What I Never Knew

Phoenix's P.O.V.

What was taking him so long? I was getting tired of waiting. I finally saw his blue hoodie and slicked staff in the distance. "What exactly took you so long?" I asked, crossing my arms.

"I was . . . busy," he said and scratched the back of his neck, laughing nervously.

"Uh huh," I examined, looking at him from head to toe. "Got it."

"So what did you call me here for?" he asked. "I kind of have to head back."

"I dunno. I was bored. But since you're here . . ." I enveloped myself in flames and transformed into a phoenix. I flew over him, spreading fire around him. "Might as well challenge you."

"Oh you are on!" he said and took off. I shot fire in his direction and he dodged it. He shot ice from his staff and I, too, dodged it. I flapped my wings in his direction and a blazing gust of wind was thrown in his direction, knocking him off balance. He eventually regained his balance and shot icicles in my direction. I melted them and dove straight for him. This challenge would end in a victory.

"I have to go," Jack said, stopping in the middle of the race. We had stopped the challenge. Naturally, I had won.

"Are your Frosty senses tingling?" I asked mockingly. He gave me a 'what the heck?' face then rolled his eyes.

"No I just- I have to go. I'll meet up with you later." With that, he left.

"Fine," I said and flew down.

Jack's P.O.V.

"If you need anything, just call for me. I will be right there," I said to Elsa. I had to go meet up with Phoenix. I had kept Phoenix a secret and Elsa a secret from Phoenix. They knew absolutely nothing about each other.

"Okay. Come back soon," Elsa said, waving to me. I smiled and flew out the window to the gathering place I had with Phoenix.

"What exactly took you so long?" she asked, crossing her arms. I didn't want to tell her about Elsa just yet. It wasn't the right moment.

"I was . . . busy," I tried covering up. She looked at me up and down skeptically.

"Uh huh. Got it."

"So what did you bring me here for? I kind of have to head back," I said. I was getting worried about Elsa. What if something happened but she forgot to tell me? Chill, Jack. She's probably fine.

"I dunno. I was bored. But since you're here . . ." She made a flapping motion with her arms and they bursted into flames. She shot fireballs at me, which I easily avoided. "Might as well challenge you."

"Oh you are on!" I said and took off. She shot a few more fireballs at me and I dodged them. Was that all she had? Seriously? I thought she was better than this. I shot ice in her direction but she, too, avoided them. This was going to be a long battle.

❄☀❄☀

We had already started racing when I felt a slight change in temperature. I stopped and looked around. Not too far from where we were, it had started snowing. That was the way to the ice castle Elsa had built. Something wasn't right. "I have to go," I said.

"Are your Frosty senses tingling?" Phoenix asked me mockingly. Seriously? What the heck? I rolled my eyes.

"No I just- I have to go," I stated simply. "I'll meet up with you later." I left her and went for Elsa. I hope she's okay.

❄❄❄

I stepped in through the open balcony when I saw Elsa strike Anna with her powers. In the heart. "Elsa!" I yelled, worried. She had been calming down from the tension built up within her. But she didn't know what she had done to her sister. Anna's legs gave in and she collapsed on the ground, weak. She held her hand to her chest and held herself up with the other one. Elsa turned and gasped. From the looks of it, this had not gone well. And something tells me this will get worse.

Elsa's P.O.V.

"Where are you going?" I asked Jack.

"I have to go meet up with someone. If you need anything just call for me. I'll be here as quick as possible," he replied.

"Come back soon," I said and waved goodbye. He smiled and flew out the balcony. Some time for myself. I smiled and looked up. This castle really was beautiful. I decorated the walls and ceiling a little more. Until I heard someone call for me it wasn't Jack though. This voice was a female voice. It sounded a lot like Anna.

"Elsa? It's me, Anna." I stopped what I was doing and walked downstairs. Sure enough, it was Anna. But what was she doing here by herself? She was trying to get her balance on the ice.

"Anna," I said softly. She looked up at me, eyes shining with the ice.

"Woah. Elsa, you look . . . different. It's a good different," she added quickly. "And this place. It's amazing," she contemplated, looking around.

"Thank you. I never knew what I was capable of," I said.

"I'm so sorry about what happened. If I had known-" she began.

I flinched but finally interrupted, "No, no, no. You . . . you don't have to apologize. But you should probably go. Please." I rubbed my hands together.

"But I just got here," she said sadly. It was true. I was already kicking her out of my castle. But she didn't belong here. Only I did.

I moved away from her and explained, "You belong down in Arendelle."

"So do you," she said, moving up a step.

"No, Anna. I belong here, alone, where I can be who I am without hurting anybody." I folded my hands and placed them on the glass surface in front of me.

"Actually, about that-"

"59, 60!" I heard something say from outside.

"Wait, what is that?" I asked, moving my attention to the door.

"Hi! I'm Olaf and I like warm hugs!" a snowman exclaimed, bursting in through the doors. Olaf. The snowman I had built with Anna when we were younger. But how?

"Olaf?" I asked him, not believing what I had done. I brought a lifeless creature to life.

"You built me. Remember that?" he asked innocently.

"And you're alive?" I asked, speechless.

"Yea, umm, I think so," he said innocently, closing and opening his stick hands. He made it sound like a question. I looked at my hands, amazed at what I had done. I created life!

"He's just like the one we built as kids," Anna said happily.

"Yeah," I said, looking up at her. I still couldn't believe it.

"Elsa, we were so close. We can be like that again." That brought me back to the day. The day my life ended. The separation. The memory haunts me to this day.

Flashback

Me: Wait! Slow down! *slips on ice and falls*

Anna: *jumps off final pillar* Woo!

Me: Anna! *strikes her in the head with ice*

I breathed heavily and moved back. "No. We can't. Goodbye, Anna."

"Elsa, wait."

"No, I'm just trying to protect you," I said, turning away from her.

"You don't have to protect me. I'm not afraid." I didn't turn back. I continued walking upstairs. "Please don't shut me out again. Please don't slam the door. You don't have to keep your distance anymore. Because for the first time in forever I finally understand. For the first time in forever we can fix this hand in hand. We can head down this mountain together, you don't have to live in fear. For the first time in forever I will be right here," I heard her sing behind me. She didn't understand. I didn't want to go back. I didn't want to hurt anyone.

"Anna," I began, turning to her. "Please go back home. Your life awaits. Go enjoy the sun and open up the gates."

"Yeah but-"

"I know. You mean well but leave me be," I said, walking to the balcony. "Yes I'm alone, but I'm alone and free!" She caught up to me and I turned back, going back into the castle. "Just stay away and you'll be safe from me."

"Actually we're not," I heard Anna chime behind me. What did she mean? Why wasn't she safe? I turned to face Anna.

"What do you mean you're not?" I asked, pulling my cape out of my way.

"I get the feeling you don't know," she said, sounding like she was stalling. I rolled my eyes. Why wouldn't she just tell me?

"What do I not know?"

"Arendelle's in deep, deep, deep, deep snow." What? I couldn't believe it. She didn't seem like she was lying. She sounded pretty truthful to me.

"What?" I asked, moving back.

"You kind of set off an eternal winter everywhere," she explained.

"Everywhere?" I asked, starting to panic. How could I have been so dumb? I felt my hands tingle with my powers and the room got colder.

"Well, it's okay. You could just unfreeze it," she said optimistically.

"No I can't. I-I don't know how!" I admitted. It started snowing. I lost all control over my powers.

"Sure you can. I know you can," Anna encouraged, smiling. No I couldn't. I couldn't do it. I didn't know how! "For the first time in forever," she began again.

"I'm such a fool I can't be free!" I sang, turning away from her. A growing blizzard swirled around me and I didn't want her to get hurt. "No escape from the storm inside of me."

"We can work this out together," she continued.

"I can't control the curse!" I sang, drowning out Anna's voice. I held my hands to my chest. The storm surrounding me was getting stronger by the second.

"We'll reverse the storm you've made," she encouraged.

"Anna, please, you'll only make it worse! There's so much fear!" I sang, running my hands through my hair, looking at my reflection in the ice. "You're not safe here!" I sang, turning to face her.

"We can fix this thing together."

"No." I felt all of my apprehension and anxiety fill up within me, wanting out. The snowstorm was revolving around me now.

"We can change this winter weather. And everything will be-"

"I can't!" I turned, opening up my hands and arms. I felt my entire body tingle as I released all my energy. All of the snow around me was sucked in and pulled out with maximum force.

I faced the wall of ice behind me and cooled down. Just then, I heard someone call for me. "Elsa!" It sounded a lot like Jack's voice. But I stayed in my position, breathing deeply to control myself. Then I heard something like a grunt and something hit the ice. I turned and saw Anna on the floor, her chest glowing white, and gasped.

"Anna!" a blonde man called, rushing in to aid her. I just watched as he helped Anna up, not knowing what to do. "Are you okay?" he asked Anna.

"Yeah, I'm okay," she replied softly. He helped her up until she could finally stand. "I'm fine," she said, a little more firmer than before.

"Who's this? Wait, i-it doesn't matter, just," I stuttered, waving my hands to shoo away the question. "You have to go," I said firmly, pulling my hands away from them.

"No. I know we can figure this out together," she said, taking a step forward.

"How? What power do you have to stop this winter? To stop me?" I heard a crackling noise and immediately knew that my powers were getting out of control once again. Once the man noticed this, he had a panicked expression.

"Anna, I think we should go."

"No. I'm not leaving without you, Elsa," she said.

"Yes, you are," I choked out with a shaky voice, tears welling up in my eyes. I made an exploding motion with my hands and stumbled back. In front of me, a giant snowman was slowly building. When I say giant, I mean giant. He grabbed hold of Anna, Kristoff, and Olaf and carried them down the stairs and out of the castle. A few feet away from me, I saw Jack looking at me, a sad expression on his face. I stayed in place, not wanting to move. Outside, I heard a roar. "Jack, I don't know what to do," I said, starting to panic. I was terrified. I had just hurt my sister. Not in the head, in the heart.

"Elsa, calm down. You'll be fine."

"But Anna won't!" I replied quickly, tears brimming in my eyes. "What have I done?" I put my head in my hands. Now Anna, the only family I had left, was freezing to death. Just like before. There was nothing I could do.
