Ch. 21: Alpha Incursion

Metropolis-Gotham Bridge
Long Island Sound
June 3, 2011 || 1600 EDT

Lois Lane double checked her notes as she sat in traffic. The story on the Thorn crime family was coming together quite nicely, unlike this gridlock. She only moved half an inch in the past half hour.

"You couldn't just email Perry the transcript," Jimmy Olsen groaned, annoyed at how slow they were moving.

"It's not my fault they shut down two lanes," Lois replied, pointing to the string of traffic cones on their right.

A loud rumbling was heard approaching from the right on the same side as the cones.

"Keep it Moving!!!" a man in green army fatigues shouts above the rumble of the column of tanks he's escorting.

The soldier stands to the side as the massive pieces of rolling armor slowly crawl their way across the bridge.

Lois shares a look with Jimmy, then throws the car into park.

"Switch me seats," she orders as she crawls over the young red.

He squirms and ends up in the driver's seat——only to shout about not knowing how to drive stick when the ace reporter dashes out the door and chases after the grunt.

"Sir! Lois Lane! Daily Planet!" She shouts as she runs the grunt down. "If I could have just a moment of your time!"

"Ma'am! I need you to get back into your car," the Marine orders sternly, but calmly.

"Just a few questions, please," she persists.

The Marine sighs and nods, making Lois smirk.

"Name and rank?" She starts off easy.

"Lance Corporal Jason Bard, Global Privatized Marine Corps," the man replies dutifully.

"May I can you Jason?" She follows up, trying to get him to lower his guard.

"Lance Corporal will suffice," he says as he inspects the next military machine.

"How long have you worked for Global?"

"About five years," he replies continuing to move forward with the column. He gestured to the robotic brace on his leg. "They took me in to help with this. Never left."

She nodded and asked about his injury, and he replied that it happened on patrol with the Real Marines in Afghanistan.

"Can we cut to the chase Ms. Lane? I have two columns of tanks to get across this bridge," Bard complained. Turning around, he shouted some orders for one of the tank drivers to straighten up.

Lois then asks the tough question, "What are these tanks for, Lance Corporal? You excepting an invasion or something?"

The Lance Corporal shrugged, "Top Brass says we move, me move them."

"Why not use the trucks?"

"Because the trucks are easier to steal," he stated, chillingly. "It was a statement to the criminal elements of Gotham that we will not back down."

"So there have been threats made against the barracks in Gotham?" Lois infers, quirking her brow.

Lance Corporal Bard just rolled his eyes and glanced up at the sky, dramatically——not wanting to talk to this reporter anymore. But, what he saw peaked his interest. As well as the interest of several other motorists and pedestrians, whom were now standing amongst the gridlock. All of them were looking up at the torrential turbulence in the sky.

Out of the grey clouds came a subtle but ominous blue glow. And an airliner, whose engines had failed her. It was heading straight for the bridge.

Bard grabbed Lois and climbed into the closest tank——ordering the column to split down the middle by company and hightail it off the bridge. The beasts of steel accelerated to highway speeds as he told the reporter to hang on.

A streak of blue flew just overhead and caught the plane. Thus, it missed two of the bridge towers by mere inches.

There was a loud bang as the plane was set down on the river.

The tank exited the bridge to the right, as a loud crack of thunder literally opened up the sky.

He cursed the name of God as he saw three giant ships exit a massive blue disk in the sky.

Aboard the lead ship, Dr. Zola smirked as he viewed the City of Tomorrow below him. He revealed and basked in the glory of his next conquest.

Behind him, the weaken archer could only watch as the ship hovered over the sister cities. The ship's bridge crew preparing to give the orders to lay waste to everything, including her home. She hoped that one of her neighbors would get her mother out before things get too bad.

"Mien Füher!!" One of the deck officers called as he approached Zola. "The relay is in place. We are ready for your broadcast."

Zola turned to the captive archer and smirked evily——to which Artemis just snarled and made a show of trying to break from her bindings.

A/N:

Hey guys!!

Long time no see!

Sorry this update took so long.

I kinda had trouble with finding out where I wanted this one to stop and the next one to begin, but that is resolved now.

There's no promises on there being an update next week. Even though I'm only leaving my home for work (because FedEx is essential) or groceries, I still have my course work to get done so that I can finally get a "real job".

Hope that yins are staying safe and that yins are healthy.

As always, your support (and playful nagging) are what keeps me on track with my writing. So, please, vote, comment, and follow. PM me even.

Until next time,

Have a great day!!
