Chapter 9: Memories

Charlie

I was left alone in my small cell, no clock, no windows, nothing but a small cot and a bathroom the size of a closet. It had a toilet and sink. Nothing else.

I woke up cold and stiff. I picked myself up off the tile and dragged my sore bruised body to the bed and curled up under the blanket. I lay in a ball staring blankly at the opposite wall. The harsh light never turned off. I had no concept of time. I had no idea how long I lay curled up, shivering. My face was throbbing, I knew my cheek was swollen, I gingerly touched my jaw, knowing it was also bruised.

I could move and breathe, so I knew my ribs weren't broken or cracked - had first hand experience on what that felt like. I pushed myself up and slowly pulled my shirt up to see the damage. They were definitely bruised. Sighing sadly I let my shirt drop and laid back down.

I closed my eyes again and drifted into a restless sleep. My mind was desperately trying to keep me from falling into a black pit, but I wished it wouldn't replay memories in my dreams, it just made my heart hurt.

I wasn't watching where my feet went and I bumped into something and fell backwards. Landing with a yelp of pain as my ribs exploded with fire.

I clamped my eyes shut, the tears sprung up so fast. I lay on my back gasping trying to breath through the pain.

"Shuck it Charlie!"

Gally sounded exasperated. Great. I had walked into him, of course it had to be him. I lay on the ground still, holding my side. I heard some rustling and knew he had crouched down beside me, I could feel his warmth and presence. Out of no where my stomach felt like it just jumped off the tree house. The shuck?

"Watch where your going! Your never going to heal those ribs if you keep walking into people and falling." He scolded.

"Never thought of that. Thanks for the tip." I hissed through gritted teeth.

The fire had subsided into a throb. I lifted my hands from my ribs and placed the heels of my hands over my eyes pushing slightly, and wiped the moisture away, taking a slow inhale. I lowered my hands and opened my eyes. Gally was leaning over me slightly, his intense blue eyes looked...calmer and softer then at supper. My breathing stopped, stuck in my chest. I felt my heart speed up, thumping hard against my ribs, making the ache worse. I lay frozen, staring into his eyes. We must have stayed like that for at lest a minute. The setting sun reflecting off his blond waves, the sun made it look slightly red. They looked freshly washed, making the waves almost curly. I also noticed how tanned he was, bringing out some freckles. I saw him clench his jaw and noticed how strong and defined it was.

The shuck is wrong with me? I felt warm, and I could feel the heat rising in my face.

"I'm...I'm going..to sit up now..." I squeaked.

Without saying anything, he slipped a hand under my back and took some of my weight helping me sit up. I hissed again, holding my side. His eyes flickered from my face to my side and frowned, and he looked...worried? The corners of his mouth pulled down.

He slowly and carefully laid me down in the bed, and tucked me in.

"Good night Pipsqueak."

"Night babe."

I heard a deep rumble of a chuckle. It made my stomach back flip. The bed dipped and the blanket was pulled down. Gally's amused face appeared, hovering over mine.

I blinked a few more times, and then rubbed the sleep out of them. I squinted against the light, looking back at Gally.

"Come on Pipsqueak, time to sit up. Drink some water and take the meds."

"No." I protested, trying to curl back up.

Gally grinned. Slowly leaning back against the wall.

"You're looking pretty rough." He chuckled. His eyes sweeping over me.

"Thank you for that. That's what ever girl wants to hear." I grumbled.

He laughed even more.

"You're the one who kept winning... didn't have to keep drinking, you coulda lost."

"You started it!" Glaring at him.

"I also finished it. If it was up to you, you would still be out there!"

"I had a point to prove!"

"Which was?" he cocked an eyebrow at me, a crooked smirk on his face.

"I can hold my own with you shuck faces."

He hummed, and pushed his hair out of his face. I watched, and again it made my stomach flip, the early morning sun was shinning on his face reflecting off his golden blond hair and his tan. He looked like a greek god. I lay my head on my bent arm, just watching him. He caught me watching and his lip lifted into a smile.

"I like your hair longer."

"Is that so?"

I hummed.

"Those drinks sure make you honest."

My face paled. I felt my already twisting stomach drop. I remember some of it, pretty sure I said something about liking him..and lots of wolf whistling. I remember saying I didn't want to be alone because I saw scared of the dark. He was watching me, his eyes searching my face.

What else did I say?

"Do you remember any of it?" he almost sounded...sad or disappointed.

"Most of it." I squeaked, now feeling embraced.

"Well..what about your heart feeling twitterpated, I think was the word you used." He grinned at.

"The shuck? I said that?" I groaned and threw the blanket over my face. "I'm never drinking again."

Gally laughed. I slammed my arms down beside me, pulling the blanket, and glared at him.

"You're enjoying this aren't you?"

"I thought it was...endearing."

I exhaled loudly, blowing a strand of hair out of my face and rolled my eyes. Making me wince, the eye roll made my head hurt. I closed my eyes. I felt Gally shifting. The bed dipped, and I felt his hand beside me. I peaked an eye open, and my breathing stopped, and my heart skipped a beat. Gally had shifted, so he was leaning over me, his hand propping him up. His other hand gently brushed my messy hair out of my face.

"I like when your honest. Brutal and sharp as it can be. I like it. Drunk or not." He said quietly.

I just nodded slightly. I didn't trust my voice. His smile had slipped and the amused twinkle in his eyes disappeared, replaced by an intensity and seriousness that made my stomach flip, and made me feel hot and tingly. Maybe I was still under the effect of those drinks because I reached a hand slowly and cautiously up to his face. I gently caressed the side of his face, and leaving my hand on his cheek. He slowly turned his head, and with one hand garbed my wrist gently, moving it, so he kissed my palm, with eyes closed. He gently ran his hand up and down my forearm.

Shuck he was so gentle right now.

I hummed quietly. He slowly bent the arm he was using as support, and I cautiously rolled onto my back. My brain finally caught up with me and what was happening.

"I look like a hot hungover mess and probably need to brush me teeth."

He just hummed. He had my one wrist in his hand, so I untangled my other from the blanket and placed is cautiously on his chest. I could feel how hard it was beating. He was as nervous as me.

He leaned down even further. And unfortunately-

My body jerked. No, no, go back to sleep I pleaded. Please just keep me in those memories and never wake up. There was another loud bang, causing my body to jerk, and me to groan. I felt the dream slipping away as my mind came back to my harsh reality. The banging was coming from the door. There was another loud bang and it swung open. A new guy was standing in the doorway. He didn't say anything. He just stood there taking up the door frame.

He was huge. Tattoos all over his arms and hands, up his neck, making their way up onto his face. His hair was long and pulled back into a pony. His face showed scares making it look like he had a twisted sneer, but most of it was hidden by a scruffy beard. His eyes though made me double take. They were a dark grey blue. My heart rate had picked up for a second. But it wasn't Gally's eyes were a steel blue, a lighter blue. This gaurds eyes had the same intensity, he stood watching me, but they weren't greedy and evil like Rex's or Janson.

He stood at the doorway, his hands clapped behind his back.

"Morning." His voice was deep and rough. "It's unfortunately time to get up."

"Five more minutes?" I squeaked, my throat was sore, and dry. I must have been left in my cell for longer than I thought. Lack of water made it hurt, there is only so much from the tap I could take.

The one corner of his lip twitched. I knew there was no way I could have said that with Rex or Janson, but this guy...he was keeping his distance, almost refusing to come into my room. I sighed, knowing if I took too long Janson would find some new form of punishment. I slowly pushed myself up to sit, trying not to whimper. The guard's eyes watched me, sweeping over my face, lingering on each bruise. I gingerly pushed myself to the edge and holding my side got to my feet.

My bare feet hit the cold tile and I winced. My legs felt like jello, and the cold sent sharp pain from my feet up into my already sore legs. I also couldn't stand straight, my bruised side prevented me from standing up right. The guard frowned just slightly.

"You're injured."

I froze and looked up at him, "Oh very observant. Thank your boss." I spat.

I knew I was pushing my luck, this guy looked like he could break me neck with his one hand, but his stupid comment irritated the shuck out of me. Of course I'm injured. I'm a WICKED prisoner. I glared at him, well as best as I could with the bruising of the one cheek.

"You see the bruises on my face, that was his fists. The bruising on my ribs and torso? His feet."

He didn't say anything, he just blinked. His scared face remained the same. He looked at me for a few more seconds, then stepped sideways, allowing me room to leave my cell. He didn't bother to see if I was following, he just took off down the bright white hall. I followed quietly behind, like the whipped dog I was becoming. A few turns later he stopped at a slidding door, he took out his key card and held it up. It beeped green with a small robotic voice "Access granted" the door slid open and he continued forwards. Again not bothering to see if I was following. Rex would have both hands on me, dragging me along, whispering all kinds of nasty things in my ear. This guy was the very opposite of him.

"Did you take Rex's job after the warehouse collapsed on him?" I asked.

The guy just gave a curt nod. He glanced over his shoulder quickly, his eyebrows pulled together just slightly.

"How do you know that?" he asked quietly. He didn't have to be loud to be intimidating, his voice was so deep and raspy it sent a shiver down my spin.

"Janson made me watch. The whole thing. He wanted me to see when they caught Tommy and the others." I replied, tears stung my already dry puffy eyes.

He didn't say anything, his eyes looking forward. He stopped outside a room, and swiped his card and the door swung open. My stomach instantly twisted in fear and panic. This room looked just like the other room Janson tortured me in, except this one was bigger and slightly more menacing. The loan chair sat in the middle of the room, the metal cuffs dangled off the chair. monitors and wires were strung all over the place ready to be inserted and attached. There were the regular set of doctors. Today however there seemed to be a whole panel of extra people.

Janson stood with his back to the door, but slowly turned around. My breathing picked up and I took a step back. My eyes darted around the room, there wasn't one familiar face, no one in here was going to show me any kind of mercy or pity. A hand was laid on my back now allowing me to back up anymore. I looked around for the source. The new Captain just indicated with his head to go inside. I knew my eyes were dilated in fear, I could feel my chest rising and falling too quickly. And my hands were sweaty and itchy. I didn't need the Fear Landscape to induce hallucinations of fear. My waking life was already a nightmare.

I didn't move, so the Captain had to use some force to make me walk into the room. The minute I was inside, he closed the door and stood in front of it, blocking my way. The doctors converged on me, grabbing and yanking me towards the chair.

"Thank you Captain Magnus." Janson's voice cut through my cries of pain and struggle. "Just get her in the chair already!" He turned and snapped.

Between two doctors shoulders I saw the Captain, standing feet planted, hands behind his back, face as stone, his intense blue eyes watching. The doctors got me into the chair, despite my feeble attempts to fight back. My wrists were clamped along with my ankles. Already the metal was irritating the freshly scabbed cuts on my wrist. By the time this session was over my wrists would be a bleeding mess.

They inserted more IV's and tubes, monitors were stuck to my head, chest, arms. Janson stepped up to my side, a twisted smile on his face. He was holding the Fear serum in his hands.

"Hmmm. Wonder what you're going to fear today. Will it be a repeat? Or will it be a new landscape. My colleagues are excited to see this in action, they have heard so much about this little experiment. Lets not disappoint them, shall we, Subject A3?"

I just spat in his face as a response. He backhanded me, making my head fly to the side. He grabbed my hair with his fist, and roughly jammed the needle into my neck.

I knew this was going to be one of the worst Fear trials yet. I already had started whimpering.
