⚜️15⚜️ - Change In Time
Humming in good moods, Eunsook hopped around the kitchen to pack some lunch for school. Her mind kept replaying the other day when the talent show happened.
"I dedicate this song to someone, and... I hope she likes it," Jungkook said back then with his nervous but sincere gaze on her and a small smile before propping his guitar up and singing the song that he was working on. The audience had liked it, giving him a loud applause, and more than that, Eunsook could not stop thinking about it.
"Where have you been taking extra food to lately?" Her mother suddenly appeared behind her, making her jolt and heart jump. "Taehyung?"
Rubbing her hand over her chest, she let out, "Uh... no... not really."
Her mother frowned. "Then who?"
"A friend at university."
"Is it a girl?"
Eunsook pursed her lips, quickly stuffing the food in the lunch box. "No... a boy."
"It's always a boy." Her mother sighed.
"It's not like those before!" Eunsook immediately defended. "And I also do have a girl friend!"
Her mother's eyes shined. "Really? What's her name then?"
Eunsook smiled. "Saejin. She's in the performing arts and she's really sweet, okay?"
"Then pack her some, too."
Eunsook looked back at her mother and wondered if she should. But mothers were always the boss so she was forced to take some for Saejin as well. It really felt like not big of a deal until she was facing Saejin with the box in hand, a little behind her leg, suddenly feeling self-conscious. Maybe it was too much. Maybe they were not close enough like that.
Eunsook felt her face heating up. "I brought some extra lunch with me. Um, would you maybe like some?"
Saejin was more than happy. "Of course!"
Eunsook extended the box from behind herself. "I-I'm not sure if this will be to your liking, but I tried to put some effort so I hope it doesn't suck too bad."
Saejin giggled. "Do you want to have lunch together, then?"
She was about to agree but remembered that she had to give Jungkook's, too.
"Sure, let me just go to a store real quick."
Surprisingly, Saejin said alright, and Eunsook bolted to hand over Jungkook's. He was ecstatic to receive it and asked if she was free, but she was not this time. It was a little punch in the gut for him but what could she do.
Saejin was as ecstatic as Jungkook, if not more, to have lunch with Eunsook. She took a bite from the lunch and squealed in glee. "It's really delicious, Eunsook!"
Eunsook watched her eat in adoration. As a girl, Saejin was very attractive for her. Someone like her would fit Jungkook well, she suddenly thought, but quickly dissipated it when her chest squeezed. Matching people without knowing their thoughts was wrong, too. But the intrusive thought that maybe someone sweeter than herself would suit him better made it harder for her. Eunsook wondered if she should have asked Jungkook to join them.
"What do you like about painting?"
Eunsook snapped back to their conversation. "Huh? Oh. Well, it just... feels good to paint... What do you like about dancing?"
Saejin smiled at her. "Yeah, it just feels good to dance. And I also like wearing pretty dresses for different performances."
The times spent like this were something to look forward to. Even if classes were tough, a small text would ease the day. After classes, Jungkook texted Eunsook if she had an umbrella. She looked outside and saw that it was raining.
Bummed that it would be a soaked way back home, she came downstairs to find Jungkook waiting for her.
"Let's share my umbrella until the bus stop," he said with a grin and her heart skipped a beat.
Before they left, he wrapped his jacket around her after noticing her thin garments, making her more flustered and face down. Her eyes caught his slim waist under the thin shirt and she could not believe that she was checking him out like that. The memories of the other day came flooding in but she fought them like fighting her inner demons.
The walk to the bus stop was filled with laughs and smiles as they huddled together under the small umbrella, arms grazing against each other's and eyes wandering to dispel the tension that was slowly building up in between.
In the distance, a blue haired woman watched them intently and turned to the dark haired man who was watching them even more so. Taehyung held an extra umbrella in hand, its use no longer necessary. His eyes could not leave the two as he wondered and wondered.
Insecurity was not something he felt for a long time. He had it all. He did not need to think about what others had. But something was not his anymore. Little by little, he could feel its absence.
Taehyung asked Eunsook if she wanted to watch a movie when he got a taste of free time, but he did not expect her to already have plans.
"Sorry, I talked to Jungkook about watching a movie that day..." She said and quickly texted Jungkook if he was okay with watching with Taehyung as well.
"Oh... I didn't know you already had plans... Never mind then."
When she got a reply, she asked Taehyung, "You can tag along, too! We would be happy to watch together."
He smiled bitterly. "It's ok, I was just worried you would be sad and alone without me, so I was going to drag you out."
Eunsook huffed at his jab. "Are you saying I'm a loner?"
He pretended to be joking, but deep down, he could feel the change in time. The change that was brought on by his absence in her daily life. 'Watching movies used to be our thing,' he thought to himself.
Little by little, something was not his anymore. Or it was not even his in the first place, but it was still close enough to be considered his.
Maybe that something was someone...
And he was coming near the edge of coveting something that was not his.
But wishing for something that was not supposed to be... that had costs. Unseen and unexpected but inevitable.
Jungkook smiled at Eunsook as she sped past him, making smug faces that she raced in front of him as they cycled past people who were taking strolls along the road. It would have been just a normal day, a nice outing, a time away from all the other life events for the two. They could only see each other.
Yet, their fates intertwining closer and closer was not supposed to happen.
One snap and Eunsook's bike brakes were broken. Speeding down a steep road, neither of the two were aware. Just in time a train was headed her way. Coincidences. To many, it would seem like coincidences overlapping for a misfortune.
As soon as she saw the road lights signaling a train was coming, she tried to stop but only seemed to be speeding up. Seeing her flail around in panic, Jungkook yelled at her to stop while slowing down his own speed with his brakes. Eunsook screamed that she could not and her vision blurred from the fear of hitting the train. What were the chances of surviving? She did not want to die. She was terrified of dying. The people she zoomed past were blurring and blending together in darkness.
All of his muscles tensing up, Jungkook sped up with all his might to reach her and jumped from beside her, pushing her away and rolling on the ground together. The hard cement scraped and scratched their skins, bloodying and tearing their clothes.
Among the shocked crowds, the two recovered their breaths and looked at each other in a daze. Jungkook slowly released his tight hold around her and asked her if she was okay. Her heart was pounding in her ears and she managed to give him a nod. Her hand came up to hold his face and brushed against the blood that was flowing down from his temple. If he did not jump like that, she would have...
Seeing all that unfold, Humility turned to Temperance. He could have berated her as usual and demanded her to do something, but her expression, the desperation within her eyes let him know. It pained her more than him.
