Prologue 8: First School Time Refresher!

That night, as the four girls settled themselves down in their new dorm, Grim questioned them as to why they would allow him to stay with them. He wondered if the girls had any alternative motives such as being top magicians of Night Raven.

But Jazmin merely shook her head and told him that she and the other girls merely wanted to help him. And Aria told him that they could understand how hard it must feel to try to prove oneself, but no one would acknowledge you for it. The girls then sat at the table and had the supper that Crowley left for them.

Their supper was steaming green onion soup with potato croquettes and a bag of chocolate cookies. It was absolutely scrumptious. "Thanks for the food!" the girls chanted as they all started eating. They even shared some of their food with Grim.

Grim was greatly taken aback for nobody had given him any food before. This was the first time anybody offered to share their meal with him. Even though he gave the girls a strange look, he just shrugged and happily dug into the food.

"All right, girls. Let's go get some sleep. We've got a big day ahead of us." Jazmin said after they've finished their meal. "Hopefully, things will look better by tomorrow." Kira sighed. "That is, if they do look better by tomorrow." The other girls nodded. "Oh, I hope so." Alice said.

And so, the five of them headed upstairs. There were a lot of rooms upstairs, so there weren't any limited options. The girls walked over towards the room at the end of the hall, and they were all pleased to see that it wasn't as dirty as it was downstairs.

After a game of rock-paper-scissors, it was decided that Alice and Kira take the room at the end of the hall whereas Aria and Jazmin take the room next to theirs. As they settled in their room, Alice yawned as she nuzzled into the cool pillow on her bed while Kira patted off some dust from her pillow.

Grim kneaded the sheets with his claws and he gave out a tongue-curling yawn as he curled up at the end of the bed. "Jeez... I still want my tuna..." he grumbled, feeling cheated out of his tuna cans. He turned towards the girls. "You guys still owe me some tuna, so don't forget it."

Alice nodded. "You'll get your tuna, Grim. I promise." she said. "Well, g'night." Grim said as he lay down and fell asleep. Alice and Kira got themselves comfortable in their separate beds. "Honestly, I feel really scared, Kira-chan. Will we ever see our families again?" Alice asked shakily as she looked up at the ceiling.

Kira looked at her sympathetically. She really missed her home. "Don't be scared, Alice-chan. We'll find a way back home." she said before turning serious. "Whatever it takes, we will see our families again. I promise." Alice nodded. "I hope you're right, Kira-chan." she said as she turned off the light. "Good night."

"Good night, Alice-chan." Kira replied. Alice then turned to the sleeping Grim. "Good night, Grim." she whispered. As the four girls lay in their beds, their minds wandered back to their old world and thought about their families before sleep overtook them.

Hopefully for them, tomorrow might bring much better results.

The very next day, as the morning sun rose into the sky, the four girls were still tucked in their beds, sleeping peacefully. Even Grim slept soundly near Alice's pillow, having now rolled over onto his back, purring softly in his sleep and mumbling something about tuna.

Suddenly, three pale white figures emerged right through the door, one by one. They floated over towards the two sleeping girls and cat monster and hovered above them. "Heeheehee... Don't you three have to be up to clean the school?" the skinny ghost giggled playfully.

"Hmm?" Alice hummed sleepily as she slowly opened her eyes. When she saw the three ghosts she and her friends had banished the previous night hovering near her bed, Alice gasped in shock and quickly sat up with wide, frightened eyes.

She gripped at her bedpost fearfully. "What are...?!" she gasped. She turned towards Grim who was still deep in dreamland, undisturbed by her sudden movements. Mustering all her courage, Alice reached her hand towards Grim and gently shook him.

"G-Gr-Grim...! Grim, wake up...!" she whispered fearfully, trying to rouse him from his sleep. But Grim continued to snore. "Unnn... munyaaa... Five more minutes..." he mumbled in his sleepy state. He really was like a cat.

"Grim, please! You need to get up!" Alice pleaded. Suddenly, the fat ghost and the short ghost both began to snicker at the cat gremlin. Alice backed away fearfully as the three ghosts grinned at each other mischievously and leaned down towards the sleeping cat monster.

"Laze about too long and you'll never wake up again." the short ghost snickered. "Just like us! Eeeheehee!" the fat ghost added as he laughed creepily. Upon hearing their creepy voices, Grim sleepily opened one eye.

Once he saw the three ghosts hovering above him with mischievous grins on their faces, he immediately shrieked in surprise as he sprang awake, falling out of the bed. "Ffgya?! It's those ghosts again!" Grim shouted as he immediately stood up and turned towards Kira's sleeping form. "Hey, you, wake up!!"

Kira groaned drowsily as she sat up in her bed. "What, dude?!" she grumbled sleepily as she slowly opened her eyes. When she saw the three ghosts hovering near Alice, Kira gasped in shock as she tumbled out of bed. She immediately leapt to her feet and rushed to Alice's side.

"Get away from her, you dead dorks! I know judo!" she threatened, shielding Alice while holding her hands up defensively. Meanwhile, Alice held Grim in her arms. "If you dare try to harm Alice-chan, I'll rip you all to shreds!"

"Whoa, whoa, whoa!" the short ghost cried. "Take it easy! We're not here to hurt ya, kids!" The girls and Grim all paused as they looked at him in bewilderment. Really? They're not going to hurt them? "Y-You're not?" Alice asked in surprise.

"Nah! We just wanted to welcome you to our home!" the skinny ghost replied. "Yeah!" the fat ghost added. "You're new students here, right?" Alice shook her head. "Well, no... not really." she answered. "We're just staying here for the time being."

The ghosts cackled mischievously. "I hear you five live here now, hm? You're gonna get pranked. Kekeke!" the skinny ghost cackled mirthfully. Grim grumbled at him. "Shoot. We'll get rid of you eventually!" he snarled, glaring at the three ghosts.

"Oh, but where are our manners?" the skinny ghost said. "Allow us to introduce ourselves! I'm Stretch!" The fat ghost was next. "I'm Fatso!" he exclaimed. "And I'm Shorty!" the short ghost declared. "And you ladies are?"

"Alice... Alice Liddell. And this is Kira Ironclaw. A pleasure to meet you." Alice, said, introducing herself and her friends. "And I'm the Great Grim!" Grim proclaimed, crossing his paws. "Nice to meet you!" Stretch said. "By the way, we sincerely apologize for scaring you last night." Shorty said.

"Yeah! It's not often people come here anymore! It's been a long time since we've had anyone around. We've been feeling kind of lonely in this old dorm." Fatso agreed.

"I see." Alice replied as she and Kira looked around, but then they turned their attention back to the ghosts. "Wait... so... you're not going to hurt us or haunt us or anything?" Kira asked hesitantly.

"Hahahahaha!" Stretch laughed. "Good heavens, no! We're not like those other ghosts. We're actually really friendly when you get to know us!" Kira nodded. "Huh. Who ever knew?" she muttered.

"So... does this mean we're safe?" Grim asked. "I guess so." Alice replied before she felt her stomach rumble softly, causing her to place her hand over it. That's when she noticed that she and Kira were still wearing the same flowy robes from last night.

"Did we actually sleep in there last night?" Alice asked. Kira sighed. "I doubt they have any clothes for us girls." she said as she got out of bed. "Oh, I almost forgot! Today's the day we have a job to do." Alice said, following her. "Yeah, it's the day we become the school's "handymen"." Kira huffed in annoyance.

The two girls and Grim were about to walk out of their bedroom door when they nearly crashed into Crowley who startled them. "Oh, Headmaster Crowley!" Alice exclaimed. Crowley, who was always as happy as a clam, smiled at the girls.

"Good morning, ladies! Did you sleep well?" he asked jovially. "I was sprawled out then fell out the bottom! Just how ramshackle did you let this place get?" Grim replied, grumbling slightly. "Then the ghosts woke me up, this is the worst!"

Kira merely yawned and stretched. "Like a rock." she said. Crowley smiled at them and gave a small laugh. "Quite tough of you despite finding yourselves thrown into another world. Wonderful!" he said, praising them. "I came to speak to you ladies about your work for today."

A little while later, Crowley and the four girls stood in the lounge while Grim lazily reclined in Alice's arms, and from there, Crowley explained to them their duties as the school's new handymen.

The four girls all took a seat on the sofa while he sat on a chair across from them. "Today you five are to clean the campus." Crowley said. "...But campus is quite large. Cleaning every nook and cranny without magic would be impossible. So for today, I'd like you to clean the Main Street area from the main gate to the library."

"Understood?" The girls all nodded. "Yes, sir." they chorused. The other girls, except Kira, were quite thankful that he was having them clean the campus one place at a time. If he didn't, they would surely die from exhaustion within just two days.

"Now, first things first, you four can't possibly work in those robes. They're for ceremonial uses only." Crowley said, pointing at the four girls' ceremonial robes. "Right. About that, we don't have any spare clothes, as you can see." Kira said.

"Worry not!" Crowley exclaimed. "Being as gracious as I am, I've provided you ladies with new work outfits for the duration of your stay!" The four girls all sighed with relief. "Oh, thank goodness." Alice said. "These robes are very pretty, but we would like something more appropriate, if you know what I mean."

"Of course. Also, I have a little gift for each of you ladies." Crowley said. "Ooh! A gift?" Alice asked excitedly. Crowley chuckled as he sat up from his chair and walked over to the girls. He stretched out his open hand towards them. In his hand, they saw four shiny golden bracelets.

"Oh, they're so pretty!" Aria remarked. "Since you four ladies are currently in an all-boys school, it might pose some complications. These magical bracelets will help give off the illusion that you are all boys yourselves." Crowley explained. "That way, you can easily roam around the campus without any problems."

"So, with these bracelets, we can disguise ourselves as boys?" Kira asked. Crowley nodded. "Yes. Exactly." he said. "Oh, sweet!" Kira exclaimed as the girls each took a golden bracelet and slipped it on their wrists. They then felt a thin veil of magic cascading upon them.

Sure enough, their feminine features melted away and boyish features took their form. Their ceremonial robes melted away, turning into brown uniforms. The four girls then looked at themselves, amazed by their transformation.

They were no longer wearing the same robes as they were last night. Instead, now they each wore a brown janitor uniform, complete with a white apron and a pair of penny loafers on their feet. Alice, Aria and Jazmin also had white terry cloth bandanas tied over their long hair. Basically... they all looked like janitors.

"Oh, it looks wonderful on you ladies!" Crowley said. "Truly, my graciousness really is limitless!" Kira's frown deepened. "Graciousness, my foot!" was what she wanted to say, but she just sighed and quietly nodded her head, accepting her fate as it was.

"Wow! You look super cute even as a boy, Alice-chan." Aria remarked, looking at Alice's new boyish face. "And you look very handsome, Aria-cha... Uh, I mean, Aria-kun...!" Alice said, giggling. Aria smiled proudly. "Oh, do I?" she said, cupping her chin.

They then turned to look at Kira and Jazmin. In their masculine forms, they look incredibly handsome enough to melt a lady's heart. Crowley then cleared his throat, gaining back their full attention. "Please keep a close eye on Grim so he doesn't cause a scene like yesterday." he said as he warily eyed the cat gremlin.

"I don't think that'll be a problem. We understand, Headmaster." Jazmin said as she bowed her head. Her friends all followed her example. Crowley smiled in approval, quite impressed that these four young girls were taking all of this so well.

He expected those girls to be jumping at every shadow, crying, screaming and begging to be returned home. But so far, they've all been so calm and have accepted every little thing that came their way...which brought back the question in his mind. Why were they brought here?

"I'm counting on you, ladies. You have permission to have lunch in the school cafeteria. All right then. Work enthusiastically." Crowley said happily. Kira rolled her eyes. "Oh, we will." she muttered sarcastically. "Shh!" Jazmin shushed her.

Crowley then bid the girls a good day with a tip of his hat and walked out the door. The girls then all stood up and dusted themselves off. Jazmin then turned to her friends. "All right, girls. You heard what Crowley said. Let's get to work." she said as she headed towards the door.

Jazmin then stopped and turned towards Grim. "You too, Grim. We should get to work while there's still daylight." she said. But Grim narrowed his eyes and clicked his tongue. "Tsk... No way I'm doing any cleaning." he said, crossing his paws.

"I wanna go to class and use a bunch of awesome spells, like, "bang! Boom, boom, boom!"" He waved his paws in the air, imitating casting some awesome magic spells. The girls all shook their heads in mild amusement at him. Talk about being ambitious.

"Well, we understand you don't want to do this, Grim, but this might be a good start for you." Aria said. "How about this? If you help us out and we finish up sooner, we'll take you to the library so you can look at some spells and practice them. Is that alright with you?"

Grim crossed his paws in contemplation while the girls stared at him expectantly. But then, Grim shook his head. "No." he said simply. "I'll still buy you that tuna we promised you once we get some money." Alice added. Grim's ears immediately perked up. "Deal." he replied. He just couldn't deny having tuna.

"Wait. So we're literally janitors now?" Kira asked skeptically with her hands on her hips. "Yes. Since Headmaster Crowley said so." Jazmin replied firmly as they headed out the door. Kira let out a scoff. "Tch! I don't believe this..." she muttered under her breath.

As the four girls stepped out of their dorm, they noticed a piece of paper left on the doorstep. Aria picked it up and discovered that Crowley had left them a note, saying that he has left them a map of the academy so they wouldn't get lost. How thoughtful of him.

"Oh, so now we're taking orders from the Headmaster? Well, that's just brilliant! We're now scullery maids in disguise. Perfect! Just perfect!" Kira groaned as the girls walked out of the worn gates and walked down the stone path towards campus. "Oh, Kira-chan, please stop your complaining." Jazmin scolded.

"Well, in case he hasn't noticed, Jazmin-chan, we're students, not janitors." Kira replied curtly. She hated the fact that she and her friends would be working themselves to the bone like scullery maids. "Well, even so, Kira-chan, Headmaster Crowley did give us a place to stay for the night." Aria said, patting her shoulder.

"If it wasn't for him, we'd be sleeping out in the cold rain. Besides, the least thing we could do for him is help clean the campus." Kira paused. Aria was right. Crowley may be somewhat eccentric, to say the least, but he truly was a kind-hearted man.

Why else he would he have gone through the trouble of providing them a place to stay, bringing them food and offering jobs for them? "Fine, whatever. Let's just get this over with." Kira said, nodding. With the map and Grim in their hands, the four girls made their way towards the castle.
