go to shake him awake. "Nate...Nathan!" I said as I shake his shoulder. Finally, he starts to come to as his eyes flicker open. "Ugh....w-what? What happened?" He asked with a groan.
"C'mon, Nate. We gotta get to that...creepy mountain." I said pointing towards the cave opening. "Why?" He asked as he starts to sit up. "Because Sam's there. He just sent a message through Morse code on his flashlight." I said as I go and help Nate up to his feet. "Then what are we waiting for?" Nate asked. "Uh...for you and your lazy ass." I said and Nate gives me a fake laugh. "Very funny." He mutters a d we start to leave the cave. Just stay put, Sam...we're coming to you. I thought as we start to make our way towards the mountain.
We were getting closer as we got on top of a cliff when Nate and I looked out into the ocean and saw a boat heading towards the direction we were going. "Rafe." Nate mutters and I let out a sigh of annoyance. "Damn it. We gotta hurry." I said and Nate nods in agreement. Watch your back, Sam. I thought and Nate and I continued our way towards the mountain.
"Oh shit!" Nate exclaimed as we made it around the corner and heard gunshots. We duck down as we hear a couple of guys talking to each other. "Oi, oi! You got a target?" The first guy shouts. "Saw something, maybe... movement along the treeline." The second guy replied as Nate and I share a nervous glance then we start to make our way to the tall grass as carefully as we could.
"Well, that's thick jungle over there, hey. It's all moving. I don't see anything." The first guy said. "Damn it. All right, everyone, false alarm! But keep an eye out! Let's go." The second guy said to his crew as we saw more men with him. Nate and I start to make our way around the men as quietly as we could while also hearing their conversation.
"So which one of them did they spot?" One of them asked. "The older brother. He shot a couple of our men and run off." Another guy replied. "You think the twins are still alive?" The other guy asked. "Until we find their bodies, I'm going to go with yeah." His friend replied.
"How'd they survive that wreck?" The first guy asked. "They keep getting lucky." The second guy said. Damn right we keep getting lucky. I thought as Nate and I just got around them. "Well, luck eventually runs out." The first guy replied. "We'll see." The second guy said as we got out of their reach.
"Don't think they saw us." I whispered to Nate as we started to run once we were a few feet away from those mercenaries. "I don't think so either. So long, boys." Nate said and we started to run.
"Think we lost them." I said as we put some more distance between us and those mercenaries. "Yeah...thank God." Nate said and we start to climb up on this wall but it started to collapse. "Ah, you gotta be kidding me!" Nate exclaims as we climb up real quick. "Ah... Oh no." I shout as we got on top of a rock ledge that started to fall. "No! No, no!" Nate and I exclaimed and we jumped off of that rock and grabbed onto solid ledge. "Holy shit." Nate whispers as I let out a sigh of relief. "Almost had a heart attack." I said as Nate gets up onto the ledge then turns and helps me up.
"You alright?" He asked me. "Yeah, fine." I replied just as we heard a noise behind us. Both Nate and I turned around, aiming our guns, only to be greeted by Sam, who was also holding his gun. Nate and I sigh with relief as we lower our guns and Sam said. "I nearly shot your heads off."
"Sam... You're okay." Nate said, relieved, as he and I put our guns away. "Yeah. Nothing I can't walk away from." Sam said as he puts his gun away too. "It's good to see you two are alive. C’mon. We got a treasure to find." Sam said as Nate and I sit down on a large boulder.
"Hold up, man, I mean— What are we doing?" Nate asked him. "What do you mean?" Sam asked, confused. "Our supplies are at the bottom of the Indian Ocean." I informed him. "Okay, so we go steal some from Nadine's army." Sam said, like this was no problem.
"Yeah, and there's that... We're going up against an army!" Nate exclaims. "We've been holding our own so far." Sam said. "While being marooned in the middle of nowhere." I remarked. "We were trying to get here, remember?" Sam said. "When we had an escape plan. Okay. Just hear me out— crazy suggestion... let's go down there and at least secure one of Rafe's boats?" Nate suggests.
"The boats can wait. You want to know what we're doing here? We are buying my life back. Okay. And we're doing that by stepping into that jungle and finding Libertalia." Sam said to us, firmly, and I stand up on my feet and walk towards Sam. "Have you even seen any signs of a massive pirate colony? 'Cause I sure as hell haven't. And Nate hasn't either!" I exclaimed. "You're a little late to start developing doubts, don'tcha think?" Sam asked.
"Look— can we at least acknowledge the chance that maybe Avery's idea for a secret pirate utopia didn't pan out? And maybe we're just swept up in this fantasy, when instead we should be looking for a real way to save you?" Nate asked Sam as he also stands up and stands next to me while Sam scoffs at this. "I'm gonna scour this island inch by inch if I have to— until I find that treasure. Now, if both of you are confused about what you're doing here... then you two can go home." Sam said and he starts to walk away but glared at my older brother and grabbed his shoulder.
"Wait, wait, wait. Nate and I can go home? Are you kidding me?" I asked him, angrily, as he stops and turns to me. "Do you have any idea what Nate and I put on the line to get you here?" I asked, angrily. "How about what I put on the line? Okay? The last fifteen years of my life—" Sam said.
"Oh, C'mon. This has nothing to do with that!" Nate yells at him. "It is everything to do with that." Sam said as we glare at him for a moment until Nate looks over Sam's shoulder at something. "What?" I asked him and he starts to walk over to a wall, covered in vines and branches, and pulls them back. "Holy crap." He said as he wipes off the branches and dirt, revealing Avery’s sigil.
"Oh my God." I whispered as we stared at it. "You guys still wanna go home?" Sam asked us. "Let's just see what else we can find." Nate said and we start to make our way deeper into the jungle.
"This way." Sam said and we see another sigil. "I'll be damned." Nate exclaims. "Off to a good start." Sam said. "Yeah. Let's just hope the rest of it isn't buried under centuries of dirt and rock." I remarked. "Glass half full, if you please." Sam said to me and we start to walk deeper into the jungle and make our way through a decrepit building.
"You guys are gonna wanna see this." Sam said after Nate pushed a crate down for us to climb up to a large opening. "Coming." I said as I climb up then Nate follows and we see a large abandoned city, that looked like it had been there for hundreds of years. "Whoa." Nate and I muttered. "What do you see?" Sam asked us. "No houses. Wide street. Clearly a commercial district of some kind." Nate replied and I chuckled.
"Yes... thank you for that, Nathan. C'mon. What do you see?" Sam asked. "You just wanna hear us say it, don't you?" I asked him. "Really want to hear both of you say it." Sam replied and Nate and I chuckle and roll our eyes. "All right." I muttered then Nate and I gesture towards the city and said, in unison. "Libertalia."
"Libertalia!" Sam laughs. "The long-lost, legendary pirate utopia. Discovered, after three hundred years, by one Samuel Drake." Sam gloats. "And..." Nate and I said as we fold our arms across our chests, looking at him.
"And... and his younger slightly less charming twin siblings who happened to be tagging along for the ride." Sam said and I rolled my eyes and shake my head at this as Sam comes up to us and places his arms around mine and Nare's shoulder. "You know, I always knew you two'd make something of yourselves one day." He said.
"Yeah, just so you know, it's not mine and (y/n)'s first lost city." Nate replied. "Shhh. Shh. Just... Enjoy the moment." Sam said to us and I chuckled and we stare at the city for a few moments.
"So where do you guys want to start?" Sam asked us. "How about that building right over there." I said as I point at the large tower in the distance. "Oh, you mean the one with the massive guard tower?" Sam asked and I nodded. "Yeah. I say we go see what it was guarding." I said and Sam pats our shoulders. "Works for me." He said and we start to enter Libertalia.
