Chapter 16
Nightpaw pressed against Starstep fearfully. Without meaning to, the larger umbreon leaned down and licked the top of her head.
"It'll be ok," she whispered, as the umbreons closed in.
"Starstep!" called a regal voice. "I see you have the prophesied one. Why was she not brought to me?"
"Uh-oh," whispered Starstep, pressing to the ground in a submissive posture. "Darkstar's here."
"And why?" continued Darkstar, "Is our faithful warrior Mooneye unconscious in the ferns?" He darted forward and grabbed Mooneye from his hidden position, flinging him in front of Starstep's paws. "I think some severe punishment should-"
"It was me!" cried Nightpaw. The large Umbreon's gaze switched to look at her with cold dark eyes. "I dropped a rock on his head!" The ring of umbreon around Nightpaw unsettled her.
"And who." snarled Darkstar, glaring menacingly at Starstep, "gave you that idea?" Nightpaw thought fast.
"It's a hunting tactic we use in Lightclan!" She blurted before Starstep could speak. The apprentice walked in front of Starstep, flaring her wings protectively, and hiding the older umbreon from view. Darkstar narrowed his eyes even more, which seemed impossible.
"Lunarnose! Galaxyclaw! Take this pitiful creature back to camp." he snarled. Two umbreon stepped out of the ring around them, grabbing Nightpaw roughly. Darkstar growled.
"Not THAT pitiful creature, pichubrains! THE OTHER ONE!!!" Lunarnose and Galaxyclaw hastily dropped Nightpaw, yanked Starstep to her feet, and ran off into the undergrowth with her. Darkstar glared at Nightpaw, as if willing her to sink to the ground as Starstep did, but Nightpaw stayed standing. "So." Darkstar muttered. He began to pad in a circle around Nightpaw, inspecting her."You think you're the prophesied one."
"Well, the prophecy clearly states: There will be a shadow, rising from the light to crush the spirit. I'm a dark type Pokemon, I'm from Lightclan, and my mother was killed by a gengar, so it only makes sense that I would get revenge, oh, and.. wings? Duh?" Nightpaw replied, stretching out one wing and wiggling it. Many of the umbreon in the circle around her began muttering uncertainly, peering at her wings.
"ENOUGH." roared Darkstar, and the umbreons shut up, standing straight and tall as they had been. "How dare you talk like that to me, apprentice?" asked the leader, his voice dangerously quiet. "Nobody talks to me like that." He pounced forward, planting a large paw on her chest. "One of our umbreon shall be picked. It wasn't supposed to be you!"
"well too bad!" snapped Nightpaw, "because I'm the chosen one!" Nightpaw twisted out from under his large paw. Darkstar stepped back, shocked. A couple umbreon gasped. Nightpaw spread her wings and flew slightly upwards, showing off to the umbreons. "Do you really want to kill me?"called Nightpaw, circling over the umbreons' heads. "Because if you do, the prophecy is over." one umbreon stepped forward.
"I've believed in the prophecy since I was a kit!" He cried, "what's your name oh prophesied one?"
"Nightpaw!" Nightpaw called.
"For Nightpaw!" called the one umbreon. Others joined in, until the whole ring was chanting,
"Nightpaw! Nightpaw! Nightpaw!" Nightpaw beamed.
"Come on!" she commanded to the group, causing them to fall silent, "you, and you!" She pointed to two umbreon, "Tie up Darkstar and Mooneye in those vines!"
"MUTINY!!!" roared Darkstar, as the two advanced. "TRAITORS!!!!! THE LOT OF YOU!!!!" The umbreons ignored him, and tied him up with vines and gagged him with a leaf. They tied up Mooneye too, but he didn't protest, for he was still unconscious.
"Great! Now lets go find Starstep!" called Nightpaw. "Can anybody lead the way?" A medium sized umbreon stepped up.
"I'm Owlear." He spoke up to Nightpaw, "and it would be my pleasure." Nightpaw nodded. Owlear began running off in the same direction Lunarnose and Galaxyclaw. Nightpaw flew just behind him, followed by 10 invigorated umbreons. "Right this way-Er-Nightpaw." Owlear said proudly. A cliff loomed in front of them, but Nightpaw could see a cave hidden by ferns.
"In there o' great one!" Called an Umbreon from the crowd. Nightpaw blushed, but darted into the cave. In the entrance, she turned to the umbreons behind her.
"Thank you, all of you!!" She called, before flying into the darkness.
"Lightstar!" Sagepelt croaked. The sylveon whipped around, eyes burning.
"What, prisoner?!" She roared. Sagepelt stood as straight as she could.
"What have you done with Nightpaw?" The starving Leafeon demanded, her chained paw was raw and bleeding. Lightstar smiled.
"Lets just say she's on a little trip.." The leader paused, "To starclan!" she stared laughing evilly.
"No!" screeched Sagepelt, lurching forward. "I'll kill you! I'll kill you, you monster!" She pulled against her chain. Lightstar laughed.
"You, a puny rat? Ha, not likely." Lightstar grinned.
"NO!!!!" Sagepelt surged forward with a roar, the chain snapping.
"What?!" gasped Lightstar as Sagepelt ran at her. "PSYPELT!!" there was no fear in her call. The espeon teleported in front of Lightstar, psychically suspending Sagepelt in the nick of time.
"Let me go!" gasped Sagepelt, a tear leaking out of her eye. "Psypelt please!" The espeon looked away.
"Lightstar has made me deputy, Sagepelt." he whispered, "i'm sorry."
"THEY'LL LOOK FOR ME!!!!" screamed Sagepelt. Lightstar chuckled.
"No, they won't. Psypelt here has brainwashed the clan. No eevee knows your name, nor Nightpaw's." Sagepelt gasped.
"You fools." She whispered, "The clans will fall you pichubrains! Nightpaw is the prophesied one! She cannot die!" Sagepelt gasped suddenly, her eyes glowing white.
"What have you done espeon?!" Lightstar snarled. Psypelt looked at her, confused. Sagepelt's eyes went back to normal.
"A vision!" she gasped, "I've had a vision!"
"Put her down idiot!" commanded Lightstar, and Psypelt dropped Sagepelt hastily. Lightstar slithered up to Sagepelt, reminding the Leafeon of a seviper. Lightstar pinned Sagepelt to the wall of the den.
"Tell me." she whispered dangerously. Sagepelt smiled.
"It's Nightpaw! She's alive!" Sagepelt laughed. Lightstar roared in fury.
"NO! that's not possible!" Lightstar lunged forward and sank her claws into Sagepelt's throat. Sagepelt gasped. She tried to speak, but coughed up blood instead. Lightstar pressed harder. "HOLD HER FOOL!!!!!" Lightstar screeched to Psypelt. The espeon reluctantly held the thrashing leafeon still with his psychic powers. With a roar of fury Lightstar slashed Sagepelt's throat again, and again, and again. Finally she stopped. "Release her." Lightstar commanded, her voice eerily calm. Psypelt let Sagepelt drop to the ground in horror. He looked away. Lightstar smiled.
"Now you really won't see your precious Nightpaw ever again," she spat at Sagepelt's body. "Dispose of the body." she sniffed, and then she padded away, leaving a trail of bloody paw prints. Psypelt stared at the ground in disbelief and horror.
"i-i helped kill her.." he whispered, staring at Sagepelt's body. Her eyes were still open, but they were glassy and distant. "No.." psypelt whispered, and he lay down beside her, and began to cry.
