Chapter 4
Sparkfang cocked his head, his eyes filled with terror.
"Who's there?" He shouted, looking down at Nightclaw, who was still lying, her paws tucked under her belly, staring into nothingness. "What did you do to her? Who's the prophecied one?!" The voice chuckled. "Where's my clan?!"
"You are not the prophecied one, but her." Growled the voice. A clammy gray hand stretched out of the warrior den and pointed at Nightclaw with a claw. Jolteon shivered, even though it wasn't cold. Umbreon was now pale, and cold to the touch.
"What did you do to her?" He repeated, his voice a snarl.
"Easy, I waited until the trainer weakened her, and used hypnosis. She's in a trance." Jolteon narrowed his eyes.
"Show yourself." He growled.
"No need." The voice responded, "I'll just tell you. I'm a gengar. My name is soul eater." Jolteon shivered again. "And I'm going to do that, eat her soul" jolteon jumped, and saw white fangs flash in a smile from the shadowed warrior den. He looked around and realized that a mist had surrounded him. Looking down, he realized that Nightclaw was gone.
He started running blindly through the fog. He tripped on something and tumbled, landed in the dust a tail length away. He spat out blood and looked at what he tripped over. His heart went cold with fear. It was a flareon. Not one he knew particularly well, but a good warrior. His eyes were just pupiless pools of yellow.
"Ember foot" mumbled sparkfang, numb with fear for his mate, and the rest of the clan. More laughing broke out to his left. The jolteon shot lighting out, penetrating the mist, but the laughing was behind him now. It surrounding him, laughing as if from a hundred voices. Sparkfang howled, covering his ears with his paws. He shot thunderbolts everywhere, but the laughing was always in a different place. Something lashed out of the dark mist and slammed into the back of his head. Sparkfang fell forward with a cry, and everything was black.

Nightclaw could feel the cold claws of the gengar's hypnosis move squeezing her brain. She fought it, trying to force it back. She could sense Sparkfang by her side. He was saying something. She couldn't see or hear him though. She struggled against the move as hard as she could. Her vision was clouded by a white blue mist, making everything blurry. Her body trying to heal the wound on her side exhausted her, she knew the gengar knew this though, it made her weaker. She gave one last push against the move, and then it took over, leaving her mind blank and her vision black.
Nightclaw internally gasped when the blankness was realesed from her mind, she could think again! It was like she had started breathing again, wait, had she been breathing? She blinked open her eyes. The gengar was staring down at her. She screeched, but he slammed her with his paw, sending her flying across the cave. It was the warriors den! She slammed into the wall. The gengar strode over to her.
"You are the prophecied one." He growled, picking her up with one paw. "And I can't let you fulfill it." He opened his mouth and sucked in. Nightclaw felt a searing pain like her fur was being ripped off. ^it isn't^ she thought, ^my soul is...^ she felt suddenly free, soulless. She faintly heard the gengar laughing, satisfied. The umbreon suddenly shreiked, a loud howl. The gengar dropped her in surprise. Staggering to her feet, umbreon used last resort. It punched through gengar, leaving a gaping hole through his body. The Pokemon screamed, then exploded in a puff of purple mist. Nightclaw staggered, and collapsed on the ground. sparkfang hadn't noticed her swollen belly, but she was pregnant with his kits. Lying there, alone, in the warrior den, Nightclaw birthed her kits. Her energy expended soulless body was done then, and Nightclaw was no more.

Sparkfang was dreaming, no, having a vision. The gengar ate nightclaws soul, but she ended him, realesing all of the captive souls of his clan mates. Collapsed, and gave birth to three eevees. She died then, soulless and alone. The vision stretched to ember foot, his pupils slowly came back. His eyes focused and he heaved himself to his feet.
Sparkfang woke up. The mist had cleared, and he was in the camp. He ran into the Warriors den.
"Nightclaw!" He cried in anguish. Ember foot padded in. He lay a comforting paw on sparkfangs shoulders.
"I had the vision too." He whispered. Sparkfang stared at the umbreon. She was on her side, eyes closed. Dead. For the first time he noticed the three kits, trying in vain to suckle. He lifted a single Eevee by its scruff. Ember foot padded outside.
"The rest of the clans here!" He called, "they had the vision too." Mindwhisker padded into the den. She rested her tail on sparkfangs shoulders.
"I will care for the kits." She whispered, "I know how hard it is to lose a mate, I can't imagine what I would do if I lost mine." Sparkfang looked up at her, tears blurring his eyes. The mewling kit was still in his jaws. The espeon lifted the other two with her mind and walked out. Sparkfang remained by his mates side. He rasped his tongue over the kits head and realized something extraordinary. It was not an Eevee, but an umbreon!
The tiny eeveelution mewled for milk.
"I name you Nightkit," he whispered to the tiny she kit. "Lightstar!" He called, his voice sounded distant, "come quickly!" She did, and Sparkfang showed her Nightkit.
"Extraordinary." Murmered lightstar. "I'm so sorry for your loss, she saved us all." Sparkfang nodded. Psypelt padded in. The espeon lifted Nightclaw out to the medicine cats den, and Sagepelt prepared her body for burial. Sparkfang picked up Nightkit and carried her to the nursery, not wanting to look as Wavetail washed the blood out of the warrior den.
Nightclaws vigil was terrible. He sat by her side the whole time, his nose buried in her stiff fur. Lightstar sat there too. When the vigil was over Sparkfang insisted he bury Nightclaw himself. Lightstar agreed. He dug the hole, and sadly shoved Nightclaw in, giving her stiff ear one last lick. He wished he could join her in the hole, and go up to starclan with her.
Kicking dirt over the hole, Sparkfang smelled a weird scent. He whipped around. A starry vaporeon was behind him.
"Sparkfang, you must watch out. The gengar was right about a prophecy, but wrong about one thing. Nightclaw was not prophecied, but Nightkit." Sparkfang gasped and the vaporeon continued, " there will be a shadow, rising from the light to crush the spirit." He rasped. Flicking his tail, the vaporeon padded away, after a few taillengths he dissapered, leaving Sparkfang standing there, awestruck. He turned back to the mound of dirt.
"I will take care of your kits." He whispered, "softkit, love kit, and above all, Nightkit." He turned, and ran away into the night. A starry figure remained.
"I love you," she whispered after him, "ok starclan, I'm ready." Nightclaw slowly dissapered, and a new star flickered on in the sky.
