Chapter 7 - No Returning Home

The sun pierces through the blinds and brings Josh out of his semi rest. Gingerly he lifts his heavy eyelids to see Gwen channel surfing.

"Hey there, pretty lady, you're finally awake." He greets her as he wiggles in the chair.

"Yup, been up for a little while now. You looked too peaceful to bother. I know all this had to have taken its toll on you. James and Alex were in here a little bit ago, and they left to go pick up breakfast. Kids are fine, and they're trying to relax." She mentions filling Josh in on what's happened during his thousand-yard stare when he was resting in the chair.

They sit there together, chatting as the girls watching from the corner of the door. They hope that things will align to bring their parents back together.

Aaron, on the other hand, still wants to separate from his mother to live with Paul. Even after seeing him hit his twin sister, he feels his loyalty to his step-father. Every time he replays that day in his mind, he becomes more confused about why he wants to remain in Paul's life.

It's a struggle that sends him into a path of confusion.

It's not until the girl's giggle when they see Gwen and Josh nearly kiss. They remain unnoticed until Gwen waves for them to come into her room once they get busted by the door.

"My girls! Oh, Brooky, baby, your head. Are you okay?"

"Yeah, mom, I'm fine; I'm feeling better than I did last night at least," Brooklyn says with her hand over her wound.

"Ah, my poor sweet Emily, your wrist. Is it broken, sweetheart?" Gwen asks, reaching out to gently take it in her hand, kissing the air cast.

"No, ma'am, it's just a fracture, that's all. They set it before they put me in this thing."

Josh gives Gwen a peck on the cheek before talking to Aaron one on one.

"Knock-knock," he mentions entering the room.

"Hey, Pop."

Josh takes a seat across from Aaron, giving him a soft, easy look.

"I know we haven't been on the best of terms, and I take full ownership over that. All I can do is say that I am sorry, son. It may not have always seemed like it, but I love you, kiddo. You're my kid, and hell, all I can do is ask for a chance to make it up to you in time."

Aaron turns his head taking his father's words to heart. The anger that once controlled him now intertwines with guilt and confusion. He wipes away a tear before he responds.

"It's not like I hate you, Pop, but I just, you know, don't know who you are really. I mean, other than my looks, I don't know what all we have in common." Aaron replies with his head held low.

Out of nowhere, a subject comes across Josh's mind that instantly creates an entirely new connection.

"What about cars? I'm a huge car guy, always have been. My first was this badass Probe GT that was turbocharged, and it was a sweet ride. I've been restoring an old muscle car when I get the chance."

In that instant, Aaron's eyes light up with that as a shared interest.

"Then you'd like my car! It's a Mazda RX-7, and it's awesome!"

Josh nods in approval over his son's car. For a while, they sit back discussing cars as Josh learns of his son's dream car.

"You want a Toyota Supra. That's a pretty impressive car, son. Still not as good as my 3000GT but still a nice ride."

All Aaron can do is laugh while giving his father a hard time.

"If I had that ride, all you'd see would be my taillights, old man."

The girls overhear the laughter and all Gwen can do is smile. She realizes that at last, the curse can be broken. The bond between Josh and Aaron begins to build. All she can do is sit there and smile.

After everyone is fed and relaxed, the physician tending to the kids gives them the release papers to send them home hours later.

"Hey Pop, care to take me back to the house? I wanna show you my car and drive back to wait here until mom is released." Aaron says, ripping off his hospital bracelet.

"Yeah, c'mon, kid, let's go see this amazing ride."

Father and son playfully race down to Josh's car and vanish for a while, giving Gwen time to spend with her girls.

James and Alex head out to find a hotel for the night since they're too sore to travel down to Huntington. The night spent in the hard-lumpy hospital chairs leaves them rubbing their lower back and feeling every inch of those plastic chairs.

The girls remain by Gwen's side. They refuse to leave with James and Alex. Something about Alex continues to rub Emily the wrong way, which is why Gwen is more than happy to keep them with her.

Meanwhile, back at what's left of the house, Josh and Aaron discover that there is nothing left to salvage. Gwen, Aaron's, and Brooklyn's cars have all been crushed by a tree.

"My car!" Aaron says with his jaw dropped wide open.

"I'm sorry, son, but hey, we'll find you something better, I promise."

Tears in his eyes, Aaron stands there staring at the devastation from the storms that ravaged his childhood home.

"C'mon, son, your mom's waiting, and I'm sure you and your sisters can use some clothes, having everything ruined," Josh tells his son as he heads back towards his car.

After they return to pick up the girls, Josh takes them out to get a few necessities. At the same time, they're out gathering things that they need before they head to get a hotel room.

While Josh takes the kids out to get clothes and other items, Gwen learns something that will shock one of them from a report from the storms on the news.

By the time they return, Gwen is up and walking in hopes of getting discharged from the hospital. She doesn't want to spend another night away from the kids. When they gather back into her hospital room, she looks over at Aaron to enlighten him of the bad news.

"Before anything else is said, I have something to tell you, Aaron. I was watching the news a little bit ago, and well, they found Paul's car and his body turned over in a ditch along the road. I'm so sorry, son, I know how much he meant to you."

It's a shock to Aaron's heart hearing that the man he's looked up to for so long died in the storm. He stands there pale and silent with Josh putting his arm around his shoulders for comfort and support.

"Wanna go talk about it, son?"

Aaron shakes his head, no, fighting the urge to curl his lip. The agony inside his body swells, but he refuses to show it in his actions. He clears his throat and looks at his dad.

"Can we just go get some food and get a room? I need some time to think and stuff."

"Sure, kiddo, let's go, girls. I'll get all of you a room with a rollaway bed. I'll keep your mom company for a while." Josh offers, waving them over with his free hand.

One by one, the kids hug Gwen, and soon they're off. Gwen sits there feeling bad for Paul's family since she got along with them better than she did with him.

While she's left there alone, the doctor comes in to check on her.

"Ms. Storm, how are we feeling today?"

"Better than I did when I woke up. Headache's eased up, and I can see clearly."

The doctor checks her blood pressure and other vitals.

"You seem to be okay physically, but what about mentally and emotionally? Anything to get off your chest?"

She shakes her head no and sits there, hoping to get good news.

"Well, tell you what, let's give it another couple of hours to make sure nothing else flares up. If you feel alright, you are free to go. Dealing with the concerns of a concussion can be severe, especially if not treated correctly. You and your kids got lucky you had someone pull you from that house. I've seen cases come in that weren't so fortunate." The doctor explains while testing her reactions.

"The guys that saved us have always been like guardian angels in my life." She replies, trying to keep from pulling away with the light bothering her more than she wants to reveal.

The doctor updates her records and exits her room. Alone again, she closed her eyes tightly. Unwilling to admit that she's not in the best shape, Gwen breathes in slow and deep until the pain subsides.

Once the kids are set up with a room located across from Josh, he heads back to spend time with Gwen. He's there about an hour and a half as the doctor goes over Gwen one final time before she's released.

"Just remember to take it easy. Any discomfort or fainting you'll need to get back in here to be reevaluated." The doctor informs, uneasy about releasing her.

"I will, I promise. I have my hero here with me." She says with clothes in her arms, heading for the bathroom to change into what Brooklyn picked out for her.

That statement, though, calling Josh her hero doesn't settle well with him. If there's one thing he's never felt like is a hero for any sacrifice. He says nothing as he waits for Gwen to change into her clothes so that they can get going.

Excited to be free from having to stay in a hospital any longer Gwen clings to Josh to help her stay balanced as they walk out.

"Weird seeing you in a hospital bed for once," Josh mentions.

"I have to say I don't like the roles being reversed. Thank you for saving us. You're still my angel." She admits resting her head on his shoulder while going down the elevator.

"Gwen, I love you, and I'd be lost without you or the kids. All I could think to myself I wasn't prepared to find you all dead. That can't happen to me."

A few feet from the elevator, Gwen stops dead in her tracks. With a tug at Josh's arm, she twists him around, pulling him in for a kiss. Gwen refuses to let it be a short exchange. She wraps her arms around his neck, clinging to him for dear life while she begins to melt in his arms.

Once they pull apart, nothing is said. They share a smile towards each other before Josh helps Gwen slide into the passenger seat.

"What a crazy couple of days," Josh admits pausing to finish his statement. "Alex and I were able to work together back there at the house. Aaron is talking to me more. Everything at your house is gone, and I nearly forgot about my case. Wow, that's all I can say is wow at how much things still feel the same, but when push comes to shove, they're not."

"Crazier things have happened, my love. Here we are starting back over again." She pauses for a moment when it dawns on her what he said. "Wait... You said everything is gone at the house. Does that mean I have nothing left to move to Columbus? What about my car?"

Josh feels bad giving her the bad news, but rather than just tell her, he nods and heads back out that way to let her see the destruction for herself.

They park at the edge of the driveway. Gwen sits there, staring at what's left of her home. The house is unrecognizable; trees are snapped and broken throughout the property. She's astonished that they survived.

"Oh, my God! We were in there?" She calls out from the passenger seat. Her hands cover her mouth.

"Yeah, the house was standing a little more when we arrived. We barely got you out before it fell in on itself. Consider yourself lucky."

Gwen is unable to get out of the car. She looks around to the best of her ability from the front seat of the car. It slams harder than expected, but as she sits there in silence in prayer, thankful, and blessed to be alive.

"I owe you our lives, sweet pea." She tells Josh, lowering her hands into her lap.

"You've been there for me so many times, and this time I was there to save you. I've never been that frightened in my life." Josh admits looking over at her.

"Let's go; there's nothing left here. I'll have to replace my phone and call the insurance company tomorrow. Our home, so many Christmases and happy memories wiped out in no time. The kids' first home just poof, gone!"

Gwen sulks in her seat, deflated.

They arrive and immediately check on the kids. When they see that they're not in the room, Gwen finds a note that they went down to the pool area to unwind.

Powered by remorse, Gwen makes her way down to the pool, where she walks over to a chair near the pool, flopping down to sit and watch the kids have fun in the water.

Emily sits on the edge of the pool to keep her air cast from getting wet.

Josh doesn't join her, but instead, he heads over, kneeling over to splash the kids to get their attention.

"Hey, you three, how does pizza sound for dinner tonight?" He suggests, crouched at the edge of the pool.

"Yeah, sure, daddy!" Emily says with a sinister smile on her face. "Mom knows a perfect place. Toss her your phone and let her order it."

Josh doesn't think twice and takes his phone and wallet from his pockets. He tosses them high into the air to land square in Gwen's lap. His focus being twisted away, he doesn't notice Brooklyn and Aaron have closed to the gap from a moment ago.

Without any warning, the kids grab their father and yank him into the water. Gwen sits there, unsure of how to react at first. It isn't until Josh comes up for air that he playfully chases after the brother-sister duo for dunking him.

That's when Gwen loses her cool and can't contain her laughter. Gwen's doom and gloom vanish when she witnesses how much fun is happening in the pool between the kids and their father. She does her best to ignore the nagging headache as it returns.

Emily can't help but watch, feeling a bit felt out until Josh turns to her and uses his hands clasped together, splashing her torso, doing his best to keep the water away from her cast.

"You three are something else," Josh admits after Brooklyn and Aaron retaliate for Emily.

They soak their father to no end until Gwen calls them to get out and get dried off.

"Alright, you hellions time to get out. Food is ordered, and you need to get showered before it gets here." She calls out, clapping to get their attention.

The fun time is over, and soon Josh is upstairs in the shower. He's unaware that Gwen stands there and waits for him to get out.

"Well, that was fun to see the kids get the better of you for once." She tells him, nearly scaring him to death once the shower curtain is pulled back.

"Yeah" is all Josh can think to say, drying off.

"Tomorrow I want to replace our phones and get some better clothes. I am not going on vacation with nothing to wear." Gwen informs Josh seconds before there's a knock at their door.

Quickly she shuts the entrance to the bathroom. She walks over, where she looks out the peephole to see the delivery man standing there.

She props the door open to take the food and returns to sign the credit card receipt.

"Thank you, Mrs. Bradshaw." The young man says to her as that sends a warm vibe throughout her body, mistakenly called Mrs. Bradshaw.

"I like the sounds of that!" She thinks to herself with a smile.

She doesn't wait for Josh when she takes a couple of pizzas and drinks over to the kids' room. She knocks and hands Brooklyn the food.

"Thanks, mom."

"You're welcome, sweetheart, enjoy!"

When she walks back into her room, she sees Josh on the edge of the bed shirtless. Her body reacts, but she reframes from jumping at the urge. All she does is walk by and gently glides her hand along his cheek.

"I love you," she whispers into his ear.

"I love you too." He replies, taking his hand through her silky blond hair.

The remainder of the night, they spend coupled up talking. In no time, Gwen falls asleep on Josh's chest listening to his heartbeat after he shuts his eyes out from fatigue.

He's unaware that things are being set in motion beyond his control as a trap is about to be set for him once he returns his undivided focus to his mission. A task that never ceased during his absence.
