Chapter 10 ~ An Unforgettable Encounter
After that interesting Defense Against the Dark Arts lesson, I was officially creeped out. Chills went down my back as I left the classroom. Professor Moody was creepy, especially with that eye. It scared the shit out of me every time I looked at it. Of course, I was going to talk to Cedric about it tonight. Or maybe later today, if I ever got the chance. Either way, I had to talk to him about this.
"Brilliant, isn't he?" Ron stated as we were heading down the spiral staircase. "Completely demented, of course, and terrifying to be in the same room with. But he's really been there, you know? He's looked evil in the eye."
"There's a reason those curses are unforgivable," Hermione told him. "To perform them in a classroom. I mean, did you see Neville's face?" I nudged Hermione and pointed out that Neville was standing right there, looking out the window. He looked sad. Poor boy. Hermione was trying to see what he was looking at. "Neville?" she asked carefully.
Moody pushed us out of the way and touched his shoulder. "Son?" Neville turned around to look at him. "You all right?" Neville nodded in response and turned back at the window. "Come on. We'll have a cup of tea. I want to show you something." Neville reluctantly followed him back up the stairs. The four of us looked at each other and continued our way down.
"Such a shame. I was hoping he would torture both of you," Malfoy said from behind us. It was obvious that he was talking about me and Harry.
"Always thinking about us, aren't you, Malfoy? Don't you have other things to do rather than torment us every chance you get? Just stop stalking us, really." Everyone snickered around me.
"But tormenting you is what I do best, if you know what I mean." He smirked.
Was he really trying to get in trouble with Dumbledore and his father? "I suggest you keep your mouth shut, Malfoy," Harry spoke up. "Nobody cares."
"Watch it, Potter! This is between me and your stupid sister," Malfoy snapped at my brother.
I looked at Harry with pleading eyes, begging him not to get into a fight with him. Harry glared at him one more time, then Malfoy looked at me. He just stared at me, then walked off with his crew following behind him.
"I hate him," he said.
"He's not worth it, Harry," I said to him. "He really isn't."
Harry looked at me, then started following Hermione down the stairs. I sighed and looked down at Malfoy, who looked back up at me. I knew there was some good in him. But I wasn't going to tell Harry that.
*******
Nothing else happened except for the usual. We went to our classes, did homework, and hung out in the Gryffindor Common Room. We all decided to go to the Great Hall, where everyone was going to see who was going to put their name into the Goblet of Fire. Cedric was probably going, but I knew I couldn't talk to him while his friends were around. They would know about us.
Ron, Harry, and I were standing around the goblet while Hermione sat down on a bench, reading a book. I didn't see Cedric yet, and I hoped that I didn't miss him. I was scared that he was going to put his name in the goblet. If he did, I was worried that his name would be picked out.
We heard yelling coming from the entrance and it was Cedric and all of his friends. They all pushed him through the circle, yelling at him to put his name in there.
"Come on, Cedric! Put your name in!" one yelled.
He looked at the goblet and hesitated before putting his name into the blue flames. My heart dropped as everyone applauded. He smiled as he looked at me, giving me a wink. I smiled back. Of course, he went to a circle with all his friends. I was worried about this tournament, from what Dumbledore said during the feast, and it made me worry about Cedric if he was chosen to compete.
"How did you manage to get him to ask you out?" Ron asked.
"I just have that charm," I replied.
Ron looked at the both of us and then back up at the goblet. "Eternal glory. Be brilliant, wouldn't it? Three years from now, when we're old enough to be chosen."
"Yeah, rather you than me," Harry said.
"Eternal glory is the last thing I want," I added.
Our conversation was interrupted by yelling coming from the entrance. The twins came running in with a vial in their hands and high-fiving everyone. "Well, lads, we've done it."
"Cooked it up just this morning."
Hermione had a smirk on her face, knowing that whatever they were planning to do wasn't going to work. "It's not going to worrrk," she said in a singsong voice.
The twins went to both sides of her and down got to her level. "Oh, yeah?"
"And why is that, Granger?"
She pointed at the blue circle that surrounded the goblet. "You see this? This is an Age Line. Dumbledore drew it himself." She rolled her eyes at both of them.
"So?" they asked at the same time.
"Did they just question Hermione Granger?" I whispered to Harry.
"It seems to appear that way," he whispered back.
Hermione scoffed and slammed her book shut. "So? A genius like Dumbledore couldn't possibly be fooled by a dodge as pathetically dim-witted as an Aging Potion."
"But that's why it's so brilliant," Fred said.
"Because it's so pathetically dim-witted," George finished. The three of us raised our eyebrows at each other.
"Ready, Fred?"
"Ready, George."
"Bottoms up!" They drank the potion and jumped over the line.
Everyone started clapping and cheering. I just shook my head at them and started clapping. Then they put their names into the fire and everyone started cheering again. Then, the twins were thrown back and fell on the ground with a thud! When they sat up, they looked like old men and everyone started laughing at them.
"You said!"
"You said!"
The two started fighting on the ground and everyone started cheering and laughing at them. Those two really knew how to make my day. Hermione didn't seem to give a crap and went back to her book. It suddenly got quiet when Viktor Krum and Igor came in. They looked serious. His eyes were on the Goblet of Fire and nothing else. Hermione even stopped reading to take a glimpse at him. He placed his name into the flames and looked at Hermione. I saw her smile a little bit.
Igor didn't take his eyes off of me. He recognized me from this summer. He had to know that it was me. Once Viktor left, he followed him out of the Great Hall.
Ron looked at me, confused. "What was that all about? Why was he looking at you?"
"I have no idea, Ron," I lied. "No idea at all."

I grabbed the cloak and the map from under my bed and hid them under my shirt. I was certain Harry was going to stop me for sure so he could ask me about what happened earlier this evening. To my surprise, he wasn't down there. I ran out of the portal and placed the cloak over me. I muttered the spell to make everything on the map visible. I looked it over and headed my way to the Slytherin Dungeon.
It felt like hours walking all the way to the other side of the school. Once I finally got there, I took a break from walking and sat against the wall with the cloak still over me. While I was sitting, I heard footsteps and talking coming from the corner. I quickly stood up and made sure the cloak was still over my head. I stood there quietly and waited to see who was about to come around the corner. It was Malfoy, Crabbe, and Goyle.
"Can you believe this tournament?" Malfoy said. "So stupid. Who would want to participate in it, anyway? It's just a death wish for anyone over the age of seventeen."
"I wonder what would happen if the Potter twins were chosen to compete. They'd probably die in a heartbeat," Crabbe and Goyle laughed.
"It depends on which twin you're talking about, Goyle," Malfoy told him. "Of course, Harry Potter wouldn't survive. He's weak. But the other Potter would have a chance."
"How? She's weak, too. She wouldn't survive. Not without her brother," Crabbe informed him.
"You don't know her like I do, Crabbe. If it was between her and her brother, I'd bet all my Galleons on her. She's tough. I know she is."
"And how do you know that, Draco?" Goyle asked him.
"Because I see it every day. I watch her. She may be weak in some places, but she's a fighter. Why else would she be in Gryffindor?"
"Because her twin is in Gryffindor. Duh." Crabbe and Goyle laughed once again.
"Whatever. Just leave me alone now." The two walked back to the Slytherin Dungeons, leaving Draco and I alone. I waited until he wasn't looking in my direction to take off the cloak. He turned around, looking at me. "How much did you hear?"
"All of it," I replied truthfully. There was no point in lying to him. I didn't want to start anything by lying to what I heard just now. "Is that true? You think I'm tough?"
"Yes," he replied bluntly.
"Then why do you say things like I'm worthless and shit? Is it some way to boost my confidence or something? Because if it is, it's not working."
Malfoy rolled his eyes before he started. "In a way, you're tough. Have you ever thought about that?"
"You know I'm not tough. I'm weak, Malfoy. You, out of all people, should know that. You see it everyday, during the summer. You saw my face when I asked you about those guys taking me away. I was scared! I'm just this scared, fragile, weak person inside."
"Potterette, you've kicked me and talked back to me. Does that not say anything about you? No one else would do that."
"Hermione punched you last year," I reminded him.
He winced at my comment. "Don't remind me," he said.
"Look, I don't have time for this. I have to go." I walked past him, but he grabbed my wrist and spun me around. "Let go of me, Malfoy!" I tried to get out of his grasp, but it was no use.
Somehow, I tripped over the cloak and we both fell on the ground. I fell on top of him and looked down at his face. We locked eyes for what seemed like forever. His eyes weren't like Cedric's. My heart started to race. For a second, I thought we were going to kiss. But that thought went away once I realized what we were doing. I got off of him and brushed myself off.
He got up as well and looked at me. "Don't tell anyone about this," he told me.
"Wasn't planning on it," I replied.
He walked away, looking back at me and not turning around until he cut the corner. I sighed and didn't know what to do now. After that awkward encounter with Malfoy, I wasn't really up for meeting Cedric. I put the cloak back on and headed back to the Gryffindor Tower.
Once I got there, I didn't feel like going back up to the dorms. So I decided to crash on the couch again. For some reason, I felt like I went to the other side of the castle for nothing, since I didn't meet Cedric. But I knew that I was wrong.
