The basket floated through the water, never seeming to stop, as if it was steering itself over the green ocean waters and to the island beyond.

Jake was watching the waters, as I'd he knew a reply was coming. But he didn't. He doubted that anyone would want to be his friend.

He saw the basket floating back, and watched it come back with curiosity.

He picked it up when it hit the soft sand, and took the top off.

He saw the paper laying in there, and the simple reply.

He picked it up and read: "Sure, I'm Maria."

He smiled wider then he ever had before.

He grabbed a new piece of paper and wrote, "Yay! You actually want to be my friend! Wait...you do, right?"

He gently placed it back in the basket and pushed it back into the water, and it soared over the water again, back to Maria.

Maria didn't notice it at first, and kept poking the sand with her finger.

She heard a rippling noose and looked up, to see the basket bump into the sand.

She brushed her long brown hair out of her face, and picked up the basket.

She took the top off and read the message.

She laughed, and wrote on the back: "Of course I do. I've always wanted a friend; but no one wanted to be mine."

She placed the paper back in the basket and pushed it back into the water.

They talked for hours, getting to know eachother better.
When the basket floated back to Maria, she had a crazy idea.

She wrote: "Here's a crazy idea: we should meet each other- face to face."

She sent the message, and waited for the basket to come back.

When it did, it had the message: "Are you crazy? No one from either of our islands has ever seen- or talked- to one another!"

She sighed and wrote: "I guess you're right. It's just......I got my hopes up. That's all."

When Jake got the message, he sighed.
He wrote: "Alright. But you're going to have to swim."

When the message came to Maria, she smiled and wrote: "Oh, this is going to be historical."

So yeah!
