Chapter 4

See, we didn't find out in the span of time that 'about' normally warrants.

But after speeding over Maine, Connecticut, and most of New York, we neared the Long Island Sound.

Strawberry fields dotted the grassy area. At first, I couldn't see what this whole camp thing was until we descended closer. Then I saw the pavilion. Then the empty bonfire area, rimmed with log seats.

Then there were the cabins. About two dozen in the shape of a horseshoe. It swarmed with little orange dots.

The chariot lowered onto the grass. Woozily, I stepped out and put my feet on solid ground.

Butch girl thumped me on the back.

"Don't worry, you get used to the chariot." she said. Redhead laughed.

We walked to the main pavilion-which probably took longer than the flight. Butch girl had headed in a different place with the pegasi.

My legs were sore and the sun was dipping below the horizon-both an equation for a sleepy, nervous thirteen-year-old in an unfamiliar environment, half of a Texas-length from home.

We neared a wooden log cabin.

Alex groaned. Redhead elbowed her.

Suddenly, the door swung open. Redhead cheered.

He ran to the cabin door but suddenly ground to a stop.

A clopping of hooves was audible  from inside the cabin. Then a man emerged. Well, actually...

It hit me then. He was a centaur. His top half was man, and bottom half a dark chestnut horse.

"Chiron!" yelled Redhead.

The centaur paused.

"Murphy. I'm glad to see you with the new arrivals. Where is Cassandra?"

Redhead-no, Murphy, stiffened.

"She's down at the stables."

I looked at Alex. She was rubbing her temples with an expression of befuddlement.

Chiron eyed him suspiciously. Murphy's cheeks turned as red as his hair.

"Off you go, Murphy. Go tell the other campers to prepare for the arrival." The centaur said, waving him off. The fifteen-year old scampered off.

The centaur waved us in.

"Alexandra, Lillian-those are your names, correct?" he asked.

We nodded.

"Well, clearly you haven't quite the best impression of Camp Half Blood." he said, opening a mini-fridge with sodas in it.

"Coca-Cola or Pepsi?" He asked out of the blue.

"Um, Coke." Alex answered.

"Yeah-uh, Coke." I seconded. Chiron handed us cold cans of soda.

"So. Camp Half Blood." Alex said while I was gulping down the soft drink.

"Ah, yes. I know it sounds crazy, but-"

"Well, seems like we've been through crazy already." Alex interrupted.

"Yes, Alexandra. It sounds crazy, but first we need a lesson in Greek Mythology." Chiron said calmly.

"Greek mythology?" I asked. He nodded.

Suddenly something clicked in my head. Pegasi, centaurs, and demigods.

"Greek gods exist, don't they," I asked, already knowing the answer.

"Smart one. Yes, they do. In fact, Mount Olympus resides over the Empire State Building."

"Damn New York, always soaking up the spotlight." Alex muttered.

"Alexandra, I'd like to inform you that Maine houses some of the Canadian Native American gods." Chiron informed her. "Anyway, since it seems you have caught on, I'll introduce you to Camp Half Blood now. So. This place is a safe haven for demigods. Our boundaries are protected by magic to only let demigods in."

"Demigods." I repeated. Chiron sighed.

"Yes, demigods. Which means both of you are the daughters of a god or goddess of Olympus. Alexandra, judging by your middle name, I'd say Iris. Lillian, I'm not so sure. But, we will find out at dinner tonight, or maybe tomorrow. Meanwhile, a game of capture-the-flag should warm you up."

Chiron rose, gesturing for us to leave.

"Wait, but-"

"Just follow me."
