Chapter 3- Threads That Cross
RECAP:
Harry grins and Louis pokes his dimples, "I know how. She apparently is a YouTube sensation because of singing. Simon even tweeted that she did an amazing cover on our song, 'Moments'! So I thought, hey, why not convince Simon to take her as our opening act of the tour."
There's a silence and I shift awkwardly, thinking they don't like it. It's a freaking dream come true!
"YEAH BUDDY!" Niall cheers and high fives Harry.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The boys agreed and I grinned, excited. If only we can convince Simon Cowell.
"We'll have to check out your YouTube videos." Zayn smirks. I nod my agreement, nervous about how they'll think I sound.
I FEEL SO CLOSE TO YOU RIGHT NOW, IT'S A FORCE FIELD-
I whip my phone out of my back pocket, blushing as the boys chuckled. I really liked that song at the moment. I look at the caller ID and raise an eyebrow because it says it's an unknown number. Which most likely means it's from the hospital. Does dad need me? I click answer and bring the phone to my ear.
"Is everything alright? No one died? Is it emergency? Surgery, uh---" I ramble confused as I walk away from the boys, but they still follow me, intrigued. Ever heard of privacy?
There's an awkward clearing of the throat on the other end, "Is this Eliza Hunter?"
I furrow my eyebrows together, "Uh, yes, why? Does my dad need me?"
There's a slight chuckle, "Well, hi. I'm Laura, the front desk lady in the ward your father, Dr.Hunter works in...the children's ward. He needs you to come as soon as you can."
I furrow my eyebrows more, "Why? Oh gosh. Don't tell me the nurses are sick....again?"
There's a guffaw of laughter on the other line and I groan, "I'm afraid so. The kid you're close with, has gone mad. Christina has been crying ever since she found out she's going to die before Christmas. With her parents dead from the car crash and all...."
I gasp, "What? She has me! She can't die before then! Are you sure?"
She solemnly replied, "I'm afraid so. So please hurry up and calm her down." I run a hand through my hair frustrated. I loved hanging out with the kids, but it was like I was a doctor working there. I felt my heart sinking at the thought of Christina dying to soon. In a month. Too soon for a 8 year old. She'll never live to see her 9th birthday, never have her first kiss, never have kids. My eyes water as I think about it. I felt like she was my own daughter, even though I was 18 and she was 8.
I turn around to face the boys who looked confused, "Thanks for everything and it was amazing meeting you, but I have to go." Harry frowns and the boys nod their head.
"Where?" Louis chirps. Liam slaps the back of Louis' head . "I was just curious." Louis muttered. I laugh and shrug, "It's okay. Just going to head to the hospital. See a kid. See you later."
I wave and walk towards the door. As my hand was about to reach the door nob, a warm hand grips my wrist to stop it. I feel Harry's curls tickling my neck as he was leaning over me and his sweater prickle against my thin shirt that was revealed under the leather jacket. I turn around, slightly blushing.
"Yes?" I ask. He hesitantes then shakes his head, searching my eyes, "Can I come with you?" I look into his green eyes trying to search why, but his face stayed impassive. I shrug, "Okay. But you really better like kids."
He face brightens as he grins, showing his heart-stopping dimples and I have to resist the urge to poke them like Louis did, "Are you kidding? I LOVE KIDS!"
I chuckle, "Good, now let's hurry up. Sprint to the car. Now, go, Go, GO!" I run out the door, giggling to myself with Harry a couple steps behind me, laughing. We run to the courtyard and get to a partly hidden garage I didn't see before. Harry grabs his keys from a key hook and unlocks the black range rover. I hop into the passenger seat and he slides into the driver, turning on the car.
The car roars to life and he pulls out and I tell him the directions to the hospital. He tells me he knows where it is and we make small talk. I interlace my fingers together and lay them nicely in my lap, looking out the window.
"Who's the kid? Are you related or do you volunteer?" He stutters, looking at me from the corner of his eye. I turn my head to look at him even though he can't do that to me and smile.
"Her name's Christina and she's 8. I feel like she's my personal daughter. Which is weird. We aren't related an any way and she has no parents, they died in a car accident, so I guess, I'm considered her mother in a strange way. I volunteer with the children while my dad is one of the doctors in the children's ward of the hospital. I hang out with them and sing with them. It's really fun. In fact, I already went today! But after I visit Chrissy, I'll go look at the newborns. They're so cute!" I beam, day dreaming. There's a silence that fills the car and Harry looks touched and grinning lop-sidely.
I laugh, because no words could describe how funny he looked. He turns his head to me then back to the road. "What? Nevermind." He sighs, "What you're doing is amazing." I nod in agreement and turn to look out the window at the passing scenery.
"Newborns, ey?" Harry asks.
"Oh sorry! Is that okay?" I stammer, hoping it was. They were just so adorable!
He chuckles, "Yes, if I can see them with you."
I grin and salute him, "Your wish is my command, master." He looks at me and grins then looks back at the road. He actually wasn't that bad of a driver.
----------------------------------------------------------------
We just arrived at the children's ward and I frowned, remembering the news I got about Chrissy. That was my nickname for her when I didn't call her other things. Harry sensed my mood swing and grabbed my hand hesitantly and squeezed it. I smiled gratefully at him and I nod to Laura as I walk down the hallway, looking at the room numbers. Harry's moral support was helping me a little. I hear muffled cries coming from Chrissy's room and I slide my hand out of Harry's and put it on the door nob. I look back at Harry who nods me to go on.
I take a deep breath and swing open the door, "Chrissy!" Her head snaps up and she stops crying, her toothy grin smiling at me. "Mum!" Chrissy calls me mum because I see her so much and can't really say my name right, no matter how hard she tries. A nurse smiles at me gratefully and I nod as she scurries out. I walk over to the hospital bed and sit beside Chrissy. She climbs onto my lap, wrapping her limber arms around my neck. I smile softly and wrap my arms around her waist as she cuddles her head into my neck.
Harry silently walks in, closing the door behind him. He smiles at me and takes a seat in a hospital chair by the bed. I kiss Chrissy's forehead, "Hey babe. Look at who I brought? Remember One Direction?"
She tucks her head back and looks back at me with her brown eyes and shakes her head no. Her light redish-brown shoulder length hair swishing around and I chuckle.
"That's what makes you beautiful." I sing softly to jog her memory. A look of recognition crosses her face. She loved it when I sang her that song. She grins, shaking her head up and down. "Well, I brought someone," I smile, gesturing to Harry. "That's Harry and he sings that song."
Harry gets up and sits at the foot of the hospital bed, smiling at Chrissy. "Hi there." He smiles. Chrissy giggles and climbs off my lap and sits right on Harry, who looks taken aback. He smiles and chuckles.
"I'm Christina! Call me Chrissy, Harriet! Smile again!" She cheers. I burst out laughing because she called him Harriet. Harry laughs and Chrissy reaches her hand up to poke Harry's dimples. I chuckle as I remember I wanted to do that earlier. Chrissy giggles and keeps poking his dimples.
"Chrissy, I'm going to get you!" Harry smiled, wiggling his fingers out in front of him. Chrissy squeals and giggles, climbing onto my lap. I chuckle and stick out my tongue at Harry. He grins and leans forward, tickling Chrissy. She squirms, cheering and squealing in delight. I laugh, watching this beautiful scene before me. Chrissy in my lap with Harry grinning, chuckling quietly to himself as he tickled her. He stops and glances up at me, smiling. I blush, realizing I was staring and he chuckles.
I turn my attention back at Chrissy as she calms down and looks at me then to Harry and back and forth. "What's wrong, sweetie?" I ask softly, stroking her hair gently as she sat in between me and Harry.
"Is he daddy?"
I widen my eyes and freeze. She thinks I'm her mom and Harry is the only male that I brought with me. Harry senses my discomfort and smiles at Chrissy, "Yes."
My eyes grow wider and I look up at Harry who is grinning at me. He lied just to make Chrissy die happily, thinking she had two parents even though we weren't even dating and weren't her parents. He lied for me and we just met today.
A grin slowly spreads on my lips as Chrissy cheers and hugs Harry. He kisses her head, hugging her tight. Harry will be a great dad someday. His child or children will be very lucky.
"Don't worry Chrissy. You'll have the very best last Christmas ever." I whisper, my eyes watering and Harry looks up at me, giving me a questionable look.
