The beginning.
"Thank you, ma'am, for your help. I'm deeply sorry for your loss."
"Thank you, Officer."
The door closed behind the cop, leaving the room in silence. The entire family was in shock, but the impact of Rose's sudden death was hardest on Emily.
Rose had never really opened up to her parents—they were always too busy to listen. Instead, she confided in Emily. Being the same age, they were more like best friends. But Emily's pain went beyond that. She had heard everything, including the gunshot. From so far away, she had felt powerless, unable to intervene in time.
Rose had shared everything about Jack. Emily had urged her to end the relationship, pleaded with her. Yet Rose remained convinced she could change him. Was it wrong to let her try? Absolutely. Does it weigh heavily? Without a doubt.
The alibi Jack presented for the night of Rose's death made no sense. There was no way he should have escaped suspicion. The situation with the police and Jack was falling apart.
There was no way to share what Emily knew with the authorities. Without proof, all that could be achieved was Jack going to jail, and that wasn't enough. Revenge was necessary. An eye for an eye.
Jack Miller, the time is coming. And he won't see it coming.
