Chapter 11 ~ The Champions

The next night, the champions for the tournament were going to be chosen. I was hoping that Cedric wasn't chosen to be the Hogwarts champion. It scared me that if he was, then I would never see him again. People died in the tournament. I didn't want that to happen to him.

Everyone came to the Great Hall to see who our champions were. We all sat at a table, talking, and laughing. Of course, I sat with the Gryffindors. Who else would I sit with? Oh, wait, no one.

Dumbledore told everyone to sit down and all the students did as they were told. "The moment you've all been waiting for: The champion selection!"

I looked over at Cedric and he didn't see me at all. I looked back at Dumbledore, who was doing something that looked like some sort of spell. He looked at the goblet and it turned into a fiery red. A piece of paper flew out and Dumbledore caught it. He opened it up and read it.

"The Durmstrang champion, Viktor Krum!" he announced. Durmstrang and the Slytherin table cheered the loudest out of everyone in the room. Viktor got up, shook Dumbledore's hand, and left the Great Hall.

Another piece of paper came out of the goblet and Dumbledore read the name on it. "The champion for Beauxbatons, Fleur Delacour!"

The Beauxbatons girls and the Ravenclaw table started cheering for Fleur as she walked over to Dumbledore, shook his hand as well, and left the Great Hall. There was only the Hogwarts champion left. I started holding Harry's hand tightly. He knew what was wrong when he saw me shaking.

"It's going to be fine," he whispered.

I nodded in response. "I know. But I really don't want him to be chosen."

The last piece of paper came flying out and into Dumbledore's grasp once again. This was it. Who was the Hogwarts champion?

"The Hogwarts champion, Cedric Diggory!"

My heart dropped. After getting pats on the back by his friends, he looked back at me. I looked at him with sadness and his smile almost went away.

"Excellent! We now have our three champions! But in the end, only one will go down in history. Only one will hoist this chalice of champions, this vessel of victory, the Triwizard Cup!" He pointed at the ginormous cup on the table and everyone started cheering.

All of a sudden, the goblet started doing something weird. The fire inside was going crazy. I glanced over at Igor, who did not look happy. Another piece of paper came flying out and started falling down slowly. Dumbledore caught it and looked over what was on the paper.

"Harry and Maxine Potter." Some people heard him mutter under his breath. I didn't believe them. Probably making it up. "Harry and Maxine Potter?"

Oh, crap. He did say our names. Everyone was looking at us and we both tried to hide, but it was no use. Hagrid was shaking his head in disbelief.

"HARRY AND MAXINE POTTER!" Dumbledore yelled, making the entire Great Hall echo.

"Go on, you two. Just go!" Hermione pushed us out in the center of the hall and we started walking towards Dumbledore slowly. We looked at him and I knew that he was puzzled. He gave us the piece of paper and sure enough it had our names up there, big and bold:

Harry and Maxine Potter.

Everyone was whispering stuff around us. They weren't nice things, either.

"They're both cheats!"

"Neither of them are even seventeen yet!"

I glanced over at Malfoy, who was giving me the death glare. We walked past Snape and he looked confused in a way. The other teachers just looked at us. Igor glared at me. He recognized me from this past summer. Moody just gave me the creeps with his eye.

As soon as we walked out of the Great Hall, Harry spoke up. "How the hell did our names get put in there?"

"I don't know! I didn't put our names in there and neither did you. I would never do something stupid like that. What are we going to do?"

"I don't know yet, Max. We'll just have to wait and see what Dumbledore says."

Harry and I went down a staircase and through a gate that led us inside a big room with shiny and loud things hanging everywhere. We walked over toward the other three and they looked at us, confused. Cedric gave me a confused look. Suddenly, we heard yelling coming from the staircase. It was Dumbledore, followed by Moody, Madame Maxime, Moody, Mr. Crouch, Snape, McGonagall, and Igor.

Dumbledore pushed Harry back against a cabinet and Snape pushed me against the cabinet as well. "Did you two put your name in the Goblet of Fire?!"

"No, sir!" we said at the same time.

"Did you ask one of the older students to do it for you?!"

"No, sir!"

"You're absolutely sure?!"

"Yes, sir!" They both let us go and we both sighed in relief.

"Of course they're lying!" Madame Maxime shouted.

"The hell they are!" Moody cut in. "The Goblet of Fire is an exceptionally powerful magical object. Only an exceptionally powerful Confundus Charm could have hoodwinked it! Magic way beyond the talents of two fourth years!"

But then, Igor got into the argument. "You seem to have given this a fair bit of thought, Mad-Eye!"

"It was once my job to think as dark wizards do, Karkaroff, perhaps you remember," Moody retorted.

"This doesn't help, Alastor!" Dumbledore informed him.

I cleared my throat and everyone looked at me. "Okay, Harry and I didn't put our names in the Goblet of Fire. We were there last night, watching everyone else put their names in there." Harry nodded in agreement.

"It's true, sir," Cedric added. "I saw them there last night. Neither of them put their names in there."

"Thank you for that. But now, I leave this to you, Barty." Dumbledore looked at Barty, who had the answer, and it didn't look like a good answer to me.

He sighed, then started. "The rules are absolute. The Goblet of Fire constitutes a binding magical contract." He looked over at Harry and I. "The Potters have no choice. They are, as of tonight, Triwizard champions."

No. This wasn't right. I didn't want this. Harry didn't want this. It wasn't fair! If Harry died during the tournament, I would never forgive myself.

"However," Mr. Crouch started again. "Since their names appeared on one piece of paper, they are considered as the fourth champion together, and are allowed to work together."

We looked at each other, then back at the teachers. There was nothing left to say other than bidding us good night. Viktor, Fleur, Cedric, Harry, and I started to head back to our dorms. Viktor went back to the Slytherin Dungeon and Fleur went to the Ravenclaw Tower. Harry looked at me and I nodded at him, signaling to him that I wanted to be alone with Cedric. Harry started walking ahead of us, leaving me and Cedric alone. We stopped walking and waited until it was quiet. That was when I finally broke down and burst into tears.

Cedric pulled me in for a hug and started stroking my hair. I was crying on his shoulder, letting the tears fall out. "It's going to be okay, Max," he whispered in my ear.

I pulled away, shaking my head, and trying to wipe the tears off my face. "I can't do this tournament, Cedric. Neither of us want to do this. If you or Harry die out there, I'll never forgive myself. Even if I die--"

"Max, look at me." I looked up at him. "We're not gonna die. Nobody is going to die in this tournament. You are strong. You were put in Gryffindor for a reason."

"Yeah, only because I asked to be put in there," I told him.

"You and Harry are fighters. If you two work together, I know you'll win this. Believe me, I know."

I gave him a weak smile and let him wipe the rest of the tears off my face. He leaned in for a kiss and I leaned in as well, letting his lips press against mine. After a few seconds I pulled away. "I'm sorry I didn't meet you last night. I wasn't feeling well." I felt the guilt hit me in the stomach when I said that to him.

"It's okay." He paused, then sighed. "Well, I guess we should head back."

"Yeah. I'll see you tomorrow."

"Okay. See you then." He gave me a peck on the lips and walked away. He looked back and smiled. I gave him a wave, then started walking back towards the Gryffindor Tower. But as soon as I cut the first corner, Malfoy was leaning against the wall, glaring at me.

"Do you like to wait until I'm alone to see me? How thoughtful of you," I said sarcastically.

"How the hell did you and your idiot brother put your names in the goblet?" he spat out, ignoring my comment.

"Look, we didn't put our names in there. I didn't want to compete in this stupid tournament, anyway."

"Oh, please. I know you two want every second of fame. You're both Potters. You get everything handed to you and getting your name in the Goblet of Fire there is one of them."

I shot a glare his way. "You need to get your head out of your arse and keep your mouth shut. Fame is the last thing we want. Seeing and hearing our names everywhere is something that we don't like. You don't know what it's like to have people talk about you in many ways. So please, leave me and my brother alone."

I shoved him out of the way and walked away from him. I calmed down after I got to the Fat Lady. Harry was sitting on the couch and turned around once he saw me come through the portal.

I plopped down beside him and huffed a sigh. He looked at me, knowing that something was up. "You okay?"

I looked at him and just shook my head and chuckled. "Malfoy just loves to give me a hard time whenever he gets the chance. It's getting old, you know?"

Harry chuckled and looked back at the fire. We sat there in silence until we heard footsteps. We turned around and saw Ron standing there.

"So how did you do it?" We looked at him, confused. "Actually, don't answer that. Doesn't matter. Might've let your best friend know, though."

"Let you know what?" Harry asked him.

"You know bloody well what," he replied in a harsh tone.

"We didn't ask for this to happen, Ron," I told him. He just looked at me, not saying anything. I scoffed and got up from where I was sitting. I walked around the couch, standing on the other side of the Gryffindor Common Room. "You're being stupid."

"Yeah, that's me," he said. "Ron Weasley, the stupid friend."

This time, Harry got up and stood beside me. "We didn't put our names in that cup. We don't want eternal glory. We just want to be..." Harry trailed off.

"Look, we don't know what happened tonight and neither of us know why. It just did. Okay?" Ron looked at us again and didn't say a word. I sighed and went back to my place on the couch. Harry followed behind and sat beside me again. We heard Ron go back up the stairs. But before he was gone, we heard him say something to us.

"Piss off, you two." With that, he went back up to bed, leaving Harry and I alone again.

"Don't worry. He'll come around," Harry said.

"I know. He always does," I replied.

In a matter of minutes, we drifted off to sleep.
