Chapter 6
Somehow I got myself shepherded into a breastplate a size too large and a spear literally my height. Five seven.
Chiron stepped out in front of us.
"Aright, everyone. You know the rules. You get the flag and come back to base. No maiming, mauling, killing, or piercing. Now, pick your team!"
Alex and I got put on blue. We hefted our spears and waited for Chiron's whistle to break the air.
It did.
Alex and I were immediately shuffled back to guard blue's flag. We were on the younger end of the spectrum.
Immediately, Alex tugged on my arm.
"What, rainbow-face?" I teased.
"Shut up. So hey, I was thinking, if your luck-thing isn't a coincidence, then I think you go and charge ahead and get red's flag." she told me.
"What? No!"
"Just go and do it!" she yelled, pushing me through the thick crowd.
I stumbled and, going into panic mode, charged into the no-man's-land, hefting my spear in front of me.
Several kids marked with red feathers started trying to whack me and throw spears at me.
Miraculously, I dodged all of them. I started sprinting to where I thought all the red kids would be. My breastplate clanked and rose and fell with my motions.
So I thought, screw it.
I ripped off the chestplate and threw it to the ground. Kids looked at me like I was insane.
I darted past them, squeezing and elbowing through.
And there it was.
A red, silk flag, hanging from a tree branch.
A cloud of kids gathered around it, but that didn't matter.
A woman suddenly appeared in front of them. She dark skinned with silky black hair. Her eyes were dark.
But the odd thing was a periwinkle aura surrounding her. The white tunic-gown she wore bellowed out around her.
And she held a cornucopia in her arms.
A freaking cornucopia.
I mean, she disappeared as soon as I saw her. But I suddenly felt more sure.
The kids saw me. A boy with a red-feathered helm started charging me, brandishing a spear. I calmly waited.
He slowed down a bit with a confused expression.
Now this is going to sound cliche. Just a warning.
I threw out my open hand. The spear flew out of the boy's grip and into the air.
I advanced towards the dumbfounded kids. They all brandished their spears.
I don't know how to explain it. I just...walked in. Walked into a group of angry, hormonal teens with deadly weapons.
They tried to stab me, I mean, that was clear. But they couldn't. I slipped right through them.
I reached for the silk flag. No one stopped me.
I pulled it off the branch and slowly returned to our base. It was as if I'd stopped time.
Everyone stared at me. I held up the flag.
"Um... We won?"
