Ch. 20: Overwhelmed

Parker Residence
Queens, New York

June 3, 2011 || 16:16 EDT

Robin worked tirelessly as he ran a search of every traffic cam and security camera in the city. He still couldn't find the SUV the Hydra goons used to take Artemis. He glanced up for a minute to check on his friends.

He saw M'gann and Ava huddled around Zatanna and trying to comfort her. A quick glance to the right confirmed that Luke and Danny were attempting the same with the ailing speedster. Said redhead was currently rage eating a box of energy bars.

Joe was on his phone, shouting at his alternate. Angrily informing him of who the mole was. His free hand balled into a fist and waving around angrily with each statement.

Robin just sighed as he scrolled through more camera feeds. He was hoping that wherever Artemis is, that she was staying strong.

Artemis grunted as she struggled against her captors. She tugged, kicked, and thrashed to no avail. Her hands bound behind her back as the two bricks dragged her down a long hallway.

They shoved her throw a doorway and tossed the blonde archer to her knees. Landing her in front of the large, imposing, robotic form of Arnim Zola.

The Geriatric Android stood proud and menacingly before her.

"Enjoying your accommodations?" Zola smirked in sadistic enjoyment.

The fiery blonde glared at the metal man, "Oh please... I've had worse treatment from my own father."

Her voice filled with a waning sense of confidence and much malice. Her stormy grey eyes not yielding under the gaze of the mechanical man, whom just smirked and cackled evilly.

"Then you won't mind us running a few tests, then?" Zola smirked.

The goons holding onto her elbows tightened their grip, making her question, "What kind of tests?"

Her brow quirked, both in intrigue and as if mocking his sense of authority.

Zola gestured to the computer machine behind him, where his top experts have removed the true Transdimensional Transceiver from its protective violin-shaped housing.

"While the device can briefly open small portals on its own, it requires more... information about the foreign universe," he explained, as one scientist approached with a set of syringes.

One of the men gripped her head and shoved it to the side, in order to expose her neck, as another scientist grabbed one of the syringes and cautiously inserted it into her neck——taking a blood sample.

"Specifically, it needs a source of matter from the foreign universe," Zola grinned madly, as the scientists continue to take blood from the archer.

Artemis winced with each prick, and soon became slightly lightheaded from the loss of blood. She stumbled more as the goons restrained her in a chair. She watched as the pair of scientists placed each individual vial of her blood into a slot on the far side of the computer.

In the center of the large computational machine was the Transceiver. It started to buzz and glow a deep blue as it it started to feast on the data from the archer's blood like a vampire. Or maybe a leech, since every single light in the facility started to dim dramatically. Eventually, the only thing providing light was the transceiver itself; bathing the large metal-lined chamber in an eerie blue glow as its buzzing kept increasing in pitch.

Connor sighed as he finished retelling the story of his team's arrival for the third time, to the seventh agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. One of them was walking in circles around him with some kind of scanner.

"Agent Fitz, that's your fourth pass," Agent Johnson complained, rolling her eyes at the scientist.

"For give me, Skye, for geeking out over the first interdimensional traveler I've ever seen," Fitz replied excitedly. "Not to mention one as gifted as he is."

"The 'he' has a name," Connor grumbled. He too was also growing annoyed with the young scientist.

Fitz mumbled an apology, then packed up his gear—having collected enough information about the half-Kryptonian.

"The information from these quantum scans should aid in isolating the correct frequency set in order to help send you and your friends home," Fitz concluded. "Especially, if we are unable to recover the Transdimensional Transceiver."

"It's been an honor and a real delight," he smiled, holding out his hand to Conner.

"I'm just glad that someone is actually trying to help us," Connor smiled back, shaking his hand.

Fitz smiled and bid them adieu, leaving Connor with Agent Johnson, whom continued to question him—much to his displeasure.

Meanwhile, Kaldur was undergoing a similar interrogation from Agent Karma, whom had her helmet switched to visor mode as they walked through the facility. The dark haired teen was eyeing the Atlantian suspiciously.

"Is there a problem, Agent Karma?" Kaldur asked as politely as he could muster, given his circumstances.

Karma continued to side glance at him, intrigued, "Just trying to figure something out. To wrap my head around something."

He quirked brow at her and paused in his stride, "Mind sharing?"

"A little," she sighed, stopping next to him and opening a door to a small side room.

She pulled the dark-skinned boy in after her and the door locked behind them. She took a deep breathe and asked, "What is my alternate like?"

Kaldur responded dutifully, "There is not much difference. You both are strong, powerful, fierce women. Very goal driven and feel safe following a command structure."

He then smirked and playfully added, "And, also, quite beautiful."

Karma blushed slightly at the comment; the caramel skin of her cheeks turning a shade of pink that would have complimented her chocolate eyes, if they were not hidden by her visor.

She cleared her throat and asked, "And what is our—your relationship like? With her, I mean."

She turned away to hide her growing blush, from her slip of the tongue.

Kaldur just smirked at this and took a step closer.

"We have good times and bad, like all couples," he replied. "We trust each other fully and leave no secrets. We do have the occasional... passionate moment."

It was his turn to blush, and Agent Karma glanced back. She smiled slightly at how cute his reddening cheeks looked.

"You trying to make a move on me, Atlantian?" She smirked coyly. Sashaying her hips as she backed up against the desk behind her.

Kaldur smirked dangerously, as he closed the distance between them, "Would that not be infidelity?"

Karma chuckled slightly as her visor pulled back—revealing her chocolate brown eyes.

"Not sure," she teased, her lips just a whisper away from his. "It would still be you and her, wouldn't it?"

She leaned forward and closed the distance between. Her lips smirking upon contact with his.

Artemis could only watch as the Transceiver stabilized. Having found the correct quantum frequency, the device glowed a deep green that ironically matched her costume.

"Prepare for launch!!" Zola ordered joyously.

Artemis held tight to her chair as the entire complex trembled. She had the weirdest sensation of vertigo. Feeling as though the facility was being lifted into the sky.

"Only you two idiots could screw this up," Agent Domingo groaned as he listened to the hundreds of other angry motorists stuck in the gridlock.

The aforementioned idiots ignored him as they restarted their argument. Again.

After a few seconds, everything grew quiet.

"Did you feel that?" The driver asked, curiousity covering his face.

The other guy nodded, "It felt like the bridge moved."

After a tense moment of uncomfortable silence, the SUV started to softly rock from side to side as the bridge visible shook. The steel girders and butresses groaned from the unnatural movement. It wasn't an intense movement. More like a harmonic vibration.

Agent Domingo looked out his window and saw something peculiar. He stood and exited the vehicle and squeezed his way to sidewalk a few lanes away, much to the outrage of many motorists. Although, several others had joined him in observing the ever-growing trio of whirlpools in the center of the East River. But none of them matched the ferocity of the torrent that was forming in the sky.

Agent Karma and Aqualad immediately separated from each other as an alarm blared throughout the base.

"GENERAL CALL!! GENERAL CALL!!" The PA system shouted. "BREACH DETECTED ABOVE THE 59TH STREET BRIDGE!! REPEAT!! LARGE BREACH DETECTED ABOVE 59TH STREET BRIDGE!! ALL UNITS RESPOND!!"

"Duty calls," Agent Karma smirks, peeking the fishman's lips before they exited the room.

Kaldur followed close behind her as they meet up with Superboy and Agent Johnson on their way to the Command Center.

"What's going on?" Superboy asked, even though he had his suspicions.

They burst into the room, and Agent Karma answered, "Hydra is invading your world."

On the large screen, several black helicarriers were shown rapidly approaching a literal tear in the sky. On the bottom of each one was the grotesque, red symbol of their proprietors.

A/N:
Hey guys!!
Here's the part I promised. Not much of a cliffhanger ending, but things are going to move quickly from this point on. Although I don't technically have class due to the outbreak, I still have all my online stuff to do and we just started a new unit. I'll try to update this story weekly, but no promises.

As always, please comment, vote, follow, and criticize if you want more parts in less time. Your nagging, encouragement, and criticism keeps me on track and keeps this story in my head.

Hope you all have a nice day!!
