Chapter 37: WICKED Halls

Sophie jammed her launcher into Teresa's back and made her walk up the stares, following behind Newt. Gally waited for me.

"Everything okay?"

"No. Nothing is okay." I shuddered. "Everything sucks right now."

He just hummed.

We stormed up the stairs to the third level. Sophie shoved Teresa forwards, we needed her key to open the doors. She swiped the card, but nothing happened. We all crowded around the door. Sophie to the left, Gally right in front, I was on the left and Newt crouched down, all our guns raised.

"Again."

Teresa sighed and tried again. The door slid open and immediately we fired. The small room lit up with blue electricity. There were only a few guards and they weren't expecting us, so it was easy to over come them. They all lay convulsing on the ground, blue electricity jumping over them.

"Doesn't feel good does it?" I spat.

I knew they couldn't hear me, but I didn't care. Gally dropped his bag again and set to work on the vault. Sophie and I ran to the control desk, franticly searching the key board.

"Teresa! Get over here! now!" I yelled.

Sophie turned and grabbed her and pulled her over.

"Open the doors! Now!" She pushed a bunch of buttons and the doors clicked open. We rushed over. I felt my pulse quicken. We had the kids, Minho would be here somewhere. We ushed the terrified kids out of the cells into the control room.

"It's okay. You guys are okay now." Sophie called over the noise.

Gally was using a blow torch and some kind of saw to open the thick vault. The guards were still yelling and convulsing on the floor, kids were crying. All the kids looked pale, with big black bags under their eyes. They looked exhausted and were very skittish.

"Newt check that other cell!" I cried, as I ushered a few more kids out. My eyes flicking all over, trying to see if Minho was here. My panic was rising. I hadn't seen him yet. Gally was cursing. Newt spun around towards me, the anger was replaced by fear.

"He's not here!"

"WHAT?" I yelled.

Pushing through the kids, I grabbed Teresa, "Where the hell is he? You said he would be here!" I was so angry and trying to hold the panic inside I shook her, and shoved her towards the control board, the computer and key board.

"Guys, this is going to take some time!" Gally yelled over the noise of the saw he was using.

"Shit." Sophie cursed, watching Teresa franticly type into the computer.

"Where is he?" I demanded again.

"Somebody's him up to the Medical wing." She pointed to the screen. flashing on the screen was:

SUBJECT A7- MOVED; MEDICAL WING- TESTING

There was a small screen with live video feed showing him being dragged to a room. I cursed.

"Charlie, that's on the other side of the building." Teresa cried.

"Take me to him. Right now!" I yelled, shaking her again.

Sophie hefted her gun. "All right, lets go."

Newt shoved his way over, "I'm with you."

The frantic kids had grown quiet, watching the wild exchange. They were smart enough to know something was happening.

"Newt, no, you're not!" I cried, letting go of Teresa and turning towards him. "You have to stay here, wait with Gally for the serum."

"You can't do this on your own!" He snarled. He closed his eyes and grabbed his head, "Minho first, remember?"

"Just go. We're running out of time." Gally called, still trying to cut away the steel door. "I'll get the serum. And meet you out back."

I paused for a second. He glanced over.

"Go Charlie. I love you."

He indicated with his head to the door. I could see the anxiety and fear in his eyes. But he knew I wouldn't sit back and leave Minho.

"I'll see you later."

He nodded. I looked around, I saw a kid who looked to be the oldest. And pointed at him.

"Hey, you!"

The kid jumped.

"Sorry. Didn't mean to scare you. You know how this bad boy works?" I asked holding the launcher up.

He nodded.

"Good. This is yours, you keep these kids safe. Alright? Gally's getting something extremely valuable. The building is gonna blow in a few minutes. Make sure you keep them and it safe. Do you understand?"

"Yes ma'am." He nodded.

"No ma'am. I'm the same age as you. Now you're in charge. When the blue electricity stops, tie them up. It lock them in the cells." I handed him the launcher. Turning towards Sophie and Newt I grabbed another one off the ground, discarded by the convulsing guard. "Let's go get Minho."

"He better be as dreamy as I'm picturing." Sophie muttered.

"Move." I shoved Teresa down the hall. She lead us around the halls, corner after corner. She came to the floor loby and pushed a button for the elevator. Newt, Sophie and myself waited anxiously.

"Come on...come on! Hurry the shuck up!" I muttered.

Finally the elevator door dinged open. Teresa stepped inside and the rest of us followed suit, standing around the elevator.

"Hold it!" Someone called as the doors closed.

A hand was shoved in between the doors preventing it closing. I sucked in a sharp breath and my world started to spin. My lungs stopped working all together. I had to clamp my eyes shut and bite my lip. I bit it so hard to keep from whimpering I tasted blood.

Janson slid into the elevator. Teresa shrunk back just slightly, stumbling into me.

"You're working late, my dear."

His voice was smooth and oily. I shivered. My shallow breathing soundedoud in my helmet. My pulse was loud in my ears.

"See, that's what I like about you, Teresa. No matter how bleak things get, you just... Well, you never give up." He gave her a grin that made me shiver again. I recognized that smile, that evil twisted smile. He had raised a hand and she flinched, triumph flashed in his eyes, but he didn't hit her, instead he gently stroked her cheek.

"Times like this, you need a friend that you can count on." He almost purred.

"Thank...you...I'll...I'll bear that in mind." She said quietly, stepping back slightly.

Her back was stiff now, her shoulders were tense. I was trembling. I almost lost the grin on my gun. I felt a hand on mine, it was squeezing. I glanced down. Teresa was holding my hand. She had it hidden from his view, behind her back. But she had clamped hers over mine.

I'm not sure if it was just the situation and I needed something, anything, or if I understood her situation better seeing how sick Janson was with her but I gripped her hand back. Both of us were abused and used by this sick twisted man.

"There is one thingyou should know." His naisley oily voice cut through my panic.

"One friend to another. Thomas is here. A surveillance picked him up outside the walls...and you would never guess who picked him up."

He raised an eyebrow at her.

"Who?" She squeaked.

"Charlie. Can you believe they are both alive."

"Wow." She whispered, her eyes going huge. She was a good actress.

He hummed, with a sick smile. "Indeed. Ava didn't want you to know. Did you know he gave himself up? Came knocking on our front door! You probably saw the commotion he caused downstairs."

"I..I did. Why would he give himself up?"

"He must finally understand the important work we are doing here. We're finding a cure. A way to help humanity. And maybe he will convince Charlie to come back and finish her testing. They both had wonderful results. Their Killzone patterns were off the charts!"

"Are you going to kill them?" Teresa asked, her big blue eyes widened in shock before lowering them to the ground.

"Would that be a problem?"

Before she could respond the elevator beeped and the doors slid open.

"Well. This me." She quickly said.

As she stepped out she stumbled. With her hand already holding mine it looked like I had just caught her and was holding on.

Smart girl.

The other two guards followed without a word. The elevator door closed and Teresa whirled around.

"Charlie! Listen to me! Please!" She cried, "that serum won't save Newt! It won't!"

"Don't listen to her. I already know this! It's just the base Hans needs. It's the the cure! I've told you this!"

"If I could study your blood! Why are you differnt? You keep claiming you and Tom have different genetic make up! Let me see it for myself!"

"Ha! He'll to the no."

"Open the door!" Sophie interupted.

"If you let me run some tests...I...I promise I'll protect you!"

"Ha! Like you protected Minho?" Newt growled.

"Did you forget YOU strapped me down for half a year every single shucken day for this shucken cure. And not once did you try and protect me! Not once did you guys bother to look at the blood and DNA."

I couldn't breath anymore with the stupid helmet, I pulled it off

"What are you doing?" Sophie hissed at me. But my chest was rising and falling faster then my lungs were working. My head felt hot and I was light headed. And I was angry. So angry.

"How many people is it gonna take? How many more people do they have to round up, torture, kill? Huh? When the hell does it stop?" I yelled at her.

"It stops when we find a cure." She yelled back.

"There is no goddamn cure Teresa! You can't recreate DNA! You can make a vaccine, something to aid in the body's fight, but there is no cure!"

"Don't waste your breath, Teresa. She made her choice long ago."

I froze, my back still faced him and the hall. I felt my blood go cold and my eyes dilated in fear. I felt a surge of adrenaline, my fight or flight response spiked.

"Awww my Dear Charlie. You came back to me." His voice was like poison in my veins.

I involuntarily whimpered. My eyes darted to Newt and then Sophie. Newt's anger cleared for a second replaced by compassion. I didn't know what to do, my fear of him was taking over.

It was like Newt and Sophie could read each others minds. They moved together. Newt lunged forward and grabbed me pulling me towards himself and Sophie grabbed Teresa holding her at gun point now.

"Drop it, kid!" One of the guards yelled.

"Back up!" Sophie yelled, pulling Teresa backwards.

Newt held me tight as my brain caught against my nervous system and my body's natural response to Him.

"Charlie. Did you miss me that much, you willingly walked back into my open arms!"

I flinched.

"Shut up RatMan!" Newt snarled as his arms tightened. I heard the Crank anger in his voice again.

"Aww Subject A5. How's the Flair treating you?"

Newt snarled like a wild animal.

"Tell them to back off." Sophie yelled pushing the gun into Teresa's head, "Tell them to back off!"

"Ahh, you must be Sophie. Yes. Yes, I remember you. I wanted your sister. Your father on the other hand...he thought she would be better off dead."

"Shut up." I whispered.

"What's that Charlie?" He whispered, a twisted sweetness to his voice.

"I said shut up." I said louder, lifting my head off Newt's chest.

"Ahhh Charlie. I missed those pretty eyes. How have you been doing? I missed our time together. All that quality time spent together working for the better of humanity."

"Shut up!" I cried.

Tears streamed down my face, I wasn't sure if they were anger, fear, frustration or something else all together. Janson just smiled. His eyes bore into me, and I went against all my instincts to flinch and shrink back into Newt. I clenched my teeth. Slowly inching towards Sophie and Teresa.

I pulled out my own gun and pointed it at Teresa.

"Hey, Charlie come on. It's me, we're family." He gave me a smirk. "I've known you longer than you can remember. You're not gonna shoot her."

"You don't think so? You and her tortured me! I have all the right to shoot both of you!"

"Okay. Go on then." He sneered. "Shoot her. Prove me wrong."

I hesitated.

"Shoot her."

Teresa slammed her elbow into my stomach and shoved me backwards into Sophie who stumbled into Newt. As she shoved me backwards the gun went off.

I heard a scream and then the doors slammed shut and she slammed a fire extinguisher into the key panel, rendering it useless.

I straightened up, and saw through the clear doors Janson holding a bloody shoulder. Through the panic induced mental fog, I registered I had shot him. And I smirked.

My eyes focused on Teresa she looked terrified but her eyes held mine and with a small nod if her head she indicated down the hall. And then mouthed.

"Minho. Room 405. Go."

I blinked at her, furrowing my eyebrows in confusion.

"Go." She mouthed again and indicated slightly with her head.

"Behind you!" I screamed, slamming my hand into the door.

Janson had stormed up behind her and with a bloody hand grabbed a fist full of hair and pulled her back. She stumbled and he backhanded her, making her crumple to the floor.

The guards has open fired on the doors. But it didn't even make a crack in the doors. They must be bullet proof. Sophie grabbed my arm and pulled me and Newt down the hall.

"Come on! We gotta find Minho! She gave us some time!"

We just turned to face down the hall when a loud explosion made the entire building shake.
