Chapter 9: Historical Research
Yemen, Arabian Peninsula
"Elena Fisher and Cole Stantz, Foreign Correspondents." Sully said as he, Nate and I board off of our plane and walk on the runway of the airport. Elena and Cole laugh as they walk up to us. "Hey, Sully." Elena and Cole greet at the same time. "How ya doin', you two?" Sully said as he and Cole shake hands then he goes over to hug Elena but she stops him.
"Uh, No, sorry, that's sorta frowned upon here." She said. "Oh, right." Sully said as he backs away from her. "Well then here! Bring it in, Elena." I said and we hug each other while Nate and Cole shake hands then give a quick bro hug to each other.
"You guys can hold hands though." Elena said as she points between the boys. Nate laughs at this then turns to Elena. "How are you, Elena?" He asked. "Good, thanks." She replied. "You, uh, you look great." Nate said and she sighs, looks down for a moment then looks back up to the rest of us. "So, against my better judgment...." she said and holds up three permits. "These permits will get you through most checkpoints." She said as she hands them to us.
"Okay, great." I said as I look at my permit. "Oh, and Elena and I shouldn't be worried about what's in those bags, right?" Cole asked us. "Course not." Sully laughs. "No." Nate said. "Yeah. Not yet, anyway." I said as we start to walk and I see Nate reaching out and grabbing Sully's hand and holds it for a few seconds before Sully pulls his hand out of Nate's.
Cole and I chuckle at this as we come up to the door of the airport and Elena turns to us. "All right, remember--you're journalists now. So try and act respectable." She said and we nod at her. "Think you two can handle that?" Nate asked Sully and I. "I think she's talking to you, bro." I said and Sully laughs as we enter the airport.
"So what exactly are you three reprobates up to?" Elena asked us. "Just a little historical research." Nate replied. "Right. So that explains the big rush." Elena said. "Exactly." Nate states. "No cursed treasures?" Elena asked him. "Nope." Nate replied. "No diabolical warlords?" She asked him. "No." Nate said and Elena laughs.
"You are the worst liar." She said. "What?" He asked. "You are. Besides Cole's told me alittle bit of what (y/n)'s told him." Elena said. "We're not going to start this are we?" Nate asked just as Sully said. "Excuse me. The car, where is it?"
"It's over there." Cole said as he points towards the car which was just down the road. "I'll just take the bags and meet you." Sully said as he takes his, mine and Nate's bag and heads over to the car.
"Guys--" Elena started to say to us when Nate points at her finger. "You're still wearing it." He said and she looks down at her left hand and looks down at the silver band on her ring finger. "Yeah, I am. It helps in this part of the world." Elena said. "Oh, really." Nate said, smirking at her. "Seriously, don't flatter yourself." Elena said to him.
"Speaking of rings, I see you're still wearing yours." Elena said to me as she points out the ring around my neck. "What? Oh, oh, yeah." I said, confused for a moment of what she was talking about. She looks at me for a moment then her eyes widen and her jaw drops. "That's what this is all about, isn't it?" Elena asked as she looks between me and Nate. "You don't understand. We finally proved it. Drake lied about his route through the East Indies. Four hundred years ago, he came here." Nate said to her.
"Why, Nate?" Elena asked him. "That's what we're here to find out." I said to her. "No, she means, why this obsession?" Cole said to me and I look over at him. "Exactly. I'm- I'm just worried-" Elena said and Nate rolls his eyes. "(Y/n) and I can take care of ourselves, all right?" Nate replied.
"I'm not talking about you or your sister." Elena said and Nate and I give her confused looks then she nods towards Sully. We look over at him then back at her and Cole. "What, Sully?" We said, confused. "He would go to the ends of the earth for you two. Just - don't ask him to." Elena said and Cole nods as she goes over to the car. "C'mon, that's not fair." Nate said as he chases after her.
"What is that even supposed to mean?" I asked Cole and he gives me a concern look. "Think about it, cowgirl." He said and he starts to walk away and I think over what they were saying. No, it can't be. I thought then I quickly turn my head. "Cole!" I said and he stops and turns to me as I walk up to him.
"Just so you'd know...I'd rather die than let anything happen to Sully or Elena or my brother or you, especially. You guys are all I have left. I care about you guys too much. I would do anything to protect you guys." I said and Cole smirks. "I know." He whispered and we smiled at each other before we head towards the car and climb in the back with Nate as Sully takes the passenger seat and Elena takes the driver's seat.
"If you could just drop us at the edge of the city, that would be great." Sully said to Elena. "Not a chance--you three are mine and Cole's responsibility now. We're not taking our eyes off of you." Elena said as she smiles at us. Cole looks over at me and smirks and winks at me. I giggle as Elena starts the car and drives off.
"If you're trying to pick up Francis Drake's trail, we should head to the old quarter." Cole informed us as we enter the city. "Ahh, so this is the new part?" Sully asked. "Well, it's all relative. The city was founded at least three thousand years ago." Elena replied. "All right---well, lead on." Nate said and Elena and Cole walk ahead of us.
"All right. There--you see that tower up ahead?" Cole asked as he points towards an old decrypted tower in the distance. "That's where the old city starts. So, we need to make our way over there." Cole said as we walk down some steps and head towards a gate and enter through it.
"All right. We need you to be on your best behavior." Elena said to us. "Yes, ma'am." Sully said and I nod. "I'm serious. The police have patrols everywhere, and we don't need to arouse any suspicions." Elena said. "You got it." Nate and I said, in unison as we come upon a market.
"We're just gonna a cut through the market." Cole said and we walk through the market as people talk and laugh amongst each other. We make it towards this archway when we see what looks like a barricade blocking it and some officers standing on guard. "Huh. Okay, it looks like they've got the street blocked off. Elena and I will see what we can do. You three just stay here." Cole said and he and Elena go over to the officers and talk to them.
"Hey..." Sully said as he pats Nate's shoulder. "She's still wearing it." He whispers. "Oh yeah, apparently it helps in this part of the world." Nate replied. "What does that mean?" Sully asked. "Pssh...I don't know." Nate grumbles as Cole and Elena walk back over to us. "So?" I asked them. "All right, it's no good. They're not letting anybody go through." Elena said then she points towards the side. "Let's try over here. I know another way around." And we backtrack a bit and walk through another part of the market until we come upon a gated door.
Sully walks up to it and goes to open it but it doesn't move. "Damn it, this thing's locked." Sully said and Elena goes over to a nearby merchant and speaks to him in Arabic. The man nods and unlocks the gate for us. "Thanks, pal." Sully said and we start to go through. "Good thing we've got you with us." Nate said to Elena, who smiles. "Yeah, no kidding." She said as we head up the stairs and through another part of the city when we see more cops blocking another entrance.
"More cops." I said, slightly annoyed. "Yeah, looks like we're not getting through here, either." Cole said. "Gonna have to find another way around." Sully said. "Hey, up here." Nate said as he starts to climb up a ladder that was on the side of a building. We climb up the ladder then up to a balcony of a different building and enter to what looked like a hotel.
"Guys, I don't think we should be in here." Cole said, worriedly. "Oh c'mon, we'll just cut through. It'll be fine. Just don't break anything." Nate assured and we make our way through a hallway then up some stairs that leads us to the roof.
"Wow." I whispered in awe as we get to the roof and see the whole city of Yemen. "Okay. See--down there. Those buildings would've been hundreds of years old even when Francis Drake was alive." Elena said as she points out the building we were going to. "Right. Good thinking." I said.
"Hey, Nate! (Y/n)!" Sully said and he points down below us and we see a familiar man walking around the street. "Talbot." Sully growls. "Who?" Cole and Elena asked. "He's got Cutter's notebook." Nate pointed out as we see Talbot reading the book. "What?" Elena and Cole asked. "Wait, Charlie Cutter?" Elena asked. "No time. Sully can explain everything." Nate said as he and I start to run.
"Hey, wait a minute--" Sully said.
"Meet you down there." I said and we jump down to a lower roof and start to follow Talbot around town until he enters a building. We follow him inside but then he pops out of nowhere and punches Nate. "Nathan!" I said then Talbot punches me as well. "Just couldn't leave it alone, could you? C'mere." He said and he grabs me and throws me out of the window then throws Nate out and we land out on the alley.
"Not a complete loss." Nate mutters as he pulls out the notebook and I smiled. "Nice one, bro." I said then we heard a voice say. "Get them!" We look up and see a few suited men coming towards us. "Hiya boys." We greeted as we get up and start to fight them.
"Nate! (Y/n)!" Elena calls out and we see her, Sully and Cole standing at the end of the area. "Kids, come on!" Sully said. "Hurry! Down here!" Cole said and we took out the last men and chased after them.
"Hey--through here!" Elena said as she points at a wooden door and all of us enter through it. Sully closes the door but leaves it open a crack to keep an eye out. "Is somebody gonna fill us in here?" Cole asked as Nate pulls out Cutter's notebook. "Who were those guys, and what does Charlie have to do with all this?" Elena asked us, angrily.
"He was working with us on this one." Nate replied. "Wait, was? He's not--dead?" Elena asked, with concern but I shake my head. "No, no. Him and Chloe." I replied. "Chloe too?" Elena asked. "Yeah, but they both bowed out when Cutter broke his leg." Sully replied.
"He broke his leg?" Cole said, confused. "He's lucky he didn't break his neck, a fall like that." I said. "He's fine." Nate assures Elena and Cole. "'Course between that and burning to death, I think I would've jumped too." Sully said and I sighed at this. "Not helping." I remarked.
"All right--just tell us--what you guys are really looking for." Elena said and Nate points at this large well and said. "Uh...this. C'mere. Sully, check this out." And we gather towards the well. "I think we lost 'em. Whaddya got?" Sully said as he walks over to us and Nate sets the notebook down. "Looks like we stumbled right into our secret entrance." Nate replied and Sully chuckles. "Well, in not going down there without some hardware." He said.
"Go talk to the rug merchant we just passed." Cole said. "No--guns. Weapons." Sully said and Cole smirks a bit. "He's not really a rug merchant." He said. "Oh right." Sully said and he head towards the doors. "Hey--just watch yourself out there, okay?" Nate said and Sully nods. "Yeah." He said then he walks out the door.
Immediately, after he shuts the door, Elena and Nate start to argue.
"All right, what is all this crap you're giving us about Sully?"
"Seriously, Nate, why don't you just come clean with me? Those guys are not here for historical research, and neither are you and (y/n)."
"It's about Marlowe." I replied and then I dig into my bag and pull out the decoder. "Look at this. We finally got it. And it's just like we said." I said as Elena takes the decoder and her and Cole look at it. "That---led to this." Nate said as he pulls out the map and shows it to them. "And this--led us here." I said as I point towards the well. "To a hole in the ground." Elena said and we chuckled. "Well, it's a glamorous life." I joked.
"C'mon, admit it-- you two love all this as much as we do." Nate said as he looks at Elena and Cole. "No. No, not anymore." Elena said as Cole said, shrugging. "Kinda sorta. Not really." Then Elena hands me the decoder back and glances over at Cole. "Really? Okay, well, why don't you just walk away." Nate said as he folds his arms and stares at Elena and Cole, but I think that was more towards Elena than Cole.
"Me? Me walk away." Elena exclaims and she laughs. "That's funny." She said just as Sully walks in, carrying shotguns. "Shotguns?" I asked. "Why not?" He said and he hands one shotgun to Elena and another one to Cole then holds onto the last one he had.
"What the--" Nate and I said to him. "What? He only had three." Sully said and Nate sighs at this. "All right, give me a hand with this." Nate said and we go over to the well and all five of us push the grate off. I go and grab the map and the notebook and put them in my bag for safe keeping.
"Well, well, well--" Sully said and Nate and I giggle. "That's cute." I said and Elena looks over at me. "What?" She asked. "Because it's a well." I said, gesturing over to the well. "Shall we?" Sully asked and we nod. "Okay, guys. Secret entrance to what? What's down there?" Cole asked. "Only one way to find out." Nate said as he starts to go over to the side and climb down the ladder. "Another non-answer." Elena mutters as I head down the ladder as well. "You expected something different?" Sully asked her.
