Chapter 9 ~ Moody's First Lesson

I started speeding up my pace so I could see Cedric and tell him what I saw. Seeing Igor going into the Great Hall where the Goblet of Fire was made it obvious that he was up to something. And that meant something bad was going to happen. To top it all off, it was probably going to happen to me.

I took out the map to see if Cedric was on it anywhere. I saw him walking towards our meeting spot, then he stopped. I started walking again and saw him standing there, looking around. I walked up to him and took off the cloak. It scared the shit out of him.

"What the hell, Max! You trying to give me a heart attack?!"

"Sorry, but didn't they make you Head Boy for a reason?"

"Hey, I still get scared at times."

I laughed, then gave him a peck on the lips. "So are you going to enter your name for that tournament?" I asked.

"I don't know yet. It seems dangerous. But I'm willing to take that risk." He looked at me. "Would you enter? You know, if you were old enough?"

"No," I scoffed. "I'd die in a heartbeat. It's not even something I want to do, anyway. Besides, what I just saw back there would've changed my mind about putting my name in there."

Cedric looked confused. "What did you see?"

"You know the headmaster of Durmstrang? The creepy looking guy that came in with Viktor Krum?" He nodded. "Well, just now, I saw him go into the Great Hall. That's where the Goblet is at."

Cedric was still trying to think about what to say next. "Sounds like he's up to something,"

"Well, duh! What else would he be doing?!" I hit his arm, then continued. "Seriously, I think he's trying to mess with the goblet. I bet he wants Viktor to be the Durmstrang champion."

"Of course he wants Viktor to be the Durmstrang champion! Everyone at that school practically worships that guy."

"So does Ron," I added.

We both laughed and then he kissed me. The kiss was longer than the peck I gave him when I approached him. I started to kiss him back until we both heard a noise. I threw the cloak over my head and Cedric was acting like he was patrolling the hallway. I looked to see who it was that was coming. It was the girl that Harry was staring at on the train. Apparently, she was one of the Ravenclaw Prefects.

"Hey, Cedric." She smiled at him.

"Hey, Cho," he replied. So that was her name.

"You know who I am, right?" she asked. "Cho Chang? One of Ravenclaw's Prefects?"

"Of course I know who you are." Cedric smiled. "I saw you on the train. In fact, I think you were staring at me."

She smiled, trying to hide her red cheeks. "I didn't think you noticed."

"Well, I did." He smiled back at her again.

My mouth dropped. Was he really flirting with her? Why the hell would he do that? Was he trying to make me jealous? If he was, it wasn't working! Just kidding, it was working, and it made me mad.

"So we should talk more sometime." She smiled again.

"Sure. Can you patrol around the Charms classroom now?"

"Okay, see you around." Cho waved goodbye and walked away from him. Cedric sighed and started looking around for me. I waited until his back was facing me, then I popped out and hit his arm.

"Ow!" Cedric cried, then turned around, rubbing his arm. "What was that for?!"

"For flirting with that girl! What was the point of doing that?!"

"I wasn't flirting with her! I was just being nice, that's all. Calm down, Max. I like you." He grabbed me by the waist and leaned in to kiss me.

But I put my hand over his mouth and looked at him. "Are you patrolling tomorrow night?" He nodded. "You'll get your kiss then. Where are you going to be?"

He grabbed my hand so he could reply. "By the Slytherin Dungeon."

Great. The last place I wanted to go. "I'll meet you there tomorrow night."

"Okay. But can I still get a goodnight kiss from you?" He gave me those puppy dog eyes.

"Hey! Only I can do that!" I protested. He laughed at me as I put the cloak back on and started walking away from him.

"I'll see you tomorrow night!" he called out. I smiled to myself and kept on walking.

I didn't want to believe that he was flirting with Cho, but the way he was smiling at her made my insides burn up. I couldn't say I hated her since I hardly knew her.

I walked into the Gryffindor Common Room and found Harry on the couch, sleeping. He waited up for me. I took the cloak off of me and gently tapped Harry on the shoulder. His eyes opened up slowly and he turned around, facing me. He gave me an awkward smile. "You're back."

"Did you wait up for me?" I asked.

He nodded, "I got worried. Plus, I couldn't sleep. I had that dream again."

I sat beside him and stared into the fire. "I got information on that girl you saw on the train."

"You did?"

"Yup. Her name's Cho Chang, she's a fifth year, and she's a Ravenclaw Prefect."

Harry nodded. "Anything else?"

"Yeah, she's a man-stealer," I added.

Harry chuckled. "And what makes you say that?"

"Because she was all over Cedric tonight. She needs to back away from him." I crossed my arms and let out a sigh.

"Don't worry about it, Max. We have bigger problems to worry about."

"Like Igor sneaking into the Great Hall tonight?" I said.

Harry put his arm around me and looked at me. "What are you talking about?"

"I went to meet Cedric by the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom and to get there I have to pass the Great Hall. On the way there, I saw Igor go in there and he closed the doors behind him. That's where the goblet is located. I'm worried he's going to mess with it."

Harry sighed and pulled me closer to him. I rested my head on his shoulder and he rested his head on mine. "I can't believe that man wanted you for himself."

"It wasn't him. It was the other guy that wanted me," I corrected him. "Igor was just standing there, not saying anything."

Harry didn't respond. Instead, he just looked into the fire. After a couple of minutes, he spoke again. "I love you, Max. You know that?"

"I love you, too, Harry," I replied, then yawned.

"Goodnight, Max," Harry said before he fell asleep again.

"Goodnight, Harry," was the last thing I said to him before drifting off to sleep as well.

*******

"Alastor Moody," our new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher started at the beginning of class the next morning. "Ex-Auror." He began to write on the board. "Ministry malcontent, and your new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher.

"I am here because Dumbledore asked me. End of story, goodbye, the end! Any questions?" The room was silent. So he continued. "When it comes to the Dark Arts, I believe in a practical approach. But first, which of you can tell me how many Unforgivable Curses there are?"

The first to speak was Hermione. "Three, sir."

"And they are so named?" Moody asked. He started writing on the board again.

"Because they are unforgivable. The use of any one of them will--"

"Will earn you a one-way ticket to Azkaban, correct," he finished for her. "The Ministry says you're too young to see what these curses do. I say different! You need to know what you're up against! You need to be prepared! You need to find another place to put your chewing gum besides the underside of your desk, Mr. Finnigan!"

We all looked back to see Seamus. "No way. The old codger can see out the back of his head," I heard him whisper.

Moody threw a piece of chalk at him. "And hear across classrooms!" After he calmed down a little, he continued. "So which curse shall we see first?" It didn't take him long to pick the student that he could intimidate the most. "Weasley!"

"Yes?" Ron asked. The poor boy was terrified.

"Stand!" he ordered. Ron stood up slowly and looked at him. "Give us a curse."

"Well, my father did tell me about one. The Imperius Curse," Ron answered.

Moody nodded at his answer. "Oh, yeah, your father would know all about that. Gave the Ministry quite a bit of grief a few years ago. Perhaps this will show you why."

I looked at Hermione and she had a worried look on her face. She obviously knew what the curse did. And she didn't like it. Moody went over to a table and grabbed a spider. He placed the spider in his hand and pointed his wand at the creature. "Engorgio," he said, which made the spider bigger. "Imperio!" Soon, he started controlling the spider. It first landed on Neville and Dean's desk.

"Hermione, is he controlling that spider?" I whispered.

She nodded in response. "Out of all of the curses, this one is the second less painful one."

We both knew which curse was the least painful out of all of them. It was the same curse that Harry and I survived. Moody was still controlling the spider. He decided to put it on Crabbe's big head. Crabbe was whimpering, looking for the spider.

"Don't worry. It's completely harmless," Moody informed us. Then he moved the spider onto Padma's hand. Both of the twins were freaking out. Then he moved the spider right above Ron's head, and we all knew how he felt about spiders.

"If she bites, she's lethal." Moody started laughing. The spider was now on Ron's face. Poor Ron was about to faint.

But here was the best part. Moody looked at Malfoy and placed the spider on his nose. Malfoy was hitting Goyle, telling him to get it off. Harry was clapping and I was about to die from laughter myself.

That was until Moody looked at me. "What are you laughing at?" he asked me before putting the spider on me. Hermione looked scared and backed away from me.

I almost screamed bloody murder, but I kept my mouth shut. It was crawling up my neck and I was tempted to squish it. The whole class was laughing at me.

Moody kept on laughing as well. "Talented, isn't she? What should I have her do next? Jump out the window?" The spider flew to the window and hit herself hard. I thought the thing was dead. The class went silent. "Drown herself?" He put the spider over a bucket of water and the thing was trying so hard not to go in it. Finally, he got the spider and put it back into his hand.

"Scores of witches and wizards have claimed that they only did You-Know-Who's bidding under the influence of the Imperius Curse. But here's the rub: How do we sort out the liars? Another, another." Everyone raised their hands to answer, but I knew who his next target was. It was Neville. He was just as bad as Ron. "Longbottom, is it?"

Neville just looked at him, but then stood up. "Yes, sir," he replied.

"Professor Sprout tells me you have an aptitude for Herbology."

Neville nodded quickly, then gave him an answer.  "There's the...the Cruciatus Curse."

Moody got excited when he heard that answer. "Correct! Correct! Come, come." He led him over to the table, where the spider was at. Oh, shit. This was not going to end well. Especially for poor Neville. "Crucio!" The spider started squealing like a dying horse. It looked like the creature was in pain.

Neville looked like he was in pain, too. The poor boy was trying so hard not to look at the spider. I looked at Hermione, who had that scared look on her face again. She looked like she was about to cry.

But finally, she had enough. "STOP IT! CAN'T YOU SEE IT'S BOTHERING HIM, STOP IT!" she yelled.

Moody looked at Hermione, then looked at Neville and finally stopped. Neville didn't move at all as Moody brought the spider to us and placed it on her book. He stood in front of Hermione and cleared his throat. "Perhaps you could give us the last Unforgivable Curse, Miss Granger?" She took one glance at him, then shook her head. I saw a few tears forming at the corners of her eyes.

Moody looked at her once again, then looked at the spider. "Avada Kedavra!" A tiny ball of green light shot out from the end of his wand and killed the spider instantly.

I glanced at Harry, who just looked at the dead thing. I kind of winced a little.

"The Killing Curse," Moody said to the class. "Only two people are known to have survived it. And they're both sitting in this room."

I looked away, not wanting the extra attention. Of course, he looked right at me and I slowly turned to look back at him. He looked at my hand and started brushing his fingers against the desk. Then he went over to Harry and took a glance at him. He took out that bottle and started drinking from it again.

After class was dismissed, I started to wonder why he did that. The way he was looking at me reminded me of that creepy guy that wanted to take me back with him. For a second, I thought Moody was the same person.
