15: The Right Justice

"Excited for your first day?" Keir asked, turning to her.

He leaned over her car, taking a deep puff from his cigarette and blowing out the smoke. Selene was passive smoking from it, as a result of their proximity.

"I've cleaned up your messes before. So don't mind me for not being  thrilled." She snapped.

He studied her face for a moment with his calculative eyes while taking another puff of his cigarette. A side smirk started to play on his pink lips, as the smoke escaped out of them.

"What?" Selene frowned at the way he was looking at her.

He gazed at her for a few more seconds before turning away, wordlessly.

Selene crossed her arms over her chest. She was getting impatient minute by minute.

"How long are we going to wait?" asked Selene.

"As long as the victim walks over there." With his cigarette butt, he pointed at the strip of pedestrian crossover between the two buildings.

"That's oddly specific," She said glancing at the street before turning to him, "And since when do you smoke?"

"Since 'none of your business'," He answered nonchalantly.

Keir took the last puff and put it off on the ground. He released the smoke that he was holding in his mouth while some of it came out of his nose, making him look like a big bad bull.

Selene observed a thing or two when Keir pulled on his psychopathic persona.

He doesn't talk and humour when he is around his kill. His hands tremor slightly with excitement which he fails at covering. His eyes adapt the darkest shade of black. Lastly he has the most sick and menacing smile she has ever seen.

It is obvious that Selene didn't like this side of him. As annoying as he is as a charmer, she likes his talkative and irritating side more than this edgy and psychotic killer one.

She wondered which was real, the charmer or the psycho.

Selene looked back to the street where he pointed, asking herself why that particular street.

"What about that guy? Do you want to kill him?" Selene elbowed Keir to grab his attention.

He swiftly looked at the street and narrowed his eyes at the walking person. He shook his head, "No."

"What?" Selene whispered to herself, watching the man walk away from their sight.

In the next five minutes, another person walked over the street.

"How about that one?" She asked but regretted it soon when the silhouette flicked it's long hair.

Keir looked at the woman strutting with her heels, it didn't take him a second to answer, "No."

Selene released a breath that she was holding. She wouldn't forgive herself if she was responsible for that woman's murder in the hands of a sick killer.

Selene decided to shut her mouth from now on. If she pushed him too far, they'll be two murders tonight. This time she'll be dead, for good.

They were silent for the next quarter hour, each of them deep in their own thoughts. Selene's thoughts drifted to Haden, thinking about the ways to keep him oblivious about her side business with Keir.

As for Keir, he was pondering over the ways to kill his next victim, so that he wouldn't get caught by the cops. Again.

Last time he got caught was five years ago. The cops didn't know who they were dealing with, he wasn't a renowned killer back then.

He had to kill every cop in the south Fairfax division of Virginia that was holding him. It was a massacre, some even say the most brutal of the decade.

It wasn't his proud moment but it was the same carnage that got him the name 'the cop killer'. Later he was called many, but his personal favourite was 'The angel wings killer' named after his killings of famous men including corrupted politicians to fake priests.

Keir shook his thoughts away and glanced back to the street, concentrating on the work he came here for.

Fortunately for him and unfortunately for the person walking down the street, Keir found his victim.

"That one," Keir said, making his way to that person.

Selene stood fixed to her spot and didn't follow him just like he ordered her.

She watched him walk swiftly to that man. He talked with the man for a few seconds before punching him in his face and knocking off that person.

A gasp escaped from her mouth to her surprise. But for some reason she couldn't tear her eyes from him. Her curiosity on how he decided this  particular man as his victim, got the best of her.

Keir gave a brief look at Selene's way before turning to the person in front of him. Though he punched right in his face, he wasn't unconscious. Keir took out a piece of cloth from his pocket and gagged deep in his mouth to prevent that man from screaming.

He leaned closer to the man with a sickening smile. The man was trying to stay awake but the pain from the previous punch was blinding his sight.

"You might get parole from this law but you can't escape me, Frederick," said Keir, making the man's eyes widen for a fraction.

"Not after what you did to those little girls." His voice had an eeriness that could make any man pee in his pants.

Selene heard a grunt when Keir punched the man again. She didn't understand why he bothered to punch an already knocked off man whom he was going to kill soon.

Keir effortlessly threw the bulky man over his bony shoulder and made his way to her. Selene was glad that this part of the town was usually left alone at this time of the night.

But there's no assurance that no one can walk now and then. They should hurry before anyone sees them.

She should hurry before anyone sees her with him.

Selene got in the car and sat on the driver's side. Keir opened the car's trunk and tossed the man in it. She winced when the man's head hit something hard.

Keir soon got in the car beside her. His deep ragged breaths were heard loudly inside the car. His arms were visibly flexed and his palms were tightly fisted at his side.

The sight of him frightened her. She couldn't help but stare at him in bewilderment.

Keir snapped his neck to her, glaring  at her with his reddened dark eyes.

"Drive!" He barked in a concrete breaking voice at her, making her jump in her place.

She fumbled with the keys and soon revived the engine, driving to the place she dreaded she would never have to go again.

***

"You can leave, if you want."

"No, I got this." Selene stood her ground.

Keir shrugged and walked closer to the man tied to the chair. The same wooden chair that Selene and Will were tied to, on that ill fated night.

Keir pulled up the black cloth covering the soon to be dead man's face, revealing a disheveled and  disoriented man in his late thirties.

He looked to and fro between her and Keir, "Let me go! You sickos! Why did you bring me here?"

Selene couldn't help but roll her eyes at his questions. Why can't people be creative with their questions, obviously the killers won't answer those. She wondered how frequently the victims get to talk before being murdered brutally by Keir.

Keir scratched his stubble with his knife, a habit that he has, his gaze never left the man's eyes.

The man must have understood that yelling would take him nowhere when it comes to the psycho before him.

"Please man, I don't know who you are. If I've offended you somehow, I'm sure we can settle this in a less violent way," The man reasoned, his eyes almost brimming with tears.

It was not new for Selene to see men crying especially when it came to the matter of death.

Keir was silent all along, his face was blank to a point where it was too unsettling to watch. His eyes were hooded with visible darkness, his features tense and beastly.

He was far from the man that she ate pancakes with, two days ago. She was yet again perplexed on how a normal looking person can turn into an inhumane monster in a fraction of time.

Selene didn't have much live experiences with the psychopaths. She didn't know how they work, so looking at one in action was a once in lifetime thing. That was why she decided to stay even when he suggested she leave.

For some unknown reason, she didn't feel an urge to stop him. She hated herself for not feeling any remorse whatsoever for helping him to kill this man. That very thought disgusted her, making her wonder how heartless she had become while watching and killing people for more than a decade.

Keir leaned over him and spoke for the first time in five minutes, "Why do you think you are here, Frederick?"

"I don't know, man! Just - let me go!" The man, Frederick sobbed.

"You are here because you are a sinner," Keir stressed on the last word.

"Sinner? What are you talking about? I didn't do anything-"

Keir placed his knife at his neck, "Have you not sinned?" His sharp voice resonated throughout the shed.

"I-I," Fred mumbled, "I didn't," He answered.

Keir pierced the tip of his knife into his neck, blood flowed out of his punctured skin. Selene did her best not to wince or show any emotion on her face. The scene in front of her brought back the memory she had in this shed.

"So molesting and raping three little girls that never got to grow up and see the world is not sin?!" Suddenly he yelled making both Fred and Selene jump in fright.

Keir pulled the knife from his neck and struck into his tied left hand. As soon as the knife pierced into his flesh, the man screamed at the top of his lungs in agony.

"FUCKIN' SHIT!" The man groaned and yelled in immense pain.

Selene was glad to stand behind Keir, she wasn't sure if she could handle seeing him enjoying what he was doing.

"Is it not? Huh?" Keir grabbed his face.

"It is! It is!" The man bawled. "I'm sorry, I wasn't myself then. I swear I never had any intention of hurting them."

"And yet you did," Keir growled.

He placed his palm on his injured hand and forced his weight on it.

A world trembling scream escaped Fred's lips. He shook his congested face and begged him to stop.

Selene wasn't doing good herself, her breaths came out ragged. Even if she saw Haden and his men torture men and kill before, watching Keir doing the same in a sick way was too much for her.

"Do you regret it?" Keir asked him, pressing more on the injured hand.

The man shut his eyes in pain as tears fell out of them. His face was red, looked as if his brain could burst out any minute.

"I do! I do!" He cried.

"Then why didn't you stay in the jail?!" Keir yelled again.

From behind she could see Keir's body trembling with heavy emotion.

"I-I wanted to see my wife," The man answered.

Keir growled and swiftly stabbed his knife into his right thigh.

Another earth shattering scream left out of his mouth. The ill built shed shivered as if it can collapse any minute.

The man hysterically shook in his chair, screaming on and on for minutes.

"Don't fucking lie to me!" Keir yelled.

Selene heart was on her sleeve, she didn't know what to expect next. She wanted him to stop, and yet she didn't want to. What the man did to those girls was beyond forgiveness and these monsters should not be left free in the world.

"I came out to meet my friend," The man spoke trembling, "He - uh," He hesitated, "We planned to silence the girl's parents before the trials started again," He answered finally.

Selene's face twisted in disgust. The man was not worth anything. Killing him was even too merciful for him but it would at least bring justice for what he did to those girls.

Keir pulled back and stood straight, staring down at Frederick. The man begged him to leave him and that he would never even think to do anything like that again.

"You should've just stayed in the prison, Frederick," Keir muttered.

Fred's eyes widened at his words. He looked at Selene and begged her to release him.

Keir turned his face, silently watching her from the corner of his eyes. Selene turned her head down, not wanting to watch the disgusting man before her.

"Not even the god can save you from me," Keir whispered before leaning over him and stabbing his gut.

He pulled out his knife and started frantically stabbing everywhere over Frederick's trunk. The stabs went deep and visceral, Keir was so fast that the man didn't even have a chance to scream again.

The blood from his mouth prevented him from screaming, his deep brown eyes froze staring at his killer lastly.

For the next ten seconds, Keir kept stabbing at the dead man's heart.

The sound of knife piercing the flesh, and crushing the ribs is something Selene would never forget in her life.

Selene felt disgusted, for what Frederick had done or how he got killed by Keir, she was not sure.

Once he was satisfied stabbing him, Keir turned to Selene cautiously, his eyes were not soulless as she expected them to be. They were filled with relief and concern, which was an odd combination.

His eyes grew more concerned when he searched her eyes. He took a wet cloth from the table, cleaning his hands with it.

With fast large steps he walked over to her, taking her in his large arms and surprising her.

He patted her hair with his hand, "Shhh.. It's alright. It's over," He calmed her down with his soft voice.

Selene's confusion ended when a lone tear trailed along her cheek, falling onto his shoulder.

She didn't know what pushed her into tears. Was it watching Keir doing something so monstrous or the fact that she saw herself in those little girls when she was younger, she couldn't say.

She placed her arms around his waist, accepting his comforting embrace and letting out the silent tears of her own agony.

The three girls might have or might not get their justice but Selene sure as hell got hers after eleven years.

The justice for being molested and treated wrongly by her foster carer for months as a minor.

The right justice that the law never did was brought by a serial killer today.

Angel wings killer indeed!
