Chapter 1

The Senior Year series 2: Ultio's List.

Nnenna kept her gaze steady on the sleeping girl at the back of the class. She had so many thoughts swirling around her mind and she wondered if she was overthinking the situation.

"Nnenna stop being a creep." Brume pushed the girl sitting beside her lightly. Fortunately the push knocked Nnenna back to her senses.

"I'm not being a creep. It's just that…" she started but her eyes drifted back to the sleeping girl at the back. Nini's ears perked up and she quickly shifted her chair closer to Brume's. Gabby noticed the action and knew that a new gist was about to be shared so she stood up from her chair and sat on Nnenna's desk.

"You guys should promise not to tell a soul about what I'm about to tell you, okay?" Nnenna looked at the three girls in doubt and they nodded eagerly. She sighed and looked around the noisy class. Nobody seemed to be paying attention to them so she cleared her throat.

"On Monday, a junior student came to the school clinic asking to see the nurse, who was thankfully not around. The student had something with her, she said she found it in a senior's bag." She started.

"What did the student find?" Nini whispered.

"A pregnancy test. It tested positive and it's Alisha's." The three girls let out noises of surprise, gaining the attention of a few of their classmates. They shushed each other and scooted closer to Nnenna.

"Alisha as in Alisha the loner?" Gabby asked, pointing at the sleeping girl at the back. Nnenna nodded slowly as she too looked at Alisha.

"No way." Nini said covering her mouth.

"Will she drop out of school? Or maybe abort?" Brume thought out loud. A shiver ran through her spine as she looked at her friends with wide eyes.

"We didn't hear anything abeg." Gabby warned and the girls nodded, rushing back to their seats.

"Damien, Mrs Isioma is asking for you." Tobe said walking to his seat with Natasha in tow.

"Why?" Damien asked not looking up from the textbook in his hand. Kelvin gulped nervously as he looked at the two boys.

"How am I supposed to know? Go and ask her." Tobe replied irritatedly.

"As the deputy head boy, go and answer her instead and tell her I'm busy too." Damien said waving his hand in dismissal.

"Just ignore him." Natasha said, tugging Tobe's arm but the boy was not having any of it.

"Stop being childish. I'm not your servant." Tobe spat. Damien sighed and closed the book in his hand.

"I never called you a servant but your mother was a cleaner so I guess the servitude genes runs in you." Damien said calmly.

"Why the heck are you bringing my mother into this eh Damien?" Tobe snarled taking a step closer to the calm boy.

"For a murderer's son, you sure are proud of her." Damien said, tilting his head to the side. The comment turned on a switch in Tobe's head because the boy rushed to Damien and held him up by the collar. Kelvin jumped up from his seat and tried pulling Tobe out but the boy had a firm grip on the collar.

"Say a word about my mother and I swear I'll punch your teeth out." Tobe growled. Damien scoffed before pushing Tobe backwards.

"Touch a hair on my head and I'll ruin your life. Your scholarship and house will be gone faster than you think. Your golddigger of a mother can't afford your fees, can she? She couldn't even get a husband of her own." Damien smirked. Tobe's anger radar was already blowing up but he didn't make any move.

"If your mother was so rich and powerful enough, why couldn't she keep your father in check?" Tobe asked and he smiled victoriously when he saw anger flash in Damien's eyes. "Guy you are older than me by two months, not even your mum's pregnancy could keep your father at home. For a woman that was not good enough, you sure are proud of her." Tobe added and walked back to his seat. Damien was about to drag him back when Kelvin held him back. He whispered a few words into his friend's ear and Damien kicked the chair in front of him instead.

Sam entered the class and saw the aftermath. He didn't need anyone to tell him what happened. It was the same cycle since the previous term after the last principal died. The step brothers were always at each other's necks at every chance they got. It was second term already and Sam hoped that the boys didn't kill each other till they graduated.

He took his usual seat beside his neighbor who was asleep. He often wondered why she was always asleep in class. When she was not sleeping, she was staring into space. The seat by her left was empty. Her one and only friend wasn't around surprisingly, the two were always attached by the hip.

Alisha slowly raised her head from the desk twisting her face in pain. Her hands gripped the part of the uniform covering her stomach area tightly.

Sam quickly rushed to her side in worry. He held her up as she gripped his arm.

"Nnenna come abeg." He called and the girl ran towards them.

"What's wrong? Did you eat something bad?" The clinic prefect asked worriedly. Alisha took deep breaths before crying out yet again. The entire class mumbled out apologies as Nnenna and Sam helped the girl out of her seat.

"I'll take her to the clinic." Nnenna said as she placed Alisha's left arm around her neck and held onto the sick girl's waist.

As the two girls left the class, they saw the Dean of Studies heading to his office with a junior student behind him.

"What's going on here?" He asked. He bent down to look at the patient's face only to realize it was Alisha.

"She's having a stomachache or something. The nurse is not around now. Can you please call the hostel mistress for us?" Nnenna pleaded. The older man squeezed his face in a frown before nodding his head.

"Take her to the hostel first and go to your class. I'll tell the hostel mistress everything." He said and Nnenna sighed in relief.

She helped Alisha to the hostel and laid her down on one of the beds. Ugochi, their classmate, was about to leave when she saw the girls.

"What's up?" She asked, carrying her bag.

"Can you look after her for sometime? I'll get the school bus ready and see the hostel mistress." Nnenna pleaded and dashed out before Ugochi could respond.

"God.." Alisha muttered as she rolled on the bed. Ugochi tried to pat her back but it ended up being an awkward pat.

Ugochi noticed a red patch on the bed and realized it was coming from Alisha.

"She's bleeding.." she muttered before her eyes widened in fear. "Help!" She yelled, running out of the hostel. She almost collided with Amber who was rushing inside the hostel.

"Where is she? Alisha.. Nnenna said.." Amber said, breathing heavily. Ugochi pointed towards the hostel and they both entered the hostel to see Alisha lying in her own pool of blood.

Amber sat outside the hospital room. Her body shook with fear as she wondered what was going on inside the room. She had seen doctors flood in and out but nobody had said anything. The new principal, Mrs Isioma, sat beside her as they waited for the doctor or anyone to tell them what was going on.

Finally, the door opened and their school nurse stepped out of the room. Her eyes were red and puffy and her lips were trembling.

"Ma, come inside." She said to the principal. Amber rushed to get up but the older woman held her back. Amber knew she couldn't sit still and wait for the principal to come out so she waited for Mrs Isioma to enter the room before rushing to hear what they were talking about through the door.

"Good day ma." A male voice greeted. It was probably the doctor. "She took a very dangerous drug that shouldn't be in the possession of a student. We tried to flush it out but it was too late. It had already damaged her insides." He said, "She bled to death madam. The nurse will brief you on the rest of the details. I'm sorry for your loss." The door opened and the doctor came face to face with a shell shocked Amber. He tapped her shoulder in pity and closed the door behind him.

A single tear rolled down from her eyes. It was not true, right? The girl she saw that very morning, the girl she spoke with, the girl that had suffered so much at a very young age was gone. It's not possible.

"Ma, the doctor said she was two weeks pregnant." The nurse finally said. Her voice broke in the end as she tried to control herself.

    "What?!" Mrs Isioma exclaimed.

"The school is in third week now ma." The nurse added.

"Do you know what this means?" Mrs Isioma breathed.

"Whoever impregnated her did so within the school premises." The nurse replied.

"This is bad." The principal said.

"We need to inform the police ma. She might've been raped or worse, whoever impregnated her might have forced her to abort the baby or something and -"

"Ada stop talking for a minute." The principal said and the nurse closed her mouth. "We can't call the police." She said and Ada gasped.

   "But-"

"Barely six months ago we had a huge case in our school. It was all over the social media and it was a huge blow to the school. We can not have another case." The woman said with finality etched in her tone. "Our school might be closed down. Just imagine how many people will suffer the loss."

Ada began to sob as she digested what the principal was telling her to do. She looked at the pale girl who was lying on the hospital bed, lifeless. She apologized to the girl in her heart.

"The girl's mother is on her way here from Abuja. I'll go talk to the doctor." Mrs Isioma said, looking at the crying nurse. "Ada, Alisha committed suicide and that's all. Do you understand?" She warned and Ada nodded.

Amber froze in her spot as she broke down that the conversation she overheard. She slowly went back to the chair where she was previously seated.

The principal wanted to cover up the case. Amber knew very well who the culprit was and she was ready to tell the school authority everything but now, it was obvious that she would be ignored or forced to close her mouth.

The principal stepped out of the room and saw Amber. She recalled that Amber was always with Alisha so she wondered if the girl had any idea of her friend's pregnancy.

"Amber my dear." The motherly tone she used would've deceived Amber if she hadn't overheard the discussion that went on. "Did Alisha tell you about any sickness or any other body problem in the past?" She was beating around the bush and Amber knew what she was asking about.

"No ma. She never told me anything personal." Amber lied with a straight face. If the school authority was not going to seek justice for her dead friend, then she was going to serve justice on a platter… in her own way.
