Burnout

~(Y/n)'s POV~

I was beat. I came back from...'that' and immediately tore off my impromptu costume, tossing it into the darkness of my room. I sat on my bed and took a minute to try and organize my thoughts.

"I...I actually did it..." I stared at my hands as I felt myself begin to tremble. "I killed someone...no...I killed two people...I took their lives." I continued to mutter to myself. "Just like that...they're gone...because of me."

My thoughts swam as I lost focus and smoke slowly rose off my body, it curled and swayed as my mind tore itself at this realization. "They get no more chances...no chance to redeem themselves...no chance to atone...they could've had family and friends who'll be forced to have to attend their funeral...all because of me." I felt a hole chew it's way into my heart. "I need someone to help me with this...but I can't go to anyone with this!" I paused as I ran the thoughts through my head in a desperate attempt to figure out if anyone could help me justify this. "Cass hates me, the Twins would be appalled, maybe May...but she's been homeless and would probably think I'm just like the dirty scumbags who murder without any sense or reason." I started to emit more smoke, it's a good thing I disabled my smoke detector or it would have gone off by now.

"Winter...I gave her a half baked excuse so she might not know, and she works in a hospital so taking lives is out of the question...and Willow...she's cool but I don't think telling her I'm responsible for those deaths would bode well.." I collapsed on my back, exhaustion creeping over me. I was spent...physically, mentally and...emotionally. This is the least amount of exercise I've done compared to when I was a real hero. I start hyperventilating, clutching at my chest desperately, trying my hardest to stop my heart from exploding from the speed it was beating.

"I...I can't fucking wrap my head around this...I fight villains who've murdered more people than I've met in my life. How? How do they live their lives with the weight of the lives they took?"

~??? P.O.V~

I whistled a happy little tune as I tucked my hands in my jacket pockets, winking at a cute girl as I passed by on my way to one of the nicest cafes in Edinburg, a city that is located an hour or so away from Wellview City, Café Cocoa Beans. Unoriginal, I know. I had seen it when I first got here but hadn't had the chance to check it out. I arrived and was seated pretty quickly, at the last empty table no less, lucky me!

I ordered some random, stupidly named drink, and sighed inwardly as I had to use their weird names for sizes. Why can't I just say large, damn it? A coffee order shouldn't be an essay!

After my drink was served I was actually pretty comfortable. I had also gotten some weird pastry with my drink, and was calmly reading my book when one of the waitresses came over.

"Excuse me sir? Would you mind sharing your table with another customer? We're at full capacity and won't push it any further, but it would be appreciated...she's also a regular and a good friend.."

"Oh...Sure! I don't mind if that's the case." I shrugged and continued reading, I hope this regular is a good conversationalist...

"Hello—Oh! Is that 'The Art of Electricity'? That's such a good read! The author is quite good at conveying what he wants us to learn and all the different ways to make it!

I blinked as I looked at the girl who sat with me "Uh...Yeah, it is, and yeah! It's so hard to find knowledgeable books on electricity, it's important for me to know this stuff so I'm glad he makes it somehow enjoyable." I held out my hand and she took it as we shook hands, yet she jumped slightly as static lightly shocked her.

"I'm Cass, sorry for having to trouble you, my family is visiting Edinburg for a funeral, and I just needed time away from the rest of the family." She laughed nervously.

I shook my head and smiled "Nah it's okay. I get the feeling, I don't have siblings but I do have someone who's always following me around shouting. And sorry but I'm not comfortable giving my name out so easily, unless you want to meet more often?" I winked and laughed a bit at my own joke.

"Ah! I'm sorry if I gave you the wrong idea, but...there's actually someone I like. Although, he's a complete idiot. I mean, I've been making it SO obvious. I've always shown concern over his wellbeing, I'm usually the person who wakes him up every morning! Hell, I doubt he'd have even survived this long if it weren't for me!"

I could feel the anger oozing off of her. Then, after a few seconds, it was replaced by sadness.

"But...we got into a fight recently. We haven't spoken in over a week, and it's killing me..." She put her head in her arms on the table. "Not talking to him all this time, it's like there's a void inside of me...One that continuously eats away at me every hour that passes that we haven't spoken..." She sighed. "He always avoids all of my questions whenever I ask him something out of concern. I just...want to understand him. What should I do?"

"Well, the obvious option would be to just text him." I glanced at her, and could clearly see her hesitance. I could see tears start to form in her eyes.

"Wouldn't that just make me look like a psychopath? Freak out on him, ignore all of his texts, then start texting him again out of nowhere." Her voice shook slightly, she was on the verge of crying at this point.

"No no! Come on now!" I tried soothing her. "Men are easy to understand, I promise you. If you text him he might act angry for a little, but he'd be happy you're talking to him again."

"I guess...I could try."

Cass pulled out her phone and hesitated, before typing out her message. I can't help but grin at how she frantically backspacing with a worried look on her face. After she's done, she placed her phone on the table, her eyes flicking back and forth between her phone and anything else around the café.

"Chill out a little, he'll text you back. Maybe not imm-"

Her phone dinged, and like lightning, she grabbed her phone and her eyes darted across the screen before breaking out into a wide smile.

"I gotta go!" She quickly gathers her bag, and turns to me. "Thank you so much! This wouldn't have happened without your advice! He said he needed me right now!"

"But what about your funeral?"

"It already happened! Bye, thanks again!"

I chuckled as I watched her run off. I grab my coffee and drink it for a few more minutes before finishing it, then stand up and stretch.

"Well...this was fun." A wide smile spread across my face. "Let's get to the real fun..."

Electricity crackled from my fingers, and I raised my hands above me, letting out a surge of lightning. It quickly engulfed the entire building, and then everything flashed white.

The smoke slowly cleared, and there were no remains left. No ashes, and no sign of a café ever being here in the first place.

People were screaming and running around the streets.

I grinned, trying and failing to mask a chuckle.

"Haha...HAHAHAHAH." I bent over, arms around, my stomach. "T-They were just alive...a second ago a-and then just like that! They're g-gone! Not a single trace to be f-found." I start controlling my laughter, and wipe my eyes. I looked around one last time. "Café Cocoa Beans, it looks like you just got...roasted." I tensed up, cringing at my own pun. "Yeah...I'll have to tase myself for that one later. Not that it ever hurts..."

I kneel down and melt my name into the pavement with my lightning.

'R-A-I-J-Ū.'

~(Y/n)'s POV~

I paced around the dorm, waiting for Cass to show up. 'Why do I feel so nervous? It's just Cass. She's your best friend, she'll forgive you.' I started to frantically scratch at my head. 'Why is this so hard?!'

A knock at the door snapped me back to my senses. I race to the door, then stop before my hand reaches the doorknob.

'You can do this.'

I grab the doorknob, and suddenly feel a weight against my chest. When I looked down, Cass was grasping onto my chest.

"I'm sorry..." She whispered.

"...What."

"I'm sorry for seeming like a psychopath. I'm sorry for trying to force you to tell me what was bothering you. I'm sorry for being so overprotective. I'm so-"

"Cass!" I interrupted her and wrapped my arms around her. She looked me in the eyes for the first time since she arrived. "You don't need to apologize for being concerned. If anyone should be apologizing, it should be me. I'm sorry for being such an asshole and pushing you away, when all you wanted to do was make sure I was fine. You were just trying to be a good friend."

Her lips started quivering and she wrapped her arms around, squeezing me tight.

"It's okay...you idiot." She placed her head on my shoulder, then started to rub her cheek against mine.

"H-Hey..." I could feel my face warming up. "Stop...we're not kids anymore. It's awkward now..."

"Hmmm...Says who?" She held me tighter, continuing her assault on my cheek. "I just missed my best friend. Isn't it normal to show affection to someone you haven't seen in a while." She hummed in pleasure.

I sighed in defeat.

"You know...the warmth that usually comes off of you is kind of different."

I flinched.

"O-Oh yeah?"

"Yeah...but it's not a bad thing. I won't get hot as easily...which means I can be near you longer..."

I let out a sigh of relief. Then, I start coughing. 'What did she just say?!'

~Time Skip~

"Honestly, you don't need to tell me why you were so upset that day. Some things are too personal, huh?"

I smiled. "Thank you, Cass. That means a lot to me."

"Um...do you mind if I stay the night? I really missed you...so..." Cass trailed off, averting her eyes.

"Yeah, that's fine."

She looked at me, her eyes sparkling.

"Thank you!" I'll be right back!" She stands up off of the couch, and skips into the bedroom, then closes the door.

I stare at the door. '...There's no way Cass can know what I did. She'd probably hate me.'

I shook my head, and turned the TV on, then I switched to the news. Let's see if any villains were active today.

The door to the bedroom creaks open, and Cass's head peaks out.

"Um...close your eyes."

I raised an eyebrow, but did as she said.

I heard light footsteps walking towards me, then suddenly stopped in front of me.

"...Okay, open them."

I open my eyes, and can't help but blush at the sight before me.

Cass was standing in front of me with her long black hair down instead of in her signature pigtails. She was wearing my shirt, which was about three sizes too big for her, and, I'm guessing since the shirt covers the entirety of them. Her face was a dark crimson, and she was fidgeting in place.

I opened my mouth, but no words came out. 'Craaaap. She looks so cute right now...' I thought to myself. 'I don't know why, but her wearing my shirt makes it even better.'

"W-Well?" She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear.

"Um...you look really good..."

A smile spread across her face, and she sat down next to me, grabbing my arm.

"In other news, a popular café in Edinburg suddenly disappeared. Reported around one o'clock in the afternoon, there is no trace left behind of Café Cocoa Beans, and the only clues as to what happened are some eyewitnesses from outside the establishment, and a name most of the world is all too familiar with."

I felt Cass start shaking beside me. I looked down at her, and there was a look of horror in her eyes.

"Cass? Hey, Cass! Cass! What's wrong?!"

The TV suddenly flicked a word burnt into the ground. A name.

Raijū.

Cass started to breathe heavily, clutching at her chest.

"Cass?! What's wrong?!"

She looked at me, eyes wide, tears forming.

"I...I was there...five minutes before that happened..."

My eyes grew wide, and my heart began to race, as the severity of what almost happened had dawned on me.

Cass could've died today.
