Chapter 8: His Girl

Gally

The three of them stood watching the fire rage. The WICKED helicopters and Berg left a while ago. Zayn was frowning, his arms folded, his eyebrows pulled together.

"What cha thinking Zee?" Sophie asked.

"Something is off. I don't know what, but it feels like the game just changed." He said quietly, "Come on, lets go talk to Sarg."

He spun away from the fire and walked swiftly to the door and down the stairs. Gally glanced at Sophie, unsure what to do. She shrugged and indicated with her head to follow. Gally didn't know what else to do so he followed. They went back down the stares and down a few halls, and came to a closed door. Zayn knocked on the door, immediately there was a gruff "Come in"

Zayn opened the door and the three stepping into a small office room. There were maps of the surrounding areas,  more maps with red circles and places crossed out. There were a few pictures of different WICKED employees posted on the walls.

Gally's attention was pulled away when the guy behind the desk slammed his hands down.

"Dammit." he cried.

"Sarg let me take a few to go poke around. This new kid here, he might be able to help." Zayn pointed to Gally.

Gally raised his eyebrows, his arms folded tight across his chest. The middle aged man raised his own eyebrows and looked at Gally with skepticism.

"How would the Munni kid help?"

"I have a name first off." Gally said, narrowing his eyes at the guy.

He chuckled, and leaned back in his desk chair.

"Munnie, you spending too much time with Sophie."

"Oh I won't take credit, he was always like this." Sophie said, throwing her hands up in defense.

"Fine. But still doesn't explain HOW this kid can help." he looked back at Zayn.

"He was part of the Maze Trials." Zayn stated.

Sarg's head snapped back to Gally, his eyes going wide.

"No shit." A small grin spread on his face, he folded his hands behind his head.

Gally didn't say anything, just stood still, his eyes narrowed, jaw clamped.  He wasn't sure he liked how this conversation was going. He liked Zayn, he trusted him, but why would he use him?

"Let me bring him along." Zayn broke the tension.

The man's eyes flicked back to Zayn. And gave him a nod. Then brought his eyes back to Gally. He was looking him up and down, like he was sizing him up. He finally leaned forwards, placing his elbows on the desk.

"All right kid, my names Sargent Wildler, most call Sarg. I'm second in command of The Resistance. Laurence is the leader. If you really were part of the Maze Trials-"

"IF? IF I was part? You calling me a lier?" Gally hissed, his anger flashed, and he took a step forwards.

Zayn held out an arm, his hand on Gally's chest, holding him in place, he gave him a sharp look and then gave the Sargent another look.

"You'd be a huge asset to this resistance. You don't have any of your past memories?" He continued like he wasn't interrupted.

Gally didn't say anything, keeping his jaw clamped and his eyes narrowed.

"Hmm, I thought so. I've heard rumors of them erasing memories, even Hans mentioned it. Unfortunately we don't a way right now to restore those memories...but now with someone who was directly involved...we might work harder to get our hands on the machine that would restore them!"

Gally's anger broke, he stood shocked.

"You..you could restore my memories?" He stuttered.

"If we got the right tech from a WICKED complex, yes." Sargent Wildler nodded.

He felt like a bucket of ice was just dumped over him. Then dread filled him, and he could feel his heart pick up speed, his hands started to shake. He clenched them into tight fists. He didn't want any more memories. He had been stung three times, and had enough memories to deal with. He didn't want any more. He didn't want any more reasons to wake up panicking in the middle of the night. Gally shook his head.

"No." He shook his head, "absolutely not."

Gally saw him narrow his eyes. Gally stood his ground, he wasn't going to let anyone else mess with his mind. He was free from WICKED, no one else was going anywhere near his mind and memories.

"Look here kid-"

"I said no. You claim not to be WICKED? You claim to be against them? Then keep your hands off my memories, they're jacked up enough." Gally growled.

He could feel the tremors in his hands, all the way up his arms, all the muscles were tense. He wished Charlie was here to help, he wished Charlie was here to hold his hand, make the tremors lesson. His chest felt tight. He needed out of this tiny office. He needed to be outside. Without saying anything he spun around and left the office. He marched straight for the front door. No one said anything, no one paid him any attention. He threw the door open, and was hit hard in the face by the heat. The moon was out, and the stars glittered in the sky. This was the first time he actually saw real stars.

He slowly wandered around to the side if the building, towards a clump of rocks. He sat down heavily, and leaned against the rock, with his knees up. He ran his hands through his hair, placing his elbows on his knees, keep his eyes closed. He took a few deep breaths, he rubbed his chest, trying to ease the ache in his chest. The tremors in his hands slowly eased and he tipped his head back, leaning on the rock and looked up into the sky. The night sky was a deep rich dark navy blue and the stars twinkled.

He heard light footsteps and a short figure came around the corner, if he squinted his eyes he could almost imagine it was Charlie. He had to stop doing this to himself, Charlie was dead, she was gone and she wasn't coming back.

Sophie plunked down beside him.

"Well, that was tense." She nudged his shoulder with her own.

Gally didn't say anything, he just watching his hands fidget with with a rock he grabbed out of the sand.

"Look, Gally...no one is going to make you do anything you don't want to do. We ain't WICKED. But.. it would be-"

"No. Drop it. I'm not having my mind played with again!" He snapped.

Sophie held her hands up. She closed her mouth and leaned back, she was quiet for a while.

"Pretty aren't they?" She suddenly said.

"What?" Gally glanced at her, she was looking up.

"The stars. I used to lay on the roof with my grandpa and watched the stars."

Gally hummed. "I don't remember stars. The Maze was underground, so the stars we had were all fake, lights or a hologram."

"Seriously?" Sophie asked loudly, she jerked her head up.

Gally nodded gloomily.

"Well..." Sophie said, tipping her head watching him, "You now have your whole life to star gaze!"

Gally scoffed. Sophie watched him, her blue eyes sparkled in the moonlight. Not like Charlies did though. She gave him a small smile and tucked some hair behind her ear, and shook her head, leaning back against the rock.

"My grandpa told me one time, that the people we loved, when they die they turn into stars, and every night they come out to watch over us."

Gally listened quietly to her theory. He smiled, it seemed like a wild theory, but it eased the tight hold on his heart. He looked back up at the stars.

"Thank you." He said quietly.

"For what?" Sophie asked, rolling her head towards him.

"The stars, I like your theory. Means I can come say hi to...them." His voice was tight, he felt the burning in his eyes again.

"Look Gally." Sophie sat up straight suddenly, she grabbed his hand and held it tight, "You're still recovering from something tat should have killed you! You just lost the girl you loved, you lost your unborn kid...and some really close friends, you called brothers. It's going to take a while to grieve. Grieve how you need to! You might not ever get over it, but I promise the pain dulls. Obviously you went through some pretty rough shit. It's going to take a while. But trust us, okay? Zayn and I understand loss and pain, not to your extent, we don't have your trauma, but we're here. Okay? I don't know what your triggers are, and I apologies in advance if I say something that sets it off. I don't do it on purpose, I promise I'm not that kind of person."

Gally took a shuddering breath. Blinking back the tears. He nodded his head, looking down at his lap. Sophie squeezed his hand and then let go and leaned back against the rock again. They were quiet for a while again.

"Your Okay Sophie, a chatter box, and sometimes smile way too much, but your okay." Gally finally said.

She snorted, "Why thank you! I pride myself in my ability to talk none stop."

"Clearly." Gally rolled his eyes.

She gave him a sly grin.

"So tell me about this girl. She could drink like a beast, and obviously had a wicked right hook! How did she win Gally the grump's heart?" She asked, leaning back.

Gally chuckled, and smiled.

"She was a feisty, mouthy thing. She came up from the box, surrounded by 40 shanks, and she put them all in their place, punched a Keeper, and some other kid. Mouthed off to Alby, the leader, and me. Shuck her mouth was fantastic!"

"Oh I bet it was!" Sophie giggled wiggling her eyebrows.

Gally groaned, rolling his eyes, but he felt a blush rising on his cheeks. That just made Sophie howl with laughter. Gally huffed, rolling his eyes and waited for her to stop.

"Sorry! sorry! Continue!" She giggled, wiping tears from her eyes.

"We always had a fire every Greenie Day and had fights in the sand pit. After two rounds she walked into the middle. It went dead quiet, she had walked into the ring against Minho, the biggest, strongest, quietest shanks- and if he ever heard me say that he would never let me live it down- but she whopped his ass! Waited him out, she had watched him fight for two rounds, so when he dropped his guard she kicked him and took him down. "

"Huh. She wounds fantastic!"

"Yeah..and then I think...when she punched me, I fell for her."

"Hold up! Rewind. She punched you? Explain right now!" Sophie cried, a grin on her face.

Gally sighed, running a hand through his hair. His smile dropped a little.

"Yeah, I wasn't...the kindest. I called her pipsqueak, we argued about her not being able to do something because she was a girl...she sucker punched me. It was a wicked right hook. And me being all about rules, I locked her in the slammer for the night, it was the rule for any shank- any scrapping and it was a night in the slammer. I didn't stop to think about her...her point of view."

Sophie whistled, "Well, after that though you were nicer, right?"

Gally scoffed. "After that we uh, did not get along. We butted heads, we couldn't have a conversation without us ending in yelling. But shuck she was hot when she got wound up. Her eyes would flash, making them even brighter, her nose would scrunch, her little hands would form fists, and her cheeks would go pink, when she spun away her hair would swish. She was one of the only ones who had the guts to stand up to me, argue back, call me out on my bullshit."

"I said it before, and I'll say it again. I think I'm in love. But it also sounds like...you guys would piss each other off just to have an excuse to be around each other..."

Gally lifted the side of his mouth, into a lopsided smile.

"After one argument, I don't even remember what it was about, we argued, wild hand gestures, we kept getting closer and then we were kissing."

"Well, that's one way to do it."

Gally smiled, remembering how that first kiss happened, and how it made him feel.

"For us..it was shucken fantastic." He whispered.

"Well, After that you guys had smooth sailing?"

Gally shook his head. And then sighed.

Sophie sighed dramatically.

"This sounds like a long story. Let me get comfortable!"  She slid her jacket off and balled it up, she lay down using the jacket as a pillow, crossing her ankles and folding her hands together, laying them on her stomach. "All right. Tell me the tale of Gally and his Lover."

Gally rolled his eyes. But he was grateful that Sophie was encouraging him to talk about Charlie. It felt cathartic, it was healing his broken soul, remembering all the small things about Charlie, maybe it was bringing up some things he should probably work on, now that he had a second chance at life. He couldn't be that angry and controlling all the time. He had to learn to trust people that they know themselves best. Be there to support them and not control them. If only Newt could see him now, self evaluating, and changing!

Gally explained their entire relationship, obviously skipping over their intimate details, though Sophie did try and get some dirty info on how Charlie got pregnant.

"I would think someone would have had the birds and the bees talk with you." Gally rolled his eyes.

"Nope. Please explain exactly how she got pregnant!" Sophie batted her eyelashes.

"Shuck no. Go ask Zayn." Gally huffed.

"Ask me what?" Zayn asked, walking up. He sat down, leaning back on his elbows.

"Gally wont explain how his girl got pregnant!" She pouted.

"Immaculate conception, you  idiot." Zayn rolled his eyes.

"Pfft. You guys are no fun. Girls would have told me ALL the spicy details, I need me some girl friends." She pouted.

"What were you talking about?" Zayn asked, looking back and forth between Gally and Sophie.

"He was talking about his girl. We were discussing their relationship. And I was learning all about these guys called Gladers and what life was like inside this Maze." Sophie sat up excited.

Sophie made Gally explain everything again. Gally just didn't go into too much detail this time, it was a long conversation Zayn missed. He really did appreciate these two new friends. And he vowed to try and do better, he vowed on Charlie and Bean's star in the sky he would live his best life. For them. Because he owed them that much.

"Well, I finished talking to Sarg. First thing we go check out that warehouse. See if we can scrounge any equipment or answers." Zayn finally said, "So we should get some sleep. Gally, I'll show you where your bunk is, since your discharged from the Med Bay."

Sophie got up and brushed herself off Zayn pulled Gally to his feet. He looked back and forth between the two.

"Thank you, both of you. For a second chance at life."
