Chapter Seventeen
My blood runs cold as I stand there in a frozen position with wide eyes. Trevor leaves my sight and closes the bathroom door while I'm left in complete shock and confusion.
The getaway driver is Trevor's height and build, from what we can guess from the footage and information that was given.
I sneak into the kitchen and close the door behind me before pulling out my phone and repeatedly clicking onto Connor's number.
No signal.
"You've got to be joking," I whisper to myself as panic begins to spread in my chest.
I know how to fight, I know how to handle a gun and deal with these sorts of people, but Trevor has a large build and is the strongest person I've ever met. I've witnessed him breaking a car window with one punch to save a dog in need before. He didn't even wince nor care about his knuckles.
But would Trevor really hurt me? He doesn't seem the sort to, but I guess I don't really know him.
Everything is starting to add up. It's him, I know it is. He's the getaway driver. He's working with Raine. He's been pretending to be on our side; that's how she's so good at being one step ahead of us, because she has inside information.
"Vanessa?" Trevor calls down. I look around the room in a frantic state with not a clue what to do.
I straighten my back and clear my throat before exiting the room with a smile on my face, meeting him in the hallway. "I've just been exploring the place. I hope you don't mind."
He shoves his hands in his trouser pockets and shrugs. "Go ahead."
I'm struggling to find the right words to say. "So...you have a cat?"
Trevor nods with a bright smile on his cheeks. "Pebbles."
"Unique name." I look around the hall, unsure what to do with myself.
Trevor must sense that I'm nervous because he gives me a confused look. "She was rescue cat. I didn't want to replace the name that she was used to."
I nod my head, pretending to care when all I'm thinking about in this moment is how to get myself away from him while also collecting evidence. The only problem is, I don't have a car to get away.
"Are you okay? You're acting weird," he tells me in a concerned tone.
I immediately pull a smile back up and replace my fallen mask. All I can think is: why would he keep it hidden? Especially if he knew we were trying to find a man with the same tattoo in the same place. There can only be one explanation.
"I'm fine, just a little dizzy. I think I need to sit down."
"Do you want me to get you anything?"
"No, no, I'm okay," I assure him as I travel to the living room where I seat myself in the sofa chair. He lowers himself onto the sofa opposite, staring at me intensely. "So when did you start working for Connor? I've never actually asked."
"Almost fourteen years. I was eighteen when he took me on as an apprentice," Trevor says, still keeping a close eye on me.
I pick up my files and start to flick through the paperwork, attempting to act casual. "So you were twenty-three when the case against Raine began?"
He nods his head, unaware that my phone is recording every word we speak.
"What did you think?"
"About what?" he asks.
"The entire thing; Raine and her crimes. What was your initial thought."
He blows out a deep breath and leans back into the sofa as he dives into his memory. "I was mostly excited."
"Excited?"
"Yeah. It was my first big case, so I wasn't really thinking about who or what had happened."
"Right," I mutter. I trail my pen across my page, only to find no ink is following it. Trevor notices my annoyance as I scribble on the page and try to make it work, but it's useless.
"I'll get you a spare one," he says to me while chuckling. I watch as he heads to his top shelf and reaches for the pot of pens that are held in a green jar.
He's definitely suspicious, I can see it in his eyes. What if he knows that I know?
As he takes the jar of pens from the shelf, he accidentally nudges a white cloth that drops and falls to the ground with a loud thump. I peer over and feel every muscle in my body tense when I see the gun on the floor.
I look to Trevor. He looks at me. Then he grabs the gun and wraps it back up in the white fabric.
"Sorry about that. I must have left it out. Usually it's in a safe."
I laugh nervously and look to the front door as I plan my escape route. There's a woods opposite. If I fail to grab his car keys, I can run into there and lose him that way. I'll have to play it by the moment and hopefully find my way back to town.
The banging noise returns. Trevor looks behind him and quickly goes to check on his cat, so I take the chance and quickly rush towards the front door, not bothering to take any paperwork with me.
As I unlock the door and swing it open, I hear Trevor from behind me and almost jump out of my skin.
"Vanessa? What are you doing?"
I spin around. The fabric that holds the gun is still in his hand. A white and black cat follows Trevor and loops through his legs as it purrs.
"I know," I tell him in a frantic tone.
Trevor creases his eyebrows. "What?"
"You're the getaway driver. You're working for Raine."
He recoils his head. "What are you talking-"
"I saw the tattoo. The one on your chest."
Realisation sets over his face before he takes a step forward. "Vanessa, let me explain. It's not what it seems."
I look to the fabric in his hand and quickly take a step back onto the porch. "Keep away from me. I'm going to Connor."
"Just come back inside so we can talk. I'll explain the tattoo."
He continues to grow closer.
"No!" I shout before pushing the door that slams into his face, sending him to the ground.
I don't waste a second before sprinting away. I check the car, but it's locked and useless, so I take way towards the tall trees in the distance. Trevor is calling after me desperately, but I don't even try to turn around to check how close he is. It'll only panic me more.
After five minutes of endless sprinting, I reach the woods and quickly take shelter behind a tree where I try to catch my breath and slow my heart that is pounding violently against my chest. My back is against the rough bark as I place a hand over my chest and look up at the grey sky that is barely visible due to the hundreds of leaves covering it. My eyes close and I slowly drop to the ground, not caring about the mud or dirt that is starting to cling to my clothes.
I glance around the corner of the tree after finally calming myself, only to see a confused and frantic Trevor who is looking all over the place for me with no idea what direction to take. He runs his hands over his hair and leaves them on his head as he continues to search for me.
"Vanessa!" he shouts desperately.
I turn my head back to the trail of trees and shake my head before pulling out my phone. Still no signal. I slap my phone against my leg and let out a frustrated sigh, not knowing what to do next.
I turn back again to see if I can go another way to find the main road, but then I see Trevor stood in a straight position, staring right at me. Neither of us move at first, but then I'm suddenly up on my feet and sprinting through the trees while he shouts to me again. I panting and panicking as I try to remember the way I came in. The light from the entrance grows smaller, and suddenly I'm lost in this maze of trees with no signal and only Trevor around.
I can no longer see him, but I can hear his voice echoing my name. To give myself a break, I stop running and instead walk through the woods as I search for some sort of trail or way out. So far, it doesn't seem there is one. I don't know how long this goes on for, so I could be here for hours trying to escape.
As the minutes go by, I continue to check my phone for signal. I send a message to Octavia, knowing it won't send and she won't receive it, but if they find my phone they'll know what happened by opening my messages.
VANESSA 20:48
In the woods opposite Trevor's house. He's working for Raine and he's trying to find me.
The message fails to send, just as I expected, but at least it's something to be recovered if I mysteriously go missing. But then, would anyone ever manage to find my phone? Would anyone go this far out into the woods? Surely they wouldn't be able to find their way out of this place, unless they're familiar with the area.
I hear a twig snap behind me. I spin around, but find nothing. I'm looking around frantically with my heavy breaths being the only noise around.
"Vanessa," Trevor's voice says.
I jump to the sound of his voice that is too close for comfort. He's on the left side of me, so close. I start running and can hear his heavy footsteps stomp after me. They're only growing closer.
"Vanessa, stop!" he shouts, but I don't. "I'm trying to help you!"
Liar. The second I stop...I don't even want to think about what will happen. I doubt Raine would let him do anything, even though she hardly cares about what happens to me. I'm still her sister after all.
"Vanessa!" he shouts. "Watch out!"
Before I process his words, I've lost my footing and dropped into a long ditch that carries me far down in the woods. I tumble and roll through the trees, feeling branches and rocks underneath me until I reach the bottom.
Through my blurry vision, I can see Trevor slowly travelling down the bank to reach me. Something sticky and wet is smeared over my head. It's dripping onto the floor and it's red. Everything hurts, but my head does the most.
"Vanessa!" I hear Trevor shout, but his words are muffled and I'm losing consciousness. "Shit. Stay with me, okay? You're going to be okay?" is the last thing I hear before my body stops working.
