In a matter of six hours, Katherine's life had changed.
729 days after the incident, she still wasn't accustomed to the thought the boy she had loved had done something she thought he was incapable of.
The date terrified her: October 23. Yet, she stood in front of the calendar, attempting to muster the strength to cross out the date with the number '22' in its box. To her, crossing it out meant she was just one step closer to making it to two years since she was blatantly welcomed with the news that Jack had murdered someone.
The worst part of it, however, was that she was the reporter assigned to write the article.
However, that wasn't the only event in that time period. A month after Jack was arrested, Katherine found out she was pregnant. Now, at sixteen months old, Noah was her biggest comfort.
Katherine inhaled deeply, crossing out the date and turning away, not wanting to face the calendar anymore. She faced the mess of her living room, littered with papers and Noah's items.
Working long shifts six days a week proved to be a challenge, despite the fact that her parents were always there to help. Katherine didn't want that, though. What she wanted was responsibility. Everything leading up to the present could be blamed on her, so she felt that the least she could do was be responsible for her mistakes. Even despite how much people like Davey and Crutchie told her it wasn't her fault, she couldn't believe them. Katherine blamed herself.
She leaned down, gathering papers and setting them on her desk before heaving a deep breath. Times were rough at the moment with Noah growing older and smarter every day, but needing her care and attention 24/7. He was well worth the nine hours of labor it took to have him, but she felt herself getting much older before her time because of her mothering him.
Four knocks at the door caught her attention, and she set the papers down beside her typewriter, going to answer the door. She opened it, finding Davey standing in front of her.
"Davey," she greeted, surprise evident in her voice. "What are you doing here?"
"I may have found something," Davey said, stepping into the apartment and sitting down on the couch. He sifted through the papers in his hands, setting three down on the coffee table. Katherine sat beside him, her eyes falling on the papers.
"Jack?" She asked quietly, attempting to hide the trembling of her voice.
Davey nodded. "They've finally allowed me to see his documents. It appears he's jumped from location to location." He pointed to one document dated for November 1899. "He was first sent to stay here in New York City, but in March he was transferred to Buffalo. I don't know if he's still there, but I highly doubt it. If they moved him after four months, then it's very likely they've moved him again."
Katherine hugged her arms, stifling the shaking of her fingers. "How did you find this out?"
Davey sighed, pulling out another piece of paper from his files and setting it in front of Katherine. She reached a single hand out, taking it and holding it in front of her so she could inspect it. The more she read of it, the more wide her eyes got. "Y-You're becoming his lawyer?"
"My professors think it'll suit me well to find a client," Davey said quietly. "Jack was the first person to came to mind."
"Two birds with one stone," Katherine breathed, setting the paper down and running a hand through her hair. "What about the lawyer he had?"
"He dropped him last month. Figured his case was closed and there was no hope left for it." Davey paused. "I'm hoping to find some new evidence to shorten his sentence."
"Evidence?" Katherine echoed. "Davey, they found all the evidence they could. Jack was there; he's guilty." She stood, feeling her face flush with heat at the memory of it.
"Yes, I know he's guilty," Davey responded, filtering through his papers. "But there's a point in trying, isn't there?"
Katherine inhaled sharply. "Is there? I can't seem to find the reason."
Davey stood, sensing a new shift of thoughts in Katherine's mind. "You're afraid of showing weakness aren't you?"
Katherine turned to face him, fighting back the heat in her face. "Is that so bad for me to fear?"
"Not entirely."
Katherine pinched the bridge of her nose, "I have Noah to look after now. I can't afford to let him think that he isn't safe, even if he is so young."
Davey exhaled softly, stepping forward and placing a hand tenderly on her shoulder. "There's nothing wrong with wanting to appear strong, but you can't appear strong without weakness to compare it to. Everyone has seen your strength, but we have yet to see your weakness."
Katherine sucked in a shaky breath, turning her chin. "In a way, I'm not even sure I want to know where Jack is; I don't want to see his face. I've already had two for the past sixteen months."
Davey nodded. "I can understand that." He sighed softly, drawing his hand away. "I'll leave you alone, and I'll leave the documents. I have a copy at my place. Take some time, Katherine. Not just for the boys, and not just for Noah, but for yourself. With all you've been through, it's the first thing you need."
