CHAPTER TWO, crazy night continues
Bailey looks nervous. "She doesn't like The Everly Brothers?"
"It's not your fault." Hazel reassures her. "That guitar just means a lot to her. And it's been hard on her...It's been hard on all of us lately." She explained.
"I can do Doobie or Jonas." Bailey suggested as the boys put their instruments up.
"Bailey, the band isn't the problem." Hazel reassured her.
Beau walks over to the room Cassidy locked herself in. "Cassidy? Cassidy, baby, open the door."
Bailey glances at Hazel and the others with concern and confusion. "What's happening?"
"Honey, please." Beau tried to get Cassidy to open the door.
"I got ten bucks on her not opening it." Dylan comments, earning a slap to the shoulder and a warning look from Hazel. He winces and shrugs. "What?"
"Not the time for that." Hazel glared at him. She looked sad and worried about Cassie and she felt bad. She couldn't imagine what she was going through. She'd probably be feeling the same way if it was her mother. She felt similar about her brother. She missed him and she'd give anything to have him back. Though she had never lost a parent, so she had no idea what that felt like. She couldn't imagine the pain that Cassidy was going through.
"Sweetheart, this has gotta stop." Beau spoke.
"What's gotta stop?" Bailey whispered to Hazel and the others.
"You keep saying you're fine, but this is not a good indication." Beau voiced.
"What she's indicatin' she's not fine about?" Bailey asked.
"Honey, it's been almost two years since your mama passed." Beau reminded his daughter and Bailey's eyes widen in realization. "Please, just stop shuttin' us out. Baby?"
"I think maybe she needs a woman's touch." Summer suggested.
"I'm uppin' it to fifty." Dylan grinned, earning another slap to the shoulder from Hazel.
"Funny," Hazel admits with a chuckle and he grins at her. She points at him. "But not nice."
Summer switches places with Beau, knocking on the door. "Cassidy? Cass? G-friend?" She kicked the door and sheepishly smiled after it didn't work.
"I don't know what to do anymore." Beau sighs. "I mean, what am I supposed to do? She won't talk to me or a psychiatrist. She won't even cry. She hasn't shed one tear since her mama died, and that's not normal."
"Come on, Bailey. Let's keep goin'." Tuck suggests, gesturing to the guitar he held. "We were cookin'."
Bailey furrows her eyebrows, turning to face him. "What about your sister?"
Tuck points towards the room she was in, looking upset. "She's the reason we can't play."
"Tuck!" Beau scolded.
"I'm sorry, daddy, but it's been two years." Tuck apologizes, looking back at Bailey. "We had a band with our mama, but since she died we haven't been allowed to touch these instruments." He angrily points towards the door. "Because of her." Hazel frowned, glancing at him with sympathy. She knew how upset he was about this and she hated she couldn't do anything to help.
"Tuck, enough." Beau demanded.
"I agree." Tuck nods, walking over to him. "It is enough. For two years, we've had to watch everything we do and say in front of her. Don't mention mama in front of Cassidy. Don't play music in front of Cassidy. Well, we lost our mama too. Why does our whole family have to live by her rules?" By the end of his speech, he had tears in his eyes and his voice was raised. His siblings looked upset as well by the time he was done talking and Hazel didn't blame them. She was sad too, she could understand how they were feeling. She knew the pain they were feeling and she'd give anything to take that pain away.
Then suddenly the door to the room Cassidy was in opened and Cassidy was crying. Hazel had a surprised look on her face. She never seen Cassidy cry in so long and a sad look replaced the surprised one as her heart ached. Cassidy then ran out of the basement, holding her mom's guitar.
Tuck shakes his head, looking guilty on top of sad. Hazel stands by him, putting a hand on his shoulder to comfort him. Tuck frowns, glancing at Hazel. "I shouldn't have said those things. It's not her fault."
"No, but what you said was right. It's not fair for her to make your guys' life like that." Hazel replied, glancing at the door Cassidy ran out of.
"I'm going after Cassidy." Beau announced and started going up the stairs.
"Daddy, no!" Chloe cried out, running over to him. Beau stopped, kneeling down in front of Chloe.
"I'll go, daddy." Brody offered.
"No, I will." Tuck argued, setting his guitar down.
"No, none of y'all are going out there." Beau protested.
As they argue over who's going and who's not going, Hazel sneaked away from them and goes up the stairs. She couldn't believe she was even doing this. She could feel her heart raced more. She guessed she cared a lot about Cassidy to go against her fears. But she was not letting her be alone in a tornado. Once she made it outside, she immediately felt her heart pound against her chest and her hands shaking. The storm was so much louder now and it took everything in her for her not to run back inside.
She notices the back door is open and so she braves the storm and runs outside. She follows Cassidy's footsteps in the mud, stopping when she saw the footsteps stop at the barn. "Cassidy!" She calls out as she steps inside. "Cassidy, I know you're in here! I cannot believe I'm out in this storm for you right now! You know how much I'm terrified of them, but I care about you. I don't want you to be hurt."
"Go away!" Cassidy called out, her voice faint. Hazel smiled a little though, hope filling her since that meant Cassidy was in the barn somewhere.
Back in the basement, Bailey had noticed Hazel snuck out so she went out to get her and Cassidy. When she got to the barn, she gasped when she saw Hazel. "Hazel!" She said worriedly and rushes over to the teenage girl. Hazel was laying on the floor, stuck under a wood plank from the roof. Part of it was on her right ankle so she wasn't able to move. "What happened?" She asked, kneeling by Hazel and looking at the girl in concern.
"I was looking for Cass when a tree branch fell through this part of the roof." Hazel points at the tree branch hanging half way in the broken part of the roof. She glances at her ankle stuck under the wood plank and grimaces. "And now my leg is stuck."
"Hold on, I'll get you out of there." Bailey said and got up, going over to the tree branch and she tried her best to lift it up. It was too heavy for her though which makes her sigh heavily, glancing back at Hazel apologetically. "Okay, maybe not."
"Go find Cassidy." Hazel tells her, sending her a reassuring smile. "I'll be fine." She said despite her shaky voice. Bailey hesitated, but nodded and got up to continue looking for Cassidy.
Meanwhile back in the basement, Tuck noticed both Hazel and Bailey were gone. Tuck left the basement to find Hazel despite his dad's protest. Tuck didn't care that going out in the storm wasn't safe, his best friend and his sister were out there and he wasn't going to leave them out there alone.
"Hazel!" Tuck calls out as he reaches the barn. He followed the multiple footsteps in the mud that led to the barn and he was relieved to see Hazel. He was worried though at seeing she was trapped under apart of the roof that fell. "Hazel!" He worriedly exclaimed, rushing to her side and kneeling by her.
"Tuck." Hazel says, looking surprised. "What are you doing here?" She asks, wincing in pain when the weight on her ankle shifted. "You should be inside."
"You think I'm gonna leave you out here?" Tuck retorts, looking offended. "You're insane." He teases and she chuckles. "Now let's get you out of here." He tries to move the plank off her ankle, but it was a lot more heavy than he thought it would be. And suddenly Hazel had tried to bite back a grimace when the weight on her ankle shifted and moved the wood plank, the pain making her groan and her hands shake. He stopped immediately, not wanting to cause her any more pain.
"Starshine, I know you're hurting, but I think I can get this off you if you help me." Tuck tells her, taking a hold of the plank with his hands. Hazel hesitated, but nodded. She was in a lot of pain and wanted it off her as soon as possible. "Okay, on the count of three. One...Two..." On two, they both tried to lift the wood plank. Hazel had her hands on the wood plank, trying to lift it and she grit her teeth in pain as the weight on her ankle shifted. But she pushed through it and helped Tuck lift the wood plank. As it was lifted off her ankle, Hazel felt relief fill her when the pressure on her ankle was released. The wood plank is tossed to the side and she was so relieved to be free from it. Tuck sighed with relief and he moved over to kneel by her, his hands moving to pick her up bridal style.
"Come on, let's get you out of here before anything else falls." He told her and he carried her bridal style, his arm supporting her legs and her own arms wrapped around his neck. They left the barn and went back into the house.
When they got back to the basement, the others were rightfully concerned for Hazel. They all exclaimed her name worriedly or gasped at seeing how bad her leg was injured.
"Oh dear!" Summer exclaims worriedly. "What happened?"
"Part of the roof of the barn fell when I went looking for Cassidy and I got trapped." Hazel explained with a wince as Tuck carefully sat her down on a nearby cooler and he had apologized, grimacing when he saw she winced. He brought a nearby bucket, turning it upside down and then rested her injured leg on top of it. Brody then stood by with a towel to start wiping off the blood off her leg and then put pressure on the wound to try and stop the bleeding, causing her to grit her teeth in pain.
Her hands shook as her eyes filled with tears. "This hurts so freakin' much."
"I know, I'm sorry." Brody apologizes, looking sympathetic and concerned. He didn't want her to be in pain, but he had to stop the bleeding and keep pressure on the wound. "You're gonna be okay, Zel. Don't worry." He assured her.
"We'll get you fixed up, Hazel." Beau assures her. "Where's Cassidy and Bailey?" He asked.
"Bailey went to look for Cassidy in the barn." Hazel responded, her hand gripping the sides of the cooler tightly. She bit her lip hard as tears blurred her vision. She couldn't believe the day she was having. Her worst fear happened twice today. First a bad thunderstorm, then a tornado warning, and she almost died because of a part of the roof fell on her. And now her leg hurt so bad.
"We will get you to a hospital tomorrow, but for now let's focus on stopping the bleeding and cleaning the wound." Beau instructs Brody to continue applying pressure while he grabbed the first aid kit to find some antiseptic and bandages. "Brody, keep putting pressure on her wound until it stops bleeding, clean it and put a bandage on it." He orders. "I'm going out to look for Cassidy and Bailey."
After he left, Brody kept applying pressure on Hazel's wound while Summer fetched some clean towels to help clean up the blood. Tuck stayed close to Hazel, offering her words of comfort and support as Brody worked on her leg. It hurt a lot and tears poured down her cheeks as she held Tuck's hand and gripped the sides of the cooler as she bit her lip hard.
"It's gonna be alright soon, Brody's doin' a good job." Summer commented, sending her a comforting smile. Chloe had moved to sit by the other side of Hazel and was holding Hazel's hand tightly, looking worried.
"Is Hazel dying?" Chloe asks, her eyes widening and she looked scared. "I don't want Hazel to die."
"Of course she's not, Chlo." Tuck assures her with a comforting smile. He glances at Hazel and their eyes met. She offers him a grateful smile and he smiled back, giving her hand a comforting squeeze. "Hazel's gonna be fine. She's just a little hurt right now, but we're taking care of her." Tuck reassured Chloe, his voice calm and soothing. "She's a tough cookie, isn't she?" He added with a small chuckle, trying to lighten the mood. Chloe gave a small smile, nodding and she relaxed, looking relieved.
"Dylan, can you grab me the bandage over there?" Brody asked, pointing towards the first aid kit where the bandage was. Dylan nods and walks over to the first aid kit, picking up the roll of bandage and tossing it to him. Brody caught it with his free hand since he was keeping pressure on the wound with his other one. "Thanks." He murmurs. After the bleeding stopped, Brody set the bandage near him and got the antiseptic and cotton ball ready. He glances at her with an apologetic look and she gulps nervously, knowing what's about to happen. "This is gonna sting a lot."
"I can take it." Hazel said, despite the uncertainty in her voice.
"Alright, you might wanna hold onto something." Brody advises her. "Or someone." He suggested, gesturing to Tuck who was right beside her. She glanced at him and he offered her his hand again. She was hesitant, but eventually took it, squeezing his hand tightly and her free hand gripped the side of the cooler again. Brody carefully started applying the antiseptic to the wound, being as gentle as he could. Hazel grit her teeth, her body tensing up and she squeezed Tuck's hand tighter as a pained sound left her mouth. Her nails dug into the sides of the cooler and tears blurred her vision again as the pain shot through her.
"Hey, look at me, starshine." Tuck says, grabbing her attention. Their eyes met and he gave her an encouraging smile. "I know it hurts, but it's gonna be okay. You can do this, starshine. You're one of the toughest girls I know." His words filled her with warmth and she smiled at him despite the tears running down her cheeks.
"Just keep talking, it's helping." She admitted, her voice strained. She couldn't even feel embarrassed by her admission, she was just so relieved for a distraction. "Please."
"Alright, I will." Tuck agrees. "Anything you wanna hear? You wanna hear my favorite songs, or my favorite movies, or what I would do if I was in a zombie apocalypse?" He joked, trying to make her smile and distract her. She laughed, shaking her head and smiling. He grinned, glad his distraction was working. He kept talking with her, asking her questions and listening intently when she answered them. The entire time, Brody worked on cleaning her wound and bandaging it up. He apologized every time she winced in pain, which was a lot, and he worked as quickly and gently as he could.
The others had chimed in, trying to help distract her too which she appreciated a lot. It meant so much to her that they were trying their best to help her, even if it was something simple like distracting her or keeping her company. It made her feel less scared and in pain, it helped a lot.
By the time Brody was finished, Hazel was bandaged up and the bleeding had stopped. She let out a shaky breath of relief, feeling exhausted from the pain and the adrenaline rush. Tuck stayed by her side the entire time, his hand never leaving hers, offering her comfort and support. She smiled weakly at him, grateful for his presence.
"Thank you, Brody." Hazel murmured, her voice tired but sincere.
Brody smiles at her and nods as he cleans up the medical supplies and puts them away. "No problem, Hazel. Just take it easy, alright?"
Hazel nodded, leaning back against Tuck, who had his arm wrapped around her shoulder now. She felt drained, both physically and emotionally, but she was grateful to be surrounded by people who cared about her. She knew that the storm wasn't over yet, but she felt safe and she knew she was in good hands. She closed her eyes, letting herself relax and focusing on the comforting warmth of Tuck's presence.
"It's alright, you can rest now, Hazel." Tuck murmurs, pressing a gentle kiss to her forehead. "I'll watch over you." He promised and she smiled.
"Thanks, Tuck." She murmured before she drifted off to sleep.
****
When Hazel woke up, she noticed the first thing she noticed was that she was no longer in the basement, but a room. Not her room, it was Tuck's room. She knew that because she had been in this room many times before, especially since they were best friends. The next thing she noticed was that she wasn't alone. Tuck was in the bed too, lying beside her. He must have carried her to his room. He was still asleep and he had an arm draped around her waist. She couldn't help the warm feeling that spread throughout her.
She smiled a little, but then she remembered her leg. She glanced down to see her injured leg propped up on a pillow. Hazel shifted slightly, trying to get comfortable and her leg throbbed painfully, causing her to whimper softly. She bit her lip and tried to hold back a pained noise, not wanting to wake Tuck up. But he stirred anyway and his eyes fluttered open.
"Hazel, you okay?" Tuck asked, concern laced in his voice and he was immediately alert. He sat up and moved closer to her, his hand moving to brush the hair out of her face. She looked tired and in pain, but she sent him a small smile and nodded.
"I'm alright, it just hurts a lot." Hazel murmured, her voice strained. He frowned and brushed her cheek gently, trying to soothe her.
"I'm sorry, starshine. We're probably going to the hospital today since the storm finally stopped." Tuck explains, his tone sympathetic. "We're gonna get you all patched up and good as new, starshine."
"I hope so." Hazel murmurs, sighing softly. She hated hospitals and anything medical, but she knew it was necessary for her injury. "I really, really hope so." She murmurs, leaning her head on his shoulder. "Thank you for taking care of me last night, Tuck."
"Of course, starshine." Tuck whispers, kissing her forehead gently. "I'll always be here for you, you know that."
Hazel smiles, her heart warming. "I know, I'm really lucky to have you as a best friend." She admits, her voice soft. "You've always been there for me, ever since we were kids."
Tuck grins, chuckling softly. "I'm the lucky one, starshine."
Her cheeks turn pink and she averts her gaze. "You're so cheesy." She teased and he laughed, grinning.
"Hey, I'm just being honest." Tuck responded, shrugging.
She laughs and shakes her head, rolling her eyes. "Sure you are."
Tuck chuckles and he moves to kiss her forehead. "Come on, we should probably get ready to head to the hospital soon." Tuck suggests, gently shifting to sit up. "Let me help you get up."
Hazel nodded, grateful for his assistance. Together, they carefully maneuver her injured leg off the bed, ensuring she's as comfortable as possible. Tuck supported her as she stood, her injured leg still throbbing but manageable with his help. Tuck left to get changed and let her get changed as well. She had some clothes she left here before, she had her own drawer here just like he did at her house. It was a lot easier that way.
After they both were done, they went down stairs to greet everyone else. Once he saw she was ready, Beau had offered to take her to the hospital now and she agreed. As they drove to the hospital, Hazel was grateful for Tuck's company. She wanted him to go with her because she hated hospitals and anything medical, but having him there with her would make her feel less afraid and anxious.
As they drove to the hospital, Hazel found herself leaning against Tuck's shoulder, finding comfort in his presence. Despite the pain in her leg, she felt a sense of peace knowing that he was there with her. Tuck, on the other hand, kept a reassuring hand on her knee, offering silent support as they navigated through the quiet morning streets.
When they arrived at the hospital, Beau helped Hazel out of the car, being mindful of her injured leg. Tuck stayed close by her side, ready to offer assistance whenever needed. Inside the hospital, they went up to the receptionist's desk and explained the situation. After getting the paperwork and filling it out, they went to wait in the waiting room.
"Hazel, do you want me to tell your parents what happened?" Beau asked, sitting down in the chair beside her. He was concerned about her, and he knew her parents would be worried about her.
"Yeah, please. And let them know I'll call them later." Hazel responds, leaning back against the chair. "Thanks, Beau."
"No problem." He responded, nodding and pulling out his phone. He sent her a reassuring smile, reaching over to squeeze her shoulder before walking away to call her parents.
Hazel exhaled sharply as she glanced around the hospital. She could feel the anxiety start to bubble up inside her. Her leg throbbed, and not just from the pain. She was nervous, and she hated hospitals. Memories of the night she was here with her older brother flooded her mind. She closed her eyes and breathed slowly, trying to calm herself. She focused on Tuck's presence beside her, his hand still resting on her knee, providing a grounding sense of comfort. She opened her eyes when she felt him squeeze her knee gently, offering her a reassuring smile.
"It's gonna be okay, Hazel," He murmurs softly, his voice filled with warmth and reassurance. "I'm right here with you, every step of the way." He knew she was scared, and he wanted to help her however he could. "I'm not going anywhere."
"I know." She whispers, her voice shaky and uncertain. "Thank you."
Tuck smiles and gives her knee another gentle squeeze. "Of course, starshine." He replied, his tone soothing. He's happy to help her and reassure her. He cares about her so much and he wants her to know that.
Beau returns a few moments later and sits back down next to Hazel. He looks at her with a serious expression, but his eyes are filled with sympathy. "They want to talk to you when you're done with your visit here." He informs her. "They're worried about you, which is understandable and even suggested to reschedule the rest of the trip and come home."
Hazel nods, feeling a little guilty that her parents even thought that. She knew this was a big deal for them and she didn't want to ruin it. "I don't want them to reschedule. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity and I want them to experience that."
Beau sighs and frowns. "But they're worried about you, Hazel, they want to be there for you when you're injured." He argued.
"I know, but I'll be fine." Hazel insists, her voice firm. "I'm gonna tell them that they can keep doing what they planned and besides, I got my grandparents and I got you guys, so I'll have plenty of support here. They don't need to worry about me."
Beau nods, understanding her perspective. "Alright, if that's what you want. But just know, they love you and they want what's best for you."
"I know," Hazel murmurs, feeling a pang of guilt. "And I appreciate it. But I'll be okay, Beau. I promise."
He smiles softly at her, patting her shoulder gently. "Alright, Hazel. Just let us know if you need anything, okay?"
"I will," she assures him, returning his smile. "Thanks, Beau."
They sit in silence for a while longer, waiting for Hazel's name to be called. Tuck stays close by her side, offering her silent support as she prepares herself for the upcoming procedure. Despite her nerves, she feels a sense of gratitude for the people surrounding her, especially Tuck, who has been there for her every step of the way.
Eventually, Hazel's name is called, and she takes a deep breath before standing up with Tuck's help. She glances back at Beau and gives him a reassuring smile before following the nurse to the examination room.
As she waits for the doctor to arrive, Hazel feels a mixture of apprehension and relief. She's nervous about the procedure, but she's also relieved to finally be getting the medical attention she needs. And through it all, she's grateful for the unwavering support of her friends, especially Tuck, who has been her rock throughout this entire ordeal.
"Looks like we won't need to do stitches," The doctor reveals after looking at her injury, causing her to breathe a sigh of relief. "But we'll need to clean the wound thoroughly and apply a sterile dressing. You'll also need to keep weight off that leg for a while to allow it to heal properly."
Hazel nods, feeling relieved that she won't need stitches. She's grateful for the doctor's expertise and follows their instructions as they clean and dress her wound. She's careful to stay still and let them work, despite the pain. She had been given some painkillers before the procedure started, so the pain wasn't too bad, thankfully.
"All done!" The doctor says once the dressing is applied, offering her a smile. "You'll need to change the dressing regularly and keep it clean. Crutches will be provided, and you'll need to use them until the wound is healed. It's important to follow these instructions closely, as infection is a potential complication. You did great, Hazel. Just make sure to follow the aftercare instructions, and you should heal up nicely."
"Thank you, doctor." Hazel responded, offering a tired but genuine smile. She felt a sense of relief wash over her now that the procedure is over. She's grateful for the doctor's expertise and for the support of her friends, who have been there for her every step of the way. Hazel is soon given crutches and instructions on how to care for her wound before she's discharged from the hospital.
Once she's discharged, Hazel and Tuck walk back to the car together. Tuck keeps a steady hand on her lower back, ready to assist her should she need it. Beau is already in the car, and he rolls down the window to check on them. He had gotten the truck to pull up to the front so Hollyn didn't have to walk far.
"You good, Hazel?" He asked, his voice filled with concern.
"Been better." She huffs, pouting at the crutches she was holding. "But at least I don't need stitches."
Beau smiles, looking relieved. "Yeah, that's good. And it'll get better before you know it, Hazel." He reassured her.
Hazel nods, her expression turning thoughtful. "I hope so," She murmurs. "I hate feeling helpless like this." She admitted, glancing at her injured leg. She hated being unable to walk or move without pain, it was frustrating.
"You're not helpless, Hazel," Beau replies, his tone gentle and understanding. "You're strong and you'll get through this. And we'll all be here to help you, don't worry."
"Thanks, Beau." Hazel murmurs, smiling at him. She feels reassured by his words and his support, and she's grateful for his friendship. She had to be honest, she always thought of him as a second father figure. She trusted him and knew he would always have her back. "I really appreciate it."
"Anytime, kiddo." Beau responded, his smile warm and affectionate. He then turned to the front and started to drive the truck back to the ranch.
"Hey," Tuck murmurs, drawing her attention to him. "You did great, starshine. I'm really proud of you." He praised her, smiling fondly.
Hazel felt her cheeks warm and a pleasant feeling fluttered in her chest. "Thank you, Tuck." She mumbled, returning his smile. He made her feel special and appreciated, and she was grateful for his support and encouragement.

(hazel's outfit for this part of the chapter)
"Zel, shouldn't you be restin'?" Brody asked later that day. He, Tuck, and Hollyn were out back while he and Tuck cleaned up the mess the storm had left. They were all in different change of clothes now, having been changed before they got to work.
"Yeah, but I hate sittin' still," Hazel mutters, limping past them. "And I'm sick of havin' my you guys fussin' over me already. You're actin' like I'm made of glass or somethin'." She adds with a small grin, trying to lighten the mood.
Brody chuckles, shaking his head. "We just care about you, Zel. Can't help it."
"I know," Hazel responds, her grin widening. "And I appreciate it, really. But I'm tough, remember? I'll be fine."
Tuck nods, a proud smile on his face. "That's our starshine," He says, giving her a supportive pat on the back. "But if you need anything, you know we're here for you, right?" Brody nodded in agreement, his expression serious.
"Yes, I know," Hazel murmurs. She was touched by their concern and affection, and she felt a surge of love for her friends and family. "I love you guys." She said sincerely, her voice filled with gratitude and affection.
"We love you too, Zel," Tuck responds, his smile warm and genuine. "And we're always here for you, no matter what."
Hazel grinned at him and nodded, appreciating the sentiment. She knew she could count on them, and that gave her a sense of security and comfort. She continued to help them with cleaning up the aftermath of the storm. It was a messy, exhausting process, but it was worth it. She was glad she was able to contribute in some way, despite her injury. Soon enough they all went inside for a break, overhearing that Bailey was staying as the nanny.
"You're stayin'?" Brody asked in a hopeful and excited tone.
"Yes, she's stayin'!" Tuck beamed, grinning at Bailey.
"Hold on. She hasn't said yes yet." Beau speaks up, his gaze landing on Hazel. "Hazel, what were you doing out there? I thought the doctor said take it easy and stay off your leg."
Hazel pouts and averts her gaze, feeling slightly guilty. "I was just tryin' to help." She muttered. She couldn't help but feel a little guilty for pushing herself when she knew she should be resting. She glanced at Tuck, who was giving her a concerned look, and she sighed.
"Look, we appreciate your help, but you gotta listen to your doctor, alright?" Beau said softly, his voice filled with concern and affection. "We don't want you to make things worse. We just want you to get better. And I bet your parents wouldn't like you bein' out there, either."
Hazel winced at the mention of her parents. They had called earlier, and she had reassured them that she was fine. But she could tell they were worried, and she felt a pang of guilt knowing that she had caused them so much stress.
"I know," Hazel murmurs with a heavy sigh. "I'm sorry. I'll try to be more careful."
Beau smiles and reaches over to ruffle her hair. "That's all we ask, kiddo."
She grins and nods appreciating his concern and affection. She glanced over at Bailey, her expression becoming curious. "Are you really stayin'?" She asked hopefully.
"Let me handle this, daddy." Dylan chimes in, glancing at his dad with a smile. He then looks at Bailey with a smile. "Name your price, Bailey. Everybody's got a price. And don't settle. He squeezes the quarter so tight, the eagle screams." Beau sent his son a look and pushed him back.
"But Bailey doesn't want to be a nanny, she wants to be a singer." Summer cut in.
"Well, why can't you be a nanny and a singer?" Tuck asked.
"Yeah, Maria from 'The Sound Of Music' was a singer, a nannny, and a nun." Chloe spoke up.
"That horse has already left the barn." Bailey remarked.
Chloe frowns, looking confused. "I don't get it." Hazel chuckled a little as she moved to sit down at the table carefully, getting tired of standing with the crutches. Tuck noticed this, helping her with the crutches as she sat down. She sent him a thankful smile as she relaxed in her seat. He smiled back at her, standing beside her.
"Good." Beau smiled at his youngest daughter.
"Bailey, if you move in with us, you'll have an even better shot at being a singer. Trust me. You got talent, kid. The only reason you haven't made it is because you've been lacking decent management. But the good news is, you stay here, I'm willing to offer you a mere twenty percent." Dylan explained.
"Managers only charge ten." Bailey pointed out, furrowing her eyebrows at him.
"Fifteen it is." Dylan grinned and shook her hand.
"Well, morning, sleepyhead." Beau greeted Cassidy when she finally walked down the stairs. Hazel was surprised that she had slept in so late. She usually was up early, but she was glad Cassidy had slept in.
"What time is it?" Cassidy inquired.
"Time to celebrate." Brody grinned.
"Bailey's gonna be our new nanny!" Chloe announced.
"Unless you have any objections, Cass." Tuck added. Cassidy is quiet for a moment before she smiled a little at him and he returned the smile.
"But she is not a nanny, Cassidy." Summer speaks up and Hazel rolls her eyes. Summer was trying real hard to not get Bailey to stay. "And I appeal to you, as the responsible lady of the house, do you think it's a good idea to put your life and the lives of your siblings in the hands of someone who's just not a professional?"
"Let me tell you a little story, Summer." Cassidy finally said, placing a hand on Summer's arm. "Once upon a time, we had a chicken named Naomi. Mama named her after Naomi Judd 'cause they both battled depression. Well, we found out the reason our Naomi was so sad was 'cause she was laying fewer and fewer eggs, and started to feel like the best years of her life were behind her. I feel like that's what's happening to Bailey."
"Huh?" Bailey frowned, furrowing her eyebrows.
"I mean, what has she got left? She lost her man, her home, her career. And like Naomi, she's no spring chicken." Cassidy added as she walked over to Bailey.
Bailey grew even more confused and upset at that. "Huh?"
Summer laughs nervously. "What are you sayin', darlin'?"
"I'm sayin'," Cassidy smiles up at Bailey. "We didn't get rid of Naomi."
Bailey's eyes lit up. "So you want me to stay?"
"Well, who else is gonna take you?" Cassidy shrugged.
"No one!" Bailey sobbed. Tuck helped Hazel up to her feet as all the siblings ran over to hug Bailey. The two best friends joined in on the group hug as well.
"Alright, well, welcome to the family, Naomi." Beau chuckled and smiled at the scene.
Hazel was so happy Bailey was staying. She wanted Bailey to achieve her dream, but she didn't want her to leave either. She had been growing fond of the woman, and she knew that Bailey had grown fond of her as well. She hoped that having Bailey around would be good for everyone and hoped that they could all support each other through whatever challenges came their way. With Bailey staying, Hazel felt a sense of relief knowing that she would have another ally in the house, someone she could rely on and confide in. Plus, having Bailey around would bring a new energy to the household, and Hazel was excited to see what adventures they would all have together.
