Chapter Six | The Escape
I CAN'T BELIEVE SHE would do something to Artemis! I swear I'm going to kill herー well, not actually, since Bruce would probably ground me for life and afterー but I swear I'm going to metaphorically kill her if she hurt one of my teammates! Meanwhile, Wally was currently freaking out. I wanted to scoff, since he looked like he was about to pull out his hair. 'Oh come on, Rob, I so don't like Artemis!' Smh. Yeah right.
"What do you think happened to her? What if she's being tortured?! Or what ifー"
"Hey Kid Mouth, we're all worried too! But we need to be calm, so shut up or so help meー" I started but was quickly cut off by M'gann.
"Artemis!" she squealed as she flew down the hallway to the apparent archer.
"Oh, hey guys. How'd the interrogation thing go?" Artemis asked, popping a chip into her mouth from the bag she was holding.
"We had to stop it because you got captured!" Wally exclaimed.
A confused look washed over her face. "Captured? Um, I was just at the target range."
"But Blackout said she hired someone to do something to you!" Wally said.
Artemis shook her head, munching on some more chips. "I've been in here the entire time, haven't seen anyone."
I scrunched up my eyebrows in confusion, now mirroring Artemis and the rest of the team. Why would she say?ーoh shoot.
"She tricked us!" I yelled, turning around and sprinting back down the hall towards the interrogation room. My heart pounded, feet echoing across the floor as I heard everyone following me. How was I tricked by her again? How could I have been so stupid? She's probably halfway across the world by now!
Wally suddenly zipped ahead of me, disappearing around the corner and into the room. I ran in a few moments after, only to see my worse fear had come true. She was gone. I groaned and put my head in my hands as the rest of the team started to pile in the room.
"Batman's gonna kill me," I muttered.
Brielle's POV
I treaded lightly down the hall, careful not to trip any alarms. I just needed to get to wherever they kept their files, find the prints of this place, and get out. All while an entire team of trained sidekicks and Batman and Superman were looking for me. Piece of cake, right?
I searched room after room, knowing that Squidkid and his team would have figured out that I was gone by now. The more I thought about the situation I was in, I inwardly sighed. On second thought, maybe I was a teensy bit in over my head.
I was snapped out of my thoughts by the sound of snoring. On high alert, I peered around the corner and into what looked like a library. In there was the biggest dog I had ever seen. Almost like a wolf; it was pure white and had fangs the size of my knives. It slept peacefully on the carpet by the fireplace blocking any possible way out.
Well, I can't go back the way I came, since there was no way out and the team would be following me. And the only door was on the other side of the room, meaning I had to pass the giant beast.
I took a deep breath and hoped my training would be enough to sneak past undetected. I put one foot out the door, looking up to make sure it was still asleep. I took another step, the wood under my foot creaking slightly. The dogs ear twitched, but he stayed asleep.
My confidence slowly grew with every step I took; at one point I even thought of doing a backflip. (Okay, not really, because I'm not that stupid. I needed to make a point, alright?) I was about ten feet from the door when I decided to pick up the pace. Ten feet was all I needed to make it home safe.. well, safer.
I counted down the number of steps in my head as I took each one.
Three..
Two..
And then I made it out safe!
.. Which is what I wished had happened.
I was just about to walk out of the door when alarms suddenly started blaring, red lights flashing all over the place like a strip club. (Don't ask how I know, I just do.) Then the speakers came to life. "Everyone in the base, this is Batman. A high-level criminal named Blackout is on the loose, this is not a drill. Emergency lock down commencing now."
In the distant I heard the sounds of things slamming shut and locking down. I groaned, but at the same time I was sort of touched. They considered me a high-level criminal? Okay, now back to that whole 'dog' issue.
The animal, now awake at the piercing sound, jumped up and turned around. It's eyes locked with my mask, blood red meeting white. I put a hand out as I backed up slowly. "Nice doggy?" He snarled and walked towards me, one is his steps making three of mine. "Hey boy, easy there.."
Then he let out a loud bark and lunged, catching me off guard and knocking me to the ground. My vision blurred for a moment when my head hit the ground, and I groaned. The pads of his feet held my shoulders firm to the ground and his claws dug into the floor just above them.
It took me all of my strength to just barely keep him at bay. Drool got all over my face as his massive teeth tried to rip my head off, wild barks echoing down the hall. How Superman hadn't used his superhearing and x-ray vision to find us right now and take me in was beyond me.
I glanced to my left, seeings a random piece of metal scattered on the floor. It wasn't big by any means, but it did give me an idea. I quickly yelled, "Treats!" as I pulled one of my hands out from under the beast and grabbed the metal, managing to toss it across the room. The dog took the bait and bounded after it, quickly forgetting about me.
Not giving him a chance to realize what it was, I got up and ran out of the room. I turned and slammed the wooden door shut, locking it. I took a chair that was near the door and put it against the door handle for extra support. Now back on track, I once again I sprinted off down the hall in search of the computer room. The only way out now was to hack the systems, something which I had no idea how to do. Thankfully, I knew people who could.
It took me another ten minutes to eventually find it. I arrived in a large room, with a massive computer on the far wall and smaller ones around it. I ran to the machine as quietly as I could, before reaching into my black utility belt and digging around. My hands were shaky, but I managed to control them long enough to find what I was looking for.
I pulled up a small metal flash drive with a white 'L' on the front. I found a port for it and plugged it in. Immediately, the computer came to life and numbers started running all over the screen.
If you haven't guessed, the 'L' stands for Lexcorp. The owner, Lex Luthor, had called me in a little while ago on a mission to get rid of some random guy I didn't care about enough to listen as to why he was killed. In return, along with my cash, I received a couple pretty sick gifts from the billionaire, which I had never been more thankful for.
Suddenly, a bar appeared on the screen saying, DOWNLOAD COMPLETE, but that's all that happened. Wasn't it supposed to shut down all systems or something? Man, I should really listen more to people when they try to explain things to me. I pulled the flash drive out and inspected it, beginning to walk back out of the room. I turned it around it in hands and played with it, a confused look adorning my features.
Then I smacked straight into a wall.
"Shit!"
I groaned and grabbed my head, stumbling a few feet back. Then I put a hand out in front of me to stabilize myself from falling over, and found the wall wasー
Warm?
I opened my eyes and was almost taken aback the bright blue spandex that greeted me. I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion, but my eyes slowly widened as they trailed up, passing an all-too-familiar red 'S' insignia embellished within the fabric. I didn't want to go any further, knowing what I had walked myself into (mentally and literally) but forced myself to look up into a pair of captivating cerulean blue eyes.
Superman looked at me in his signature positionー arms crossed as his bright red cape flowed behind him, his feet hovering a few feet off the ground to make him seem more intimidating. And let me tell you, it was working really damn well. Because a mad Superman was not something you ever wanted to mess with.
I backed up a couple feet as he floated closer, our eyes still locked. I was stopped as I bumped into seemingly another wall behind me, and I let out an almost inaudible shriek as I jumped to the side, facing both Superman and now Batman.
Don't show weakness, Selina's voice rung in my head, Don't you dare show weakness to the enemy.
A smirk pulled on my lips as I relaxed my body, still feeling like a nervous wreck on the inside, but trying not to show it. "Boys! What a surprise!" I said, but inwardly smacked myself when it came out nervous and feeble instead of cool and collected like I wanted it to be.
Oh, I am so screwed.
Third Person POV
If it was in Batman's person to grinー he would be. A feeling of accomplishment washed over him; but his face still remained emotionless and stone cold.
She was scared.
"Boys! What a surprise!" she said nervously.
"What were you doing?" Superman asked, and she slightly shrugged.
"That depends.. what do you think I was doing?"
"You were stealing files," Batman said, not as an assumption but a fact, giving her a long-overdue Bat-glare.
Her nervousness seemed to fade away when he spoke as they watched her slip back into her usual arrogant self. She put a hand on her hip and smirked. "You really are The World's Greatest Detective, aren't you?"
Batman resisted the urge to roll his eyes, even if no one would see it. How could someone this annoying manage to escape his grasp for so long?
"So.. if this conversation is over now, I'm just gonna go.." she trailed off, attempting to slip around Superman. He put a hand out and used only his index finger to push her back, making her nearly fall over.
"Not so fast," The Boy Scout said.
Even though she had her mask on, Bruce knew she was rolling her eyes. "Oh come on Kent, don't be so cliché."
He watched Clark's features turn several different emotions at onceー shock, confusion, surprise, and anger were the easiest to distinguish.
"W-whaー I don't know what you're talking about," he said.
Putting an end to his excessive stuttering, Bruce decided there was no point hiding it from her unless they brainwashed her (something which he would not be opposed to if he was given the chance).
"How do you know that?" he demanded.
"Because unlike everyone else in Metropolis I'm not as stupid as hell?" she said like it was the most obvious thing in the world, "I've seen Clark in the papers before. So I took a pair of glasses, stuck them to a picture of Superman, and bada-bing bada-boom, here we are."
"And honestly?" she continued, but Bruce knew she was simply stalling, "I don't understand why you're acting all surprised. I know who most of The League is, and I haven't told a soul."
"Why? If I was in your place I would," Clark said.
She raised an eyebrow.
"Not that I want you to," he added quickly. Bruce wanted to sigh. Leave it to Clark to fall for the classic 'stalling tactic' and actually converse with the enemy.
"Respect, I guess. I mean I have a secret identity too. I wouldn't want my enemy knowing it and spilling it all over the place. But don't get me wrong, for the right price I would easily spread it like a wildfire, considering you guys mean nothing to me."
Clark didn't respond, taking in the information he had just been given.
"You need to come with us," Bruce said, finally getting to the point he had wanted to make since the futile conversation had begun.
A teasing frown appeared on her face. "Bats! We were just having a heart to heart not even a minute ago, and now you want to fight?"
The second Bat-glare in two minutes was thrown in her direction.
"You know what? Why am I even surprised. 'Moment-ruiner' is basically in your job description," she scoffed.
"Let's not be rash," Clark said, catching on to the fact that Bruce was more than ready to fight her, "maybe we can talk this out."
She grinned. "Always the Boy Scout, hm, Clarkie? Well, let me tell you a little thing about meー rash, is my middle name."
And then she lunged.
