Chapter 1
The young gray kit followed the Thunderpath for days, it seemed, only eating berries and plants. He was skinnier than he was when he first got lost. He did not see himself as a loner, though. He still saw himself as a Clan cat, so he did not hunt prey. He soon saw something way in the distance, but it was hard to make out. His steady walk soon became a trot. He hoped this place was worth it. He was starving. The first day or so he would jump when a monster came by, but he was getting used to it now. It seemed the more he walked, the more monsters came down the Thunderpath. They didn't seem very hostile, but they definitely weren't graceful, with such a strong stench and such a loud roar. He had gone mostly nose blind to the smell, though. The day was cold and the air smelled of rain. Giant gloomy gray clouds seemed to fill the sky to the brim.
As he neared his destination, he smelled... twolegs! Things were already confusing enough without a twoleg smell. What? How far have I gone? He finally saw where he had been heading to. It had tall structures, and a lot of twolegs bustling about. He weaved through the feet of the busy twolegs until through long legs he saw a deserted alley. He weaved through more feet until he made it to the corner of the alley.
He looked behind himself one more time, and then turned his head in the direction of the alley. This was nowhere near the forest. In fact, they are polar opposites. He could not find anything to sleep on, so he curled up on the cold hard ground. He shifted and twisted, but eventually he fell asleep.
That night, he had the strangest dream he had ever had. A silver tabby she-cat Warrior was walking towards him.
"Mom? Mom!" he yowled.
"Graykit, beware of a beast that lurks in the night."
"What?"
"Beware of the beast approaching you, I am trying to help you. Wake up."
"Mom!"
He suddenly jerked his head up, awake as ever. He looked at the corner turning out of the alley and saw a dog stalking towards him. When he saw he was looking at him he charged at the gray kit. He jumped and ran down the alley. The dog wasn't as fast as him, but he did seem to have more stamina. When he reached the end of the alley he turned to see the dog staring him down with insanely hostile eyes.
He snarled a warning at the gray kit. He wished so bad that his Clanmates would come and save him from this beast of a creature. Just then, right before the snarling beast could attack, a cat flew out of nowhere and landed right on top of its head, then jumped onto its back. She dug her claws into its back, making it howl loudly. She raked at its back with its claws. It howled even louder and flung her off. It no longer had the hostile eyes it had before, but scared and fearful eyes. He sensed his fear and to help with it he stood with his back arched sideways and hissed. Before he knew it, the dog was scampering away, whining. With a fearful glance he looked at the snow white she-cat who had just saved his life. She was staggering to her feet.
"Hey, kit." she said with a friendly glint in her sky blue eyes. "Where do you come from? You smell like grass."
For a second, Graykit just looked at her, then replied. "I - I'm from ShadowClan." he mumbled. "And my name is Graykit." he added.
"Hmm... Clan cat, eh? Wandered out of camp?" he nodded his head and looked down at his paws.
"Well, the Clans are way far away from here. Look at you! You must be starved. Lemme show you my little den. You ran past it when you were running away from that dog."
"Well, the Warrior code says I can't eat if the elders and kits aren't fed yet, so I have just been eating leaves and berries." he responded.
"I feel sorry for you, Graykit. But your home would take about another week to get to. I'm so sorry, but I don't think you will be able to go back." she said with sympathy for the gray kit.
"But - but my Clan needs me..." he was silent after that. He would never become a Warrior.
"Hey kit, you can stay with me."
"Okay, I guess."
The two cats started back down the alley.
"So, tell me, why did you leave the camp in the first place?" the white she-cat asked.
"I, I don't know... I was stupid. A group of Warriors were telling me how interesting and awesome it was outside of the camp. Actually, there were a lot of Warriors talking about that." then he grew deep in thought. Did they try to make me leave camp? Was my Clan trying to get rid of me?
"Hmm." that was the only response from the she-cat. She must've been thinking as well.
"Well, c'mon then. Let's get to my den."
