Chapter One

The sky was a dark shade of navy blue, the stars sprinkled over it like powdered sugar and the moon like a bright golden button. The forest created an eerie and haunted feeling, it's shadows almost ghostly. The tree branches swayed gently in the wind, only their creaking could be heard in the quiet night. The dirt path cut through the thick foliage, rocks and sticks dotted the area. A faint glow pierced the darkness that surrounded the hikers, their footsteps breaking the eerie silence as they followed the dirt path.

You followed your four friends up the mountain, your legs were sore from walking over rocks for a few hours straight. You were with your friends, Mia, Henry, James and William. They were a few feet ahead of you, one by one jumping over a large log in the way of the path you were following. The path had inclined and was now steeper, you increased your stride as your backpack threatened to pull you back thanks to gravity.

Henry and James were in the lead, their matching bright red puffy jackets stood out in the dark setting of the forest. Mia had slowed down to match your pace, since she was your best friend. "You okay?" her voice soft, almost concerned as she reached into the pocket of her light blue puffy jacket and pulled out your inhaler. You shook your head and smiled, wiping a stray strand of your (h/c) hair out of your face as you did so. William also slowed down so he was on your right side while Mia was on the left, "What's wrong? Asthma gettin' ya?" his sort of high voice shook as a cold wind blew in his face. Again you shook your head, "I'm fine guys. Just getting tired that's all." your warm smile helped calm them as you continued on your way. After about five minutes you, Mia, and William caught up to James and Henry.

William zipped up his black puffy jacket, his backpack hung low, his dark brown curly hair blocked his brown eyes and dark skin. James and Henry looked the same, their matching black scruffy hair, dark hazel eyes, and tan skin glowed in the bright moonlight. Mia had her long blonde hair in a low ponytail, her dark green eyes reflected the stars, and her pale skin barely noticeable under her warm clothing. You let your (h/c) hair flow free, your (f/c) jacket not as warm and puffy as your friends.

You sighed, James had stopped to check where we were on the map, while Henry started to set up a temporary camp. "James? Why did we stop? Are we lost?" you asked him, he looked up from his map and looked at you annoyed. He groaned, "Look, (y/n)... I can't focus on finding where we are if you are asking me questions." he snapped at you. You jerked your head back in surprise at his tone, "SOR-RY!!" you called back with sarcasm. Henry looked up as he started a fire, but didn't stop working before he shook his head and went back to focusing on the fire. Mia and William had disappeared, probably making out somewhere no one could see. But you just shrugged and stood there looking out into the forest where the path stopped.

"(Y/n)!" James' voice startled you, causing you to look in his direction as he waved you over to him. You grabbed your backpack straps and walked over to him, "What?" you asked a bit annoyed. He sighed, "Just past those trees is where the kids disappeared years ago. Henry and I are gonna go check it out, and until we are back you are in charge." he tilted his head down asking if you understood. You rolled your eyes, not fond of the idea of them wandering off alone, "Okay. Whatever, just don't go dying like those other kids. I don't want to have to tell Maria that her precious boyfriend disappeared." you emphasized 'boyfriend' to get your point through. James glared at you with narrowed eyes before turning around and stalking away.

Henry came up to you, his eyes gleamed and an eyebrow raised, his smirk was enough to piss you off though. When he was about ten inches from you he grabbed your waist, "Don't worry baby. I won't die without you." his evil smirk made you even more mad at him. You quickly pried his hands off your waist and shoved him away, you scoffed at his words and turned around so your back faced him. Henry had always been too flirtly with you, and it annoyed you that he still did it even when his brother was around. But you were thankful when you heard his footsteps retreat after his brother, and your posture softened a little.

Mia and William came back from wherever they had been, and you noticed Mia looked happier than she was twenty minutes ago. "Had a fun time Mia?" you taunted her with a playful smirk, she giggled and nodded as William blushed. You laughed loudly and had to bend over since you were out of breath all of a sudden. Mia walked over to you and handed you your red and white inhaler, she looked at you with sympathy and waited for you to use the medicine. You held the inhaler up to your mouth, used one puff, held your breath about ten seconds and breathed out, before handing the little doohickey back to your friend.

It had been fifteen minutes since Henry and James went on ahead, the fire they left was slowly dying and you began to wonder where they were. You paced back and forth behind William and Mia who were sitting on a log next to the burning embers. "I-I can't wait any longer! We have to go find them! It's been too long! What if they are hurt?!" you started rambling on, you hadn't noticed Mia get up and come over to you until you felt her hand on your left shoulder. You stopped pacing and looked into her round eyes, "It's okay. Let's go find them." she nodded slowly to let you process what she said. William held his head in his hands, he looked skeptical about the situation but sighed after a moment. He got up from where he sat and walked over to you two girls, "Let's go." he finally spoke and waited for you to answer. All you did was nod as you led the way into the dark forest where you last saw Henry and James.

You were paranoid by this point, every sound you heard made you jump, even the crack of a twig. William and Mia were calling for Henry and James, but no response ever came as you continued walking through the dense foliage. The moon was starting to crawl down the sky as it's color changed to a red and orange and pink. The stars faded and the sky grew brighter, soon lighting up the forest, showing you what lay ahead for miles. What you didn't expect was to trip on a tree root. Your boot got stuck and caused you to fly forward, you tensed up and readied for the impact of face to hard earth, but it never came.

Your screams echoed as you felt yourself fall, and soon after you tripped you heard William and Mia screaming also. Without warning, and without opening your eyes, you felt the hard impact of the ground and your body, making a loud thump sound and sending a wave of pain through you. You heard William and Mia hit the ground beside you as your consciousness faded and you were left in an empty black void. You could feel the pain rush through your weak limbs and the rest of your body as you let yourself drift from the painful reality.

How did you like the first chapter of the book? I hope it's different from the other books you have read. I will try to make the book chapters a little longer, I just tend to go fast in stories. If you have any suggestions or questions just comment!
