Chapter 5: The Chateau

"Chateau should be this way." Nate said after we pull up to a long dirt road and get out of our jeep. "Not too far." I said after Sully let's out a heavy sigh. "Not too far? With you two, I never know if that means a quarter mile or twenty. Like that time you got us lost in Peru." Sully said as we walk down the road.

"Oh! You really want to bring up Peru?" Nate asked him and Sully chuckles. "You're not still holding that over me?" He asked. "We were fifteen, Sully. Should've known when we met you, we would be in prison within a year." I said to him. "You and your brother were headed that way all on your own, if you two recall..." Sully said and Nate and I chuckle a bit at this. "Besides, I got you two out, didn't I? I always get you two out." He said and we just laugh and roll our eyes.

"There it is. Just like in Lawrence's notes." Nate pointed out as we come upon a large castle like building, that looked like it could fall apart any minute. "Gotta have more faith in us, Sully." I said as we walk ahead only to come upon a ravine. "Course, we don't remember this ravine being on the map." Nate said as we look down. "Ah, that must've just put that in." Sully joked. "All right. C'mon, we'll find another way around." Nate said and we turn and take a path on the left.

"This way. Watch your step." Nate warned us as he climbs up on a ledge, steps on it, leans up against it and shimmys across it, Sully and I follow soon after. "Oohh. I don't know, kids. You two sure we're in the right place? This doesn't seem old enough to be a Crusader castle. Looks more like...Renaissance to me." Sully said as we come upon an opening of a cavern and walk through it.

"You haven't been reading our books again, have you, Sully?" I asked him and he chuckles. "No, Lawrence said the original castle was built in the 11th century. The rest was added on later." I said as we come upon a cliff with a long, narrow tree trunk, acting as a bridge. "Ah, this looks sketchy." Nate said as we, carefully, make our way across the trunk.

It did crack under mine and Nate's weight but we made it across just fine. I turned around and see Sully just standing at the other end, looking at the tree trunk. "What are you waiting for? We lossened it up for ya." I joked. "Yeah, that's the problem." He said but he crosses it without a problem.

"Look, Sully your first car!" Nate joked as we come upon a broken down car. "Oh, man, that's a 1927 Auburn." Sully said, astonished. And we walk down to some staues. "Yeah. What's this, Mr. Wizard?" Nate asked. "Lawn art." Sully replied and I laugh. "Pretty tacky." I remarked and Sully laughs as we walk past the statue and head up towards the building.

"The knight who owned this castle, Lord Godfrey, returned from the Crusades in the twelfth century. According to Lawrence, all that's left of the original castle is the square keep in the gardens. If Godfrey brought any secrets back from Arabia that's where we're gonna find them." I said as we past the gate and towards the front door.

"Let's try this door...." Sully said and he goes to open it but it doesn't budge. "No good?" Nate asked. "Not getting in this way." Sully said as Nate and I look around. "I bet I can climb up through that hole." Nate said as he points towards a tower with a massive hole in the middle. "I bet you can." Sully mutters.
"You need me to come?" I asked him. "Nah, I got this. Just make sure Sully doesn't burn the place down." Nate said just as Sully pulls out a cigar. "What?!" Sully asked us, shrugging, and I chuckle. "I'll try." I said and Nate runs over to the side of the castle and begins to climb up.

"What about that window above you?" Sully asked just as Nate shimmys past a window. "Eh, I don't want to cut my hand." He replied and he passes the window and up into the hole. "Nice one, Nate." I called out. "Be right back." He called out. "We'll be here waiting." Sully replied back to him and we stand there and wait for Nate.

"I've been meaning to ask you, how are you and Cole doing? He better be treating you well!" Sully said and I chuckle. "We're doing good and yes, he's been good. You don't have to go protective mode on me, Nate's already got that covered." I replied. I remember when Cole and I first started dating, Nate told Cole that he's seen what Nate can do, so he told Cole to watch it and Cole promised he would be good.

Sully laughs and said. "Yeah...of course he would! But I can't say I blame him. Not after what happened to..." Sully started to say until we heard a crash inside the building.
"Sounds like he made it in." Sully said and we run over to one side of the building to a window and see Nate standing up. "Hey, Nate! Over here! It's chained up." I said as I gesture towards the window with chain. "All right, back up! I'm gonna shoot the lock." Nate said. "Let's hope that's the only thing you shoot." Sully jokes. "I said Lock!" Nate said and he shoots lock off and Sully and I jump in.

"You guys good?" Nate asked and we nod at him. "Okay. We gotta make our way through the chateau to the gardens. That's where we'll find the old keep." Nate said and we start to look around. "Oh, man, look at this place." I whispered as we come up to a door with a beem blocking it.

Sully, Nate and I were able to move the beam out of the way and got the door open.
"Is that a popcorn machine?" Nate asked once we get through the door. "I don't know. Look like one." I said and we walk past it and head down some stairs. "Come on, let's see if we can find a way to that tower." I said as we make it to the old kitchen area of the castle then we climb on some stoves and up into the floor above us into a different room.

Then we make our way to a room where there was a grand staircase. We walk up the stairs and look around just as Sully walks up to a window. "Hey kids! Square tower....looks pretty old." He said as he points at the tower. "Yeah. That matches the one in Lawrence's notebook. That must be it! Nice!" Nate said as we pat Sully on the back. "Thanks." He said and we start to make our way to that tower.

After finding a secret passage behind a fireplace (typical!), Nate and Sully start to push the fireplace open. But suddenly, Nate falls through. "Nathan!" I exclaimed as I run in, only to fall in after him. I land on my back with a groan and Nate gets up and goes over to me. "Kids! You two okay?" Sully asked from above. "You all right?" Nate asked me as he helps me up. I nod at him, even though my back was killing me, as Nate said. "We're fine." Then we look around to see we were in some cavern.

"There's no way we're getting back up there. We're gonna head this way. Just meet us on the other side." Nate said to Sully. "You got it. You two be careful down there." Sully said. "Careful is our middle name." I said, sarcastically, and I hear Sully chuckle. "Yeah...right." he said as Nate and I smile and we make our way out.

As we walk down into this passage, we kept hearing this weird hissing noise every few seconds. "The hell is that noise?" Nate asked just as we hear it again. "I swear to God, Nate, if it's a snake...fair warning, I will become trigger happy!" I said. "You still traumatized from that trip to the zoo when we were kids?" Nate asked me. "Hey, that freaking thing was huge! It also didn't help that it lunged at the glass right as I passed it!" I said and Nate started to laugh.

"Yeah, I remember. You jumped and latched onto me as it happened and began to cry." He said then we come up to a very narrow path. "I think we can squeeze through here." He said and we slowly make our way through it just as more hissing noises sounded out. And in that moment I felt something on my head, I let out a yelp, jumped and both Nate and I fall down into the water.

"Ugh, so not snakes, just some weird bugs. Not as bad but still bad." I said as we stand up. "Yeah...come on." He said and we start to swim underwater for a few moments then make it to the other side of the cavern. "Hey look, light!" I said as I point up at a beam of sunshine above us. "That's a good sign." Nate said and we start to climb up the walls.

We climb all the way up, which lead us out of a well, until we looked up and saw some trucks and men cone towards the castle. "Oh, crap." We muttered and both of us raise our head and we see Talbot walking towards the castle with some guards. "They're here somewhere. Hunt them down." He ordered and he goes inside the castle.

"Nate, we've got to warn Sully!" I whispered. "I know." He said as he reaches over and grabs the man in front of us and pulls him down the well. Both of us climb out of the well, find some guns nearby and opened fire on Talbot's men. "Jeez, they brought a small army with 'em." Nate mutters to me as we fire and duck in cover. Then I find a crate full of grenades. "Oh thanks for the gift, boys." I said and I grabbed the grenade and throw it among the men.

Nate and I fight our way around the chateau until we find Sully in the backyard shooting at some men. "Sorry we're late!" Nate yells at him as we shoot at the men Sully couldn't get to. "Thanks for showing up!" Sully said. "Looks like Marlowe brought a damn army!" I yelled. "Yeah...I think the bus just got here!" Sully said as we shoot at some more men.

Nate and I make our way over to Sully then the three of us make our way through a door and into an area with a collapsed floor. We jumped down when I saw a rotten body nearby. "Boys, check this out." I said as they come up to me. "What the hell? It's one of Talbot's men." Nate said a she points out the suit. "Was." Sully mutters. "But...that's impossible, they just got here." I said, confused. "Yeah, but what could've happened to him?" Nate asked.

"I have no idea, but I sure as hell don't like it." Sully said as we go down to a Trap door and make our way into a dark room. "Hey, Sully! Can you give us some light?" I asked him and he goes to flick his lighter and puts it on a torchlight.

Then the light from the fire reveals a lab room of sorts. "Looks like some sore of laboratory, doesn't it?" Sully asked. "Yeah. This stuff's got to be at least 400 years old." I said as we head into another room and Sully lights some more torches for us.

"Hm. Seems to be an alchemist lab." Nate said as he points out the shelves full of bottles and vials. "Wait a minute...does this place remind you guys of anything?" I asked. "Yeah, Marlowe's creepy hideout, now that you mention it." Sully said as Nate nodded. "This was John Dee's lab." Nate said. "Exactly!" I said. "All the way out here? In France?" Sully asked. "Well, he must've traced the clues back to the Crusades, just like Lawrence did." Nate said as I walk over to the table.

"Hey, look at this." I said as I point at the table. "Huh, Sabaean script. But what are these symbols?" Nate asked. "Looks like he was trying to work something out. There's some sort of message written here in Enochian script." I said. "Think you guys can decipher it?" Sully asked us. "We'll try." Nate said as he pulls out the cipher disk out and I hand him the ring.

"The altar guards the entrance...to the underworld." He deciphered. "Huh. Well, he did use magic to conjure spirits." Nate said as he hands the ring back to me and the disc away. "Yeah. Or the altar could be hiding a secret passage." Sully said. "Oh, right." Nate mutters and I snorted at this. "Help me push." Sully asked and the three of us push the table back, revealing a secret passage. "Well, would you look at that?" Sully said, slyly.

"Crafty old bastard." Nate said.

"Why thank you!" Sully said, proudly.

"Not you--John Dee." Nate said.

"Oh." Sully said.

"Well, you're crafty too!" I said to him.

"And old." He added and I chuckle as we jump down into the secret passage. "Oh, here we go. Sully gives us a light!" Nate said and Sully lights up Nates torch. "Much better." He said. "Y'know, one of these days you two are really going to have to start carrying your own matches." Sully said. "What are you talking about?" I asked him but he doesn't answer and we start to make our way deeper into the passageway.

Eventually we found the grave of Lord Godfrey and the three of us walk up to his tomb. "This is it." Nate said the he turns to me. "Here hold this, will ya?" He asked as he holds out the torch to me. I take it and he pushes the lid off of the tomb and we see the skeleton of Godfrey holding an item. "Look, it's some sort of amulet." Nate said as he picks it up. "Something written here." He mutters and dusted it off then set the amulet and his journal on top of the tomb.

"Gonna do this right on top of Lancelot, huh?" I joked. "Uh-huh." Nate replied as he looks over his book and I just lightly scoff and shake my head. "It's in Sabaean script!" Nate exclaims. "Well  That would be from Ancient Yemen, all right." Sully said. "Yeah, exactly where Francis Drake would've landed back in the 16th century." Nate said. "Could be the name of a city?" I suggested.

"Yeah, from 3,000 years ago. Without the rest of that inscription, we still don't know where to look." Sully said. "Well, let's hope the other half is in Syria." Nate said. "Yea, and that Cutter and Chloe can find it." I said and we start to make our way out of ths tomb.
