🌹The Crimson Tyrant: Chapter 1
That night, as the moon shone brightly in the star-studded sky, the walls creaked and shuddered from the strong winds and inside the bathroom, the sound of dripping water from the leaky pipes could be heard. But the four girls and Grim all lay peacefully asleep in their beds, the sounds going unheard to them.
On Alice's pillow, Grim lay on his back, muttering things like "tuna" and other things in his sleep and purring softly. As Alice, Kira and Grim slept, a faint light suddenly began to glow from the vanity mirror nearby. A soft red light suddenly glowed from within Alice's chest as she started to dream...
"Mmm. Hmm...huh?" Madison slowly stirred awake from her slumber as she felt a hard surface underneath her. She blinked a few times before she snapped herself awake to find herself kneeling in a large rose garden maze.
As Madison took in her surroundings, she strangely felt a sense of déjà vu. She felt that the whole place felt familiar yet unfamiliar. It was as if she had seen it before, but from a long time ago. An unmistakable feeling of nostalgia. Madison stood up and gazed at her surroundings in awe.
"What...? What is this place? How did I get here? I was asleep in my dorm room, right?" she wondered. Seeing that she wasn't going to get any answers just by standing around, Madison gulped down her uneasiness and started to walk through the rose maze.
As she walked down the grassy path, Madison couldn't help but notice that there was something very unusual about the roses. Nothing seemed out of place, and they were beautiful, yet at the same time, they didn't look quite right.
As Madison looked, she suddenly saw a quite unusual sight. Cards. Real, living playing cards. They were all frantically rushing back and forth between the rosebushes with white roses, carrying cans of ruby-red paint as they stopped at one rosebush.
"Hurry and paint the roses red." the Card Soldiers said frantically. "Hurry before the flowers wither!" They all hurriedly dipped their paintbrushes into their paint cans and started painting the white roses red.
"Hurry, hurry! We have to paint them all red!" the Ace of Clubs Card said urgently. "Paint...the roses?" Madison wondered curiously. She then heard footsteps coming from behind her and turned around. She was surprised to see a young, pretty little blonde-haired girl approaching the cards.
She was petite, wearing a sky-blue dress with a pristine white pinafore apron on top, a black ribbon tied into her hair, white stockings and black-strapped Mary Jane shoes. "Oh! Who is she?" Madison wondered. She then heard a soft voice whisper into her ear.
"Alice... the girl's name is Alice..." the voice said. "Huh?!" Madison exclaimed in surprise. "Is that...Alice?! Alice in Wonderland?!" She then paused as her eyes widened. "Wait a minute! Does that mean I'm in Wonderland?"
Madison then turned towards the scene in front of her. She watched as Alice approached the Card soldiers curiously. "Why do you have to paint the white roses red?" Alice asked inquisitively. "Huh?" the Card Soldiers all chorused as they turned to face her.
"Why, you ask? Well, the fact is, Miss, we planted the white roses by mistake." the Two of Clubs Card said. "The Queen, she likes them red, if she saw white instead, each of us would quickly lose our heads." the Ace of Clubs Card added.
"Goodness!" Alice exclaimed as she looked up at another playing card, the Three of Clubs. "Since this is the part we dread, we're painting the roses red." he replied. Curiouser and curiouser. Where in the world is she? Why was she here?
Is this a dream or something entirely different? Madison wasn't exactly sure. She was completely confused as to what was going on. Before she could ponder any further, however, the scene before her faded away into pitch-black darkness.
Finally, Alice leapt awake with a gasp. She sat up in her bed, blinking in confusion when she saw that she was back in her dorm room. "Wait a minute, wasn't I just asleep in the dorm...?" Alice asked, wondering if everything she had just experienced was just a dream.
She stared at the mirror in front of her, but nothing responded to her question. "That was a really strange dream..." she murmured. "Alice in Wonderland? I wonder, why would I—?"
Knock, knock! A sudden knocking sound from downstairs jolted Alice from her thoughts. More hard knocking came from the doors outside the dorm. Alice then felt an extra weight on her shoulder. She turned and saw Grim hanging off her shoulder, grumbling drowsily as he rubbed his eyes and gave out a tired yawn.
"Mmm... Hey, Alice... Sounds like we've got a late-night visitor..." he mumbled sleepily. "What? Is it those ghosts again? They sure don't know when to quit, yanno..." Alice gave Grim a gentle pat on the head when the loud knocking from downstairs came again.
In her bed, Kira groaned as she slapped her hands over her ears, trying to block out the racket. But as the knocking downstairs persisted, Kira finally sat up in her bed and glared at the bedroom door drowsily. She obviously was not happy about being awakened in the middle of the night.
"Seriously! Don't they know what time it is?!" Kira hissed. "If it's a prank, I swear I'm gonna kick his sorry butt!" She prepared to fling herself out of bed when Alice put her hand on hers, stopping her.
"I'll go see who it is, Kira-chan. You go back to sleep." she whispered comfortingly, calming her. "Okay. Just tell him to keep the noise down. There're people sleeping here." Kira grumbled softly before she went back to sleep.
Alice then walked out of their bedroom door and carefully made her way down the stairs to the foyer, right towards the dorm doors. "Now who could it be at this hour?" Alice wondered as the duo approached the doors where the knocking was coming from.
"Probably some prankster looking for a laugh." Grim groused. Of course, to be suddenly awakened at such a late hour by a stranger knocking at their doors, Alice was pretty much cautious as they stood a safe distance away from the entrance. "Hello? Who is it?" Alice carefully asked.
"It's me, Ace. Let me in." a familiar voice said from the other side. "Huh?! Ace-kun?!" Alice exclaimed as she quickly ran towards the doors, jolting Grim off her shoulder. Once Alice opened the door, Ace gruffly stomped his way into their dorm with an enraged expression on his face.
Alice then noticed that the terracotta-haired boy was wearing a familiar heart-shaped black-and-red locked collar around his neck. Grim clung on to Alice's shoulder as Ace let out a small grumpy growl while tousling his hair.
"Ace? What're you doing here this late...?" Grim asked curiously. He then noticed the strange collar around Ace's neck. "Gah?! And what's with the collar?!" he exclaimed. At the mention of the collar, Ace glared at Alice and Grim with a furious scowl on his face.
"Geez! I'm never going back to Heartslabyul ever!" he huffed irately. "Starting today, I'm joining your dorm!" The blonde-haired girl and Grim stared at Ace disbelievingly. "You what?!" Grim cried. "Huh?!" Alice asked in surprise. Why would he say such a thing?
