CHAPTER THREE
"What happens to me now?"
_________
Five woke with a sharp gasp, his heart beating fast and hard against his chest, making it hard to breathe for a few seconds. He struggled to sit up, disoriented as images flashed in front of his eyes. He shook his head as he staggered to his feet, stumbling when a particular image flashed in front of his eyes.
What the hell's happening to me?
Blinking hard, Five shook his head to clear it and the images faded, replaced with the concrete room he was inside of with his family. Inhaling deeply, Five reached up and pushed his hair to the side of his forehead, a frown covering up how he was actually feeling. He then rubbed his face and looked at the door to the cell then around at his siblings, who were just sitting there. They must have waited for him to wake up, the idiots.
Five stared at the door to the cell they were trapped in with eyes that spoke wonders. He wanted to rip the door off its hinges so he could get to the Sparrow siblings and rip their heads off. This whole situation was irritating him and he hated how he'd somehow been targeted. And he didn't know why. The not knowing was irking him, Five hated unknowns.
Not only did they kidnap him and his siblings and throw them all in a cell, but they had made him relive the first time he had time traveled and seen the apocalypse. The first time he had found his siblings, all of them dead and the world gone. Five was angry and worried, because if they had made him relive it then that would mean it was a threat. A threat to hurt his family if he didn't listen and/or follow the rules that were going to be given to him.
Five tried to jump but only a fizzle of sparks and a dim light happened. Throwing his hands up in utter frustration, he swore. "Ah fuck."
"Yeah, I don't think we're getting out of here anytime soon." Diego observed.
"We have to try. We have no idea what these people actually want from me, and to be honest I'm a little weirded out." Five said, turning to face his siblings who were agreeing with him, but not doing much to fix anything.
"Aww is little Five-y scared?" Klaus teased.
Five shook his head, clenching and unclenching his fists. "No. . . I don't know, maybe? But so what? You and I both know that there's much of the unknown that we should be afraid of."
Five's eyes flickered to Vanya across the room at the end of that sentence, partially talking about her. Her powers were an unknown, they had no idea how strong she was or what her limits were. He figured if her powers were enough to end the world then maybe they were enough to bring back life, like she had done with Harlan. Running his hand through his hair, he turned to Luther and put his other hand in his britches pockets.
"Luther, now would be a good time for you use your strength to get us out of here."
Luther gave a single nod and effortlessly broke off the chain that was holding him. He went around to break the others' chains all the while Five was deep in thought. He hoped they could get out of here, he really didn't want to know what the Sparrows had in store for him. Once all of his siblings were unchained Five heard Diego speak before him.
"The next person that comes through that door, we attack them." Diego viciously bit out.
Five gave a single nod, and the others agreed. After discussing their positions, they all got in place for the plan. As the Sparrows were interested in Five more than the others, Five had to put himself out there as bait. His part was to just stand in front of the door and look like a child, so if anyone walked in they would see him and their attention would be drawn. At the sound of the lock sliding out of place from the other side of the door, Five turned around just as the door was pulled open.
In the doorway were Marcus and Sloane, their eyes immediately falling on Five who had stopped what he was doing— which was nothing. He stared back at them, his eyes dark and calculating, waiting to see what they would do. The next few moments passed by in a blur, Five being swept away by everything happening at once.
Sloane had took a step towards him and then Diego was launching himself at her, Luther stepping in to help him. Marcus had started to call for backup but Vanya had used her abilities to send him flying into the wall, knocking him out in an instant. Five turned his attention to Sloane and his brothers; Luther was being held immobilized by her and Diego was trying to get up from being slammed into the wall.
Thinking quickly, Five snuck his way to the open doorway and turned around.
"Hey!" Five yelled, gaining her attention. As she turned to him, she threw Luther away like a rag-doll and her face softened. Backing away, Five made a mental note of how fast she had turned her attention to him. He kept a few feet of distance between her and himself, keeping tabs on how close she was getting and how much ground he had before he was backed into a wall. Thankfully they were in an old large basement with cement prison cells, so there was more than enough space for him to keep her at a distance.
"Five, why do you keep trying to fight us? We know you, we're family!" Sloane asked pleadingly. "We saved you!"
Shaking his head, Five took another step back. "I don't know you. Any of you. And I don't particularly like being kidnapped or held against my will."
Sloane frowned at him, the saddened expression now gone and replaced with a determination that gave Five an unsettling feeling. Keeping his eyes forward and trained on her, he felt around behind him for the door leading to the stairs. His words had seemed to gain a reaction from Sloane that was less than desirable.
"You do know who we are. I swear I'm going to get your memories back, Five! You'll remember us, I promise!"
Five continued backing away, still too weak to jump and he cursed silently when his back hit something. Or someone. Taking a deep breath, Five turned his head slightly and his heart filled with dread. Ben and Alphonso were standing directly behind him, both blocking the only way out. Closing his eyes for a brief second, he debated on making a run for it or giving up. This new batch of super-powered kids that Reginald had chosen to adopt, and called themselves The Sparrows, were way too committed to keeping Five trapped here. Only reason being that they knew this timeline's version of him and refused to reconsider that Five was not the same boy, born and raised in a totally different timeline with totally different people. If he gave up, that was it; he would have given them permission to do whatever they wanted with him and he didn't know what they would do to his family if he stayed.
Five made the resolute decision to make a run for it, which in turn meant he would fight to get out of here with his family. Opening his eyes, Five saw that the tall girl had gotten closer to him and he realized the predicament he was in. Sloane was in front of him and Ben and Alphonso behind; the only way he was going to get out from being boxed in was if he tried to jump. Five tried to pull on his powers, straining himself to do it. If he succeeded, he could get his family out of there. He could feel his powers quietly humming underneath his skin, waiting to be let out.
Suddenly, there was a knife at his neck, pressing into the skin over his carotid artery. From the angle he was standing, he could visually see that it was one of Diego's throwing knives. "I wouldn't try that if I were you, kid."
The voice by his ear belonged to Ben, who now had one of his arms across Fives chest, keeping him still. The boy with the melted face walked around to stand in front of him and out of desperation, Five kicked out at him, landing a solid strike to his stomach. In his desperation, Five had forgotten that any damage inflicted on Alphonso, would be reflected back at him. Crying out and gasping as air rushed out of his lungs, Five doubled over slightly, cradling his midsection.
"Yeah kid, if I were you, I'd tell your family to stop trying to escape." Alphonso said in a nonchalant manner.
Five snarled at him and jerked his body to try and get free from Ben, but the knife at his throat pressed harder into his skin giving him pause as it drew blood. Feeling the hot liquid sliding down the side of his neck, Five's eyes flickered to his family who were standing there watching with different expressions on their faces. Diego had his foot on Marcus' throat, holding him hostage and ready to make a deal. But Five knew making a deal with them would be a mistake. They weren't going to let him go.
"Let our brother go!" Allison shouted.
Five could hear the smirk in Ben's voice. "You first."
Five knew well enough that The Sparrows would never let him go unless he fought to free himself. A deal would be worthless, as they were obstinately set on keeping him. Ben pushed harder on the knife, breaking more skin and drawing more blood than necessary. Grimacing, Five watched the expression on Diego's face change to one of anger as he witnessed what Ben was doing.
"I'm getting a tad impatient, but I'm sure Five doesn't mind the knife at his throat. You know, if I were to push harder, I'd sever his carotid and he'd bleed out in seconds."
Five squirmed in his grasp, his heart beating a mile a minute against his chest. He was nervous. He was also scared, because deep down in some part of his brain, he knew Ben would kill him if he didn't get what he wanted. Sloane had turned to look at her brother, her eyes filled with concern.
"Ben, don't hurt him! Remember who he is. . ."
"Oh I remember who he is, Sloane. And as you might remember, we didn't get along very well." Ben hissed.
Five scoffed. "I'm sure it had nothing to do with you kidnapping him."
Ben grabbed his hair and jerked his head back, a scowl on his face. "One more word out of you, and I'll make sure you never talk again."
Five glowered at him, the threat sending fear and anger through him. He didn't say another word after the threat, but made it known that he hated all of the Sparrows by the look in his eyes. Luther stood tall and held out a hand, as though warding off a wild animal. Any other time, the sight would be comical because it was Luther. He was huge.
"There's no need for any of us to fight like this. Just let all of us leave, Five included, and we'll let Marcus go."
"They're not going to listen." Five spoke. "Their obstinance is mind boggling."
Ben kicked Five in the back of his right knee, jerking him up before he could fall. Five yelped in pain and surprise, causing Allison to speak for the first time.
"I heard a rumor—"
"I will cut his throat before you even finish that sentence." Ben threatened, holding Fives head back. "Now let Marcus go, and I'll consider letting Five go free."
Five strained to look at his siblings with his head pulled back so far. Diego was glaring at Ben and Alphonso, completely ignoring Sloane. Five deduced it was because Diego had marked the two males as the primary threats, and he wasn't wrong to. He must have seen something on Ben's face because he removed his foot from Marcus' throat and backed away. Five closed his eyes, knowing what a grave mistake Diego had just made.
"Are you sure that was a good idea?" Klaus asked warily as he watched Marcus get to his feet and stumble out of the cell.
"Did you want to call his bluff and let Five get killed? 'Cus I didn't."
Ben laughed loudly and obnoxiously as Marcus closed the door to the cell. Five was confused; why were they not putting him back in the cell? He got his answer when Ben spun him around, lifting the knife from his throat. "You're coming with us, Five-y."
"What? No! That wasn't the deal!" Diego yelled as they started to drag Five out of the basement. "Five, I swear we're going to get you out of here! Just hang on!"
Five craned his neck to look at his family, eyes wide and full of fear. He had no idea what they were going to do to him, and with Ben threatening his life every few seconds, he doubted he'd even get to the front door before a knife was sticking out of him. There was no way he could jump himself to safety when they had some sort of device to block his powers and he wouldn't leave his family behind. He caught one more glimpse of his siblings before he was pulled around a corner and out of sight.
Five made a promise that no matter what they did to him, he wasn't going to let them erase his memories or make him forget that they are the enemy.
