PP's POV
"Please kiss me again," Billkin said in a soft pleading voice.
I automatically stiffened in my spot, not knowing how to respond to Billkin's request. I was aware of his mom staring curiously at me, waiting intently for my next move.
Oh well, I told myself, Billkin's request was already incriminating enough.
Here we go, in for a penny, in for a pound...
I lowered my head to kiss him on his forehead once more, as I had done earlier and which really was all that I did.
"Aaaccckkk..." Billkin's mom's strangled voice escaped from her mouth when suddenly Billkin pulled my neck down and my lips landed full on his lips.
I straightened myself immediately feeling the blood rush from my chest to my neck and then to my face.
"What was that all about?" Billkin's mom's voice was hardly above a whisper.
"I'm so sorry ... " I started to say when Billkin interrupted me with "Mom, we've been a couple for several years now, I don't know how you haven't noticed at all."
"No, we're not," I started to deny when suddenly Billkin started to grimace in pain.
"What's the matter, son?" Billkin's mom asked in alarm.
"My chest hurts," Billlkin moaned, clutching at his chest.
"Let me call the nurse," I said equally alarmed, already making my way out the door.
"Wait! Wait!" Billkin called out and I stopped short of turning the doorknob.
"I don't need a nurse," he said but I noticed that he was still clutching at his chest.
"What do you need then, son?" Billkin's mom asked, her face full of concern for her son.
"I ... I ... I would like to be alone with PP," he said, looking a bit embarrassed.
I was feeling very much embarrassed as well. What was Billkin up to now. I don't know what he read into that forehead kiss earlier. I only had done it as a sympathetic act of gesture. I had not meant it to be anything else. He lied shamelessly to his mom that he and I were a couple. Now I don't know what his mom might be thinking of me.
"Sure," Billkin's mom replied immediately. Then she turned to me saying, "If there's anything that you need feel free to text me or call me."
"Thank you, ma'am, I will," I replied.
"Mom, not ma'am," she corrected me.
"She won't give you a passing grade if you forget again," I heard Billkin muttering under his breath from his hospital bed, the cheeky bastard.
"Well then, I will say good night to both of you," Billkin's mom said, giving her son a quick kiss on his forehead before walking towards the door.
I turned the doorknob this time and opened the door for her.
She stepped out of the door but turned back to me with the words, "I'm totally fine with you being my future son in law."
I felt my blood rushing up to my neck and to my face once more.
And to make matters worse, she gave me a double wink, ohgod.
I stood rooted to my spot at the door watching her walk away with my jaw almost reaching my chest.
"PP ..." the voice of Billkin calling me softly from his bed brought me back to reality.
I closed the door and turned around slowly and started walking towards him.
As I got closer to him I noticed that a tear was slowly rolling from the side of his eye down towards the side of his face.
With a fast beating heart I approached him and when I got near enough he said in a very hurt voice, "Why did you deny to my mom that we are a couple?"
I almost blurted out, "Because we are not" but the pained look in his eyes made me hold back my tongue.
Instead, I replied, "I did not want to give her a shock."
"She won't be shocked by the news because she knows that we have been seeing each other for a long time now," Billkin argued.
"But as far as she knows we are just close friends and nothing more," I argued back.
"... and nothing more ..." he repeated my last three words slowly, the pain undeniably showing in his voice.
I wanted to tell him that I was afraid to consider him as anything more than just a friend because during all the time that we had spent together he had never once said that he loved me and that he wanted us to be officially together. And that was why I had never stopped him from seeing or dating other people. And many times the reason he would cancel a dinner or lunch date with me was because he had to be with other people. I never questioned him about those occasions because I felt that I did not have the right to do so. After all we were not a couple.
I was shaken out of my thoughts by Billkin's voice. He was talking again.
"... then I guess you and Tae are a couple then," I heard him saying under his breath.
Before I could deny his accusation, my phone sounded in my pocket.
I fished it out of my pocket.
Oh shit, Tae was video calling me.
I could tell from Billkin's face that he had seen whose face was on my screen.
Suddenly he turned his face towards the wall, saying, "Actually I don't need you to keep me company tonight."
