You know how in cartoons there are those characters who do something bad (for example, Tom and Jerry), but when they're caught, they try to look innocent and a little halo appears above their head? That basically sums up these students. Halos are the kids who everyone knows is a jerk or is doing something wrong, but yet the teachers think they're the sweetest things ever. They may do charity or community service just to get public attention, they try constantly to get on the teacher's good side, and getting scholarships and awards instead of other kids is like a fun competition to them. They may be the model student, but everyone knows them for the jerks they really are.
