[Chapter 5] Everybody Talks
The party pt.3: Nuggets perspective.
He made it. The first stage of high school was finally over and completed. And though he still had 3 more years until true freedom, Nugget couldn't be happier.
A lot had changed during his Freshman year, he was no longer the "Weird Kid" like he was throughout Elementary and Middle School. Nugget grew to the height of 5 '10 at 14 and even tried out for the JV football team and had a pretty good chance at making the varsity team. On top of that, Nugget was getting asked out on dates, and both girls and guys were interested in him.
It was obvious to the kids in his group and outside it.
Puberty hit this kid like a freight train.
But Nugget knew they weren't interested in his personality, just his newly acquired looks and height.
At least he had his friends.
Unfortunately, all his friends were in Mrs. Diltons social studies class, he was still stuck in Ms. Applegate's class. After she was released from court-mandated rehab she, for whatever reason, decided it was a good idea to go back to teaching, but this time she was teaching high schoolers. Her career was going fine, none of her students liked her and vice versa but she didn't want to kill any of them that badly. But all of that changed when Nugget and his friends got to high school.
"Nathan! Are you even paying attention!?" Applegate harshly screamed at the blonde teen. The biggest change from Middle School to High School was that his classmates and teachers adamantly refused to call Nugget, Nugget. It still caught him off guard a couple of times since the only person who called him Nathan was his dad.
Thankfully it was the final period of the Friday school day and later that night was Jerome and Monty's party, all his friends were gonna be there, aanndd a bunch of total randoms!
A muffled Drake song could be heard from behind the front door.
Nugget looked down at the shorter twins on each side of him, Lily on his left and Billy on the right, with fear and little concern on his face.
Lily took hold of his hand and gave it a light squeeze. "We can turn back now if you want." the shorter girl looked up at him with those green eyes that never failed to mesmerize him. Nugget shook his hand and gave Lily's hand a little squeeze back.
Even Nugget had to admit that seeing his childhood best friend and crush in a short black party dress. He was trying his hardest for his eyes not to travel farther down from her eyes. His other best friend, Billy, seemed to notice Nugget staring at his sister and let out a muffled snicker from behind his hand and placed his other on the taller one's shoulder.
"Sooo, are we just gonna stand here and longingly stare at each other?" Billy asked sarcastically.
Lily smacked him on the on the arm and marched up to the door and loudly knocked.
Cindy answered the door with a whole bottle of tequila in her hand and a lopsided smile.
"Lily!!!" she gave her a big hug, spilling some of her drink onto the other girl's dress. "And you brought friends~" Cindy moved to the side to let the three into the big house.
The blonde girl led the small group to the living room, handing Lily her half-full bottle before returning to the makeshift dance floor to continue grinding against four different boys and one girl.
Nugget felt out of place in the middle of the living room. There were too many people in one place for his liking, Billy split up from the two when he saw Adrian walk in and ran up to talk to him.
Lily held on to the bottle Cindy passed on to her and started taking small sips a few minutes after attaining it, but within an hour the bottle was replaced with a new beer bottle she was borderline chugging while talking with a few classmates.
Nugget watched as all this happened from the bottom step of the staircase, a full bottle of beer in his hand to give the allusion of him having fun, unable to control his thoughts of protecting Lily from...? Nugget didn't even know he just wanted to get out of there.
He had just recently gotten a handle on his possessiveness of Lily since they weren't even together. Adrian and Penny had told him that Lily was uncomfortable with Nugget's jealousy towards Theo and even Buggs at some points!
So he had to take it down a couple of notches.
So he watched, watched as Lily got progressively more drunk. Dancing with Cindy, slurring her words while talking to Billy, chugging drink after drink.
At some point, while dancing with Cindy, she stood up on the table and started shout-singing the chorus to the pop-rock song blaring on the speakers.
'It started with a whisper
And that was when I kissed her
And then she made my lips hurt'
In the commotion, Billy walked up to Nugget with a concerned look on his face. "I don't think Lily's ok,"
Nugget looked up at his standing friend and smirked up at him. "Friend Billy doesn't say?"
"No I'm serious man," he looked back at his sister. "You need to get her out of here man." Billy looked at Nugget sternly.
Nugget looked once more at his crush, still screaming along to the 'Neon Trees' song. "Nugget doesn't know, The Pretty Lily looks like she's just having fun."
Billy loudly sighed and grabbed Nugget's arm to make him stand and look at Lily from a different angle. "No dude, look."
The two boys stood by the stairs looking on at their drunken friend. Now, from the taller view he was getting, Nugget could see a group of boys surrounding her on the table. Some of them he knew, most he did not. It took all of his willpower not to kill them right then and now.
Lily took one more swig of her vodka bottle and the boys wooed around her.
"Take your top off!" one of them cheered, he immediately received high-fives and fist-bumps.
Nugget focused his mind and stared at the boy who he assumed was a freshman or sophomore. The kid felt an invisible force push him hard on the ground, making him land face-first on the floor.
Nugget had to intervene soon or else the rest of them might get any more ideas.
Nugget and Billy stormed up the circle jerk of assholes, pushing many out of the way.
"Um Lil, I think we should go home soon," Billy spoke meekly to his sister.
The group of guys glared at Billy. "A lady can't make her own choices now?" one of them shouted.
Nugget growled and muttered under his breath, "Lily's clearly not in the right head space to make her own decisions."
"The fuck was that Nathen?!" another one of the douchebags stepped to Nugget. He was either drunk or stupid to see how bad of an idea that was, Nugget was at least a head taller than him and could murder him in a second if he wanted to. But Nugget didn't pay any attention to the moron, he was focused on helping Billy get her down from the table.
Lily stumbled over herself and almost fell, but Nugget caught her just in time.
The teens around him booed and tried to shove Nugget and Billy. Mysteriously, however, all of them felt the need to throw up. A few of them puked on themselves by accident.
Billy looked back, "Did you do that?" the other boy smiled and shrugged "Maybe Nugget did, maybe Nugget didn't."
Billy laughed before 'handing' Lily to Nugget. "I'm gonna stay for a little bit." Billy looked behind him to where Adrian was watching the whole ordeal. Nugget rolled his eyes and nodded to him, giving the other boy permission to go.
The shorter boy looked back down at a drowsy Lily in Nugget's arms and gave her a hug and a kiss on the forehead before looking back at Nugget.
"Don't try anything Country Boy!" he called from behind him while he was walking off.
Nugget rolled his eyes and guided Lily out of the house and onto the front lawn.
They were in sight of the mansion when Lily abruptly stopped walking and looked up at Nugget.
"Nugget?"
"...Yes?"
"You're reeeally handsome. You know that right?" she said in a comically serious tone.
Nugget was dumbfounded and flustered that she would be so upfront about her thoughts, but then he remembered that he was absolutely fucking plastered. "Nugget knows that now. Thank you." he looked away, flustered.
"No like, you're reaally pretty." he chuckled at his crush. "Like, I'm surprised you haven't had a girlfriend yet." the tall boy stopped laughing and looked down at Lily, the flush on his face had gotten bigger. "Maybe Nugget's just waiting for the right girl," he mumbled and looked away.
Nugget didn't know why he said that or even if Lily had heard.
"Alright come on Lils, NUgget has to get you home."
Lily sighed dramatically and went limp. Nugget caught her once more. "My feet hurt!" she looked up with pleading eyes. "Carry me?"
Nugget giggled and scooped her up bridal style.
The two continued to walk down the sidewalk in comfortable silence, Lily and Billy's house getting closer and closer. Once they reached the gate Nugget bent over to let Lily enter the code for the gate, Lily making extra sure Nugget couldn't see the code.
The big mansion gate creaked open and the two walked up the giant driveway.
Nugget put Lily down on her doorstep, their hands connecting on impulse.
"Is Lily sure she's ok?"
"Nugget, I'll be fine. I think the vodka is wearing off now." she shook her head.
"Ok, if the Pretty Lily says so." he began to walk away but small arms wrapped around his arm and pulled him down to his level.
Lily kissed him sloppily on the lips. Nugget's hands are still at his side and his eyes wide open. It was a very ugly and messy kiss.
And honestly, Nugget wouldn't have it any other way.
"Goodnight Nugget."
