A. SKIN SMOOTHING
1) Start with your smudge tool.
(I changed my customized my
toolbar so they smudge tool
is S, and the original tool is now A.)
2) Get to know your settings.
BRUSH: Skin Brushes by env1ro (deviantart)
STRENGTH: I keep my normal setting around 35%, but the picture the resolution, the stronger the strength. Around areas like eyes and mouth, I decrease the strength to 15-20%.
(The left picture is 35% strength, and the right is 70%)
As you can see, the bigger the strength, the more unnatural the skin looks. (Of course, perfectly smooth skin like this is unnatural, but either way.)
When using the brush, you want to brush up and down, and then side to side to prevent harsh or visible lines on the screen. Whatever brushstroke you make, make the opposite strokes to smooth it out completely.
3) Begin to smooth the skin.
Be wary around eyes and lips, because you don't want to smooth the eyes over, or ruin any detail that might distort the face.
(Note: You don't have to smooth out the lips, I just choose to.)
If you notice that you had distorted some details, especially around the eyes, you can use the sharpen tool to redefine it.
Also, if there is any other part of the skin showing (arms, hands, necks, fingers, etc.), I will smooth them out in the exact same way.
B. HIGHLIGHT/CONTOUR
(This is only my version! I'm sure
plenty of people have their own
way and that's totally okay!)
Before you start with highlighting and contouring your model's face, you have to understand where to put the highlight and contour. Even though this is graphics, you want to treat it as if you're putting on makeup.
Also, you have to think about light dynamics. If there is light hitting your face, the highlights will stand out more prominently, but if there is dull lighting, your highlights won't be there.
As you can see the highlights with the dull lighting looks weird. So, If there is dull light on the face (normally it's a shadow covering half of the face), I would advise against putting highlights on those areas.
For contour, however:
The contour is darker and more intense in the dull light because the shadows are enhanced.
CONTOUR
1) Place your contour color on the proper areas of the face > Change blend mode to soft light.
2) Using the smudge tool (strength 50%) start to blend the contour.
If the contour is too harsh, turn down the opacity.
3) The nose
HIGHLIGHT
4) Place white on the proper areas of the face > Change blend mode to overlay.
5) Using the smudge tool (strength 50%) start to blend the highlight.
If the highlight is too harsh, turn down the opacity.
And you're done.
You can add blush if you'd like:
1) Place blush color on apples of cheeks > change blend mode to soft light.
I normally put the blush layer between the contour and highlight.
2) Using the smudge tool (strength 50%) start to blend the blush.
If the blush is too harsh, turn down the opacity.
