Chapter 35 - Denial

Previously on UD...

"Who else knows about this?"

"I have already said who knew about this, but I have been requested by Hoshi and Caralina to take away their memories of her, they have been suffering along side her, worrying about her because Akito didn't permit them to see her at any given time, and even forbade for the three to send letters to each other. They want to forget her."

"I knew it." All eyes fell upon the standing Sohma, the Sohma who was casted away for what she was. Ammara Akira Sohma stared at Hatori, her eyes narrowed in resentment.

3rd Person's POV

"That isn't what I-" Akira silenced him with a scoff, "I figured it, but to hear it, oh boy, that takes something off of my shoulders." Akira's glare hardened intensely. Hatori sighed, standing up from his seat on the floor and taking a small step towards her.

"Look-"

"Nah."

"Let me explain, you walked in and just assumed that what I said was the only thing I said and meant-"

"Bullshit, and who the hell gave you the audacity to tell them?!" Akira asked, referring to her cousins in the room.

"So she knows that..." Shigure muttered under his breath.

"How did you-"

"I assumed! And looks like I assumed correct Hatori!" Akira was becoming more and more enraged with every passing moment, she was done.

"Ammara, please let me finish."

"Don't call me that." She sneered, her voice hard in tone, "The reason why they want to forget about you is because they have been dealing with the worry and anxiety of knowing if you are even alive Ammara, they don't want to find out one day that you are dead and live with that for the rest of their lives." Hatori tried to reason with her, but she just shook her head at him, backing away, her already blurred vision worsening when she could feel tears well up in her eyes.

"No. They want to forget me because I didn't turn out to be who they wanted me to be. They loathe me." She turned around on her heel and stormed back into her room, sliding the door hard making Hatori jump at the force.

"Ammara-!"

"Hatori, let her cool down." Ayame spoke up, looking up at his dear friend, "This isn't the best time to be reasonable with her. She needs to cool down for a while." Hatori sighed deeply, pinching the bridge of his nose as he felt a headache coming on. He looked down at the table, at his cousins and friends of the family who could on sit in silence, not knowing what to say or do.

"You guys should head home, and Shigure." Shigure stood up along with the ones currently living at his house, which was the majority of the younger cousins "Yes?" He asked Hatori.

"Call Akito, tell him to let Hoshi and Caralina come here. Make something up as an excuse."

"Appointment?" Ritsu asked and Hatori shrugged, "Whatever could convince him, but don't mention her to him." Shigure nodded in agreement.

"Alright, I will see what I can do. Come on guys, you have school in the morning." Shigure told them. The six of them began to leave.

"Do you mind if Shigure takes you two home instead of me?" Hatori asked Rin and Serena who nodded.

"It's fine with us, you just do your best here with erm..." Serena began but was stricken with confusion, did she call her by Akira or Ammara? Hatori nodded.

"Thank you, you two."

"No problem, come on Serena." Rin grabbed her hand and continued walking out with the rest of the crew. Tohru briefly stopped at the doorway, looking down the hall where she knew Akira was in the room.

"She doesn't even look like you guys..." Tohru softly commented. Hatori nodded in agreement.

"No crazy hair color or physical attributes. The only one she really looks like is Kagura as they hold the same colored hair and eyes." Tohru nodded before quickly bowing at Hatori and leaving. That left Ayame and Ritsu in the room.

"Let me know if you need anything." Ayame told him, resting his hand upon Hatori's shoulder.

"Actually, do you mind going to Akira's place? Bring some clothes for her, it would be better for her to stay here where it is warm." Ayame nodded.

"Alright. But where is it exactly?"

"Nearby Shigure's place, ask him for directions." Hatori told him. Ayame left, bidding farewell calmly. Ritsu walked over to the phone, leaning against the wall beside it. He was dumbstruck, he didn't know what to say, he wasn't his usual cautious self that worried way too much.

"How could I have agreed to let my memory be.... Wiped of her?" Ritsu asked Hatori. Hatori shrugged softly with his hands in his jean pockets.

"You didn't have a choice. Akito chose who got to keep their memories and who didn't. He almost ordered me to rid of Ammara's memories as well but, I couldn't bring myself to."

"Why?"

"I was her guardian, the one who taught her math and science, I taught her everything that I could since she wasn't allowed to go to regular school like the rest of our cousins. I have known her since she was a baby, I was the third person to hold her, I took care of when no one else could... I had just grown so attached to her to the point of the thought of me ever having to get rid of her memories broke me inside. So, I told Akito I couldn't, and he for once agreed with me, saying that she was still a Sohma, a person who is cursed. Not remembering who she was would only bring the family danger." Hatori took a deep breath, looking down at his feet.

"I'm sorry Hatori, I truly am. I didn't realize how bad this affected you."

"Ammara and her parents got the worse of it, trust me. Akito practically ruined their lives in one fall sweep." He used his hand to elaborate his words. He stared at Ritsu who looked up at the clock on the wall.

"It's late, do you know if she has eaten yet?" Hatori shook his head. Ritsu nodded, "Okay. Then I will go make dinner for the three of us, and perhaps even for Hoshi and Caralina." Ritsu left the room to the kitchen to make dinner, leaving Hatori alone in the room with his thoughts.

(Flashback, 13 years ago)

"Hato, Hato!" Hatori turned around to see Caralina walking over to him with Ammara in her arms, reaching out to him. He could feel the smile break through his distressed frown at the sight of the little two year old. He gently grabbed Ammara out of her Caralina's arms, feeling Ammara mess with the collar of his school uniform.

"She wanted to wish you good luck today before you go to school." Caralina told him with a bright smile. Hatori looked at Ammara, kissing the side of her head gently.

"Thank you, Ammara." He thanked her but she didn't answer him, she was messing with his collar, moving it from standing up right to pushing it back down, making her giggle.

"And I say good luck as well, Hatori. I know you have been studying all month in preparation for your exams." Hatori nodded.

"I'm also going to take my test soon for the medicinal field so I can help out when someone here gets sick." Caralina nodded in appreciation.

"You are too good for this world, Hatori. And I appreciate all you have down for me and Hoshi."

"Anytime."

"Hato, Hato!" Ammara placed her hand on his face, giving him puppy dog eyes. Hatori sighed with a chuckle, knowing what she wanted.

"Yes, I will bring you back your favorite gummies."

"Yay!" She cheered, wrapping her arms around Hatori in a loving hug. Hatori had no choice but to give Caralina back Ammara or else he would be late for school. He waved at the two as he left the Household, the smile on his face disappearing when he could no longer see little Ammara Sohma.

(Present)

Hatori left the sauna to his car, the blizzard outside no longer apparent, just a few flurries that fell on his head. He unlocked his car and climbed in, reaching in the back for the bag he meant to give to Akira earlier, but never got to when she ran from him. He exited the car, closing the car door and locking it before heading back inside.

He walked down the hall and stood in front of Akira's room, softly knocking on the wall beside the sliding door.

"Ritsu is making dinner for the three of us..." He told her softly, receiving no reply. Akira on the other side of the door was sat in front of it, staring at the floor with her arms crossed, she didn't want to speak to him, especially not now.

"I know that you are angry with me, but please, try to understand what I told you, alright." Akira didn't even flinch.

"Okay... Well, I will come get you when dinner is ready, think over it until then... And, I brought you something, something that I wanted to give to you earlier but... you know... Just, come get it when you want to, I will leave it here outside the door." Hatori placed the bag down on the ground before leaving her alone until dinner is ready.

Akira's POV

He is wrong.

They don't love me, they indeed loathe me. That's why they want to forget about me.

I can't believe I have become like this, all just because of him randomly showing up at the cafe, I ran, but he found me, why couldn't he just have left me there to die? Wouldn't it have been easier? Damn it, why does he have to make everything much harder than it should be.

What would happen if I did just... disappear?

I heard him speak to me, but his voice just went through one ear and out the other, I only listened to things that had to do with me, like coming to fetch me for dinner, and that he left me something outside the door.

I looked up, staring at the sliding door of the traditional japanese sauna house.

'What could he have left outside of the door? A bottle of water or something?' I asked myself internally, my curiosity enthralling me. I slowly stood up after a few seconds of debating, walking towards the door before getting on my knees. I slowly slid the door open, trying to keep quiet. In front of me was a plastic bag, most likely from some sort of convenience store. I grabbed it, briefly looking to the side to see if anyone was there. Just silence. I slid the door closed, turning around and criss crossing my legs. I grabbed the single item in the bag, pulling out a bag of Watermelon Gummies.

"Oh..." I turned it over, remembering how as a toddler... I would always ask him for these, up until I was five years old then I stopped because from eating them so much, I would get bad stomach aches. I opened the bad, the familiar strong scent hitting my senses. I grabbed one out of the bad and popped it into my mouth. I made a face, instantly spitting it out.

"Agh! That's pure sugar, how did I like these-" I stopped myself from speaking, instead grabbing another one and chewed it, swallowing it. I shrugged softly, 'I'm starving, I need at least something to hold me over.'.
