Third Person POV
Billkin's mom knocked softly on her son's hospital room door before turning the knob and quietly walking in.
PP had moved his chair close beside Billkin's hospital bed and had lain his head sideways on the edge of Billkin's bed. He had used his arms as a pillow.
Billkin's mom was not sure if PP was asleep. His eyes were closed and he did not seem to have heard her knocking.
Billin's mom moved quietly forward to peer down at her son's sleeping face. He looked peaceful and comfortable.
Billkin's mom quietly set down the paper bag that contained the dinner that she had brought for PP on the small table in the corner. Then she sat on the cushioned bench by the wall that could serve as a bed for a visitor who might want to stay overnight with a patient.
After a few minutes, there was a knock on the door and then a nurse came in carrying a small tray with an alcohol pad and a syringe.
"I will be giving the patient his next dose of antibiotic through his IV line," the nurse announced.
The nurse's voice awakened PP. He slowly stirred awake and raised his head from Billkin's hospital bed. He looked around his surroundings, his eyes squinting with sleepiness. Then he noticed Billkin's mom sitting on the cushioned bench by the wall.
PP stood from his chair and bowed to greet Billkin's mom.
"Thank you for staying with my son," Billkin's mom said. "I have brought you some food for dinner."
"Thank you, Mrs. ..."
"Stop," Billkin's mom interrupted PP. "Just call me mom."
PP smiled shyly.
"Okay, mom," he said. "Thank you for bringing me some food. I didn't realize that I was hungry until you mentioned food."
PP did not eat right away. He watched as the nurse injected the needle of the syringe into the port hole of the IV line and slowly pushed the plunger to give Billkin his antibiotic dose. Then she turned to Billkin's mom.
"If he grimaces in pain or if he awakens and can talk and complains of any pain, press the call button and I will come and bring him some IV pain medication," she said.
Before the nurse left, she stopped at the door to ask. "Is someone going to stay with the patient overnight?"
"I will," PP and Billkin's mom answered at the same time.
"You don't have to stay overnight with Billkin," Billkin's mom said to PP. "You have done enough. You must go home and get some rest."
"I will be fine," PP insisted.
"Whoever will stay with the patient overnight, please don't hesitate to press the call button if you notice any significant change in his condition, especially any facial grimacing," she instructed both PP and Billkin's mom before leaving the room.
"Okay, thanks," again both Billkin's mom and PP spoke at the same time.
"The food smells good and I haven't even taken off the lid from its container yet," PP said with a smile.
"It's chicken biryani with aromatic basmati rice," Billkin's mom said. "I stopped by the newly opened Indian restaurant close to the mall on my way here."
"Would you like to have some?" PP offered Billkin's mom.
"No, thanks, I had dinner before I came here," Billkin's mom said. "Everything in that paper bag is for you."
"Thank you again, mom," PP said.
PP ate every single crumb of the delicious Indian dish. The ice cold and very sweet tamarind juice completed his dinner.
Suddenly Billkin started to stir restlessly.
Both PP and Billkin's mom rushed over to Billkin's hospital bed.
"What is it, son?" Billkin's mom said, taking Billkin's hand and caressing it gently.
"PP," Billkin said in a weak voice.
"I'm here, sweetheart," PP said and then softly said "oops" when Billkin's mom looked at PP wide eyed. She had thought all this time that PP and her son were just close friends.
"Please ... kiss me again," Billkin said softly.
Billkin's mom's eyes grew even wider.
PP's cheeks turned red.
