Fate is Set in Stone

"Fate is set in stone. It can't be changed."

Sally Jackson - a young woman in her mid twenties - smiled down at her son. The boy's face was split into the widest grin she had ever seen. It was obvious the boy was proud, as he should be. He'd just memorized and recited the most memorable quote in history. All at the tender age of five.

The boy had worked hard to get there. He made his mother tell him the story of Perseus every night. Who wants to listen to silly fairytales about stupid princesses and 'charming' princes when he could listen to the life story of an actual, real life, hero?

His mother found it cute. The boy was positively obsessed with his namesake, claiming he wants to grow up to be just like him. He wants to help the world in as many ways as he can and then settle down with his soulmate. Maybe even soulmates. The thought always made the boy giddy. Somewhere out there was a person, perhaps people, destined for him to love. Destined to love him.

The boy loved fate. In his mind, the fates were three kind old ladies who would knit you comfy socks for Christmas and give you cookies. He liked to imagine that they knew everyone's favourite cookie. He would meet them in his dreams, say hello and then sit down for a tea party with stuffed animals and blue cookies. They were very nice. They even gave him tea. He felt very grown up. He would always giggle as they told him how to hold the cup.

Most young kids believed in Santa, wrote him letters yearly. They waited for that day to come when they could run down the stairs, squealing and laughing, their amused parents trailing along behind them as they went to open presents.

Percy didn't really like Santa. He wrote him letters sure, but that was because he didn't want to be rude. If he was being honest, he didn't even believe in Santa.

Percy believed in the fates.

He wrote them letters yearly, maybe even more than that, begging for any information on who he was destined to be with. Sometimes he'd just thank them. They gave him the option to be loved. Percy didn't get a lot of love. Sure, he had his mother and he loved her dearly, but on the other hand, his mother's love came with Gabe's. He didn't like Gabe's love.

But that's okay, because fate is set in stone. It can't be changed.
