Prologue 3: A Cruel Answer

"OFF WITH YOUR HEAD!" Riddle shouted as he waved his magic pen towards Grim. Bright red sparkles glowed around his pen's red gem and a spark of magic flew towards the oncoming Grim.

Alice quickly sprung up to her feet, ready to shout for him to not hurt Grim. But instead of slicing his head off as she thought he would, a black-and-red heart-shaped locked collar magically appeared around the cat creature's neck. "Nygah! The heck is this?!" Grim shouted.

"Law of the Queen of Hearts No. 23, "One shall never bring a cat into a festival."" Riddle coolly informed. "You being a cat means you've broken the rule. I shall have you leave at once." Grim gritted his fangs in anger. "I'm not a cat!!" he shouted, baring his fangs at the wine red-haired boy.

He clawed at the collar furiously. "I'll burn this collar right up and...!" Grim said as he took a deep breath and tried to burn the collar off his neck, but his fire didn't appear. He tried again, but nothing happened. Not even a single spark of fire came to his aid. "...E-Eh? I can't use my fire!" he exclaimed in shock.

Seeing him looking so confused at the sudden loss of his magic brought a smirk on Riddle's face. "Hmph! You won't be using any magic until I remove the collar. Just like an ordinary cat." he said haughtily. Alice looked at the collar and Riddle and she breathed out a sigh of relief.

"Wh-What?! I'm not some pet!" Grim snapped, feeling insulted that someone of his sheer talent and intellect was being treated with such disrespect. He's not just some common house pet, he was a talented magician! But he wasn't fooling anyone. Riddle just narrowed his eyes at him.

"Don't worry, I'd never keep a pet like you." he said to the cat creature. "I'll take it off anyway when you get thrown out." Azul smiled at Riddle. But the girls could tell that there was more to that friendly smile than one would think.

"Wow, as wonderful as ever." he praised. "Any and all magic gets sealed by your Unique Magic, Riddle-san." A greedy glint shone in Azul's sky-blue eyes as he spoke. "I simply must have it..." he whispered before he paused and corrected himself...slightly. "Err, I mean I wouldn't ever want that cast on me."

The four girls then decided that now would be a good time to ask Crowley about sending them back home, and they went right over to him to do just that. "Um...excuse me? Headmaster Crowley, we—" Alice started to say when he suddenly whipped around and gave the girls a heated, disapproving look.

The four girls flinched and backed away in slight fear as Crowley began to scold them. "You must do something about this! It is your familiar, after all!" he chided. "Properly discip...!" That's when Kira's patience finally snapped.

"HE'S NOT OUR FAMILIAR!!!" she shouted at the top of her lungs, making Crowley flinch. "...Eh? It's not yours?" he asked, taken aback by her outburst. Kira rolled her eyes. "Ugh! How many times do we have to tell you?! He was never ours to begin with!" she said impatiently.

"When we woke up here, he was the one who opened my coffin." Alice added calmly. "And we've tried to tell you that he wasn't ours from the start." Crowley paused for a second before he gave an astonished look, feeling pretty embarrassed for falsely assuming that Grim was the girls' familiar.

"Y-You did?" he asked. The girls all nodded. Now that he thought about it, it was impossible for someone without magic to even gain a familiar. After realizing his mistake, Crowley blushed a little before he quickly cleared his throat and regained his composure.

"Ahem! Anyway, let's get it out of the school at any rate. We won't turn you into a stew. For I am gracious." he said, straightening himself up. He then turned towards the students. "Someone help, please."

Two students emerged from the crowd and walked up towards Grim. They grabbed hold of him and dragged him out of the room. "Gyaaaa! Let me go! I'm going to, going to... Become the greatest mage!" Grim shouted at the top of his lungs as he thrashed around, trying to free himself.

But the doors soon closed in front of him. Although he threatened to burn them, and almost set the whole school on fire, all the girls except Kira couldn't help but feel a twinge of sympathy for the poor cat creature.

He was so determined, so desperate to enter into this school that he did all this to prove himself. To show his worth. To show what he can really do. The girls could understand how he felt in some way. "I feel really terrible for him." Alice said sympathetically.

"Hmph! Well, I don't. Good riddance. He was an annoying troublemaker anyway." Kira scoffed. "I wonder why he was so desperate, though." Aria mused. Before anything else could be said between the girls, Alice suddenly felt a searing glare burn into her skull.

As she looked to her right, Alice could see the angry face of Riddle focusing on her being. She could see the fury burning in his eyes. Was it about her pushing him? Maybe it was... but she did it to prevent him from being burned alive. He marched right up to her before she could ruminate.

"You...!" Riddle seethed. Alice jumped in surprise when he pointed his pen at her. "How dare you insult me in such a way!" he shouted. "Wh-What?" Alice asked. Kira quickly held out a protective arm in front of her. "Let me make this perfectly clear. That is the same as insulting the Queen of Hearts herself!" Riddle yelled.

In the back, a young student with orange hair and a student with ivy-green hair and glasses paled. Azul just simply stood by, watching the scene unfold. "That is an unspeakable crime in itself!" Riddle bellowed. "If you had any magic, I would have had your head! Be grateful that my Unique Magic doesn't work on any of you!"

Kira glared at Riddle angrily. He sure was being rude to newcomers! What's his problem?! Alice fearfully glanced at the pen in her face, then at Riddle. But then, a soft smile slowly formed on her face, much to Riddle and Azul's visible confusion.

What was even more confusing was when Alice raised her dainty hand... and gently lowered Riddle's outstretched arm. "I do humbly apologize, sir." she said in a polite tone. "Please forgive us. We weren't aware that such acts were against school rules." Azul's eyes widened while Riddle's face contorted in surprise.

Still smiling her gentle smile, Alice held the hem of her robes out to the side and bent her knees, one behind the other, curtsying before him. "We shall take extra care to avoid breaking such a rule in the future." she said sweetly.

Riddle stared at Alice, completely flabbergasted by her gesture. Azul also stared, just as flabbergasted as Riddle was. Even the girls were a little dumbfounded. Before things could get even more awkward, Crowley quickly cleared his throat and crossed his arms.

"We had a bit of trouble along the way but this brings the entrance ceremony to a close." he announced. "Dormitory Heads, please show the new students back to the dormitories." Crowley then blinked in surprise when he counted six dorm leaders and discovered that one was nowhere to be found.

"... Hm? Now that I think about it, I don't see the leader for Diasomnia, Mr. Draconia, around at all..." he said with a troubled look. The other students followed his gaze and looked at the Diasomnia line. "That's no different from usual, is it?" the lion man said as he smirked.

"What? Did nobody tell him about the ceremony?" the white-haired boy piped up in surprise. "If you're going to complain, you should've done it yourself." the beautiful boy said. The white-haired boy let out a "hmm" sound and crossed his arms pensively. "Hmmm. But I don't really know anything about that guy." he said.

The way they were talking about this Draconia person made the girls curious. It appeared that no one had told him that an entrance ceremony was taking place and they all looked uncertain just talking about him.

Kira took a step forward to ask who he was when she and her friends overheard some of the students whispering. "By Draconia...Do they mean "that" Malleus Draconia?" one student asked. "Is he seriously attending this school?" another added. A third student shivered with apprehension. "Scary..." he muttered.

Scary? Are they all terrified of him? The four girls were now growing ever more curious. Who is this Malleus Draconia anyway? How come nobody told him anything and why were some afraid of him?

The girls tried to speak out their questions when someone new entered the room. The student was a very short individual with short black hair streaked with magenta and cut in bangs. His vibrant raspberry red eyes were the first thing they saw. Even though he looked young, he also seemed old-fashioned.

"Oh, I knew it. I came here to check if my suspicion was right, and sure enough Malleus isn't around." the old-fashioned student said. "It seems the invitation "never arrived" again." The girls all quirked their eyebrows.

"Huh? Again?" Kira asked curiously. "My deepest apologies. I promise, we didn't intend to exclude you." Azul said, although his tone didn't sound like he was very apologetic at all. "His aura makes it hard to approach him." Riddle added. "Ah, who gives a hoot?" the lion man asked dismissively before he yawned.

"Now that this dumb ceremony is over, can I go back to bed, now? I've already missed my afternoon nap." The new boy just sighed and shook his head. "It's fine. Members of the Diasomnia Dormitory can come with me." he said as he called for the students to follow him.

"...I hope this doesn't upset him..." he murmured the last part as he walked. As he started to leave, he took a sideways glance at the girls. The girls all blinked in confusion as the boy stared at them with those inquisitive raspberry red eyes.

They all turned their heads to avoid his gaze, but they then noticed that all the students and dorm leaders were also giving them curious glances. Then, everyone headed back to their dorms. Riddle glared at the girls before he left. And he left some words to consider.

"Pray that you never run into me again." he hissed. Then he headed back to his dorm. Alice kept her face blank, void of emotion. As the girls surveyed the sea of departing students, their gazes then landed on one student in the back.

A teenage boy stood right next to the beautiful man. His blond hair was cut in a bob and his hunter green eyes reminded Kira of a fox's eyes. He then turned his head and his eyes locked with theirs. The girls all felt chills racing down their spines. The teenage boy's eyes then narrowed at them, the sly smile on his face unnerving.

Without uttering a word, he lifted his finger to his lips, making a small shush as he winked at them. Then he vanished in a blink of an eye. The four girls were now left alone with Crowley, and at that moment, they all felt the nervousness come creeping back to them.

Now that everyone was gone...what was going to happen to them?

"Ahem!" Crowley cleared his throat, causing the teen girls to look at him. "Then, ladies, I'm terribly sorry about this but... We must have you leave the school." he said. "And it's not because you all are girls. Those without any talent for magic cannot be allowed to attend class here."

The girls all gave him a nod. That made perfect sense. Why apply yourself to a magic school when you have no magical abilities whatsoever? It was for the best, anyway. At the very least, they would be back in a world that's actually real.

"Yes, but... just how exactly will we be able to go back home?" Alice asked. "Definitely not the same way we came, right?" Kira asked as she shivered at the thought about being trapped in a coffin again. "Not to worry. The Dark Mirror will send you directly back from whence you came." Crowley said assuredly.

He guaranteed them that they will be given a safe passageway home as he led the girls to the Dark Mirror and had them stand in front of it so that he could send them back. "Enter the Gate, and picture your home clearly in your minds..." he said.

"Phew! This has been a long dream." Kira sighed as they stood in front of the Dark Mirror and closed their eyes, creating a mental photograph of their home. The White Sakura Girls Dormitory in Osaka. "Oh, Dark Mirror! Guide these ones back to the place they belong!" Crowley chanted.

The girls all held their breaths as they closed their eyes and clenched their hands tightly. Soon they'll all be back home in their beds. But...nothing happened. Hesitantly, Alice cracked one eye open and saw that she and her friends were still standing in the Mirror Chamber.

"Huh?! Wh-What happened...?"she asked in bewilderment. "How come we're still here?" Crowley was also confused by this. He then cleared his throat and recited his words again. "Once more. Oh, Dark Mirror! Guide these..." he began.

"It is nowhere..." the Dark Mirror said, causing the Headmaster and the girls to look at it in surprise. "Eh?" Crowley and the girls all asked in unison. "The place they belong is nowhere in this world... It does not exist." The girls were absolutely stunned by what they had just heard.

"What?! You gotta be kidding us!" Kira said in disbelief. "Doesn't exist..? But...that couldn't...!" Alice gasped weakly. Their home didn't exist?! How was that even possible?! They all saw the dark horses and the mirror that brought them here!

How couldn't it exist?! Wait...did it say that it didn't exist in this world? Crowley was absolutely dumbfounded by the news that he nearly collapsed. "What did you say? That is unbelievable!" he said as he looked at the Dark Mirror.

Then he paused and held his chin pensively. "Hmm, well, the unbelievable has been on parade today." he said. The four girls turned to face him. "So what happens now? Aren't we able to go home?" Aria asked worriedly.

"This is the first time it's ever happened since I became Headmaster. What should be..." Crowley said as he tried to think of a logical explanation for all this. But no matter which route he took, nothing was adding up. He then turned towards the girls.

"Where exactly did you ladies come from?" he asked. "The truth is...we're from Osaka, Japan." Aria replied. She then went on to explain a bit about Osaka and what life was like there to Crowley.

Crowley listened very carefully, nodding and accepting the information Aria gave him. But as much as that place intrigued him, he was upset to know that he had never heard of it before. "I've never heard of that place before." he said as he placed two fingers on his forehead as if to stop his brain from hurting by thinking too much.

"I have a general grasp of where all the students came from, but I've never even heard that name before." He then looked at the four girls and felt great sympathy for them.

Those poor girls looked so worried and fearful about being suddenly summoned to this school without any warning and they suddenly aren't able to go back home. Here they are, stuck in an unknown world with nowhere else to go. Crowley then clasped his hands together.

"Come. Let's go do some research in the library." he said as turned his heels and started walking towards the hallway. "Don't worry, ladies. I'm sure we'll find something." The girls all looked at each other, unsure of the situation at hand.

"What can we do?" Alice asked. "Can we even trust that old bird dude?" Kira asked. "Well, since we don't have much of a choice, we might as well go along with him." Jazmin said. "Now I know how much we all want to go back home, but as of now, we can't. But Crowley might know a way out of here."

"And what if he doesn't...?" Kira asked, glancing at Jazmin while crossing her arms. "Then we'll just have to go with whatever comes our way. That is, until we find a way to get back home." Jazmin replied calmly. Kira looked at Jazmin hesitantly before her shoulders relaxed.

"Okay, then. I'm all for it." she said before she turned towards the other girls. "You girls okay with this?" she asked. "I am." Aria said. "Me too." Alice added. "Then it's settled." Jazmin concluded.

The four girls took a glance at the Dark Mirror before they followed Crowley back to the library. They prayed to whatever kind deity out there that they would be able to find something within the library, something that might convince them that they won't be trapped in this twisted wonderland forever.
