Chapter 18
I land in time to block a dark blast from Ivan, aimed straight for Alfred's head. It would have killed him.
"Arthur! You're alive!" Alfred exclaims, and I can hear the awe in his voice. Then, the awe changes to confusion. "And you have wings?"
Ivan's eyes widen before darkening in anger. "You'll regret leaving me, angel," he accuses, pointing his long sword in my direction, causing the metal to shine coldly in the sunlight. "You should have been mine."
Suddenly, a graceful shadow leaps in front of him, standing poised in front of him with throwing knives at the ready. Natalia, donning a battle skirt rather than her usual maid outfit takes a step towards me, pulling her arm back to throw a knife at me. Before she can fling it forward, a silver bolt flies into her hand, causing her to drop the knife.
Katyusha stands atop the golden dragon, aiming her crossbow surprisingly steadily for someone with one hand. Her armor glistens in the light, and her eyes seem so much brighter than they were when we met.
Ivan and Natalia both look shocked to see her, alive and even in fighting condition. "Hello, brother, sister," she addresses them, a bolt loading itself into place with the use of her magic.
"I'll kill the both of you!" Ivan shouts, literally glowing with anger. "Natalia!" he calls, and she immediately runs toward Katyusha, beginning an intense battle between the two sisters. Knives and bolts fly towards each other, and the sound of a dragon's fire breath erupts from the once again lively battlefield.
"You shouldn't have attacked this place," I warn, letting my magic build. He snarls at me, sending demons my way. He's already used so much power that there are only a few he can actually control. It's only a matter of time before they turn on him. "They are going to kill you if you cannot supply enough energy," I say, knocking them all back with a flick of my wrist. "And you'll eventually run out of magic."
Ivan's eyes grow panicked, and he seems to be growing paranoid, eyeing his "servants" nervously. "Shut up!" he screams at me, gesturing forward and sending more demons hurtling towards me.
Doing the same to them as I did to the others, I feel my patience thin with the demonic man in front of me.
Tightening my grip on my sword, I lunge towards him, slicing at him. He barely manages to block, and we are sent into a constant clashing of blades. He tries to use magic to gain the upper hand, but it's weak. And the constant use of his magic is causing the demons he controlled to start breaking away, his hold over them fading.
Blocking one of his swings, I get lower than his center of gravity and collide into him, pushing him up and off of his feet. He lands a few feet away, dropping his sword in the process.
His purple eyes, desperate and pleading almost inspire pity inside of me, almost. Suddenly, he throws his hand up, showing me his palm. A purple spark of magic appears before dying out and fading away.
"You've run out of magic this time," I say, backing away as the previously controlled demons close in on him.
They run at him, spreading their shadows in nearly every direction as the begin to attack. Suddenly, a kicked back Natalia falls to the ground, and I catch the site of Katyusha on the golden dragon with her foot raise. The long-haired sister falls to the ground, and from the immense height, dies upon landing with shatter bones and a painfully distorted body. The demons, apparently starved while under the control of Ivan, close in and begin to feed on her as well.
Katyusha and the great dragon land next to me, the dark princess sliding off of the sleek back of the beast. She comes to stand next to me. "The battle isn't over," she warns.
"I know," I say, watching the dark mass start to build in front of me. "They're combining," I murmur.
She nods, loading her crossbow and warily eyeing the monstrosity that is forming in front of us. In this state, it's indestructible. We have to wait until it's done forming.
"I didn't want a normal husband anyway," Alfred says, coming to stand beside me with a drawn sword.
"Yeah, normal is too boring for the awesome me," one of his knights agrees, holding hands with Prince Mathew as they both draw their swords.
"Then, let us finish this," the great dragon says, raising his golden head to the sky and letting a stream of fire stream from his maw.
We take our places right as the blood red eyes of the new creature begin to open.
