6: Devil's Lair

"Look who finally decided to show up after toiling in a parking lot all night," A rugged, tattooed man mocked Selene.

"I'm not in the mood, Brent. Where's Haden? " Selene said, massaging her forehead with her fingers.

Last night was a disaster, she barely got a wink of sleep till the early morning. Keir's stupid sexy smirk flashed everytime she closed her eyes. The scenario in the parking lot played on her mind in a rewind.

Then coming up with an excuse to Haden got herself all worked up.

She came straight to Haden's lair, her work place as soon as she woke up.

She was in a fouler mood than ever and the tattooed man, Brent was known to make her days worse.

"Ooh! Someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed or a parking lot," Brent sniggered.

Selene huffed, "Would you shut the fuck up with the parking lot thing? Why were you even tracking me anyway? It's Haden's thing."

"Well he was busy last night entertaining guests." He said emphasising the word 'guests'.

They shared a known look. Selene understood she fucked up big this time. She hoped her reason was good enough to be excused.

"How many were they?" she asked, trying not to sound curious.

"Three, probably four. I don't know, I didn't count." He shrugged, "-I was busy myself," He winked at her.

Selene rolled her eyes disgusted, "Yeah I bet you were."

"You should join me too, it'll be fun." Brent leaned over her.

"It won't be fun anymore when I kick you in the-" Selene was cut off by a rough voice.

"Guys! Guys! Chill out. Let's not start fighting, off season," Selene knew who it was.

She looked at the man descending the stairs. He turned to her flashing a proud smile, "Darling," he said reaching for her hand.

She smiled back taking his hand and stood close to him while his hand rested on her waist.

"I missed you last night." He cooed in her ear.

Selene gave him her best smile, "I missed you too, Haden."

He dipped his head claiming for her lips and She accepted readily. Brent watched them with discontent, wondering how he got Selene out of everyone.

They broke their kiss and Haden flashed her a smile. Selene smiled back, stealing a side glance at Brent in between.

It always made her anxious whenever Haden's soldiers were around. But mostly Brent, his brown eyes stared down at her with an unsettling rage and envy that got her on the edge.

Haden turned to Brent with a disapproving look, "You should learn to respect your brother's girl."

"And she should learn to respect your brother," Brent spoke back.

"Stop being so difficult." Haden gave both of them disapproving looks. His voice came out rough with a slight southern accent that slipped up sometimes.

Brent and Selene both know that behind his calmness there's a storm raging, if he doesn't get what he wants.

But Brent was not someone who was scared of his brother. He gave her a hostile look,"One deserves respect when they are worthy of it."

"Exactly." Selene stated calmly, staring back at him. He clenched his jaw in anger and walked away in a random direction.

Haden sighed and turned his attention to her, "Where were you last night?" He came straight to the point.

Dread filled in Selene's heart, "I-I got into a fight-" She was cut off.

"Yes, well I can see that," he said running his finger down her neck.

"I was tired so I went home early," She coughed up her pathetic excuse for a reason.

"Hmm," he paused thinking to himself, "Our guests missed you last night," He looked at her sideways.

"I know, I-. It won't happen again." She reasoned.

"It better not, because it's so boring without you." He smiled stroking her cheek with his thumb.

Selene fought the urge to pull back but smiled at him instead.

"You got the money?" he asked.

She nodded at the bag on the sofa in the living room.

"Everything went well with the client?" He questioned again.

Yep! Got himself a ticket to hell! Selene thought to herself.

"He refused to pay in full at first but after some explaining he agreed and paid in toto," Selene briefed her meeting.

"Well, I don't doubt those 'explaining skills' of yours." He said, smirking at her. Selene smirked back proudly.

"I'll hand over this money and head over to my next meeting details," She said, reaching for the money bag.

Haden stopped and turned her around to face him, "See ya tonight?"

She pecked him on his cheek, "Definitely."

Selene grabbed the bag and took the stairs.

First, the money gets dumped at the money counter section from where it goes to the other room for counting. When the count tallies with the deal amount, they transfer it to the bank section. From there they either store in the treasury or it goes into the investments.

Haden doesn't trust actual banks in the town. No one in downtown does, they have their own banks and treasuries. What happens in the treasury and how, is beyond Selene's hierarchy.

She walked through the long corridor of the first floor, making her way to the first counter.

"How does Haden not see the lies in your excuse?" A voice came behind her.

Selene rolled her eyes to herself and kept walking, "It's called trust."

"Really? I call it blind," He taunted.

Selene handed the money bag at the counter and faced him.

"What's your problem, Brent?" She folded her arms across her chest.

"My problem is, how did you fight in the lot all night? That is so much stamina right there."

"No you idiot, I lost my phone there during the fight."

"Aha? And it conveniently rang when you came back for it?"

"Yes," Selene huffed. She had enough of his questions. It was easier to deal with Haden than this pesky brother.

He gave her an unbelievable laugh, "What were you doing from the fight till the phone call?"

Selene closed her eyes taking a deep breath to control her rage, she could literally kill him bare handed if he wasn't the brother to the boss.

"I wasn't feeling well so I went home." She gritted out.

He narrowed his eyes at her, trying to detect any lies but Selene's poker face gave nothing away.

He always wondered whether she was a great liar or a trusty staff. He never got the answer even after working for three years with her.

Selene resumed walking, ignoring him. He grabbed her by the waist, turning her to face him.

"What the hell?" Selene wriggled out of his grip.

"Nice tattoo that you've got there." He traced her half dried cuts on her neck.

"Keep your fucking hands to yourself, nitwit." She spat his hand away.

"You know I can't when I'm around you." He smirked, smugly leaning over her.

His smoke stench mixed with heavy Musk cologne hit her nostrils.

"There are many parts of your body which don't stay put when they see anything that wears a skirt." She spat looking down at him.

She pushed him away from her and walked past him. She heard his chuckles behind followed by his cheap remark.

"Well, I personally prefer women who wear jeans and a leather jacket," he said referring to her go- to-attire.

Bile rose in her throat for being in the same breathing space as this detestful man.

She went inside the next section for the details about the client, assigned to her today.

"Hey! Selene."

Shana's chirpy voice and gleeful smile brought a smile on her face. She needed it much after the encounter with Brent.

"Hey, Shana." She gave her a small smile.

"Rough night?" Shana asked, looking at her tired eyes and worn out face.

"Tell me about it." Selene rolled her eyes.

"Who's the guy?" Shana teased her.

"Why do you think that it has something to do with a guy?" Selene chuckled to herself.

Shana shrugged, "It was worth a shot."

"Any client meetings today for me?" Selene asked.

"Yes, with Jace Wayden."

"Jace Wayden? Ugh! My day is just getting worse and worse." Selene groaned.

"This his contact number, better get started now." Shana gave her the contact details.

"Yeah thanks, Shana. Bye!"

Selene came out of the mansion, successfully preventing further encounters with any of the brothers.

She leaned over her car and dialled the client's number on her phone. It rang three times before someone picked it up.

"Hello?" The person spoke.

"Is this Jace Wayden?"

"Yes, why?"

"You remember the deal with Haden? Let's close it tonight."

"Today?" His voice came out in surprise.

"Is there a problem?" Her eyebrows knitted in confusion.

"No, no, Nothing. Tonight's fine. Where? "

"The usual. Hudson club, nine 'o' clock sharp." She instructed and hung up.

Selene entered in her car and revived the engine, deciding to go home and take some rest till the night.
