Chapter Seventeen
Mikko came back into the kitchen trailed by a reluctant looking Albert.
"I don't know how good of an idea this is," Albert said with a sigh. "If he even flinches too hard, he could traumatize the belly and cause a spontaneous abortion."
I looked into Mikko's eyes. "If you're not going to be able to control yourself, we shouldn't do this."
He nodded. "It'll go fine. I just need a distraction so I'm not tempted to kill Albert." Mikko stood between my legs. "Make this quick Albert."
The doctor scoffed. "I haven't even found the breaks yet. I need to do some feeling around."
Mikko nodded once before Albert's fingers started feeling the bones in his arm for any breaks. Mikko's amber eyes glared at Albert when he found a separation. "Where else do you hurt?"
"Upper arm, near the shoulder," Mikko grumbled barely understandably.
Albert nodded and started feeling there too. "Two breaks aren't that bad for stopping a car."
"Tell that to my ribs."
Albert smiled and held back a chuckle. "Those will heal on their own." Albert grabbed his arm on the lower portion, at the first break. "Alright, let's do this."
Mikko grumbled unhappily but brought his lips down to mine. In the next five seconds, I heard two sharp snaps that I would never forget the sound of.
Albert quickly backed off when Mikko's face separated from mine to growl at Albert with his even brighter amber eyes. He was going to follow Albert since he looked like fleeing prey. So I grabbed his face and brought my face towards him. I would've preferred to just pull him down to me, but he was giving in to his prey drive.
Instead of following Albert, his attention turned completely to me. His hands went to my hips and pulled me crushingly close to his groin. I quickly realized where this was going when I felt the beginning of his erection.
I pulled away from his mouth. "Not here."
The wolf in Mikko's amber eyes scanned the room. "Right." He moved his hands from my hips to under my thighs. "Hold onto me."
I locked my ankles around his waist and wrapped my arms around his neck. My belly didn't get as much in the way as I had expected it to.
Mikko quickly took me upstairs and locked us in there for a couple of hours.
I had been sound asleep, exhausted when a banging at the door startled me awake. I pushed myself into my elbows and looked at the door. "Who is that?"
"Finn," Mikko grumbled as I laid back down. "I've been blocking him for the past hour."
I stretched. "Why?"
"You needed rest." He looked over at me. "My wolf had a bit too much fun with you."
I smiled at the memory. Mikko and his wolf were one and the same, but his wolf didn't hold back or censor himself. The wolf saw no shame in his actions.
"He's going to blow the door down." I stretched, causing my back to crack wonderfully.
Mikko got out of the bed. The deep cuts on his chest looked like they were mostly healed now. The portion of the laceration near his sternum was still an angry red color, but there was obvious improvement. "You should get dressed. Your father wants to see you."
I groaned and covered my head with a pillow. "I'm tired."
His finger poked my side. "If I have to face my father, so do you."
I whipped the blankets off of myself and grabbed my clothes on my way to the bathroom. I still felt exhausted when I got out of the hot shower, but at least I didn't feel so emotionally unstable anymore.
When I came out of the bathroom, the room was empty. I continued out of the room, down to the living room where there were bound to be people waiting for me.
I found Nikki and my dad waiting there, staring at each other. "Hey guys."
Nikki smirked at me. "You look like you're feeling better."
I stuck my tongue out at her as I took the seat next to her. I was feeling better.
"What happened?" Dad asked. "All I was told was that Mikko held off an attack."
"He did," I said with a nod. "Mikko said he was going to interrogate the guy."
Dad looked me over. "Were you hurt at all?"
I shook my head. "No."
"Mikko stopped the car before it could even touch her new one." Nikki added. "I don't know how well anyone else would have done in that situation. Mikko was so fast. He made sure Em was safely in the car before turning to the speeding car. I don't know how he managed to mangle that car with only his body."
"He had several breaks from stopping the car," I muttered beside her.
Nikki's eyes rose in surprise. "And he still man-handled that wolf."
Dad leaned back on the sofa. "If they're sending scouts, you're going to need constant protection."
Nikki bobbed her head in agreement. "He should send protectors for her. At least two."
Dad eyed me. "Or you go with Mikko."
I sighed. "I don't know if that's what I want."
"It's not about you Em," he said in his very fatherly tone. "This is about keeping those kids cooking."
I looked down at my fidgeting hands. "I know. I'm just...scared."
Nikki wrapped an arm around my shoulders. "Everything will be fine Em. Whatever you decide, Mikko will provide you with the best protection available."
"Where is Mikko?" We might as well decide what the plan was going to be now, while we were on good terms.
"He's in the basement with Finn."
I looked at the clock. It was already dinner time. "I'm starving and sleepy."
Nikki smiled. "Let's go make dinner then. It'll give us something to do."
As Nikki started the chicken I took out one of the big steaks. "Feeling like steak?"
I shook my head. "Mikko's still healing. He won't want enchiladas."
"How thoughtful of you." She teased with a smirk.
I grabbed a knife from the knife block. "You'd better be nice. I'm armed." I warned playfully.
She scoffed. "I'm not nearly as afraid of that knife as I am of your influence on Mikko."
"Whatever." I muttered as I cubed the meat into bite size pieces and put it in a bowl.
Nikki and I fixed dinner for the next couple of hours under the watchful eye of my father. I decided I wanted enchiladas. Nikki cooked and shredded the insane amounts of chicken needed while I tried to keep up with her. She worked so fast. We were almost finished when Finn walked in, followed by his son.
Finn smiled. "It smells wonderful in here." Nikki and I just smiled in response. We were definitely over the 'fun' of making enchiladas.
"The finished ones are over there." I motioned to the row of dishes next to the oven.
He nodded and grabbed a plate. I wasn't going to lie to myself and say that the head alpha trying my food didn't make me a bit intimidated. He had probably had the best Mexican food in the world, now he was trying my humble food.
After he took a bite he nodded and made a satisfied sound. "These are really good."
"I'm glad you like them." I caught Mikko's eyes and looked towards the fridge. He caught on and opened up the fridge. His eyes lightened when he spotted the raw meat, ready to be eaten. He grabbed the bowl and popped the first piece like popcorn.
At that moment I realized just how human I didn't react. I should be shocked that he'd be so satisfied from raw steak, but I had anticipated this and cut it up for him.
He took the bowl and leaned against the wall, munching away at the meat. His eyes were lightened enough to show everyone that his wolf was influencing Mikko's decisions.
Nikki and I managed to finish the food a lot quicker with the three men watching us, waiting for us.
By the time we were finished, my stomach was growling. Nikki and I took our plates of food to the dining room, mindful that we were being watched closely.
After eating, I was too exhausted to have a serious talk about the future and what this attack meant for it. Mikko caught on to my fatigue and took me up to his appointed room, where I quickly fell asleep.
-----
I woke up to soft snores and kicking babies. I didn't want to wake up, but I was unable to fall back asleep. When I did manage to fall back asleep, Mikko woke up, ensuring that I wouldn't fall back asleep tonight.
"I figured you'd sleep in today," he said groggily.
I shrugged. "I woke up a long time ago."
He smiled. "I know."
"So what's going to happen today?"
He sat up and rubbed the remaining sleepiness out of his eyes. "You're going to stay here today, where I know they're safe, while I take care of the driver from last night."
I rubbed my hand over my belly. "Is he already dead?"
Mikko looked at me for a second before getting out of bed...naked again. "Yes. He's dead already." Mikko disappeared into the bathroom.
Was that the first man Mikko had killed since knowing about the babies? How did he get used to the idea of taking someone else's life? Did it get easier over time?
I stretched before getting out of bed and wrapping a robe around myself before going down to the kitchen. I was starving and I could smell pancakes.
I didn't see Mikko during breakfast. I didn't see Finn or Philip either. They were disposing of the body.
Nikki didn't show up today. She had a life outside of my problems. She needed this break, especially after what happened yesterday.
I knew she needed it, but I still missed her. No one wanted to talk to me anymore. I could understand that because I was a danger magnet for carrying Mikko's babies. I didn't want Nikki, or anyone else for that matter, to get hurt because of Mikko's enemies.
I spotted the men when they came back into the house. Philip was smiling, Finn looked amused and Mikko, he looked unhappy. He was probably on the receiving end of his brother's teasing again.
I wished Mikko would let me in so I could understand their family dynamic. I just wanted to know where I would fit in…if I fit in.
Finn and Philip left Mikko when he stopped in front of the living room. He kept his eyes on me, making me feel uncomfortable since I could see the amber hue of the wolf behind his normally hazel eyes. "Come on. We need to talk."
"That doesn't sound good," I said as I got off the couch. Carrying twins was really starting to make things much more difficult for me to accomplish.
When I got closer to Mikko I noticed that he was covered in dirt and stains. Even the bottoms of his jeans were soggy. He was barefoot, so I'd imagine that the shoes he had been wearing were caked in dirt.
"Did you guys bury him in the Amazon?" I teased.
He shrugged and started leading me to his room. Apparently he wasn't in the mood for joking. Maybe he had some kind of conscious left if disposing of a body put him in a grumpy mood.
He shut the door behind me and locked it. Feeling tired, I climbed onto the bed and sat right in the middle of it.
"So did that attacker give you any good information?"
He shrugged. "He confirmed some of my suspicions, but other than that, he didn't give me information I could use."
"What did he say?"
He smirked at me. "Don't worry about it. I'm going to take care of it."
I let out a frustrated sigh. "I want to know. This involves me and my unborn children. I think I'm entitled to some information on who is attacking me."
He put his hands on his hips and looked at me.
"Why did that wolf try to smash me between two cars?" I asked nervously. I knew Mikko wasn't happy because he was just getting back from disposing of the body.
"He was a scout." Mikko started taking off his stain covered shirt. "He was here to gather information on you for the wolf he was forced under."
"There's a pack that's not in Finn's control?" I asked in disbelief. Who would stand up to someone like Finn?
He smirked as he undid his jeans. "Of course there is. They can't stake claim to land because they're constantly on the run from my father and they're bitter because of it." The jeans fell off of him and became a puddle on the floor. "Once I lock down his location, he won't be a problem anymore."
"You're going to kill whoever it is," I said rhetorically.
"Yes," he said simply. "He attacked my children and their mother. He's going to pay for that."
"Maybe it was just a message," I said thoughtfully. "Why would a wolf attack me when you're around? Maybe they were gauging your reaction or they're saying that they're not afraid of you."
He shrugged. "He made a mistake when he decided to attack. He's going to pay for that mistake with his life."
"Do you think this person will be planning anything soon?"
Mikko shook his head. "I know he's not. Philip's tracking him, once he gives me the location; I'm going after the guy."
"So you know who it is then?"
He nodded once in confirmation. "I do."
"How bad of a guy is he?"
"He's not someone you'd want to be stuck in a room with."
I was afraid for everything that might happen because of this bad man. "What did you do to make him hate you so much that he'd want to kill your kids?"
Mikko looked down and rubbed his hands together quickly. "You might not want to know."
I sighed and thought about that for a moment. If he didn't think I should know, maybe I shouldn't.
Maybe I should just wait until the babies are here before I get to know all of Mikko's dark secrets. I shook my head at that thought. I needed to know what kind of guy I was having children with.
"I do want to know," I said, confident in my decision. "We're going to be stuck with each other for a very long time; I need to know your secrets to protect my kids."
He leaned back. "Such confessions can wait until you've given birth, probably as far as waiting until you've completed the change."
I shook my head. "There are wolves coming after me now. Waiting is going to make a big difference."
"If it's what you want, I'll fill you in. You're not going to like it. You'll probably use it against me."
I motioned for him to get on with it.
"Alright." He sighed but nodded. "Fine... He hates me because I killed his only son."
"You killed his son?" Mikko nodded once. "Why did you kill his son?" There could be thousands of reasons Mikko decided to end another wolf's life.
"Fifty years ago, when Finn was starting to force his will on other packs, there were a few who were fiercely against the idea. A few even went so far to try to kill my father. Obviously that didn't work. Anyone who tried was killed by my father. There were dozens. This particular wolf had only been an alpha for a few years. Back then, that was an impressive run at alpha. His son decided to go against his father's orders and came up with a plan to make Finn vulnerable."
"So he decided to take it out on you?"
He shook his head. "No. He tried to kill Philip and one of my sisters."
"Isn't Philip a good fighter?"
He gave me a small smile. "He wasn't. He didn't believe that fighting was the way to go." He looked down once before looking at me again. "The son attacked Madeline first. By the time Philip could get him away from her, she was already badly hurt."
"Was that how she was changed?" From talking with Margaret I knew that her sister, Madeline, was a werewolf. I didn't ask to hear the story because I knew that it could've been something that made Margaret uncomfortable to talk about.
"Yes." He nodded. "She almost died. When I got there, Philip was bested and almost about to submit to that guy. He thought he could easily beat me because Philip didn't know how to fight. I didn't take my time to kill him. He lasted all of five seconds before I snapped his neck."
"That's not such a bad reason."
He scoffed. "You really have been around wolves for too long. I told you that I killed him with no remorse and no regret and you say it's not that bad?"
"He almost killed Madeline." I reasoned. "I shot out Jorge's knees because he called me a whore." The comparison made me feel like I was the one out of control and needing to get a grip.
He shook his head with a smile. "I guess it could be worse. You could be a human with no experience with werewolves."
"I guess you knocked up the right stranger at the club then," I said teasingly.
But he didn't think it was funny. He pushed himself up and walked out of the room without saying anything else.
"Okay." I mumbled to myself.
Note to self: don't bring up the conception. I thought to myself.
When I couldn't find Nikki I decided to go to the room dad decided to turn into the nursery. He was excited to have grandchildren. He might not have shown it outright all the time, but with all the work he was putting into the nursery, he had to be excited for it. It was going to be painted and decorated after we found out the genders of the babies. I could've found out already, but I was on the fence of whether or not that was something I wanted.
Dad was almost finished with reframing the window. He was a good builder so he decided that the babies needed a huge window to gaze outside. It was probably more for me since I'd be the one who was in here the most.
I looked out the window to see Mikko talking to three protectors. They were listening intently and nodding their heads.
Mikko was going to leave. It wasn't my fault that the babies were conceived during a one night stand.
This wasn't supposed to happen. The chances of this happening were very low.
I was so confused. Mikko was so hot and so cold. His mood changed in the blink of an eye and it was giving me emotional-whiplash.
I felt a tightening in my lower abdomen. It wasn't uncommon during pregnancy since the uterus was constantly stretching and preparing to pass babies. But it was scary for a first time experience. I rocked side to side and kept my hands on the area that was contracting.
I used a slow breathing technique to keep myself from panicking.
I was a nurse. I knew what was happening. It was my uterus practicing for the main event. Braxton-Hicks contractions are a part of pregnancy. Logically I knew this was supposed to happen. But a small part of my mind was freaking out.
Mikko turned around and looked up at me. His movement caught my eye.
"What's wrong?" I heard his voice in my head again.
I didn't know how to communicate back. I wasn't a psychic. I didn't have mind talking abilities. I was just a normal human!
How was I supposed to tell him it was nothing, just some contractions?
I saw him nod and turn back to the three guys. Was that it? All I had to do was think my answer?
"Go rest." His voice came again. "I'll be back in an hour or two."
I nodded and watched him disappear with his car. One of the three men stayed outside while the other two came into the house.
