Chapter 9 - Behind the Scenes
What happened with their ride was no coincidence. Someone deep on the inside is the one that tipped off the police. Someone under minded and nearly single-handedly picked apart in a single night an entire car stealing organization.
The people Josh and Justin work for locally are taken into custody. Their bosses in Akron have their abandoned location when word gets back to them. Nearly everyone at the top is arrested. The head honcho and less than a handful of loyal car boost specialists manage to escape.
It's the headline of the morning newscast when Josh and Justin watch before they head into work.
"Breaking news this morning out of Huntington, which includes Akron. An anonymous tip-off to the authorities leads to several arrests in both cities. The underground ring of car thefts has been thwarted when authorities round up nearly three dozen people in both cities."
Josh sits there with a gut-wrenching pain telling him that this isn't over. For now, Justin's prayers are answered, but when he calls his cousin, there's no answer.
"Huh, weird bro, Bobby ain't pickin' up his phone. The answering machine isn't even kicking on. Wonder if everything's okay with him."
"We'll head up there after work and check on him. Maybe he got busted with everyone else." Josh whispers, so James can't hear their conversation.
They continue to watch the news and enjoy a cup of coffee before they head out for work.
As the day continues to fly by for once, a steady stream of work comes into the bays. Josh and Justin also head out to wash off the spring pollen that's covering the brand-new Cadillac Escalades.
With a whistle, Josh goes over how nice the large SUV's sparkle in the sunlight.
"Boy, oh boy, I have to say, bub, these are some nice rides." Josh jokingly says with the snap of his hand towel after he rings it out.
Justin only nods in agreement with the buckets in his hands while moving on to the next one.
"One of these days, we'll be top dawgs running this world. Mark my words, bubby, our time will come, and then we'll make our mark." Josh explains, trying to shake that nervous feeling that churns in his gut.
That's when Justin makes a revelation that stuns Josh since it's coming out of nowhere.
"I don't care about making money, bro. I uh, I'm going to get more involved in the church and stuff. After going through all this crap, I am still thinking about becoming a cop when we get out of school. Here lately, being more involved in the church after my prayers were answered seems to be what I need."
"I guess I can see where you're coming from, but as I told you before. I'm sick and tired of being broke. I wanna have me a smoking hot babe and a couple of kids and a nice easy life." Josh explains when Nikki comes to mind.
That's when Justin helps him realize something he has already.
"Well, you have a good woman already. Think about its bro. She's been there through a couple of your toughest times. She's come in to cook for not just you but all of us. She looks at you like I've never seen anyone else look at you. You both go back and forth just to see each other when anyone else would've given up. I will tell you this, my brother and I will tell you this only one time. Relax with what you got now because it could be over in a blink of an eye."
Reality smacks Josh in the face as a comet strikes the Earth. It makes him feel something new inside. The sensation of loss like never known before strikes his heart as a tear nearly forms in his eye.
"Yeah, enough about this, let's get back to work," Josh says, trying to get his mind off what's now his worst fear.
While all that plays out, it'll soon be revealed what happened to their secondary employer. The team regroups over in Canton, away from law enforcement as police still ransack through everything they've discovered.
"WHAT THE BLUE HELL HAPPENED? I want to know who exactly turned us in! I want everyone involved brought to me with their heads on a silver platter! Do I make myself clear?" The Boss yells, getting in his people's faces with his organization virtually decapitated.
"Teddy, I haven't been able to locate or reach anyone down in Huntington. I think they've all got captured. Bobby isn't picking up, and no one knows about his boys' status either. Other than the news, there's not much to go on." One of the street recruiters enlightens him to the grim outlook.
"FUCK! We're going to Huntington today and hide out in one of the other houses. Thank goodness I was smart enough to have one extra off the books. I want what's left of us out looking for Bobby, his two cohorts, and anyone else you recognize. I will get my answers, but my money is on Bobby's boys since they're the last ones brought in. Little bastards almost took me out, and that comes with a price!" He threatens with his anger soaring to new heights.
"Well, I'd figure it might be Bobby. He was acting a little skittish last time he was out scouting. I'll head down now and scope out his place." The recruiter suggests heading for the door.
"If you find him call me as soon as you do! I am not leaving until we can head for Mexico. If anyone has an escape plan or money, get it now; if not, follow me to get mine, and we can get out of dodge. GO...GO!" He screams as they scatter, trying to get any last resources still available.
Unbeknownst to anyone inside that organization, Bobby is, in fact, the one who called the authorities. A couple of days before Josh and Justin set to go out to the garage, his conscious couldn't take watching them dig any deeper into organized crime.
What turned Bobby to give it up was the Sunday before last. He looked over to see Justin nearly in tears while praying. All week he couldn't shake off the nagging sensation, and when he finally snapped, he used a payphone to call in his tip of how it all was going down and where the cars selected would be waiting to be picked off.
The police armed with this information created a quick striking task force. They laid in wait at each location hidden away to see if the tips would pay off. Once the car boosters and the co-riders arrived at each site, they allowed them to pull out before going in for the bust.
During the pursuit going back downtown, the team chasing a late 60's model Nova SS track it to the garage, where they find the chaos trying to evade them in every direction. The state troopers were ready to block off the interstate's ways while city and county authorities chased the others.
Bobby made sure to give the plate number, and driver information about the Lincoln used to deliver Josh and Justin to the garage. Bobby had to make sure that he couldn't pick up the boys, so when it was getting close to that time, he followed the Lincoln sedan and even stole a set of plates from another car to slow down the delivery driver, so police wouldn't miss their chance to catch their man.
After that part, Bobby's plan is complete. He disappeared into the hollow to switch his plates and hightail it home to pack up what could fit into his car. He only left a single letter to Josh and Justin explaining everything but not where he was heading to start over in hopes that he completely crippled the life of crime that he got the boys into with the lure of easy money.
Unfortunately, the boys aren't the first ones to get their hands on the letter. The henchman that departed in the middle of the night from Canton arrives at Bobby's trailer and finds the letter with the boys' names on it.
"That son of a bitch!" He screams while he dials his bosses' pager number with a 9-1-1 after the phone number. Moments later, the phone rings and explains what is written in the letter.
"Teddy, listen, it was Bobby that screwed us and screwed us big time. Times, places, plates, addresses, you name it, he had it written down and telling his friends that he was sorry for getting family involved in his dirty work. Now it doesn't say where he's heading, but he's a dead man!"
Silence falls over the line, with only heavy breathing coming from the other end of the line for a couple of minutes.
"We'll be there, don't wait inside either, leave the place exactly as you found it. Those boys are going to be paid a visit from us. They might have an idea of where he's headed if they know him well enough. I want his balls cut off and his head mounted on my wall! We're on our way, so lay low and wait for them. The boys are not to be touched until I get there." The order is given, and the line goes dead.
Out at the barn, the watchman lays low, hiding inside with no patience for anyone to arrive at Bobby's place.
Everyone else gathers at the backup location to lay low. While they formulate a getaway plan, the boys are getting ready to call it a day and head out to Bobby's.
After they arrive and see the front door is left wide open, they approach with caution to make sure they're alone.
Justin takes the lead inside, but he cannot process how wrecked the place looks with everything left in a mess.
"Wow, something went down here, it looks like," Justin says before he turns to see Josh reading the letter left on the kitchen table.
"Josh and Justin, listen, I am sorry that I left without saying goodbye, but when I see how much of a toll this life was taking on you both. I decided to turn everyone in and make a run for a fresh start myself. It's tearing me apart to see how much pain I caused you. Justin, and seeing you in agony at church was the final straw that broke the camel's back. It was me that called the police, and once I made sure you were safe from being busted, I came back here and took what I could carry in the Mustang. I'm so sorry, boys, and after you read this, destroy it so that nothing can come back on you. Goodbye now and forever- Bobby Boy." Josh reads aloud, then picks up a lighter, destroying the letter.
Justin looks around with an idea in his head about the abandoned trailer.
"Hey, what if we cleaned this up and we take this place over? I'll be eighteen this summer, and I could use a roommate. I'm sure James would love to have the house back to himself. Plus, out here, no adults to check on us, and you could have Nikki all to yourself." Justin teases from the middle of the living room.
Josh simply shrugs his shoulders when the nagging sensation continues to pull at his gut.
"I guess that could work, but this place needs some work for sure, bub. I mean, it's beyond time for new paint and stuff. Granted, James' place ain't no palace, but wow, we'd blow through our money in no time remodeling this dump." Josh states, looking around the place with a look of concern.
"Even if you don't, I'll take it over. This could get me a jumpstart of life on my own. Heck, bro, you know you have a place here to get away."
Together they toss some stuff out of the way to get around a little easier. Justin stays behind to start cleaning the place while Josh takes off to change before calling Nikki to see if she wants to get dinner or just meet up at the mall for a little bit.
"Hey bub, I'll catch you later. I'm going to head back to the house and change. Need anything, give me a call."
Justin acknowledges with a wave of his hand, still occupied with the cleanup.
Neither of them is aware that they're not alone. No longer hiding inside the barn at the end of the gravel road, the watchman has run off to use a payphone to call his boss.
It's almost dusk when Josh departs from the trailer. He isn't aware that an older model Dodge Charger SUV is passing him hauling ass.
"You're sure that's his car?" The Boss demands waiting for confirmation before pulling up the gravel driveway.
"Yeah, pretty sure, Teddy." The recruiter states, staring down the driveway feeling furious.
Without hesitation, the large SUV guns it, spitting gravel all over the place. A single look gives Justin a nervous feeling when he sees the classic SUV coming to a sliding halt throwing dust into the air.
Justin rushes from inside only to get met with guns aimed at his face.
"Get in the fucking trailer!" He's told at gunpoint.
"If you say anything, I'll blow your brains all over the place." One of them threatens as they guide Justin into the kitchen and, shortly after, tie his hands behind a chair with guns in his face again.
The Boss comes into the room and calmly begins with very little patience for any shenanigans.
"Where's Bobby? That boy owes us, and if he isn't found, then you owe us either your life or the money he stole from us plus interest." The Boss tells Justin after he slaps him, busting his lip with a trail of blood.
"I honest to God don't know; if I did, I would tell you. We were waiting to get picked up when we saw the cops last night, I swear!" Justin replies with his voice shaky and rattled.
He listens as one of the guns pointed at him clicks, prepared to fire. Justin closes his eyes, ready for the worst.
"Nah, he's telling the truth; his eyes don't lie." The Boss says when he motions with his hands to have the guns lowered.
"I believe you, son, but he still owes me a ton of cash, you know. Now can you help me out with that, or will it take putting you six feet in the Earth to make it right?"
Unable to form a sentence, Justin's mouth chatters. He sits there, petrified.
"Hey, hey, calm down, the guns are gone. It's just you and me talking. Now, can you help me or not?" The Boss indicates using a hand to lock Justin's face in place. He stares him down to help him focus.
His mind returns to a thought he's had about work and wanting to cut a deal to get themselves out of this lifestyle.
"I...I...I...I might be able to get you some high-priced new vehicles if you don't kill me." Justin pleads to share an escape plan.
His words don't fall on deaf ears. Teddy looks down and notices the uniform with the dealership patch.
"Ah, you work at a dealership and a very nice one to boot. Let me guess, you give us a couple of rides, and we call it, even right?"
Justin nods his head in a hurry hoping it will be enough to convince them to let him live.
"Yes, yes, sir, I have my manager's code for the keys to the new vehicles and the alarm code."
"Now, why would we want Nissan's and Mitsubishi's?" Teddy asks, trying to gain Justin's trust.
"We have Suburban's, all-new Cadillac Escalades, and more. The keys to them are located inside the Pontiac building in the back safe. The alarm code is 1-2-0-6-1-5 with my manager's code to safe is his birthday 6-6-5-7." He explains with his heart beating harder and faster.
Justin is now covered in sweat, expecting to get killed at a moment's notice. His breathing becomes erratic with his hands shaking.
Teddy gets to his feet to make a phone call. The others remain by Justin's chair, waiting to kill him at any instant when told to do so, but when Teddy returns, he wants to cut a deal.
"Tell you what, kid, I liked you from the first night I watched you. I'll do this since I'm feeling generous. If this pans out and you don't screw with me, we'll let you live if you don't involve the cops because your ass is on the line to being implicated with us. Now, I still have a semi in play that can haul six vehicles. You get us those SUV's, and once we're in the clear, we're gone. Then you can go back home. I can have distractions created, BUT, if you're lying to me, I will kill you myself."
Justin gulps hard, and in-between heavy breaths, explain he isn't out to get killed.
"I'm not lying, sir. I'm not; those are the codes I swear on my life!"
Teddy looks over to what remains of his crew working on a plan.
"Okay, this is what we will do. I will stay here with this little punk. You two start a couple of house fires to draw out the cops and firefighters away from the streets. You three write down the codes and head over with Ricky to load up the truck. After you get the last ones loaded up, clean up and sanitize. I'm sure they have camera's in place. Once you're clear and out of harm's way, I'll meet you at checkpoint one, and then you, sir, our lovely guest, can go home and forget all about us. I'd rather skin Bobby alive than some kid he dragged into this mess anyway. I have grandkids about your age, and I can't bear to kill a kid."
The crew laughs as Justin repeats the codes, and they put everything into place after the sun vanishes. Those hours feel like days to Justin. His heart rate doesn't fall during that time.
A portable hand-held scanner goes with each team to track everyone's progress. Teddy even fires up the one sitting behind Justin that Bobby used to track the cops. They're about to listen to the chaos that's going down.
"Well, kid, if this works, you're off the hook clean and clear. Although if even one member of my team gets caught, you won't be going home." Teddy reminds him when the calls come across the scanner of two residential fires in progress.
"Unit 2145 and 2148 two residential house fires in progress along Charlie's Creek. EMS and police en route to the location. Please advise over." The dispatcher calls out over the radio.
"Phase one complete... Now let's see if my guys can pull it off." Teddy says with his smile cracking across his face.
"You're almost in the clear, kid."
Nearly ninety minutes crawl by before a call comes into the house.
"Boss, we are clear, trucks got loaded onto the semi, and they're heading out now. We're sanitizing this place, and it'll burn for hours!" Teddy's told on the other end of the line.
Minutes after the phone call ends, an emergency call goes out, calling for every available unit nearby and throughout the county.
"Every unit available in the region is needed at Tygan Superior Auto Group. Reports of the dealership on fire are coming in from the motel behind the dealership. I repeat every available unit report to Tygan Superior Auto Group immediately!" The voice reports over the scanner in a panic.
Teddy smiles, leaving Justin tied to the chair. He smiles, looking down at his hostage, satisfied for delivering what was promised to him.
"You did good, kid. You sold your soul to survive. Remember you report us, and you're going down too. I'll make sure you get killed in prison. Enough of my guys are in there to make it possible." Teddy reminds him seconds before he turns him around, planting a stiff front kick into Justin's stomach, sending him to the floor in pain.
"Can't say I'll be seeing you around, but thanks for the retirement," Teddy says, giving Justin one final kick of the ribs before he disappears, as Justin coughs on the kitchen floor.
Before he's fully recovered from the kicks, Justin gets upright to his feet, leaping back into the counter crashing the chair into pieces. Grabbing his keys to his car, and dashes the back door when he sees the trailer is on fire.
Justin hightails it up the hill through the brush from the rear of the trailer to make sure the coast is clear. Without wasting time, he gets into his car and floors it to James' place. When Justin arrives and sees that James' car, a Buick Grand National, parked backward, that's the signal that James is over at Lisa's. Justin gets inside and notices the place is empty. Once he learns he's alone, he falls to his knees with tears falling from his face, just glad to be alive.
"Thank you, God, for letting me get out of there! I thought I was a dead man!" He shouts, holding his ribs with the pain returning the more he overthinks about the deadly situation and recalls the guns that were pointed in his face.
"I need a drink." He convinces himself, fighting the urge as things begin to unravel when he turns on the news and sees the special report.
In the background, he can see the inferno's glow, with the news reporter giving an update on the situation.
"For our viewing audience, as you can see, something has gone wrong down at Tygan Automotive. A huge fire has erupted, prompting an evacuation of the hotel located behind the dealership. Firefighters, EMS, and every available police officer have been called in to do their part. Even the National Guard, along with several other fire departments, are coming in to assist in battling the growing flames."
Out of nowhere, an explosion can be heard as a fireball shoots into the sky from vehicle gas tanks that strengthen the fire.
Justin stands there in shock at the sight of the orange glow of what used to be his job. He puts it all together with the term 'sanitize,' meaning they're burning the place to the ground to cover their tracks.
James, followed by Josh, finally returns to the house to join Justin watching the TV as the reporter remains live on the air.
"Dude! I was over at Lisa's when I heard it over at her house." James explains, wanting to explain where he was when this all went down.
"Yeah, I was down at Cruise Avenue. I pray no one was there when this happened." Josh explains, still in his work uniform.
Together, the three of them gradually take a seat and continue to watch as they fall asleep where they sit as more first responders arrive to gain control over the inferno.
In the morning hours, Justin pulls Josh down into the basement, where he explains what happened.
"Bro, they caught me out at Bobby's by surprise, and I thought I was going to die. This is all my fault! I uh, I gave them the codes to get in and take some rides. If I had known they would torch the place, I wouldn't have given them anything and taken my chances. I'm such a screw-up!" A hungover, Justin says, holding his head with a massive headache.
"Dear God bub, I had no idea. Wow, just wow, I don't know what to say, but you didn't know they would light the place up like that. Let it go, and we'll be fine. You said they were leaving, which means we're good. Stay down here and recover. Other than that, I don't know what to do or say other than happy you're alive, bub."
The day grows long, and they see that the fire still isn't under control. The National Guard brings in helicopters to help dowse the flames. It takes everyone fighting the blaze another fifteen hours before it's finally under control.
The results of what happened are the first steps in a downward spiral that's about to shock their lives.
