ANNABETH CHASE
9-2-20
I woke up Wednesday morning to an empty bed, which momentarily shocked me until I remembered how my life had changed within the past few days. I was in California, in an all-girls dorm at OAAA. It was a given that Percy wasn't beside me in bed.
I pulled my comforter up to my chin and shut my eyes again, hoping to gain a few more hours of precious sleep, but my mind was already running.
When Percy and I first started dating, it took us quite a bit to get used to the whole girlfriend/boyfriend thing. It was thrilling and nervewracking at the same time. We started slowly, by integrating more hugs and hand-holding into the equation. Then we switched to kissing. On the hand, on the cheek, on the neck, anywhere our lips could reach. Whenever Percy kissed the top of my head, my knees would go weak, and if I'm being honest, they still do.
The third step in our relationship was going to bed together. Although we had had a few sleepovers in our time, rarely did we ever set out to sleep in the same bed. The first time we genuinely planned to sleep in the same bed (besides the first day we got together because - let's face it - that was the honeymoon stage and we had no clue what was going on) was pretty awkward. But, gradually, we got used to the process of getting ready for bed and falling asleep to the sound of each other's breaths. In fact, some nights when I was at my own home, I could barely get to bed because I had nobody to cuddle with.
I sighed, smiling lightly. Percy, although he was joking, was right the day before; I was a very lucky girl. Not only had I found the love of my life at sixteen years old, but I had also met him back when I was twelve, he was sweet, funny, smart, and very attractive. Could there ever be a better guy?
I rolled over to the other side of my bed and saw Reyna, my roommate, sitting up on her own bed and typing on her phone.
"Morning," I mumbled.
She quirked up an eyebrow. "Good morning."
I held back a laugh at her properness. I was a serious person, and I knew that, but I couldn't comprehend someone being that formal in the morning.
"Do you have any plans today?" I asked her.
Reyna paused, before shaking her head. "No, you?"
"No, I'm free. How would you feel about grabbing breakfast at a diner or something?"
She hesitated. "I guess it wouldn't do any harm to get to know each other."
I smiled. "Great, how about we leave in half an hour?"

Approximately forty minutes later, Reyna and I found ourselves sitting at a booth in Hestia's Hearth, the small diner Percy and I had found a couple of days prior.
I smiled when I noticed a familiar petite, frizzy-haired waitress heading our way, two menus in hand. "Good morning, Hazel," I greeted her happily.
Something about the innocence and sweetness of the young girl gave me joy. I hardly knew her, but I wanted to take her under my wing and protect her from all the harm that the world had to offer.
She grinned at me, setting down the menus in front of us. "Morning, ladies. No boyfriends today?"
I shook my head. "No, I'm letting him sleep in, so it's just me and Reyna."
Reyna rolled her eyes playfully - I think. "Oh, so I was your second choice, Annabeth. How lovely," she teased.
I laughed a bit. "Right? It's pretty great."
Hazel giggled. "Could I start you two off with anything to drink?"
"Can I have coffee?" I asked her.
Our small waitress nodded before looking to Reyna. "And you?"
"I'll take water."
Hazel scribbled in her notepad before smiling at us. "Alright, I'll have those ready soon."
The second she left, we settled into a slightly awkward silence. Reyna's eyes wandered around the room, and I scanned her face for emotion. She had chocolate brown hair pulled away from her face in a French braid. Her deep brown eyes were cold and harsh, and the fact that they were narrowed in concentration didn't help. She had dark, structured brows, a straight nose, and her lips were pressed together firmly. Reyna was the definition of a fierce female, and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't intimidated.
As if she felt my gaze, Reyna's eyes snapped to meet mine. "Yes?" she asked.
"I was wondering if you were happy with the place I chose," I replied immediately, only partially lying. I did want to know if she was happy, but not just about the place. I wanted to know if she enjoyed spending time with me, but I guess only time would tell.
She shrugged. "So far it seems nice. Nice waitress, nice decor, nice atmosphere. But I refuse to judge a restaurant before trying their food."
I breathed out a laugh. "Smart." I paused to scan the menu, before asking, "Anything catching your eye?"
Reyna bit her lip. "I'm a sucker for breakfast burritos, so I think I'll have the one with veggies, egg, and cheese. You?"
"Maybe the big breakfast: scrambled eggs with toast, bacon, and home fries."
Reyna smiled. "Can't ever go wrong with bacon."
I laughed. "Debatable."
"Do tell."
"For my eighteenth birthday, back in July, Percy tried to make me breakfast, and normally he's a great chef - don't get me wrong - but they had just gotten a new stove and he hadn't quite worked it out yet. Long story short, he set the fire alarm off and we ate breakfast out at a restaurant."
Reyna chuckled. "Sounds like something he would do, not going to lie."
I smiled softly. "Yeah, he isn't always the brightest, but he's a sweetheart, really. Besides, I would say he's more oblivious than anything else."
She rolled her eyes. "You aren't kidding. I'm not going to say I had a crush on him, because at that point it was purely physical attraction, but he barely noticed anything I said to him. I'm pretty sure the only thing he heard was 'Yeah, I can make it blue.'"
I laughed. "Sounds about right. All through high school, girls were practically kissing his feet, and he only noticed when I told him about it near the end of senior year."
"It's because he only noticed you. You do realize that, right?"
I blushed. "Yeah, I know that now, but before we started dating I was sure that he was just unaware of the female species."
"Here's your drinks, girls. Have you decided on what you want?" Hazel asked sweetly.
I nodded. "Can I get the big breakfast, please?"
"Sure, bacon or sausage?"
"Bacon," I chose.
"Alright, and you, Reyna?"
"I'll have the veggie breakfast burrito," she answered.
Hazel took our menus and whisked off to the kitchen to relay our orders.
"So," I began, "any guys in your life?"
Reyna scowled. "No."
I frowned. "Want to expand on that, or..."
She shrugged. "Both of the guys I've ever laid my eyes on had their eyes on someone else. It's not the end of the world, but it does suck."
I pursed my lips. "Maybe you haven't been looking in the right places. We should go out tonight. There have to be a few college parties we could crash."
Reyna raised her eyebrows. "I didn't take you for a party girl, Annabeth."
I sucked in a breath. "I'm not, but I want to be friends with you, and this would be a great bonding opportunity, so why not?"
She smiled. "That's really nice of you Annabeth. Thank you."
I smiled, albeit forcedly. "Of course."
I was going to a college party. Oh, joy.
